Design Brief The aim of the project is to produce a final design and solution to a space which we are to research and look into ourselves. We have to think about some sort of a space which we are interested in designing, then we have to research said space and look into existing areas. We then have to look into each of these areas and think about how they were made, designed, and also think about the different materials used. Once we have done all this we must begin to think about our own solution. I have decided that my space that I will look into and create a solution for will be a modernized, large house. This interests me because I like to look at large houses and think about how they are made, how much they cost to make and maintain, who lives there, etc. So it will be fun and interesting to look further into them and ultimately design my own solution.
Specification For my house design to function correctly and to perform like an accommodation building should, it should have certain traits. Such as: - It should include at least 1 room to sleep in, which has a bed, places to keep clothes and personal items, etc. - There should be a seating area inside the house which includes leisure items and activities, such as; a television, books to read, etc. - There should also be a food preparation area situated in the building, including cooking utensils, essentials for cooking food and preparing, etc. - Should include at least 1 room to be used as a toilet, and also a bathroom, for personal hygiene. - There should be an area to eat, this could be a dining room, etc. - It is not necessary but the design could include an outdoor seating area with doors interconnecting the interior and exterior of the design. This outdoor seating area could lead onto a garden, etc. - Needs parts to let in natural light by having large windows which can be easily opened to let heat out when it is hot, but also they can easily keep hot air in for when it’s cold. - Should also include some sort of garage, either for storing vehicles, for storing items, etc.
Location Christchurch Harbour I have decided to use Christchurch Harbour as my location because there is a lot of open space and areas where I can place my structure. I also would like my design to be close to the seafront because it is a holiday home therefore the beach would be easily accessible. Also Christchurch is within a close distance of three quite large booming cities in, Southampton, Portsmouth, and Bournemouth. This means that there are these busy areas which are close by if you wanted to go there. And also it’s not too far from London it would just be a few hours on the train so that’s another large bustling city with lots of things to do.
Burkehill House I like the whole design of this house, interior and exterior, because I like modern architecture rather than ancient architecture because to me it just looks more professional. Also I like to use sharp edges and distinctive lines in my drawing and designing, and this house has a lot of it. I also really like the layout of the interior because it all works so well in the way that it’s laid out. The living room and kitchen come together because it is an open plan design, and I really like this. But then it doesn’t seem to empty in there because there’s a lot of furniture and cabinets and columns splitting some of the space up. I like the colour scheme of both the interior and exterior of the building because the wooden parts and the bright white brick parts contrast each other and work really well together. Then the interior there is a darker shade of wood used for the kitchen cabinets and for any drawers, and then the same bright white is used for table tops and work surfaces.
Hawthorn Residence I like the design of this home because it is built on a site which long length wise, meaning that they didn’t build the main chunk of the building as high. I like this because I feel that it makes the building look better also I think it makes it more practical. I also like the open plan style which links the kitchen, dining room, and the doors to the pool and garden all into one larger room, but because of the furniture and columns on the edges of the glass it feels like it splits the space up so it doesn’t feel boring to look at. I really like the colour scheme used for both the interior and exterior, I like the contrast between the bright white walls and the black marble table-tops.
Plan 65614BS-Architectural Designs These are some photos and images of a house designed by the company Architectural Designs. This house has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 1 floor and a 2 car garage. I like this design because I like the colours of the design and I also like the shape design. I like that the shape is very linear and cubic shapes placed together and on-top of each other. I like the colour scheme because I like how the walls are a bright white colour and then the parts of wood and the roof contrast the walls because they are a dark brown colour and the walls are white.
These images are of the home plan that I recreated on ArchiCAD, I used the plan that I found for this design, to recreate it in ArchiCAD. I followed the design as closely as I could, I did not bother with the scale because I wasn’t worried about the sizing I just wanted to recreate it to understand how the deign works and how the placement and distribution of the rooms around the space worked for the design as a whole.
Collage Work
These are some collages that I made, I made these because it helps me to think of ideas. The image on the left is very linear and cubic in the design of the stairs and the furniture that I added on top of the background image. The image above I followed the idea of a grey colour scheme because I feel that it makes the room look more modern.
