2016-17 SEASON OF Dear Arts Lover; Once again, it’s going to be a great year for shows at the Harris Center! On the Broadway front, we have 6 major tours coming: Once, Rent (special 20th Anniversary production), Fame, Mama Mia! (the “Farewell Tour”), Chicago and a marvelous reimagining of Pippin. It’s one of those rare years when many exceptional Broadway shows hit the road in the same season and find their way to the intimacy of Stage One. There’s no better venue for these —“great shows, up close” indeed! But, as everyone knows, the Harris Center is home to many, many other kinds of performances. Of particular note: Handel’s Messiah, performed by one of the finest interpreters of the piece in the world—New York City’s Choir of Trinity Wall Street with the Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Julian Wachner conducting. Also coming our way this fall is the legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp with her 50th Anniversary retrospective. Ian Anderson will explore his band’s namesake Jethro Tull, and Billy Bob Thornton will be visiting with his band the Boxmasters as well. In the spring, sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar will grace our stage.
Rachel Rosenthal & Dave Pier
We’ll also be welcoming back some old friends: Jeffrey Siegel, Mark Hummel, Clint Black, DRUMLine Live and the Russian National Ballet Theatre each are returning with new programs, each brandishing the same high quality that brought them to the Harris Center previously.
Increasingly, our community partners are presenting touring artists of note, with the legendary Mavis Staples, Michael Feinstein, Melinda Doolittle, Larry Carlton, Iris Dement, Jake Shimabukuro, Marc Cohn and many more destined for Stage One this season. And, of course, regional favorites—Harris Center partners such as the Folsom Lake Symphony, El Dorado Musical Theatre, Placer Pops Chorale, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Theatre, Core Dance and others—offer you the best talent from across the capital region. Folsom Lake College’s own productions in dance, music and theatre continue to shine, providing both great performances and invaluable experiences for students learning the ropes. As the Harris Center matures—we are the youngest performing arts venue in the capital region—we strive to continue to refine our services and offerings to patrons. Beginning this season, in addition to our donor member discount program, we are reintroducing subscription series (see pg 45) to provide increased value for those purchasing multiple shows in a specific area of interest. We turned five years old last year, and your enthusiasm continues to inspire us to offer you the best in music, theater and dance—a vibrant program we can all be proud of. Thanks for all of your support. We look forward to seeing you at many great shows this season. Dave Pier Rachel Rosenthal Executive Director President Harris Center for the Arts Folsom Lake College

FAME– THE MUSICAL
CHICAGO The Musical Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, the National Tour of CHICAGO has everything that makes Broadway great: knockout dancing, a ripped-from-the-headlines story about fame and scandal and one show-stopping song after another. Honored with six Tony Awards, a Grammy, and thousands of standing ovations, the national tour of the longest-running American musical in Broadway history is coming to Folsom for seven performances so you can see it as never before—up close in the intimate Harris Center. Thu, Aug 18, 2016; 8 pm (Art of Wine, 7 pm) Fri, Aug 19, 2016; 2 & 8 pm Sat, Aug 20, 2016; 2 & 8 pm Sun, Aug 21, 2016; 1 & 7 pm $49–$79; Premium $89 10% discount Friday matinee single tickets (These performances replace the originally scheduled March 2016 engagement)
It began as an Academy Awardwinning film, then an Emmy-winning TV series and then on to the stage as riveting musical theatre—all conceived and developed by David De Silva. FAME—THE MUSICAL is the monumentally popular tale of young artists studying dance, music and theatre while attending the New York High School of the Performing Arts. For some, the pressures of a life on stage are too much; for others, the struggles are many and the triumphs are savory sweet. The last American tour was in 2003 and, as an American classic, it has endured remarkably well. After all—as the song sings so exuberantly— “I’m gonna live forever; Baby remember my name!” Fri, Jan 13, 2017; 7 pm (Art of Wine, 6 pm) Sat, Jan 14, 2017; 2 & 7 pm Sun, Jan 15, 2017; 2 pm $45–$75; Premium $79

Mamma Mia! A mother, a daughter, three possible dads and an unforgettable trip down the aisle… Mamma Mia!, the hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, returns to the Harris Center for five performances. It’s one of the most successful musicals ever—the eighth longest running show in Broadway history, and for good reason: on the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the Greek island they last visited 20 years ago. An enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship that plays so very well to the intimacy of the Harris Center. Not to be missed!

