Architectural drawings allow us to visualise buildings, the spaces around and spaces within. The plan and section are key to effective design communication and play a critical role in demonstrating spatial activities.

BRIEF Draw, by hand, a large scale detailed plan or section of a public building and describe how the building functions. Consider the following, and be prepared to discuss each subheading in the final presentation.

METHODOLOGY:

Research and document the public building you have been designated. Consider the following as key drawings to explain the function of a building: -

Ground Floor Plan Upper Floor Plan Short Section Long Section Detail through the façade Exploded Axonometric

In groups, decide which drawing you will draw (from the list above) and individually draw it at large scale on paper. Each drawing must be different – you need to talk through the building and discuss how it works – do not repeat the same plan or section. The choice of scale and paper is important as these are key to the communication of the function and aesthetic of the building. Use pen or pencil for line and focus on the importance of the line and technical accuracy. There is no need to render the plan or section or fill in lines. Do not use Photoshop or AutoCAD in the final drawing – this must be a hand drawn original drawing.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

One original large format hand drawing on paper of your chosen building in section or plan in pen or pencil.

Required Scale: Section @ 1:20 or 1:50 Plan @ 1:50 or 1:100 Detail @ 1:5 or 1:10 DEADLINES: INTERIM DRAFT REVIEW Sunday 8th November (1 WEEK) Tuesday 10th November 6.30pm Pin up in studio in groups. Using only your group drawings talk about your work based upon the subheadings referred to in the brief section.

A02100 – Project 2 – Site Analysis

DURATION: TWO WEEKS BACKGROUND Architectural drawings allow us to visualise buildings, the spaces around and spaces within. The plan and section are key to effective design communication and play a critical role in demonstrating spatial activities.

BRIEF

PART ONE – SITE ANALYSIS Before visiting site, undertake a desktop study using information you find remotely. Work in groups but individually assign responsibility for the production of one A2 sheet for each of the following in relation to your site.

Urban structure and historic development Provide an urban overview of the town of Stanley an introduction to your site analysis. Describe how the town has developed and how its parts relate to each other. Show the historic development of the town through maps over time including relevant plans and sites sections. Show your site location on all drawings.

AO2100 BRIEF P2 – Site Analysis

Urban typology Analyse the plan of your site and environs – describe the spatial types (squares, streets, paths, landscapes etc.) and morphologies (patterns of its component parts, density, scales and building types) adjacent to your site. Analyse the section of your site – show the heights of adjacent buildings and draw a sketch section through your site to the seafront.

Accessibility, Legibility and Wayfinding Show how the area around your site is accessed and traversed. Provide plan and sectional diagrams explaining this. Highlight the footfall and diurnal aspects. Critically assess ease of use, safety and choice when moving to and through the site.

History / Activity & Animation Research the use of your site in history. Describe how its function has changed over time. Describe the activities that occur today within your site and its environs, and how they change through the diurnal cycle. Consider how the site changes through the year in relation to seasonal events.

Orientation and Aspect Provide sun path studies of your site and its environs. Describe how shadows form on your site during the day, and consider what this means for the heating and cooling of a building on the site. Analyse the significance of different building orientation on site in relation to views and privacy.

Material & Building Typologies Map and draw the surrounding site typical building typologies, their construction methods and building materials. Consider the materiality of surrounding buildings and draw part elevations and exploded construction details that highlight the type of construction, material and structure used. Research the construction methodology of the surrounding buildings.

METHODOLOGY Record your information with models, maps, diagrams, photographs, sketches, text, drawings and other media such as video and sound recordings. When transferring this information to portfolio sheets, consider how you curate your research and present the work clearly and concisely. Minimise text and text size. Refer to the portfolio layout examples provided.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS Output the information onto A2 portfolio sheets. Decide upon the responsibility of each individual.

As a group, each sheet must contain content agreed with the group and stylised to be read as a single format. You must set up a template (InDesign) for each of the sheets and distribute this to your group.

Agree the following: - Sheet content - Font size / type - Locations of text on the sheet - Size of headlines and location of them - General rulers for content location - The pallet of colours you wish to use

PART TWO – SITE PLAN / SECTION / MODEL Create, by hand, a large scale detailed context plan, section and model of your site to describe its scale and characteristics.

METHODOLOGY: Visit your site and measure it. Take photos, draw sketches, measure and model. Produce the following individual drawings and group model of your site to the same quality of output from drawings completed in brief P1.

In groups, decide upon individual tasks. The choice of scale and paper for drawings is important as these are key to communication of site function and aesthetic. Use pen or pencil for line and focus on the importance of the line and technical accuracy.

For the model, decide upon the size and scope of the model at 1:200 scale. The model will take time to complete, so consider carefully who and how many people are assigned to each task.

Consider purchasing materials as a group. On completion of the work, the drawings and model will be shared as a repository of site information for the use of the group.

A physical site model scale 1:200 in wood and/or concrete and/or metal.

