STEPHEN HAAS To be honest I keep to myself a lot, and I prefer it that way. Although I do enjoy that the city will afford both a reclusive and a social lifestyle. I personally have enjoyed the shows that my pals and I have thrown. I have gotten a true feeling of intimacy from them and because of it we all feel closer than as if we were just passers bye. Unlike some of the bigger ‘cultural hub’ cites, Harrisburg’s culture doesn't stem around a ready-made art scene. Any movement that happens is heavily reliant on active participants of the community. Be it for better or worse, the cultural scene of larger cities is so derivative of their previous generations that many of them have became insular and jaded. Harrisburg doesn't have a rich, successful and thriving history to draw from. So the work you put in it feels appreciated and needed. All of a sudden you get this feeling that there is a fresh slate, that we the young people may be building a foundation, even if the foundation has been set three times over. There aren't really any permanent true music venues in Harrisburg, or at least ones doing the music justice. Aside from a few exceptions. We need one place that will always be there, that will always grow so we can build that aforementioned thriving foundation. As for my art, I want to engage my audience and to create intricate and immersive worlds that will establish a train of thought for the viewer to expound upon. Think back to when you where a kid and how obsessive you were over things you loved. I want to make people experience joy and bliss and to relate my art to their own experiences. My dream is to make a comprehensive piece of artwork that will span across all mediums I have experimented with. It would be something that will not only tell my story but also speak to all people on a universal level. That daydream is my flower garden. I have been working on it for two years now and it's getting better each and every day. I also dream that I will never get bored, that I will constantly learn, laugh, challenge myself, and feel a glowing passion for the things I do. I know that I will not let anything come between my ambitions and me that nothing will deter me from accomplishing my dreams.

may be the state capitol but is in no way, shape, or form the leader in art, culture, or fashion. I feel like it's the frumpy bastard child of Scranton and Pittsburgh. where the ugly girl pulls back her hair, takes off her glasses, and takes out her retainer to reveal she was pretty all along. We as a community must pull our resources and become stronger than the forces that are working against us. It‘s difficult to thrive in a city with a 12% unemployment rate and for an artist, damn near impossible. We must enpower ourselves by participating in events and voicing our opinions in public forums. We must not go down without a fight. We must take the initiative by grabbing our balls and howling at the moon, and if we don‘t have balls we can make some out of Plaster of Paris.

AVA B E RG Ava, known to friends as Ava Hip Soul, was a local activist and poet. She was an outspoken advocate of medical marijuana and was always eager to share her knowledge of its benefits medicinally as well as economically. Ava was a human rights activist. She participated in many political events and had hopes of improving her community. She was a member of NAACP, STLC, and ACLU. Ava was a resident of Harrisburg since 1979 and she touched the lives of many as one of the liveliest personalities in the city. She could be found sharing stories of her life at many of the social gatherings that were held locally. Her spoken word style poetry can be found on YouTube at “Ava Hip Soul”. She was an inspiration to us here at "ONLY HARRISBURG" and we will continue to honor her memory and beliefs for a world of peace and love. TO QUOTE THE SECOND HALF OF AVA’S POEM ‘STENT LAMENT’: “I’VE HAD A GOOD LIFE, NOT TOO MUCH STRIFE GOOD POPPIN MAMMA, NOT TOO MUCH DRAMA I DRINK MY COKE AND SMOKE MY SMOKE song

HELLO! Echoes of Night. friends to the end ⌂
BIOGRAPHY AND CRITIQUE
Jason Herr is a fine art illustrator from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is presently a student at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. He currently has an exhibit at The Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center where you can enjoy and purchase his work. I met Jason Herr on New Ye a r s E v e 2 0 1 2 a t t h e h o m e a mutual friend. It was almost an accident by which I found out that he was an artist. A chance meeting or perhaps, destiny? His work reminds me of a time in my childhood when I believed in fairy-tale characters. Just how I had imagined them, his characters seemed fantastic because they might just actually exist somewhere, perhaps on another planet? Jason told me that he grew up in the wilderness, and there he formed his charact e r a n d w o r l d v i e w. H e i s c u r rently in college and has a number of his illustrations up for sale. I believe that there are great things on the horizon for this artist. He is one of Harrisburg’s very best!

