There is a peculiar lake in central Hidalgo County. It tells a story that echoes through time. Pottery shards, shell ornaments, spear lances and other prehistoric artifacts suggest that Paleo-Indians may have camped by the water - more than 1,000 years

For centuries, La Sal del Rey drew the attention of American Indians, Spanish conquistadors, Mexican traders, and purportedly the Aztec Empire. All for one valuable reason - its salt.

The mile-long, 5-mile-wide lake covers 530 acres, is on average 4-feet deep and is estimated to hold at least 4 million tons of salt. The salt was absolutely essential for the natives of that time who would have used it to preserve their meats and animal hides. Stone tools and arrowheads have been found on the lake’s perimeter suggesting that these prehistoric people likely camped on the ground while they obtained the salt they would need for their travels.

Historic Spanish writings by conquistadors note that the Aztec Empire would send out parties to the north to collect the salt and carry it back home. However, it was to be the Spanish who would turn the salt of the lake into an international commodity.

It included the area where Mercado District now resides. Gonzalez rents different properties, and his wife owns Niu Furniture Living. Because he loves to travel, he had seen markets such as these, which inspired him to mimic the concept.

Q - what motivated you to start a business ?

A - I wanted to bring a more unique experience to the RGV, one that people would enjoy doing by themselves such as celebrating a special date or hosting a private party.

Q- What is the history of your business?

A- I spent time in Seattle doing luxury real estate when I came across a bar that was strictly for making hand poured candles. Being a dedicated candle lover myself, I was obsessed with the idea of making candles EXACTLY the way I wanted them to smell with the benefits of using natural, organic products.

Q- What product/special services do you offer?

A- I sell pre-made candles that have unique scents. Customers can walk-in during our working hours to make a signature scented candle while enjoying a beverage. You can have fun and get creative by mixing different scents. I like to refer to my clients as scent-ologists.

Q-What makes your business product/service standout from the rest?

A- Viva Kandle Bar is the RGV’s first bar where you can create a signature scented candle, customized according to your preference. Here you can release the stress of the day, bring your girlies out for a night of fun, host a birthday or bachelor/ bachelorette party, etc. It’s a very therapeutic and relaxing experience that can easily be turned into a grand party for anyone wanting to celebrate any special occasion.

Topgolf features fun and competitive golf games, climate-controlled hitting bays for year-round comfort, a chef-inspired food and drink menu, private spaces for groups of any size, HDTVs to watch the big game and amazing music. There’s no fee to come in and enjoy our restaurant, bar & rooftop terrace. For the game, each player pays a one-time fee of $5 and bay costs starting at $25/hr.

IN OCTOBER OF 1990, THE first colony of Africanized “killer bees” was found just outside Hidalgo, Texas. Though their unwelcome arrival into the United States set the media abuzz with panic, the southern Texas city had an unusually sweet reaction.

The city became known as the “killer bee capital of the world” and the Hidalgo Economic Development Department spent $20,000 to erect a 2,000-pound, lifelike statue of a massive Africanized honey bee. The city even sells posters and postcards that feature the feared bug.
