The number of donors also rose to double that of the previous year and the HDT Trustees and team express continued profound thanks to the many contributors who support Harrow’s ambitions.

Harrow is not a wealthy school. Unlike some schools, we do not have a large endowment. School fees cover operating costs only and therefore non-fee income, of which the HDT contributed 56% in 2020/21, is critical to funding capital projects and initiatives outside the day-to-day running of the School. This is all the more acute this year, as the Harrow 450 building programme has started and the bills are now coming in!

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS Affordability of school fees is the single biggest issue facing the independent schools’ sector today. This is why Harrow is focused on building its bursary funds substantially over the next decade, not only to offer a Harrow education to more boys facing significant barriers to progress, but also to alleviate the growing pressures of school fees on the “squeezed middle”. Nick Shryane - Bursar
Transforming Lives The Governors have set a goal to provide at least 30% of Harrovians (compared with the current 14%) with means-tested bursaries averaging 50% by 2025/26.
Our ambition is: •W ithin this decade, 250 of 830 Harrovians will be in receipt of bursary support.
• 1 00 of these boys will be on 100% bursaries
Funding The long-term aim is to build the endowment fund so that its income will support all the bursary needs of the School. This will take time. Over the next ten years, bursaries will continue to be funded through a combination of:
• A ‘pay-as-you-go’ approach – funds raised for bursaries are spent on immediate bursary needs spread over the recipient’s time at Harrow.
• I ncome from endowed funds – the School draws approximately 3.5% annual income from the endowed funds to invest in bursaries.

WIDENING ACCESS In 2020, the School announced the introduction of entrance bursaries that, while not necessarily requiring scholarship standard, will be made to boys in years 7, 9 and 12 from a range of backgrounds and supported by a dedicated Access Advisor. Gitanjali Bhattacharya (Head of Partnerships and Access) arrived at Harrow in 2021 and has already started to develop relationships with local partner schools in the Borough of Harrow, and more widely throughout the UK, to identify potential candidates and to oversee the welfare of the boys throughout their time at the School.
THE MAY FAMILY AWARD
The May Family Award is a new fully endowed bursary, established by an OH family, enabling a promising boy from London who would otherwise be unable to meet the financial requirements, to join Harrow in the Sixth Form. The award will commence in 2022, following a major bequest from an Old Harrovian, Adrian May (West Acre 19843), who passed away in September 2021.

FROM HARROW TO WASHINGTON Mumtaz Habib (Bradbys 2003³) is currently a senior British diplomat working for the Foreign Office in Washington DC, a career he would never have imagined possible twenty years earlier. In 2000, aged 14 and unable to speak a word of English, Mumtaz fled Afghanistan and arrived in the UK as a refugee seeking asylum. He settled with his sister in Harrow.
The day I came to Harrow, my world opened up,” states Mumtaz. “I was given a wonderful education, offered remarkable opportunities and had life-changing experiences. My time on the Hill taught me to believe in myself. I developed the confidence

He was subsequently appointed an MCC Foundation Young Ambassador for his work on girls’ education and his outreach efforts with inner-city children in particular, encouraging participation in cricket and the character-building values that come with the game.

OUTREACH AND PARTNERSHIP The HDT continues to support Shaftesbury Enterprise, which is focused on improving the educational outcomes and life opportunities for young people in the School’s locality, particularly for those who face significant barriers to progress. In 2021, Shaftesbury Enterprise raised and disbursed close to £500,000 and has supported more than 10,000 young people through the Covid pandemic.

In summer 2021, Young Harrow Foundation (YHF) moved into offices provided by the School, enabling Harrow to work side by side with the charity to support young people in Harrow. A membership organisation set up by John Lyon’s Charity, YHF supports the local voluntary sector by focusing on the five key areas of mental health, physical health, inequality, youth violence and employment.

A GROUNDBREAKING YEAR 2021 saw both the beginning of landmark developments on the Hill, and the ongoing rolling programme of renovations and improvements crucial to the maintenance of our heritage buildings and the smooth running of life in the Houses.
Science building In February 2021, following much anticipation and planning, the Head Master turned over the first spade of earth for the Harrow 450 development project. A new access road running from the Watford Road near Northwick Park Hospital, along the back of the rugby pitches and athletics track and right up to the Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall was constructed to enable the building works. Then, in September 2021, ground was broken for the new science building.
The science building will have 214 reinforced concrete piled foundations ranging from 10m to 20m deep to retain the ground and anchor the building on the hillside.
Between September and December there have been:

REFOUNDING OUR FUTURE THE HARROW 450 CAMPAIGN
While much of the School’s Harrow 450 programme looks to Celebrate our Past, it is the job of the HDT to focus on Refounding our Future. This year, we launched the Harrow 450 Campaign to raise £100 million and encourage all members of the Harrow community, OHs, parents, staff and friends of Harrow to Play their Part and support the School’s 450 ambitions. All those who choose to contribute, at whatever level, will become valued members of the 450 Society.
‘Play Your Part’’ says Jim Glover (Rendalls 19783 ), Chairman of the Harrow Development Trust.
“In April 2021, as a Governor, I was able to pay my first visit back to the Hill for over a year. The grounds looked splendid, as they always do in spring, but most eye-catching was the construction work that had commenced on the east side of the Hill. Has an enterprise of such scale and ambition ever been attempted before at Harrow? Even the venerable Old Schools building was covered in cladding while a considerable and careful renovation was undertaken. During my visit, I concluded that we have all enjoyed the special opportunities offered to us by Harrow at some point in our lives. For that reason, in my Harrow 450 campaign message, I urge all to ‘Play Your Part’ and support the HDT’s Harrow 450 fundraising objectives.”

15 July 1960 – 12 November 2021 A HARROW GIANT WITH A GENUINE, deep love of his alma
mater, many of you will have known our beloved former colleague and friend Jeremy personally, whether during your time at the School as a friend or House mate, or through his work as Harrow Association Manager or, latterly, Associate Director of the HDT.
All those who make a gift of £450 or more (£45 for current Harrovians and staff), either as a single donation or by instalments, will become members of the 450 Society.
Jeremy joined Druries in 1974, under John Leaf. He was Head of House, played footer, cricket and soccer, all for the School 1st XI, and was a masterful squash player. After returning to Harrow in 2003, he relished the projects he undertook and approached them with great gusto, having a large network of Old Harrovian friends. Transferring to the HDT in 2008, he approached the challenge of fundraising with equal enjoyment. He was owes him a debt of gratitude, and organised many events

“Jeremy was a tremendous colleague, possessed a really witty sense of humour, and made a telling difference in the work he carried out on the Hill,” recalls Doug Collins. His personality, friendliness and enthusiasm for all things Harrovian will be greatly missed, both here in the School community and, we’re sure, externally among his friends within OH community.

Leaving a gift in your Will Bequests have been enormously important to Harrow since its earliest years, shaping the School that exists today. Leaving a gift in your Will is your opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the School for generations to come. If you inform us of your intention to remember Harrow in your Will, you will be invited to join the Edward Bowen Society and will receive invitations to special donor events. The HDT is a registered charity and therefore bequests from UK taxpayers are exempt from inheritance tax. This can be a substantial benefit to your estate and