DEADLINE: Tuesday 1st December 7pm Pin up your A2 sheets and large format sections, plans and model in studio in groups. Using your group drawings talk about your site and your initial thoughts in relation to P3 & P4.

A02100 – Project 3 – Reconfiguring_Site

BACKGROUND Stanley, has a well-known scenery for the tourist as well as a favourite weekend getaway for locals in Hong Kong. Its mesmerising view associated with its seasonal events attracts millions of visitors each year. The seaside town consists of; two beaches -namely Stanley main beach and St. Stephen beach-, esplanade, Stanley market and municipal buildings. Historical sites include Stanley Military Cemetery, Old Stanley Police Station, Stanley Fort, Murray House and Blake Pier etc. Other places of interests include Hong Kong Museum of Correctional Services, Pak Tai Temple, Pat Kan Uk and Ma Hang Park.

Today, Stanley benefits from the independent travel policy introduced by the Chinese Government.

Western tourists and expatriates are strongly in favour of the local public house and restaurants by virtue of its relaxing environs. The place offers various types of activities with the seasons. For instance, dragon boats racing in spring, wind surfing and swimming in summer are the events that attract most visitors. While these facilities create job opportunities for some local residents, tourists may cause nuisance such as litter, illegal parking and congested traffic to them as well.

There is a growing tendency for tourism within this tranquil little town. Be it a group of fine diners, or a group of white collar workers who wish to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life.

Should there be more provision to cater for the tourist industry as a result of the Independent Travel AO2100 BRIEF P3 – Reconfiguring Site

Policy initiated by the Chinese Government? Or alternatively, do the local residents necessitate a decent buffer space between them and the tourist?

However, there has been no proper town planning in the past, where we can observe there is no clear distinction between the public domain and private domain. The agglomeration of tourist in the amphitheatre on a Sunday morning is right next to the affordable housing near Murray House for instance.

Certainly there are a number of residential workers -beneficial to the growth of the retail sectorwhich has meant that long distance travel for working in the city is not required. However as in Blackpool, UK the liminal state between the Tourist and the Resident is key to the project. We are to investigate the relationship between the transient and the permanent in architecture. If the town at its inception is structured to provide escape from the everyday life, what is its provision for the permanent resident? And arriving at the appropriate response to this boundary condition is seen here as crucial to the success of the design response.

BRIEF In an area of town adjacent to the seafront, propose a local history museum with community facilities that addresses issues of permanence and community.

METHODOLOGY By re-sampling the existing fabric of Stanley, develop architectural tools for opening up your site and reconfiguring it, involving processes of repair and maintenance. Do this in two parts: Part One – Sampling (one week) Conduct fieldwork through direct observation and sampling, revealing physical and imagined realities by cutting, transplanting and opening up your site. Its construction, destruction and excavation reveal textural details beneath the urban fabric Part Two – Reconfiguration & Framework (one week) After taking apart the rigid structure of your site in part one, reuse and recycle its past components, and speculate on its remodelling. Configure new frameworks grown from the existing infrastructure.

PART ONE – Sampling

METHODOLOGY Look at your site and its environment - behind the face of adjacent buildings and between the gaps of systems that operate in and around your site. Map the site by drawing the physical and non-physical resources found in and around its fabric.

Identify three ‘samples’ of interest around your site, and re-imagine each of them as an exploded axonometric construction drawing or physical model - break them apart to understand how they are assembled.

Select your samples by: A) Deconstructing your 1:50 site sections from project 2, identifying parts of constructional or functional interest that may relate to your ideas for the brief for the museum. e.g Ironmongery Glazed Brick Façade / Assembly / Market stall / Window Stanley Market / Stanley Pier, and / or B) Identifying structures or objects of relevance outside the section that you wish to bring to site and investigate as part of the museum brief i.e. Police Cell / Theatre Stage / Library Shelf / Temple.

Isolate these samples and imagine them as an exploded axonometric drawing or model to explain how they were assembled in the first instance. Describe how the fabric and function is synthesised through geometric form and assembly.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS Three material and constructional samples of selected parts of your site as either A) A scale sample model (made of wood/metal/concrete/plaster) And / or B) An exploded axonometric drawing to scale i.e three drawings or models, or a combination of models / drawings.

PART TWO – Reconfiguration

METHODOLOGY Part One - Framework Analyse the existing patterns on site, and identify or establish grids and frameworks that: A) Existed historically and/or B) Are adjacent to your site e.g. lines of buildings, facades, structure and landscape and/or C) Are generated through the geometries of your samples.

Part Two - Reconfiguration Using your three sample models and/or drawings, begin to experiment with form. Re-discover the site analysis completed in project 2 and introduce your samples to the framework identified above, experimenting with their positioning and repetition that may relate to your ideas for the brief of the museum.

Begin to piece together length, depth, area, height and their inter-relationships appropriate to site.

