CONDITIONS OF SALE: Held subject to the rules and regulations of the Livestock Auctioneers Association General Conditions of Sale. Veterinary Inspection: For buyers convenience, a Veterinary Inspection will be carried out on all animals entered for the sale. The Veterinary Officer will examine for general health and genetic defects particularly teeth, eyes, testicles and warts. Any animal found with a genetic fault, disease or disorder will be REJECTED. All cattle entered for the Sale will have their identification marks examined. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale, Vendors are therefore urged in their own interest to examine the tattoo marks/tags of sale cattle before the animal(s) leave the farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures. All Bulls entered for the Sale, must be adequately trained to lead by halter and must be paraded for inspection - unless exempted by the Stewards. Evidence of faults of temperament, vices, etc, may lead to disqualification. METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. INSURANCE: A representative of the Auctioneers Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks. RESERVE PRICES - Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price. All pedigree animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. No animal may be sold privately before being passed through the auction ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS OFFICE.

HOW TO USE ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVs) PEDIGREE HERD 1. What Are EBVs? Many factors influence the appearance and performance of a bull. For example, age, nutrition, management, age of dam, health, season, quality of farm and the genes it has inherited from its parents. The only factor that can be passed on to its calves, however, is its inherited genetic potential. Estimated Breeding Values are measures of that potential and are calculated from the following: � � � � �

Measurements from the animal itself Measurements from the animal’s herd mates (known as ‘contemporaries’) Measurements from the animal’s relatives and their contemporaries The degree to which one trait influences another (known as a ‘correlation’) The degree to which each trait is passed on to the next generation (known as ‘heritability’)

Each EBV calculation involves solving a set of simultaneous equations where the ‘unknowns’ are the genetic value of the animal and the environmental effect on its performance. When carried out many times, using all the information on the animal above, the equations are able to quantify the unknown genetic component. The end result is the EBV and over time, as more pedigree and performance data is added, the solution to the equations becomes more accurate as the true breeding value of the animal is approached.

3. What Are Breeding Indexes? It is often desirable to select animals on the basis of more than one EBV. Breeding Indexes focus on specific breeding goals and combine the appropriate EBVs in to a single figure based on their relative economic value. This is widely regarded as the most efficient method of selecting on a number of traits at once.

When using an Index it is important that your breeding objective is broadly similar to that of the Index in question, otherwise you may unwittingly change aspects of your herd that you did not necessarily want to.

4. How to Use the Information in This Catalogue EBVs are expressed in the same unit as the recorded trait (eg kgs for 400 Day Weight, mm for Muscle Depth etc) are relative to the Breed Average. In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line that is central on the bar chart. Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are. Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are. An example is as follows: The central line representing Breed Average for each trait

EBV values are shown & can be used to refine comparison with the breed using the Benchmark below

Accuracy: Accuracy Values are

expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate EBVs are less likely to change over time.

Adjusted weights are the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;rawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; weights recorded for the animal, adjusted to the nearest 100 days. No adjustment has been made to account for the effects of the environment, feeding etc.

The numeric EBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark below. This is updated annually.

5. Things to Consider… �

To establish just how much influence a bull will pass on to his progeny it is important to remember to halve the value of the EBV, since the other half of a calf’s genes comes from the cow. For example, a bull with a 400-Day Growth EBV of +62 is estimated to have the genetic potential to be 62kg heavier at 400 days of age compared to a bull with an EBV of 0. His calves would be expected to be 31kg heavier at that age when compared to calves by a bull with an EBV of 0, since they only inherit half of their growth genes from their sire (the other half coming from their dam).

