Kyiv, Ukraine Architects: Yodezeen Studio yodezeen.com virginizakaya.com.ua The task for designers was to keep the existing architecture and all authentic elements of the building with a rich history as much as possible. By creating the project, designers used natural materials as a part of the space design concept. Tabletops are made of natural wood. The lamps are made of copper, while the seating and chairs are made of wood and natural leather. The use of metals and metal mesh performs both the functions of space zoning and creates special decorative elements.

On a solid limestone hillside on the eastern edge of Texas Hill Country, Clayton Korte inserts a private wine cellar. The entrance of the cave is masked by a courtyard lined with towering oak and elm trees, native vegetation and boulders found on-site during excavation. The steel and glass entry leads to a tasting lounge with a salvaged cedar countertop and blackened white oak cabinetry. Douglas fir lining the walls and ceiling create a warm complement to exposed stone and concrete, while also providing shelving for the chilled cellar that houses 4,000 bottles of wine.

HUMMER GARAGE (CONCEPT)

The designer imagines a livable garage in the desert of Southern California and uses the area’s striking landscape and iconic architecture as inspiration. Merging Brutalism and Mid-century Modernism, the structure features a sculpted bronze metal shell that contrasts its rugged landscape with a sleek, angular form. The skylight cuts the volume in two, allowing light to pour into the interior over a palette of travertine, delta wood, and sand-colored plaster influenced by the surrounding nature. Kelly finishes the project with her own Echo bench and Monolith side table, as well as notable pieces from Erik Olovsson, Willy Guhl, and Jan Ekselius. Furnishings live harmoniously alongside the centerpiece of living space, the GMC HUMMER EV.

Electric aircraft might be the future of travel, but most of the ones we’ve seen so far have some significant limits. The Talyn hopes to change that and is being billed as the fastest and greenest way to fly between cities. It flies like a plane, but launches and lands with the help of a large drone. The unmanned drone uses its own battery power to get the Talyn off the ground and returns to help when it’s time to land. This eliminates the tilt-rotor systems found on other eVTOL units making it cheaper to operate and more efficient. The Talyn will be capable of flying 3 times farther than competitors, and can fly five people for up to 300 miles — and will cut commuter times since it will fly between destinations rather than airports.

The clients are a couple of environmental scientists who, along with their two sons, relocated from the Oakland Hills to the summer climate of Orinda. Their commitment to sustainability, including a request for net-zero energy performance annually, was evident throughout the design process.
A three-bedroom program began as a remodel of a 1954 ranch house at the foot of a hill next to a seasonal creek. After finding the existing structure and soils to be unsuitable, the direction settled on reusing the existing footprint under the shade of a Valley Oak that had grown up close to the original house.
The surviving portion of the original house is the fireplace which was wrapped in concrete and utilized for structural support. This made additional grading unnecessary and allowed the new house to maintain the same intimate relation to the old oak.
Construction materials and methods were considered in balance between first and lifecycle costs. The Corten steel rain screen for the exterior skin and interior wood were chosen to take advantage of zero annual maintenance cost and a shotcrete foundation allowed formwork to be repurposed for wood framing.

New York City, USA Architects: Architechtonics archi-tectonics.com Archi-Tectonics converted a long and narrow industrial structure in SoHo into a spacious and flexible 8-story family home. The townhouse is inscribed within the Climate Skin, a spacious lattice envelope made of lightweight steel and folding panels clad with Trespa™ slats. This unique facade also poses interesting solutions for sustainability. By making the Climate Skin operable, residents can adjust ventilation, light, shade, and temperature so that the building naturally adapts to environmental conditions.
The black steel in the original building is used throughout the house, such as in the staircase that runs through all eight stories of the house lit from above by a glass roof.
This Urban townhouse represents an innovative approach to densification in a city challenged by housing shortages and skyrocketing prices. The conversion not only provides residents with a diversity of elegant living, working spaces and generous outdoor areas, but also respects the existing characteristics of the city and poses a potential future for urban living.

Located on the ecotone, or border, between a Ponderosa pine forest and lake, the home is a framework for the family to experience nature. The house emphasizes the crossing point between these two ecological zones – a distinct yet subtle marker of the family’s presence and legacy.
The home’s materiality helps it fold into the landscape. Exterior siding of reclaimed barnwood will silver as it weathers, weaving the home into the forest.The center of the home is the open-plan living and dining area, which has double-height guillotine window walls on either side. From afar, this transparency allows for views through the home to the lake beyond. When both window walls are open, the effect is of a single plinth floating above the forest floor.
Native plantings grow up to the home’s edges, and a screened porch on the south end opens to a covered deck. These varying degrees of enclosure allow the family to engage with nature during all seasons.
