It’s 1929. Businesses both large and small are tanking in every direction, and the contractor you hired to build your home just went bankrupt in the middle of the process. What’s a woman to do? She could obtain her real estate broker license and manage to sell her home for a profit during the roughest economic downturn of the nation… and that’s precisely what Mrs. Emmaline Norman did.

But the roots of Miss Emmie’s determination to defy the norm were planted long before the birth of her real estate career.

As she found a way to complete the building of her home and get it sold despite a series of disappointments, Miss Emmie (as she was known to her friends and close associates) had no idea she was at the cusp of achieving something far greater than a home sale. During this process, Miss Emmie realized there was a major piece missing from the real estate industry. She felt that a business which involved something as substantial as investing in one’s home needed a feminine touch. Seemingly undeterred by a male-dominated industry, Miss Emmie became Georgia’s first female broker, sold her home herself with the help of another female real estate agent, formed Mrs. Harry Norman & Associates (now Harry Miss Emaline Norman, founder of Harry Norman, REALTORS® Norman, REALTORS®) in 1930, and soon after opened the Harry Norman Jr., Miss Emmie’s son, once reflected in firm’s first office at 77 West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta. an interview on his mother’s unorthodox yet clever and innovative methods to generate leads in a highly comIt was clear that Miss Emmie had no intention of being petitive market. derailed by setbacks or shying away from daunting odds. “On Sunday afternoons, I’d sit in the yard across the street from one of her open houses with a book in my hands, ostensibly studying. But actually I was recording

She had been trying since the age of 18 to become a career girl, despite her father’s wealth. Her plan was to go to work as soon as she got out of college, but those plans were slightly disrupted when around age 20, she met Mr. Harry Norman, Sr. whom she married and started a family with, naturally leading her to the role of a housewife. But as Miss Emmie once explained, sole devotion to domestic duties was never her heart’s desire. “I learned to cook in my youth, but I tried to forget all I knew about it and succeeded quite well,” she conveyed in a 1960 interview. After starting her company, Miss Emmie discovered her true passion was to provide a superior real estate experience for clients. She came to be known as the undisputed queen of Atlanta’s real estate operatives and “a woman beloved by thousands who know her not as a business woman but as a gracious hostess, a good neighbor and loyal citizen of her community.”


She was also known as a diligent worker. With the exception of taking a few annual vacations, Miss Emmie reported to her desk every day at 9 o’clock. Her original associates were known as gracious ladies who she required to wear a hat and white gloves when showing listings. Initially running her business out of her home, Miss Emmie would hold their sales meetings in her dining room, a place which holds a lasting memory for Rick Brinkman (former Senior VP & Owner).

Though Miss Emmie kept a “no-nonsense” profile, she wasn’t too rigid to recognize the need for levity. “There’s plenty of work to do and work is fun if you work easily and pleasantly. Some people work themselves into ill health, but it’s not the work that hurts them. It’s the annoying things that get into business unless one keeps them out by trying to be light-hearted and treating everybody as you want to be treated,” she explained.

“I was a young boy and I remember running through the dining room at Miss Emmie’s. She grabbed my arm and said, ‘Young man, young boys should be seen and not heard,’ he recalls. “She scared the fire out of me,” he added.

That positive outlook, along with her fearlessness in breaking barriers and years of relentless determination have led that little company she started over 85 years ago to become one of Atlanta’s most successful brokerages.

But Rick explains that he grew to see Miss Emmie for the strong leader she was. “She knew what she wanted and what she wanted you to represent,” he says. “Her brand was a wonderful brand, and I’m happy my family and I were able to be a part of it.”

Today, the firm has 13 sales offices, three franchise offices, over 100 employees and more than 900 agents. And 2015 closed with a total sales volume of over $3.25 billion dollars, following the company’s typical pattern of increase year after year.

When thinking of a garden, one is likely to have a vision of a pastoral scene without much activity. However, Atlanta Botanical Garden has taken the simple existence of plants and created an experience both engaging and eye-opening. One might conclude that they have taken botany, the study of plants, to a new level.

a new restaurant, expanding one of our buildings so we have room for staff and building new gardens in the woods and a new really beautiful skyline garden that will open in the spring of next year. We’re making big changes here with those investments so a bit of a challenge is finishing that.

Whether just visiting, attending a social event, or enjoying a concert, Garden guests are treated to a variety of spectacular exhibits, delicious food, and of course an amazing variety of plants.

We opened a new garden in Gainesville almost a year ago. Bringing that garden up and continuing to grow it and connect to the community is challenging, but it’s also an opportunity.”

We sat down with Atlanta Botanical Garden President & CEO Mary Pat Matheson to better understand what it’s like to run the organization and what guests can expect in the coming months.

What’s your favorite part of being able to lead this organization?

What would you say is the most popular feature of the Garden? “One of the most popular features is our orchid center. It’s the largest orchid center in the United States, and we do a big orchid show from early February to mid-April every year. They’re the largest group of flowering plants in the world and they’re a really beautiful part of what we do and what we offer. Another popular feature is our edible garden and the Earth Goddess (a 25-foot-tall representation of a goddess emerging from the earth).” What are some of the challenges the organization faces?

“Anyone who runs a non-profit in the state of Georgia is always looking for money. We wouldn’t do what we do without the great philanthropy of the people of Atlanta. Everything you see has been built with private dollars. It’s amazing. We’re in a capital campaign right now and we’re renovating the children’s garden and opening

“I love building gardens. It is so amazing to transform the landscaping into something beautiful while respecting what’s already there. By the end of this year we will have raised well over $110 million to put into beautiful new gardens and facilities to serve this community. I love that - finding someone who wants to make that investment and gaining their trust to know that what we’re going to build is something they will also be proud of, and that is part of their legacy as well as the garden’s legacy. That’s magic.” “I think it’s so important to connect to children. When I watch them romp through this garden and enjoy the children’s garden and the edible garden, it’s transformative. We opened our summer camps registration this morning at 9:00. It sold out at 10:00 a.m. And I’m talking camps all summer long. So that tells you how important it is to have something like this for the children in our community. I love the people and connecting them to plants. That’s really an amazing experience for me. We have some big problems, and we need our kids to solve them. We need to connect them to nature. That’s our job.”


What can we expect to see this spring? “There are three really big things coming this year.