As a nation we have grown increasingly more sensitive and ideal-oriented. While this may not be a bad thing, it has had some unintended consequences, especially to the younger, disenfranchised generation. In this Post-Industrial modern era, we encourage our children to be who they want to be. We teach them from day one that the most important things in life are not the acquiring of wealth or building family security, but to find their personal purpose and pursue it with gusto. We teach them to go to college and get as high a degree as they can muster up the discipline to obtain. “Don’t worry
even set foot into the workplace. Additionally, our education system does not focus on providing them with the skills necessary to run their own businesses, but concentrates solely on training them to become employees. Highly educated employees, but employees nonetheless. Next are the foreigners driven to America by the ample opportunity that our free-market provides, they work the system that we take for granted. Void of idealistic teachings and full of hard-nose experiences of survival, they open up their own businesses and quietly thrive in our midst as we drive ourselves further into
in the machine as opposed to building a machine of their own; but with Americans growing increasingly dissatisfied with this way of life, how much longer will it last? The Baby Boomer generation has made their mark on this nation in a deep and profound way, but for the generations that follow, the days of getting an education, working your way up the corporate ladder, buying a house, starting a family, and retiring with a pension and social security are over. Security is something this nation has very little of, and Americans are realizing that their destiny will now lay in the fruits of a more indepen-
rican and European nations obtain their education in Europe where it is affordable or even free, and than come to America to work in our unashamedly Capitalist society. They don’t come here with the “work your way up the ladder” mindset that Americans have been indoctrinated with, but with one of sheer entrepreneurship. Even those that don’t have high degrees of education make this work by simply keeping an eye on the bottom line, staying focused and most of all, working together. These values are very similar to the values that our founders and their immediate descendants had, and also
about the cost”, their counselors say, “Financial aid will cover it, and when the time comes to pay it back, you will have earned a fine living and can do so just fine.” While the intentions may have been good, what we have created is a nation of young adults with tens of thousands (even over a hundred thousand) d o l l a r s in debt before t h e y have
debt, clamoring over material things. It is a simple difference of values, but ironically, those are values many foreigners have used better in our sys-
dent type of labor. Frustration, anger and depression will set in when the young adults of today’s America realize that the way in which they’ve been
what “The American Dream” stems from. Through industrialization and rampant bureaucracy, we seem to have lost our way, and the effects are manifesting. I’m not saying that either way is the right, or wrong way to go about life, just stating that in time, I believe a synthesis of the two will be inevitable. As we move more towards a global society, we will learn from one another and hopefully take away the positive points of our differences. We are currently at an unprecedented crossroads in human history. As exciting as it is, it also comes with the fear and uncertainty that typically accompanies a time of great upheaval. America is a great nation, and regardless of the criticism we may receive for our bloody roots, oversights and imperfections, I believe the IDEA of what America should be, might very well become it’s own self-fulfilling prophecy.

WHY THE AMERICAN DREAM ELUDES MANY AMERICANS tem than we have in our own. We are a nation in which money rules supreme, and is run (somewhat clandestinely) as much by big corporations as it is by government. So much, in fact, that it’s slowly becoming synonymous in terms of connotation. It makes sense that such a world would train it’s people to serve a sovereign by becoming the cogs
molded to see the world has grown obsolete before they’ve ever had a chance to try it out for themselves. They’ve never had an opportunity to pave their own way because they are hindered by a mass of debt and loss of jobs due to outsourcing, or because the older generation of people are holding on to positions that they now need for survival. dollars for a bike lock and serial numbers are recorded in case the bikes are ever stolen. When we arrived at the bike warehouse we were astonished by the amount of donated bikes. There were bicycles piled against every wall 8 feet deep, hanging from the ceiling, and a special room dedicated to bike parts. The people in the warehouse ranged from infants to elderly and from every background. As we looked around it was easy to see who was in charge. Eventually some bikes are so bad that they are stripped for parts and the scrap metal recycled to enhance the environment. The parts are stored i n a s o r t o f M o b i l e R e p a i r F a c i l i t y ; i t ’s a l a w n c a r e t r a i l e r e n c l o s e d with 8’ plywood which looks like a hillbilly outhouse on wheels. We h e a r d t h a t t h e y a r e n o t a f a n o f b u y i n g t r i c k b i k e s f o r k i d s a n d their explanation was: A professional stunt rider on a closed circuit course should use the BMX trick bike with a spin able fork and pegs. Reasons Why: 1. Professional stunts are done on closed - highly safety inspected courses - not city streets or glass strewn lots. (Evil Knievel inspected every ramp personally before he jumped and look at what he broke!) 2. The first design flaw - The front brake in order to spin the fork must have a longer cable to go thru center of fork. The longer the cable - the poorer the braking performance. Plus, it's pinched at the bottom of the head tube by the brake mounting bolt that means more drag. Then it makes a "U" turn to activate the brake from the bottom - more drag. Then the "U" lets water run into the cable and never out and gunk's it up - extreme more drag!
