London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles and now Atlanta; luxury and sophisticated shopping has come to the capital of the South. On September 18th, OliverMcMillan CEO, Dene Oliver, Buckhead Coalition President, Sam Massell and Mayor Kasim Reed commemorated the opening of Buckhead Atlanta. The long-awaited project was originally called the Streets of Buckhead, which lay derelict during the Great Recession for three years under the original developer, Ben Carter Properties LLC. In 2011, California-based OliverMcMillan took over the project and morphed the eight-acre site into a massive $1 billion redevelopment project, now called Buckhead Atlanta. The project has been the catalyst for the recent changes in Buckhead, notably the newly renovated façade of Lenox Mall on Peachtree Road and the upcoming face-lift of Phipps Plaza. Buckhead Atlanta’s credentials were further enhanced when OliverMcMillan snagged Atlanta’s iconic shape-wear giant, Spanx Ltd. Its billionaire founder, Sara Blakely, will take up 86,000 square feet, the site of her new offices and with a city skyline view to match. First-time opulent retailers will make their debut in Buckhead Atlanta, namely Christian Louboutin, COURAGE.b., Brunello Cucinelli, Tod’s, Dyptique and Warby Parker. Scoop NYC will open its first store in the Southeast. It’s a one-stop shop with shoes, accessories, designer and contemporary labels for both men and women. Founded in 1996 in New York, Scoop is aimed at a young fashion-conscious crowd. Atlanta can now boast that it has the best retailers and the best restaurants. American Cut, an upscale American steakhouse in partnership with Iron Chef Marc Forgione; and Lugo Cucina Italiana, specializing in handmade pasta, will open in 2015. Thirteen new restaurants will occupy Buckhead Atlanta in the next several months. Doraku Sushi, will open its sixth location in Buckhead Atlanta. It first opened in
South Beach, Fla. and has expanded to Vietnam and Hawaii with an extensive sushi and sake menu. The Gypsy Kitchen and The Southern Gentlemen are from the founders of Atlanta’s The Big Ketch and Tin Lizzy’s. Both these restaurants will share a 10,000 square foot space. The Gypsy Kitchen will be a Spanish fusion concept while the Southern Gentlemen is a gastropub. New York restaurateur Danny Meyer and Union Square Hospitality Group will open The Shake Shack, a first for Georgia at Buckhead Atlanta. The modern day “roadside” burger stand known for its 100% all-natural Angus beef burgers, delicious flat-top dogs, fresh-made frozen custard and craft beer. It will occupy about 2,500 square foot of space with a rooftop deck. Thirteen Pies, an intimate neighborhood restaurant (known as Fireside Pies in Texas) will serve wood-fired pizzas, hand-cut pasta, salads and homemade desserts. Georgetown Cupcakes, co-owners and sisters Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis, stars of the hit series “DC Cupcakes” on TLC will open a spot at Buckhead Atlanta. High on a hill amid the foliage-rich area of Historic Midtown Atlanta, proudly sits Stonehurst Place Bed & Breakfast, surrounded by high-rise buildings, gourmet restaurants, cafes, bars and Piedmont Park. In every aspect of the guest experience, Stonehurst Place surpasses the usual expectations of a Bed & Breakfast. In addition, this boutique inn has won numerous green awards, which should appeal to anyone’s eco-conscience!
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Stonehurst Place is a constant labor of love for owner and interior designer, Barb Shadomy. George Burch Hinman, a prominent engineer and contractor originally from England, built Stonehurst in 1896 for his wife and family of four children. Stonehurst belonged to the Hinman family until the 1996 death of the youngest daughter Ruth, who lived out her life in the home. Ms. Shadomy came across Stonehurst in 2006 while studying interior and garden design in England. She continued to be intrigued by Stonehurst after the project finished, and was surprised that while researching a later garden design project Stonehurst popped up again. Thinking it was a mere coincidence, she did more research and eventually fell in love with the historic residence. In 2007 she purchased the home, which sits on 2.3 acres, the largest residential plot in the heart of Midtown.
“I wanted Stonehurst Place to be as green and eco-sustainable as possible, and that was a hard mountain to climb,” says Ms. Shadomy. “It was like being a pioneer in so many ways. I was influenced by my English interior and garden design training, and by my travels throughout Europe. Renovating the historic home in an eco-conscious manner felt like the right thing to do.” “I’m all about the juxtaposition of old and new,” says Ms. Shadomy. “I have a fantasy of one day turning an old, unused English church into a small luxury hotel or residence.” For the Stonehurst Place project she commissioned award-winning historic preservation architect Stacie Monroe and her local architecture firm re:FORM, along with custom general contractor Wes Stone of John Wesley Hammer Construction. Ms. Shadomy closed the inn and, with this select team, spent the following 17 months performing extensive renovation and restoration to maintain the integrity and preserve the original structure of the home and its gardens.
