Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Harry Wyatt (Year 2) 2017/18 12.02.18 - 10.08.18 (6 months) Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners is a world renowned architectural practise based at the Leadenhall Building in the City of London. The practise is lead by Richard Rogers, whose buildings include Lloyd’s of London, the Pompidou centre and One Hyde Park. Following a seven week placement last summer, I had the opportunity to rejoin the same team to work on both off-site manufactured and traditional build residential projects. During this placement I have gained experience in residential design, BIM, planning and modular construction.

HomeShell HomeShell is an off-site volumetric modular construction system, a joint venture between RSHP and Aecom, developed over the past 15 years. The system is designed to be high performance, surpassing quality of traditional mass housing, yet remain affordable. I have had the opportunity to work on a range of HomeShell developments and develop a valuable skill set in residential and modular design. My roles on these projects have included development of layouts for a variety of unit types, writing and illustrating for design and access statements and drafting and modelling from capacity studies to planning applications. During my placement HomeShell was making the transition into BIM, which allowed me to learn Revit and also be involved in the creation of the modular library - a kit of parts which will be common to future projects. I have also had the opportunity to engage with the Aecom team, who are involved with the engineering and ultimately fabrication of the modules, and visit a prototype module currently being built. Due to the confidential nature of the work there is a limit to what I can show, though I have included below two social housing schemes in Lewisham I worked on, currently in planning.

Hammersmith The West King Street redevelopment in Hammersmith will transform the existing town hall into a unified civic hub, shown in the visualisation above. The surrounding land will be developed for primarily residential use, with 50% of the units being affordable - either through shared ownership of social rent. I worked with the residential wing of the team in the run-up to planning. My tasks included developing wheelchair accessible layouts for units following a meeting with an access consultant, updating general arrangement drawings from a previous design freeze and producing new section drawings. I also worked through the set of GA sections and elevations to ensure graphic consistency and quality and prepared them for presentation with shadows, planting and people. This project was on a much larger scale than the HomeShell ones and with that came new challenges of coordinating work with a larger team. However I was kept very busy and felt like a useful and valued member.