Draw, model and photograph your experiments. Begin to consider the size of the museum on the site and evaluate your experimentation by starting to compare your proposals with area requirements.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS -

A2 portfolio sheets with sketches, photos and collages of your experiments with site and samples.

A 1:200 wood / metal / concrete / plaster model (that can be easily placed into your site model) which demonstrates your framework and reconfiguration experimentation.

A02100 – Project 4 – Museum

Hungary National Museum – Snohetta Architects

BACKGROUND As a continuation of your research, analysis and experimentation into the reconfiguration of site, design a museum with community facilities. The museum should house a collection relating to your site and relating to the research completed in projects 1-3.

The internal space of the museum should be between 500-750m2 in total over all floors. This does not include void spaces. External space and landscaping is not limited.

METHODOLOGY: Consider the link between community and tourism – What type of divide between the tourist and the resident exists in Stanley at present? If the town in its inception is structured to provide escape from the everyday life, what is its provision for the permanent resident? In an area of town adjacent to the seafront, propose a museum with community facilities that addresses these issues in a creative and intelligent manner.

Re-consider the methodologies explored so far in relation to collage, re-appropriation and re-configuration in the formation of your design approach. Re-examine the precedents researched and analysed in project 1, and learn from the arrangement, circulation and structure of plan and section.

AO2100 BRIEF P4 – Museum

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS Note the list of drawing and model outputs below. This is not exhaustive, and represents the minimum we require from you as essential criteria for completion of the P4 brief. Scales are indicative and must be decided upon by each student on the basis of the drawings produced.

P4 Model Requirements -

A series of conceptual models (wood / metal / concrete / plaster) constructed over the duration of P4, suitably photographed and recorded, illustrating the experimentation and testing of your ideas.

A 1:200 model of your final scheme on your group site model.

P4 Portfolio Sheet Requirements All drawing sheets should be minimum A2 size.

P4 – MUSEUM - ROOM ALLOCATION

AO2100 BRIEF P4 – Museum

NOTE: Room types and areas are a guide to approximate rooms and sizes you may wish to include in your building. You may increase / decrease / omit / include as required. These areas may not suit your site, and are simply as a guide only.

Community Space – 150m2 Dependent upon your research proposition, you should create space(s) that provide for community activity related to your collection and / or feature the process of creating / crafting / repairing your collection. The area may not be one single space – it may be divided into different rooms.

Display Gallery / Galleries – 200m2 Think about the space required for the exhibition of your collection. The area may not be one single space – you may have two or three galleries. Light and views are important in any gallery – can your strategy for light and viewing relate in some way to your research?

Plant- 15m2 The plant room distributes and controls the heating and power supplies to your museum – this should be easily accessible from an access road and is generally located at the ground floor. Think about how you are going to power your building. Is it sustainable? How can it be powered?

Stair & Lift Core 1 – 25m2 Ensure that your gallery is wheelchair accessible on all floors by providing a lift. You must also ensure that in a fire, the gallery allows for suitable and timely fire escape. Consider the size of the objects you are exhibiting. If you needed to remove them from the building, or put in new objects, how would you transport them through the building? Your lift might need to be sized large enough to fit in large objects. Circulation corridors might be widened to accommodate movement of certain objects in the museum. You may alternatively wish to consider movement of your objects through the building façade i.e craning objects through the building into these galleries if they are very large objects. How do you design for an opening façade and crane system?

Stair & Lift Core 2 – 25m2 You may require two lift and stair cores in your building if the fire escape evacuation distances are too far to comply with Building Regulations. Design for two stair cores, and discuss in tutorials whther you think you can reduce the number of circulations cores to one.

Cloakroom – 5m2 Cleaners Cupboard – 5m2 Disabled WC – 5m2 Stores – 30m2 Storage of excess objects is very important in a museum – ensure that you design suitable sizes and locations of stores, which may be adjacent to gallery or workshop spaces.

Female WC – 10m2 Male WC – 10m2 Office – 20m2 Loading / Service Bay – 10m2 A functioning museum requires areas for delivery of large materials for exhibition. Consider what you are exhibiting and how you will move your objects around your building. This may be in close proximity to the lift or stairs. You may not need this is you are moving your objects through the façade of the building.

Reception / Entrance / Shop & Desk – 30m2 The entrance helps orientate the user. You will need to consider creating a wind lobby or revolving doors to ensure that you do not let warm / cold air into the building without control.

How do the local community access the building, and is this separate to the public provision?

Think about security and ticketing. How is your museum secure – does it have just one entrance / exit route that a receptionist can monitor?

How your museum is ticketed, or is it free? If it is free, then who pays for the museum to be built? Could it be the local council / government or a private institution that is using the museum to promote its interests?

Circulation / Corridors –100-125m2 Circulation should not be excessive in the museum – many of the galleries are circulation spaces in themselves.

Consider the route through your building and the way in which rooms are laid out. Refer to plans of your precedent museums and art galleries to analyse how they work and why. Visit a museum and think about the process of entering, ticketing, gallery and finally exit.
