reflections on ong ang, bangkok (TH)
This project began with a site visit to Ong Ang Canal where we noticed that there were a wealth of identities along the canal; traditional, multicultural, market, and residential. But we also noticed that the canal lacked continuity in both accessibility and design. There was no clear aesthetic for the place, nor a continuous pathway through the site. Upon further historical research it was clear that a variety of historical identities and sites existed along the canal as well. The concept of the project is to connect the places of the past with the identities that exist today by ‘reflecting’ on the past to create a stronger and more cohesive identity today. 6

This project focused on the renovation and reidentiy of the Citta Studi area as the Statale campus plans to move to the EXPO site. This proposal consists of opening up the ‘closed’ nature of the current Citta Studi area with more pedestian paths and temporary spaces throughout the campus. Citta Studi will also maintain it’s identity as an education hub by placing a start-up center and dorms in the area previously vacated by Statale. Education as we know it has evolved and no longer follows the strict classroom guidelines - Citta Studi can also expand to fit this evolution to create a more welcoming and modern education area.

The following eight-year business plan shows how the proposed new developments will quickly overcome the costs associated with the proposed changes. By placing means of sustainable revenue (offices and dorms for rent) within the area, the plan will continue to benefit the Citta Studi area past the presented eight years.

crossroads, novate milanese (IT)
The site is in Novate Milanese, in an abandoned green bordering the A4 expressway and the Quarto Oggiaro neighborhood. The proposed plan activated this space by turning it into an extension of the city and connecting the end of the yellow metro line (Comasina) to the neighborhoods just beyond it’s limits. After analyzing the connectivity, green space, and zoning of the area (left) the proposal created centered on a community space that included a library, study areas, a sports facility, and career guidance office (above). Most of the surrounding area is residential, and being on the outskirts of the city, it lacks some vital public services. Crossroads seeks to provide for these public services while also adding affordable housing and park areas for the community. 12

The concept of housing temporality has more than one meaning. It can be related to many people using a specific space or to a specific person using many spaces. This project investigates and analyzes the issue of Floating Professionals from the point of view of the temporary and multi-local living. This lifestyle concerns people who maintain more than one residence in different places, dividing their lives in two. An existence of permanent temporality defines their lives and their interactions with their surroundings. Unfortunately, Floating Professionals often experience an imbalance in these two parts of their lives; one mostly related to family and friends, the other to their work. This imbalance affects both their personal relationships, and their relationship to the city. Our proposal seeks to offer a flexible model for floaters, to expand lifestyle possibilities and provide a sense of belonging in the city.

danish kollegium, copenhagen (DK)
This project involved the construction of an individual apartment for Danish and international students. The objective was to utilize the precious natural light of Nordic summers to enhance the student experience. Challenges of the project included working with a limited amount of space and including living, studying, and sleeping facilities in one space. The unit is north-south facing and the southern side faces out to a communal courtyard and a small private balcony. In order to fully appreciate and utilize the light the entire south wall is made of glass with the top half having a stained-glass feature to balance the light and enhance the artistic elements of the space. The area is exceedingly efficient with a fold out desk for working students and a sleeping loft above the full bathroom. 16

open enrollment and school segregation (USA, IT)
This thesis provided a parallel analysis of open enrollment programs in three western cities - New Orleans (USA), Denver (USA), and Milan (Italy). Each of these cities were chosen because of the diverse manners in which open enrollment was introduced into their public school systems. New Orleans established their open enrollment program in reaction to the disaster the city faced after Hurricane Katrina. Denver has one of the oldest school choice programs in the United States. Milan on the other hand, has been practicing open enrollment since the 2000 when the national government decided to decentralize the school systems. Each of these cases were explored and the results of the open enrollment program are analyzed using the Dissimilarity Index, which measures unevenness of tracts in relationship to the whole. This quantitative data was supplemented with personal interviews from leaders, teachers, and activists who are involved in the local communities. Combining the quantitative analysis with the qualitative input allows for this thesis to conclude with a model of policy management and application that uses the influence of the state government and the investment of the local actors to best present practices for open enrollment implementation. 20

gentrification in garibaldi district, milano (IT)
An analysis of the Garibaldi District was done with the help of the ISTAT data from the Milan area. Data was considered from 2001 and 2011 and the change in residents, homeownership, and building quality were utilized to inform this analysis. Gentrification occurs in stages, so the purpose of the study was to decide which stage of gentrification that area was undergoing. By 2011 the Garibaldi area was fully undergoing gentrification processes as the creative class had come into the city, and rental prices began to rise ad the district became more desirable. An interesting thing to note is that the region has probably evolved into further stages of gentrification. If ISTAT rate were considered in 2019, it is assumed that the rates of homeownershpi would continue to increase, the number of famlies in the area would continue to decrease, and the state of buildings would continue to improve. 22

hearmi, app (GLOBAL) Stop for just a second and listen the sound of your city. Connect with the voices of the people around you, the same ones you hear everyday but never speak to. Leave a small message for an unknown person to change their day for the better…it’s a unique message for them, one that only they can hear. You can also listen to a message someone has left for you. Without reason, without knowing who - just a gift for you on this average day! A private secret between strangers.