Collage Plans
These drawings are some plan drawings that I produced from the collages I created on the previous slide. I think that it is good that I completed these drawings because it helps me to visualise a space without seeing it from every angle which will help when I come to designing my ideas and developing them to work in all the ways that my design needs to work. It also helps when I come to think about scaling and size of objects and furniture, and the spacing of the objects. The thing I don’t like about them are that they are quite plain and there isn’t much happening in each of the rooms.
Frank Lloyd Wright Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, who used a style of design called organic architecture. This is when the building or structure links and connects with the environment and nature around it. He wanted to design structures which worked in harmony with both humanity and its environment.
Fallingwater This is Fallingwater, it is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous structures. I really like this building because it doesn’t look out of place even though it is in the middle of a vast forest, this is because it was built onto the waterfall and it follows the shape of the drop there are no large support columns to make the building overhang. I also like this structure because the design itself is very linear and cubic, this is good because it makes the design look very modern, this is also the same because of the use of glass, there is a lot of glass and windows around the structure and I feel this gives a building a more modern look and it can also completely change how a structure can be seen depending on what the environment around it looks like.
Winslow House This building is Winslow House, it is another famous structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is situated in River Forest, Illinois. This building was the first major commission as an independent architect. I like the design of this structure because it is a linear design as there are lots of straight edges. I also like the colour scheme that he used for this design as I feel the brown and orange contrast the white used for the columns and for the window frames and the door frames.
Design Structure After looking into Frank Lloyd Wright’s work I have decided that I want the theme of my ideas to be about linking my ideas and designs with nature and the environment around it. Making it look like it fits into the environment.
Primary Research This is a part of my primary research, for this I placed some items together, they were parts of a broken cello, and a piece of wood. I then drew these items together and thought about how they work together and the structural forms that they create. I liked how the wood coming down from the top looked like a archway and I thought this might work well for a structure design to have a large archway at the front or the side of the main structure.
Sculpture Work
These images are from early stages of a second sculpture that I made form the drawings I produced from the cello and the wood. They show different ideas that I was thinking about designing. The pictures above are where all the different sections are connected at the edges which I like the idea of but where they are different sections you can see the gaps between each part. And the images below are another way I thought it could be set out, for these I thought I could have the sections flowing with each other in the same shape as the first idea but have the sections split apart, I like this because it gives the sculpture more depth and I also like how the gaps created become walkways and different entrances to the structure.
These are some more images of the second sculpture that I made, I have made some more changes to it, I have included the pillar type structure coming off the roof because this is representing the piece of wood which was placed in a similar way for the objects that I drew. I like it because I feel like it adds an extra layer of detail to the sculpture and the structure as a whole. Although I feel like a may have made it too large for the structure because the top part is very wide in comparison to the part which is touching the floor.
These are images of some different ideas that I had for the style of the front entrance of the structure. The top image is a design which includes an archway as the main entrance I like this because it links with the curved edges of the main body of the structure, Although I think that I made the actual opening to large. I think this because the opening is almost as tall as the structure itself. The image underneath is for a more linear design to the front entrance, I like how there are multiple openings that can be used. I also like it because the height of the opening runs parallel to the height and shape of the part that it is cut out from. The thing that I don’t like about this idea is that it leaves a large open space above the opening, and also the part that the opening is cut from is too long for the structure so there is a large section which protrudes out form the main structure, and I feel like this makes the structure look strange.
Sculpture Work These are some images of an architectural sculpture I made from the objects that I drew and photographed. I started off by following the curved shape at the end of the main structure, then I added the long narrow section at the front. When I had finished the main structure I decided that when I was photographing it, to place a figure in front of the sculpture to show the scale of the structure and for me to work out myself the scaling and whether I wanted to make it larger or maybe smaller.
Sketch-Up Development Work
These are some images of the model which I made on the previous slides. I made this model in google sketch-up, I then made the image look as if it were hand drawn to give a more natural look. I produced these so that I could move the previous model forwards and make the design look and function like a real building.
Ground Floor This is a model which I produced from the sculpture work and the drawings which I produced of the objects I looked at. This is the ground floor of the model. I used the shape of the cello as inspiration for the shape of the main structure. I like this design because it is a very unique and modern design but also because of the curves and flowing design it links in with the environment and nature around it.
