La Casa Community House

Surveying project - Dance Square

Site of Main project - 360 Building

A building that plays the centre part in summer workshops, winter studies, and all year-round community events. This place is the “base camp” during the yearly field trip and is where information and stories are shared. La Casa.

As part of the November field trip asides from choosing the main site for our projects, additional sites were assigned to undertake surveying and recording work, these were aimed at understanding how to collect site information and log it accurately. The Dance square.

The location chosen for the main project is as 3 storey building situated to the south of “La Casa”, chosen because of its unique character and the ability to circulate in its entirety through the tight dimly lit alleyways that bound its walls. The 360 building.

The summer workshop was centred around the unused “Casa Monache”, which would later be known as simply “La Casa”, across a week students, locals, teachers and refugees were set the task to transform this building into a communal space by working together as a group and learning from each other. The project would be the first of a series of future workshops that would see the refurbishment of “ La Casa” into a place for gatherings, meetings and parties. The July workshop saw the refurbishment of 3 spaces, one would an elaborate timber floor whist the other two a hand laid stone floor, other works included installation of lighting and balustrade to the staircase.

Mudchute Workshop November 2019 Mudchute is a week long project that is run as part of the Technology module, this is aimed at designing and assembling a structure in a small amount of time. A number of students have the opportunity to do this workshop in Belmonte, with the project based in “La Casa”. The rest of the students are based on Mudchute Farm, London. The project set out to build a timber canopy structure that would be used on the terrace to protect an oven, creating an outdoor social space. The central aim is to use to minimise the amount of waste, this means designing and constructing with a set amount of available material. Through a brief titled “skills exchange” the central ideas was to bring all sorts of skills, from local refugees, villagers and organisations and learn whilst building the structure together.

Introduction to Francesco took place during a chat with locals on Mudchute Workshop in February, on the evening of the final day.

Francesco Saliceti

During his talk he raised the importance of keeping local food traditions alive, he explained that community ovens served this purpose and brought people together by using food as a centre point. His ambition is to do this through his restaurant in Longobardi, by using traditional dishes, local produce and a table full of people to keep the story of food alive.
