I am studying the M.Arch - Masters in Architecture specilisation in Design for Manufacture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London. Previously, I was part of the online MACAD - Masters in Advanced Computation in Architecture and Design masters programme from IAAC, Spain with an accomplished module that focused on ‘emerging crafts’ - involved design studios based 䄀刀䌀䠀䤀吀䔀䌀吀唀刀䄀䰀 䐀䔀匀䤀䜀一䔀刀 on computational techniques optimised structurally and performative design.

PROGRESSIVE CRAFTS VERTICAL WINERY PROTOTYPE

The 7 steps of winemaking (vineyard, harvest, fermentation, ageing in bottle, coupage, ageing in barrels and logistics) and its 8th, the tasting, form the vertical back bone of a structural and functional productive machine that makes wine over time as an architectural metabolic apparatus.

With a reverse drawing approach, at the intersection of science, design and architecture, the project was developed integrating numerous needs, some spatial, other infrastructural, biological, material, structural, to develop the building until its potential construction.

Structure / planning

1. Bottom-up view of the overall structure

By studying different design iterations, we optimized a homogeneous three-dimensional grid system composed of standard profiles joined mainly by pinned joints. It makes a lightweight and transparent composition that is at the same time strong enough to support loads up to 1.000kg/m2

The whole design process pursued an aggregation system that is easy to assemble without welding on site. Thus, all the structure will be assembled by screws with only two types of joints.

After eight years of thorough research in viticulture, enology and architectural design, we propose an innovative project in the field of food and beverage production: ‘The Vertical Winery’. From the eight momenta of winemaking and wine tasting, a distributed network relates Architecture and Enology in a new vertical diagram by the force of gravity.

1. Vineyard Growth Pattern

Starting with the study of the conditions, dimensions and rhythm, necessary for the ideal growth of a vineyard, we have designed different iterations that, without altering these conditions, allow us to compose a melody that expresses vertical dematerialization. 1. Form responding to environment

The proposal includes addressing the challenges of designing a building in the cold as well as harsh summer climate of Moscow protecting from direct sunlight and glare by timber screens that can be operated as per need. The proposal resolves two research questions – How can climatic design influence the form finding strategy for the optimized design? How to tackle harsh sun as well as high winds in the Moscow region?

As per daylight studies, light wells were required in the centre – an atrium was hence created. Concluding from our Climatic Analysis that Wind is a huge issue in Moscow, we decided to wrap our building in a skin of structural timber. Creating a Public plaza on the Ground and the Lower Level. After mapping the Pedestrian Movement around our site and thermal comfort of the users using CFD, a recessed plaza was developed on the ground level.

3. Proposed Design

It is observed that beam elements work harder than the shell elements in transferring loads. It is a very heterogeneous system and the nodal displacements are not in the permissible limits.

It is crucial to how each stability system work with respect to each other in load transfer and how geometric & material variations inform the overall optimisation of the structure. Since it is a public space, the intent was to make the floors lightweight and a continuous shell, thereby making the vertical cores/light wells and the facade the major structural system.

The structure became lightweight and the mass of the structure reduced by 65%. The displacements are within the permissible limits. The beams work better and transfer forces. This reduces the load on the shell elements.

The building is designed as the new agora, the multilevel gathering space, with multiple social functions stacked vertically. the lower level is the recessed and sheltered semi-outdoor space. it is open from all sides and not artificially heated or cooled but the projection of the building’s skirt canopy protects it from the elements and creates a more comfortable microclimate. The elevation involves juxtaposition of solids and voids with geometric studies of windows and louvers, thereby developing joinery details. The project investigates wood systems constructed through accumulative local weakening and disruption of fibre continuity (kerfing).
