HOUSE This project’s narrative stems from two houses that are physically separated by a party wall, however they are connected through moments of interaction embedded in their design. The two houses are separated by their respective circulation, however, gaps are nestled within the houses that create moments where each homeowner is able to peer into their neighbor’s private space without their knowledge. This voyeuristic interaction is what connects these two houses together. The narrative of voyeurism acts as the driving force behind the project’s program planning; by placing entertainment activities on lower levels, it allows them to act as spectacles for one to observe, while private activities - such as sleeping and bathing - exist on upper levels.

Formulated from a sequence of designs, the Sectioned Wall begins its inception in the Beaux Arts Model. This design model begins with a grid and the addition of columns and walls following suit. This focuses its expression in the sectional or elevation view. In contrast, Rhino is a 3D simulation tool that allows design to startin the oblique view. Revit is a BIM tool that is the amalgamation of the Beaux Arts Model with the view capabilities of Rhino. It allows the development of masses in reference to the workplace with the option of discrete viewpoints. This BIM pedagogical tool shows the progression of 2D information to 3D information. Using this tool, it places constraints on the capabilities of design, rather than drive the design sequence. The design progression is now intended to reshape the wall and its embedded information.

This project started with the close documentation and recording of all existing items within a selected room. From there, a conceptual change is formulated and applied to the room to create a unique experience. The end result that came from the survey of the Resource Room was a play on the feelings of “lightness” and “heaviness” that arise when a person occupies the room. Specific areas and materials that contributed to these feelings were highlighted and chosen to mutate. This new form would exaggerate the room’s aura and change a person’s interaction with the space. The new elements in the room showcase the battle between “heavy” and “light” and how the room is vying to find a homeostasis between the two.

Tasked to craft a study model with the restriction to keep the main model material out of plaster, Crust was created with the use of Plaster of Paris, paper, and steel piano wire. The concept behind Crust is to take advantage of gravity’s effects on viscous fluids and use it in order to create the walls, ceiling, and floor for a space. The resulting facade creates unique geometries and shadows that cannot be replicated again.

ONE

This project’s concept stemmed from formulating a predetermined set of procedures that allow input of randomized numerical variables which lead to an output of unintentional geometry. The project’s aim is to exercise the X, Y, and Z axis to their maximum degree of movement, before placing the geometry into a bounding box that eliminates excess form. Starting with the initial letter H, a series of procedures to stack, rotate, and split was applied in order for the resulting mass to always follow a specific ruleset. As different combinations of variables are applied to the procedures, a certain archetype of results are discovered within the interior and exterior geometry.

TWO

Through the use of a lottery system, project buildings were swapped between groups and resulted in the acquisition of a new structure to adorn. The system developed follows a strict rule of offsets that separate the interior into usable parts. Walkways are developed from these offsets that separate each layer of space, while acting as an omnipotent force that cuts through any mass in its path. Hierarchy is developed in this space with the use of layers between walkways; at its center is the meeting room that serves as the heart of the office and surrounding it are spaces of diminishing importance. Associate desks surround the interior and allow access to congregation spaces by approaching the office’s heart.

The theme of the Design Village 2016 Competition was ‘AURA’ - in which participants were tasked to create structures that cause a shift in the users’ emotions through its geometry and form. The concept behind Tranquility is to create an experience that evokes an aura of relief after a short period of stress. As one travels through the structure, the walls and height of the environment get closer and encloses on the user. This creates a sense of stress that is immediately taken off when they exit the structure and enter the large open space in tis center.