Pippin This season’s Broadway magic concludes at the Harris Center with a thrilling update of classic Broadway fare. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this unforgettable production is full of high-flying, death-defying acrobatics, wondrous magical feats and soaring songs from the composer of Wicked. “Anyone who’s seen this production knows how magical the theater can be. This production melds extraordinary circus acrobatics and magical illusions with ‘ordinary’ virtues like accomplished acting, singing, and dancing” (Boston Globe). “The acrobats dazzle in Diane Paulus’s dynamic, high-flying revival… Astonishing. A Pippin for the 21st century. Dazzling and awe-inspiring.” (New York Times). Directed by Diane Paulus, Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater. Her Broadway credits include the Tony winning revivals, Hair and Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.

Rent The 20th Anniversary tour of Rent comes to the capital region—and to the intimacy of Harris Center’s Stage One. Rent opened on Broadway in 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer; it won both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for Best Musical. Rent follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists—a timeless celebration of friendship and creativity. “Indeed, this vigorous tale of a marginal band of artists in Manhattan’s East Village, a contemporary answer to La bohéme, rushes forward on an electric current of emotion … Sustained by a glittering, inventive score, the work finds a transfixing brightness in characters living in the shadow of AIDS.” (From original 1996 review, New York Times). An Evening with the
Mehmet Polat Trio A spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three masters of magical instruments, which the group describes in terms of the elements: the 21-string kora is imagined as the earth element, the pear-shaped oud as space and the flute-like ney as the air…and the idea of Mehmet Polat Trio was born. “The instrumentation of the trio is unique. All the more surprising how coherent the merging of traditions sound” (Jazzthetik, DE). Rooted in the Ottoman, ancient Anatolian, Balkan and West African music traditions, the trio’s original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, presented in a chamber music-like atmosphere. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS The Choir of Trinity Wall Street & Trinity Baroque Orchestra Handel’s Messiah Julian Wachner, Director The Harris Center is very proud to present this world-class performance of Handel’s Messiah, which promises to be a high point for the capital region this holiday season. The very first time Handel’s Messiah was performed in America, it was performed in a tavern in New York. The second and probably more famous performance was at Manhattan’s Trinity Wall Street, a parish down the street from the tavern, in New York City in 1770. The relationship between Trinity Wall Street and Handel’s Messiah has been a special one ever since; if there was but one performance of the Messiah to see, this would be it. “To experience the full, formidable range of Messiah, from the furious flames of the ‘refiner’s fire’ to the delirious party of the finale...let Trinity be your guide....A model of what is musically and emotionally possible” (New York Times).
Whether performing with the New York Philharmonic or with the Rolling Stones on their 50th anniversary tour, the Choir of Trinity Wall Street is one of a kind, “blazing with vigor…a choir from heaven” (The Times, London). With Julian Wachner as principal conductor, Trinity Baroque Orchestra boasts a varied roster of North America’s finest period players. They bring extensive experience gained with the finest orchestras, chamber ensembles and festivals from around the world. And one can’t say enough about Julian Wachner—his charismatic performances inspire uncommon praise. The New York Times pronounced his Trinity Wall Street debut “superbly performed;” of his interpretation of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, according to the Boston Globe, “there was genius here and no mistaking it.” Fri, Dec 9, 2016; 7 pm (Art of Wine, 6 pm) $39-$75; Premium $79
