Page 1

BOB MACNEIL  Through traditional and digital mediums, Mr. MacNeil has developed an impressive portfolio  He was surrounded by people who supported his creativity  He honed his imagination from comic books and science fiction movies, and from an early age could frequently be found concocting new artistic expressions.

ď‚™ About a year later in 1978, he saw an advertisement on television calling for artists to join a mail order art instruction course. ď‚™ Unfortunately for the determined budding artist, he failed the test and the school told him that he did not have what it took to be an artist. ď‚™ He was inspired to prove them wrong, he decided that he would become a famous artist and continued to develop his talents.

ď‚™ Mr. MacNeil continued to develop his skills, and in 1990 he started his studies in illustration and design at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art in New Jersey, the United States of America (USA). In 1991, he landed his first official job as an illustrator to produce a series of pen and ink images for a relative who owned a print shop. ď‚™ He taught himself digital art, which would eventually catapult his work to a new level and solidify his position as a highly sought after artist.

Research and Development

  Mr. MacNeil researched these new technologies and taught himself how to use digital art software.  With digital art tools and media, Mr. MacNeil has been able to create more works, easily circulate his art and build up his portfolio at a quicker pace.  The Internet has also become a vital tool for Mr. MacNeil, and after researching the best course of action, he decided to create a website showcasing his work.

 It has given him the opportunity to work in a variety of industries regardless of his location.  The Internet made his location negligible  Internet exposure has brought Mr. MacNeil’s art to people all over the world, dramatically increasing his demographic and target audience  The responses he receives from his website also help him develop his art, and are a great way to share his knowledge.  Mr. MacNeil’s research into digital media and the Internet and his strong foundation in traditional art methods has given him the skills and capability to handle just about any artistic challenge he may face.

 In early 2010, Mr. MacNeil was commissioned by a well known magazine to draw an illustration of a “Patent Troll” for an article.  He contacted the respective infringers and asked that they take the work down or appropriately acquire usage rights.  On one hand, he said that it was flattering for him that his work was seen as being better than some of the other examples of a “Patent Troll” available online.

ď‚™ Education into IP infringement is something that Mr. MacNeil feels is very important, especially in the art industry. ď‚™ One way that Mr. MacNeil ensures he does not fall into this is by staying educated on IP issues and not pigeonholing himself into any particular style, which ensures his work remains diverse and original.

Business Results

ď‚– ď‚™ Traditional training and highly skilled use of digital media and the Internet has helped Mr. MacNeil become a truly multi-talented artist, equally skilled in a variety of fields from advertising and illustrating to animating and video games. ď‚™ All of this success has kept Mr. MacNeil extremely busy, and as of 2010 he works full time in a studio designing and developing land-based slot machines and freelancing in the animation and video games industries

From rejection to inspiration ď‚™ With the traditional training, digital media and the Internet to his full advantage, Mr. MacNeil has become a respected, well-known artist in more industries . Ever vigilant in protecting his work, copyright has been an equally important part of his success, without which his art would be susceptible to infringers hoping to ride the coattails of his success. His experiences with IP infringement only underscored the importance of copyright, and along with his talent and versatility, he has long since proven the art school that rejected him wrong.

ï‚– Keeping Track of Things with MAMORIO

History:

  Started in July 2012,  Tokyo-based startup, Mamorio, Inc., developed a smart tracking tag and app to help people keep track of their belongings, as well as notify them when they’ve left something behind.

MAMORIO

  Innovative tracking tag allows you to find lost objects  It can use the Internet of Things to crowd-source searches  The tag can be used not only to track things, but also to keep an eye on pets, vulnerable people, etc.  The firm uses patents, copyright, trademarks and more to protect their assets

ď‚– ď‚™ The basic concept is that by linking a tag with a smartphone via the Bluetooth function, a user can receive push notifications when the tag is separated a certain distance from the smartphone and loses connection. The alert contains information such as the last-known time and location of separation.

MAMORIO is its simple but sleek design in the shape of a common tag. The shape is easily recognizable by customers.

 The next important decision Mamorio, Inc. took was to upgrade the basic functionality of the tracker. In addition to the smartphone app notification feature, which is triggered when the tag and smartphone are separated by a certain distance, the company also released its patented “cloud tracking” system and the “MAMORIO Spot” system.

Cloud Tracking

  The cloud tracking “search together” function utilizes the Internet of Things (IoT) to offer mutual search alerts through which other MAMORIO users can pick up on the location of a lost tag (provided the cloud tracking function is turned on and that other users enter its tracking range) and automatically relay the information to the cloud.

Spot Tracking

  The MAMORIO Spot utilizes a similar concept, but does not depend on other MAMORIO users to work.

Safety tracking for the elderly

  The main target of users of Me-MAMORIO is the elderly, especially those with memory issues  The development of this product came from the partnership between Mamorio, Inc. and one of Japan’s leading pharmaceutical companies, Eisai Co., Ltd. The two firms wanted to create a tracking tool to support people with memory issues, who nevertheless want to continue to come and go freely while remaining safe.

 Mamorio, Inc. recognized the importance of their unique tracking system and filed a patent for a “lost item discovery system” with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) in 2015, which was granted in 2016.  While the MAMORIO smartphone apps are automatically protected by copyright, with such success, Mamorio, Inc. also strives to protect its other growing intellectual property assets.  Mamorio, Inc. filed its first trademark application with the JPO in 2014 for their flagship brand “MAMORIO”. “MAMORIO” was registered as a standard character mark a few months later in 2015 (Registration No. 5752904),

  The next increasingly popular brand Mamorio, Inc. sought to protect was “Me-MAMORIO”, for which they applied for the registration of another standard character mark with the JPO in 2016. “Me-MAMORIO” was registered the following year in 2017 (Registration No. 5922191), under Nice classes 9, 42 and 45 (personal and social services rendered by others to meet the needs of individuals).  In addition to patents, copyright and trademarks, Mamorio, Inc. also owns the domain name mamorio.jp where users can learn more about Mamorio, Inc., as well as their services, core values and team. Furthermore, the company also maintains an active presence on the popular social network Facebook