49
ONLY HARRISBURG ART MAGAZINE RECYCLE BICYCLE
3. The second design flaw - The rear brake in order to spin the fork must be split and then connect to a floating activating ring which pulls on another activating ring and then is attached to another split cable w h i c h t h e n c a n o p e r a t e t h e b r a k e s . Wa y t o o c o m p l i c a t e d - b e c a u s e a s soon as the cables stretch ( and they will ) - they disconnect from the activating rings and AAH - NO BRAKES! 4. Pegs - they are used for stunts. It's cool. Apply front brake, do endo, wheelie, step on peg, kick rear frame with other leg, hop scotch around front wheel. Real Cool (and I sincerely mean that) BUT you’ll get a flat tire and you cannot change it because all the weight on that cantilevered peg on that axle has bent the axle and now the nut will not come o ff . ( i m a g i n e s c r e w i n g p e g s o n a C o r v e t t e ' s l u g n u t s - s m a c k t h e m w i t h a sledge hammer - get a flat - and them tell all your friends that you have the best car on road that you cannot drive ) 5. In reality most pegs are used to haul other kids. Kid #1 sitting on handle bar & feet on front pegs, kid #2 driving the bike, kid #3 standing on rear pegs with hands pulling on shoulders of kid driving the bike. The b i k e i s o v e r l o a d e d a n d w i l l h a n d l e r e a l f u n n y. P l u s c a n y o u i m a g i n e a p o l i c e o ff i c e r q u i z z i n g y o u a s t o w h y y o u d r i v e your car with someone your size sitting in front of you and someone behind you pulling on your shoulders. H e r e ’s t h e s c e n a r i o ; k i d # 1 y e l l s b u m p , k i d # 2 s a y s w h e r e , k i d # 2 l o s e s control, kid#1 hits ground, kid#2 pounds kid#1 into the pavement, kid#3 is launched over the other kids. For the rest of the story; parents of kids #1 & #3 have no insurance and they want kid #2 cited for not hauling passengers legally on his bike, (state law says everyone must have a seat) then they can sue for medical bills caused by kid #2. Te s t Ti m e - t a k e a n a d u l t b i k e - p u t a n a d u l t o n t h e h a n d l e b a r a n d a n other adult on the rear pulling and pushing your shoulder and then go p l a y i n t r a ff i c w i t h y o u r b r a k e s d i s c o n n e c t e d o r s t i c k i n g - g o r i d e a n d then tell me it's SAFE! Oh yeah - all that weight will eventually give you a pinch flat and the pegs will not let you change it. Have fun walking home if you survive. Argument #1 - The price was RIGHT - explain to me again how death or injury or inconvenience is the right price. “Go buy a plain Jane no frills easy maintenance bike with coaster or single cable hand brakes.” tez.

Taoism is not a salvific practice. There is nothing that one needs to be saved from and belief in Salvation would lead to belief in Damnation in the same manner as belief in Good leads to belief in Evil. Although they do not accept the false duality of Salvation vs Damnation, living simply in harmony with Te and Tao and not excessively pursing material wealth, stature or prestige will lead to a joyful life. There could be more roads for only pedestrians and cyclists. All of that could use some improvement. The modern city was designed and customized for the car and everything is very mechanized. WE RECENTLY HAD THE PLEASURE OF SPEAKING WITH LOCAL ARTIST, DJ, AND EQUESTRIAN MEISA CHASE. SHE IS A PENNSYLVANIA NATIVE WHO GRADUATED FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO AND CURRENTLY HAS AN ART EXHIBIT AT LITTLE AMPS COFFEE SHOP ON GREEN STREET. MEISA'S ARTWORK IS EYE CATCHING AND SOMETIMES HUMOROUS WHICH MATCHES HER LIGHTHEARTED PERSONALITY. MEISA, WE KNOW THAT YOU GRADUATED FROM ONE OF THE COOLEST SCHOOLS IN AMERICA. