Wetlands
After more than a two-year hiatus, HRI was excited to restart our summer Wetlands Workshop series with the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Learning Center! Every Saturday from May through October, HRI research groups including the CSSC, the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Lab, among others, helped all ages get hands-on with science and learn more about the diverse ecosystems, and ecosystem services, of the Gulf of Mexico. The return of this series was a successregistration for each 2022 Wetlands Workshop was full with a waitlist. This series will continue in May 2023.
AS ENDOWED CHAIR FOR MARINE POLICY AND LAW
Named Hri Chair For Community Resilience
In October, Dr. Katya Wowk was named the HRI Chair for Community Resilience. Dr. Wowk, along with her team, works toward building and strengthening local and regional partnerships that collaborate to mitigate the effects of disasters in the Coastal Bend, and throughout the Gulf region. From inland to shore-facing communities of Gulf coastal watersheds, the Community Resilience group focuses on a transdisciplinary approach to strengthen community resilience, which is defined as the ability of a system (socio-cultural, economic, environmental, infrastructure, and governance) to absorb and bounce-forward from adverse shocks and stressors. The Community Resilience group is joined by their partners at the Coastal Bend Council of Governments, bringing together science and practitioner knowledge needed for holistic resilience.