Select animals using EBVs that are relevant to your farm, cow type and market

Bear in mind that EBVs predict an animal’s economic performance. They are no judge of factors such as soundness, locomotion, breed type etc and you must be satisfied with your potential purchase in these respects too.

the wilodge herd This is the first selection, of highly productive genetics from the Wilodge Limousin herd, as part of our plan to reduce our breeding female numbers. The selection of cow and calf units that we have on offer, follow on from our successful inaugural offering at last year’s NWM & NW Annual club sale. Our entries, this year, consist of a selection of very promising young outfits, from our most proven lines, all of which, will mature and develop into extremely valuable assets, within their new homes. All of our sale entries are covered by the following high herd health declaration:  In regards to TB. The whole of the Wilodge Herd, including the commercial herd, to date , has never suffered an inconclusive/TB reactor. Last whole herd test 09/12/2013. Annual TB testing parish, therefore all stock are pre movement tested prior to sale.  All adults have been tested, negative for Johnes, since reaching 18 months of age. The whole herd including the commercial herd has been annually Johnes tested since 2002 - 12 years. Last whole herd test date 04/03/2014. Risk level 2.  The whole herd, including the commercial herd, is BVD accredited. The original vaccination programme was introduced, as protection, as the herd was found to be naïve.  All of the adult cattle on offer were tested on 04/03/2014 for IBR, with negative results. The herd is classed as IBR free. We have to date not achieved accreditation, due to 4 animals out of 190 tested, showing signs of IBR marker vaccine. Last whole herd test date 04/03/2014.  All of our adult offering have been annually vaccinated, as protection, against BVD and LEPTO, since maidens. This vaccination programme has been routinely, annually, administered, LEPTO, 20 years and BVD for 14 years. All adult cattle received their booster vaccinations on 04/03/2104.

Please also note that the group AI work carried out for this sale, was a decision based on the fact that many herds prefer New Year/Spring Calvers. It is in no way a reflection of their reproductive abilities. This statement is confirmed within their tight calving records, generated, predominately by, use of AI. Due to our above, high health status, we have been able to secure numerous private sales, which have required rigorous high health standards. We have also been extremely fortunate to secure the sales of both breeding bulls and teaser steers to Cogent Breeding Ltd, an ultimate high health environment, required for worldwide export. Paul and I, have always maintained a zero tolerance, in regards to temperament. We do not even tolerate any female being “calf proud” no matter how she’s bred. On this home rule, we have always been ruthless, and simply/abruptly slaughter ! ! This distain of imperfection, extends to our male population, who are on a slippery slope at Wilodge, to the meat hooks, if not deemed worthy of future effort ! Due to the above, all on farm visitors to Wilodge are always taken aback and amazed by the “chilled out” temperament of all our stock. On a personal level, we are deeply saddened by the painful decision to majorly reduce the size of our breeding herd. This reluctant realisation was predominately due to loss of forage growing land and my personal involvement within external farming business projects for my parents, who I fondly refer to as “ the octogenarian ultimate business team” I, personally, owe all that I have to their years of “hard graft”, so I consider it dutiful and correct, to step up and try to, assist with their workload, out of gratitude. Finally, we want to thank the exceptional “team” of people, staff/contractors/ self- employed helpers/feed and mineral advisors/sale centre teams/people whose brains we pick and many others, who are all valued friends, and who make up the back bone and play an indescribable integral part, behind the screens, towards aiding with the continued success at Wilodge. AUCTIONEER’S TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE (Incorporating the Auctioneer’s Terms and Conditions) 1.

The biddings to be regulated by the Auctioneers and the highest bidder, subject to the Vendor’s reserve (if any), to be the purchaser. No bid shall be retracted and if any dispute should arise between two or more bidders, the Lot in dispute to be put up again and resold, or the Auctioneers may determine the dispute at their own discretion and their decision shall be final. The Auctioneers reserve the right to refuse the bid of any person without being called upon to give reason for such action.

The Purchaser to give his full name and dwelling place and pay for all Lots purchased immediately at the close of sale. No Lot or Lots shall be removed from the sale premises until paid for and a pass-out slip obtained from the Auctioneer’s clerk but each and every Lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the respective purchaser or purchasers thereof and shall be removed from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense.