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. I DIDN’T WANT TO STUDY, BUT MY PARENTS WANTED TO GIVE ME AN EDUCATION SO BADLY THAT I ACTUALLY DIDN’T HAVE AN OPTION . I WANTED TO STUDY IN CHICAGO BECAUSE IT IS A CREATIVE CITY . AT THE ART INSTITUTE IN CHICAGO I MET PRETTY SOME PRETTY INTERESTING PEOPLE WHO WORKED WITH ME ON EVERYTHING FROM FASHION SHOWS TO DJING . WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT MAKING MUSIC AND MAKING ART? MUSIC HAS ERASED ALL THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT IS PERMITTED AND HAS MOVED BEYOND ORDINARY LIFE . MUSIC IS THE MOST POWERFUL, MYSTICAL PHENOMENON ON PLANET EARTH . AUTHORITIES LOST CONTROL OVER THE MUSIC A LONG TIME AGO. OTHER FORMS OF ART YOU CAN STILL KEEP UNDER CONTROL BUT MUSIC IS AN ABSOLUTELY
FREE ART . IN RELATION TO PAINTINGS , I JUST WANT SOMEONE TO BUY MY ART BECAUSE THERE IS SOME KIND OF ARTISTIC SATISFACTION IN KNOWING SOMEBODY WANTED IT IN THEIR LIFE. I GUESS WHEN I WILL DIE PEOPLE WILL REALIZE THAT I LIVED BECAUSE I COULD CREATE ART. TELL US ABOUT SOMEBODY INTERESTING OR INFLUENTIAL TO YOU?I I MET A GUY WHILE I WAS TRAVELING AND HE INVITED ME TO STAY AT HIS HOME IN SAN FRANCISCO. I AGREED BECAUSE I WANTED TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE AREA. HE PLAYED AT NIGHT IN JAZZ CLUBS AND HE WAS A SELF-TAUGHT MUSICIAN . HE WAS BORN IN JAPAN AND HE HAD A FAMILY OVER THERE WHICH FORBADE HIM TO ENGAGE IN JAZZ. DESPITE WHAT THEY WANTED, HE CROSSED THE OCEAN AND CONTINUED TO DO WHAT HE WANTED TO DO - MUSIC. HIS FAMILY REFUSED HIM, AND NOW HE LIVES IN SAN FRANCISCO BECAUSE HE LOST HIS HOME, HIS PARENTS, HIS PAST. BUT HE IS REALLY A VERY GOOD JAZZ MUSICIAN IN SAN FRANCISCO.
HORSES, IT GOES BACK TO WHEN I WAS LITTLE GIRL. I GREW UP OUTSIDE OF PHILLY AND THAT ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCED ME A LOT. WHEN I SAW HORSES FOR THE FIRST TIME, I JUST FELT THAT I WANTED "THAT". MY MOM EVEN TOLD ME STORIES ABOUT HORSES AND SHE COULD IDENTIFY THAT I WAS CONNECTED WITH THEM. WHEN I WAS SIX YEARS OLD SHE GOT ME RIDING LESSONS AND THAT'S HOW I STARTED. HOW MANY YEARS DID YOU TRAIN HORSES? I TRAINED HORSES FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS. THERE WAS ONE HORSE THAT I REALLY LIKED. HER NAME WAS CALAMITY JANE. SHE WAS VERY YOUNG AND YOU KNOW, JUST LIKE YOUNG PEOPLE, SHE HAD AN ATTITUDE. I TOLD HER EVERY DAY "CALAMITY JANE LETS NOT DIE TODAY" BECAUSE SHE WAS SO HEAD STRONG. SHE WAS FULL OF POWER AND SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THAT. SHE WAS A VERY BEAUTIFUL HORSE. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT LINKING YOUR LIFE TO THEM , YOU NEVER WILL LOSE THIS FEELING OF RESPECT AND LOVE TOWARDS THE ANIMAL.
MEISA CHASE
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD. MY PARENTS ALWAYS ENCOURAGED MY CREATIVITY. IT WAS ALWAYS ART AND
WHAT DO YOU DREAM ABOUT, IN GENERAL? I’D LIKE THE CITY TO HAVE MORE OR-
GANIZATIONS WHERE YOU CAN GO AND EXPERIENCE A CONNECTION WITH ANIMALS. FOR MYSELF....I LOVE ART, BUT TODAY ART IS A LOT LIKE PROSTITUTION. THERE ARE NO RULES. THERE ARE DEFINITELY PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO HELP YOU, BUT THERE ARE ALSO PEOPLE WHO JUST MANIPULATE YOU AND USE ART AS A TOOL. ART DOESN'T FUNCTION AS IT SUPPOSED TO. ART IS SUPPOSED TO BE SOMETHING THAT CAN BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER. I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP FOCUSING ON WHAT IS WRONG AND START FOCUSING ON WHAT IS RIGHT. THERE IS TOO MUCH ATTENTION ON THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF HARRISBURG. LETS FOCUS ON WHAT IS ACTUALLY WORKING, BECAUSE I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO WORK ON MAKING IT BETTER.
"
WELL MEISA, THANK YOU FOR GIVING ONLY HARRISBURG" THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THIS INTERVIEW AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOUR ART IN HARRISBURG AGAIN IN THE NEAR FUTURE. YOU'RE VERY WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME IN "ONLY HARRIS-
BURG".
