“ LANDSCAPE AS A FUSION CORE? ” Critical regionalism has been a controversial issue since the 19th centuries. It is a concept focusing on the idea on fusing architecture with genius loci - an idea which was recognized as a fantasy during the 18th centuries. It has created a reformation of thinking in architecture field and has affected the field till nowadays. Looking back at the field of landscape architecture, it has been a tattered development since we abandoned the identity of landscape gardeners and became landscape architects. “What is landscape architecture?” , has been surrounding our field for a long time since Frederick Law Olmsted.
What if landscape as a fusion core? What if landscape shouldn’t be a field focusing on creating beautiful gardens nor creating spaces just to fulfil the social needs. What if landscape could act as a medium which considers regionalism and genius loci, combining the spirit of gardens and local social needs? It could be a more in-depth thought compared to the “propaganda-designs” nowadays. Or maybe it could change the identity of landscape architects around the world, making them a new generation which consider conditions and restrictions from any field, becoming the fusion core of every sector.

[NON-NAMED] is a design project located between Kezailiao fishing port and Yuanzhonggang Wetlands. Due to its unusual loci and history development, the site has presented a ridiculous phenomenom which it couldn’t stand for a clear position of is own. So we decided to reconfigure the context, culture and image the
site would have while bridging it to its blank history lines. We seek to bring connections no matter in a superstitious, local relation, or future consideration angle, trying to find out the genius loci and identity of the site, and the value it supposed to have.

Besides on analysis of reality, we also predicted and imagined a possible relationship between human-god, human-nature, god-nature and the axis connected between these characters. We found out that people tried to connect with gods through unique environments, it is either a space where it could reach the sky the most or a wide space where it could receive the most information.

A theory has been predicted that the miserable situation that Kezailiao’s people faced was a punishment from Mazu. It is a superstition theory based on the religious activity of locals.

According to the analysis, we find that this base has a phenomenon of faults in the development of space history, and its intricate development context has another period of cultural blanks that cannot be studied. Whether it is from the perspective of the base vein or the evolution of the time axis to observe and study the land, it presents a ridiculous, contradictory phenomenon that cannot give people a clear direction and answer. Therefore, we try to use the concept of a timeline reincarnation to try to explore the civilization and development of the land that may have an opportunity in the past. We try to return to the original, return to nature as a starting point, try to think about the role that this land should play, in order to infer and shape the space construction and mode that it should have.

From centuries ago, walking have been proven as a source of creativity and knowledge. During the era of Greece, Plato has stated a debation from a square towards another. Aristotle has also discussed topics while walking in the corridors everytime. They named it as “moving classrooms”. During phase 3, we wished we could create spaces base on local habits that could inspire thoughts of locals to develop the land which has lost its directions. A compact system of measurement of trees have been studied and classified to make sure the design is logical.

Based on the village which originated from the seas, live along the seas and relies on the seas, Mazu has been their object of worship from a long time ago. They have depending on Mazu as the most important religious figure. Whenever the fisherman go overseas or came back along way from marine fishery, they will worship Mazu as a sign of protection from rough tides and accident. We designed a place faced to the ocean for Mazu temple’s construction. It acts as a zooming point of the whole site due to its closed nature. Its the only place where the interior connects with the outer space.

People set up some landmarks, signs, and roadblocks to increase the spatial impression and direction of a region. Here, we used a strong wall as a directional indicator to introduce people into the base. There is only one clear road to enter the base to choose from. It is guided by the eucalyptus trees on both sides, along the slope into the main building, into an unknown space. The eucalyptus trees are neatly arranged at a 4x4 spacing. The clear conditioning metaphor has a clear concept and a solemn and serious sense, suggesting that people have gradually stepped into a quiet space.
The abandoned dorm provided accomodation spaces for workers during the earlier era. In order to allow employees to focus on their work, in fact, the configuration in the dormitory is mainly simple. It is designed as a compact space which fit one worker each room.

Taiwan was once descirbed as a formosa a long time ago, but it has lost the precious title once the Taiwanese steppped into the land. It once has a beautiful coastline stuffed with beautiful reef rocks. It lost its beauty as soon as the industrial revolution started. Industrial technologies was impported and the greed of people eager to earn money through fast
economy has destroyed the coastline to built abalone farms and ports. But the phnomenom didn’t last long as it becomes over populated. So we aim to set up a program and design to solve the massive environment problem faced by Taiwan nowadays, hoping to return its beauty back to the era where it once entitled “formosa”.
“ Once formosa, now gone Site Loci
Going through analysis, we found out that almost over 50% of the coastline in Taiwan has been constructed into ports and farms. Although our project is nation- wide, we planned to start our project on a site which was situated at the east coast of Taipei city. It was surrounded by massive amount of abandoned abalone farms, and its structure protected from rough tides is suitable for our project to start.

Wildness, a synonym for freedom and unrestrainedness, symbolizes unfettered vitality. In this modern society trapped in the jungle of cement, from the narrow room to the balcony, surrounded by the greenery that hits the four sides, feel the wild atmosphere that can not be realized in the city.Such a small balcony space is exactly what modern people need, and it is also a feast for vision and soul.

“Landscape could speak for itself, what we should do is to listen to its requirements Encountering nature since childhood has inspired me into the landscape architecture field. I believe in Genius Loci. My designs are processes to discover the identity of spaces, and practices to create more mature designs. Its an iteration of carefully listening, analyzing and communicating ideas full of accumulated experiences, emotions, and future desires. It helps gives ways to concepts that allow me to achieve meaningful and soulful results.

“The climatic condition, culture, myth, and craft of a region are not to be reduced to indigenous forms. Both ancient and modern cultures are not to the product of a single heritage, but rather hybrids of several cultures found in region’s past. A global modernization continues to reduce the relevance of agrarian-based culture, and our connection to past ways of life is broken, as the presence of universal world culture overpowers regionalist tendencies. Therefore, regional culture must not be taken for granted as automatically imposed by place but, rather, cultivated and presented through the built environment.