First Floor This is the first floor of the ArchiCAD model which I produced form the physical model and the drawings of the broken cello. I like how the model came out as whole because I think that the design as a whole fits into the ideas that I had of modern looking but also fitting into the environment. I think this because I think the design shape flows very well and also I think that the design looks good because there are lots of open areas and there lots of glass windows and panes therefore this makes the design look more modern and it make the building seem more open.
Design These are some initial ideas for another design. I used the images of the objects which I made sculptures from as the main source of inspiration for this design. I started by putting two circles where the two curves are placed on my sculpture, then I added other shapes to the original two to create new areas for new rooms of the building. So far I like this design because I feel that the structure design is very unique and it flows quite well despite there being straight edges and curves.
ArchiCAD Development This is the ArchiCAD design for the plan and elevation drawings which I produced from the primary research I was looking at. This is the ground floor of the structure. I like how it came out because I like how shape of the structure looks with the linear sections and the circular parts.
ArchiCAD Development
This is the next stage of the ArchiCAD model, I have now added the first floor to the design. I like how it has come out because I feel like the different contrasting sections of the shape work well together, because the linear areas contrast the circular parts and they make the other stand out well.
Rosenbaum House This is Rosenbaum House, it is another famous structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is situated in Riverside Drive, Florence, United States. I like the design of this building because I like the way it looks similar to its surroundings, for example the building is majorly built out of wood so it looks similar to the forest and open spaces surrounding it. I also like that the design is very linear and cubic, how there are lots of straight lines and edges. I also feel that the use of windows and lots of glass make the building look more modern even though the main design makes the building look older.
Mckimm Designed Home
This building is situated in Brighton, Australia. Which is a bayside suburb of Melbourne. It was designed by Mckimm, and is a 60’s inspired modern family home. The house has a slim, floating roof that cantilevers out beyond black framed windows. Large sliding glass doors lead out to a tennis court, pool and cabana. I like the design of this house because I like that the back of the house is designed around the shape of the pool and the building splits and goes either side of the pool. I also like the colour design of the exterior and also the interior, I like the contrast between the large areas of white and little hints of black and dark brown to contrast the white areas.
Initial Model These are some images of a sculpture I made to show the main structure of the Mckimm designed home. I only made a sculpture for the outline of the shape as this is the area of this design of which I find the most important and will be the most helpful in producing my final solution. I like the archway that this model creates, it feels like this could be the entrance to a larger structure or even just a structure itself depending on scaling. I will use this geometric design style as I move this design process forward.
Design
This is the initial design for an idea that I have come up with, these are just initial quick drawings. I didn’t design the interior here because I feel that it would come out better using something like ArchiCAD. I like this design because the shape is very linear and it is also cubic as I used this idea when I was deigning it I wanted it to look like lots of different shapes placed together, alongside, or on top of each other. When I come to design this in further detail on ArchiCAD I will out more thought into how the space will work and I will develop the idea further to make the final outcome more unique and appealing.
Design
This is my previous design idea but fleshed out in ArchiCAD, I have made a few changes to the exterior of the building, I have changed the patio area outside from being a platform with stairs leading down to a platform with walkways out onto the grass area around. I have also changed the first floor design instead of the block on top being over part of the right hand side, it follows the shape of the bottom floor.
Design
These images are of the interior of the building which I have designed, I like the way that the interior works because it is all open and it all follows on from room to room and the design of the interior flows. And even though the design is open plan it doesn’t feel empty because of the positioning of the furniture inside. Although I like the interior as a whole I feel I need to make changes to it and make more interior space because I feel like it is not big enough to incorporate everything that I want to include. I think I need to add room for at least one more bedroom and I also think I need to add more communal spaces and also an outdoor communal space.
Design Development This is the development of the design which I created, all of these images show the different areas which I have developed. I have added an extra living space above the main building which includes another bedroom and another bathroom, this is because I felt like the original design wasn’t large enough and I wanted to meet my specification. And I also thought about how you would get to and from each different building, so i put a walkway between the buildings. I also added an outdoor social and living area next to the main structure, this is because I felt like the design needed an outdoor area to add to the quality aspects of the design. In this outdoor area I have included a swimming pool, a covered area with a dining table and also a bar with stools to include a more social experience to the design.
