The North Fitzroy Sustainable House is facing the west direction, the site is not really in a good direction, because the house will not get much winter sun.

Zen Architect use passive heating through the north-oriented glass and courtyard. They maximize the use of glass window in the north side of the building, so the sun can go directly into the house.

They located the family room, in a clever place, which is just in front of north windows, so they could attain maximum light, as it will be the place for the main activities.

Furthermore, the other important element, is the usage of louvre in the north part which could allow the winter sun to penetrate inside and block the summer sun from entering the house. In addtion, the usage of north facing two storey will distribute the lights and the heat (especially in the winter) within the house.

The North Fitzroy Sustainable House is also using shadow devices to take advantage of winter and also the summer sun. Moreover, one of the devices that is useful in this house is the louvre. The house made use of fixed external louvres to the northern faced and adjustable external louvres to the western faced. This louvre could block the summer sun from penetrating the house. On the other hand, it also allow the winter sun to penetrate deep into the house. However, it is better to allocate the louvre in the a region of 29 degrees, as it could maximize the advantages there are for the house.