Stonehurst boasts ten unobtrusively installed solar panels to heat water which, at the time of the renovation, was the largest residential solar-thermal installation on the East Coast. Other eco-friendly efforts include a gray-water recycling system used to irrigate the lush gardens.
Stonehurst Place is proud to be the only B&B in the area to collect rainwater, filter and treat it to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Drinking Water Standards. “It’s regularly tested and is just as clean and safe to drink as Atlanta’s municipal water. It’s used throughout the house, from drinking water to showering and cleaning,” says Ms. Shadomy. “Receiving the 2011 Champion Award from the Professional Association of Innkeepers International, given to the individual who best succeeded on behalf of the bed and breakfast industry, is the most rewarding of all the green accolades that Stonehurst Place has received. It was for our eco-friendly work, and the award continues to inspire us to press on and do more,” she adds. Ms. Shadomy’s design aesthetic throughout Stonehurst is sublime, chic and whimsical. The large front porch invites you into the grand open plan home with six luxurious rooms and suites. The color tones are soothing and neutral. The original fireplaces were all lovingly restored, and during the renovation they were able to keep most all of the original heart of pine flooring. Each bedroom is designed with thoughtful, contemporary and elegant decor. Marble vanities, large walk-in Corian showers with multiple shower heads, and spa tubs soothe your tired body. Nothing beats sleeping on the luxurious silky and award-winning bedding at Stonehurst Place, except for waking to the gourmet breakfast served each day! Free Wi-Fi and off-street parking, a rarity in Midtown, are included in the room rate. Interesting art, architecture and

The Gothic-like windows are fitted with a unique custom shade system designed by Ms. Shadomy. Magnetite insulation panes silence the sounds of traffic and minimize heat transference in every room of the home.
Each morning guests are welcomed to a two-course gourmet breakfast prepared with herbs and heirloom vegetables from the Stonehurst Place Kitchen Garden and served with their popular French-press fair trade organic coffee. An array of delicious sweet and savory treats is available to guests throughout the day, and you’re likely to find a guest enjoying this urban oasis in any of the common rooms, three porches or gardens with a plate of something seasonal, baked freshly that day. Nothing depicts this better than Red Brick Brewing Co.’s signature ale, “Hoplanta” an American India Pale Ale (IPA). The Red Brick Brewing Co. is the oldest brewery in Atlanta. It was founded as Atlanta Brewing Co. in 1993 and is still in operation. Located in the industrial district of West Midtown, the warehouse boasts a large red malt mill, they found abandoned in a meadow in England. After intensive refurbishment, it’s now used to grind the grains before they go into a large copper vat for the start of their old English brewing process. The brewery offers a regular and seasonal selection of beers from IPAs to whiskey barrel aged beers. “We brew 15 to 20 different beers in a year. Our best-selling ales are Laughing Skull Amber Ale and Hoplanta. Our core beers are the Seasonal and The Brick Mason series,” said Chris Morgan, the Event Coordinator.
Currently available are the A-Town Brown Ale and Matcha Super Green Yuzu IPA. This winter, the Divine Bovine Milk Stout will be available in early November and to celebrate their 21st anniversary, Rum Barrel Aged Saison is also available. Robert Budd, president of Red Brick Brewing Co., said, “Craft beer is the fastest growing industry in Georgia. Today, there are 34 breweries and brewpubs. We expect 14 new breweries to open this year.” Budd is a board member of the non-profit organization, Georgia Craft Brewers Guild (GCBG), which was founded in 2010. The GCBG supports the craft brewers, informs consumers and encourages growth from up and coming craft beer-based businesses in Georgia. “We have mentored 19 new breweries in 18 months and this is one way, we give back to our community who continue to support our local small brewers,” Budd said.

A tribute to their once high paying jobs, Iverson said, “If you come in with a tie, you will get $1 off the $10 admission fee.” The donations go to a charity called Ties That Matter that sends the ties to Haitian women who recycle them into bags, dolls and purses. “The non-profit, Ties That Matter has created 25-30 jobs for these women,” said Iverson. Cadence, a Belgian style ale was one of their first beers that won a Blue Ribbon in its category in the Peach State Brew Off 2010 competition.