Design Development These are some rendered images of my design and the development. I have images of the main structure, the outdoor leisure area, and the extra living area away from the main building. I like the way that the design looks with shadows and when it is rendered properly. I really like how the outdoor leisure looks because of the outdoor lamps that I added to it, it gives off an ambient vibe to the area and I also like how the light comes up from under the water in the pool and it makes the image look like a real picture.
Residence in SĂŁo Paulo I think that the design of this building is good because I like the way that the whole design of the interior and the connecting exterior is all open plan, I like this because it makes the building feel bigger and easier to navigate around. But because of the furniture and everything it makes the space feel full up and interesting to look at. I also like the use of large parts made of glass then areas made from concrete because it adds a distinctive contrast to the exterior of the design.
These are some drawings that I made from the images of the home, for the line drawing I looked at how the structure works, and when I drew the colour version I focused on how the colours of the materials worked in contrasting and complementing each other
This is a design I came up with after looking at the Residence in SĂŁo Paulo, I liked the idea of the geometric design for the structure. I also liked the way that the pool links straight into the patio, which is what I've tried to incorporate into this design.
Final Solution FIRST FLOOR These are some designs for my final solution, I came up with this design by looking at what I liked from my previous ideas. For example I liked the curved edge design for the side from a previous design so I wanted to keep that aspect in my idea. I also kept with the geometric style of most of my designs as I felt this was the best design style to follow for what I want to produce as my final piece.

Model Work
These are some images of an initial model that I produced from the designs on the previous slide. I like the way that the main shape came out, I feel like it still has organic features about it but then it also has geometric shapes which makes it unique. When I made this model I decided to draw the basic outline of the structure onto the cardboard base and then stick each individual wall on top of the outline. I did this because it gives the correct scale and length to the model.

ArchiCAD Final Design
These are some images from ArchiCAD, this is the ground floor of the design that I came up with. I like the way that the structure came out because I feel like the straight geometric lines contrast the sweeping, circular shape on the side of the structure. I will continue with this design, and once I have also created the second floor I will go back and add all the interior furniture and make the structure look more like a home.
This is the second floor of my final design, I like the way that the main structure looks because it feels unique but also organic, I will now go onto make development and changes to the design in general, and I will also begin to add furniture to the interior of the structure to make it seem more like an actual home rather than just a design.
I have added some furniture to the interior of the design. I have also made some changes to the structure of the interior, this is because once I added some furniture, the positioning of some doors and doorway opening overlapped some important pieces of furniture so I had to move some things around.
This is the final stage of my design, I like the outcome that I has achieved from the research and development I have been conducting. I like the final structure shape that I decided to go with as I feel this fits my research and that I also wanted to make my design have harmony between organic shapes and design and geometric shapes and design.
Final Model Development
I have some developmental changes to my final design. I have reworked all the lighting in my design, I have placed the lighting in more precise places than before and I have placed a lot more lighting in there now. Also on the ground floor of my structure I added an outdoor seating area and a wooden shelter to the outside area, I did this because I felt like for this to really function as a holiday home it needed some sort of outdoor activity or outdoor social area. On the first floor I put a wall splitting the large open area into two and in one side I decided to make it another bedroom because there was only two bedrooms in the design before and I felt like the design needed more bedrooms.
Final Model Development These are some more rendered images and an elevation view of my final design. For the outdoor social area I decided to add a back wall to the sheltered area and also to add an outdoor bar to the area because I feel like this enhances the area rather than just having a sheltered section with no real use, which brings nothing to the outdoor section. For the main section of the house which includes the staircase and the kitchen/dining area, I changed the lighting, before I just had generic light sources scattered around for the rendered image from outside but now I have removed the light sources and included actual ceiling lights to give the image a more real feel by including these lights.
Final Model Development
These pictures are rendered images from my final design. The image in the bottom right is of the main hallway on the first floor of the structure. It includes a large skylight directly above the centre of the area, I added this because it adds a lot of natural light to the area and gives the area a happy feel to it because there is so much sunlight which is allowed into the area because of the many windows, skylight and the large folding doors. The image in the bottom left is of the downstairs living room, I like the way that this room came out because it has lots of different things taking place in it, it has a large dining table on the left side of the room, it also includes a seating area on the right side of the room, and a television and a large sofa at the end of the room. There is also a good amount of natural light which is allowed into the room because of the wo large windows on either side, but then there area also lots of interior lights spread around which light up the area when they are needed to.
