HART is pleased to announce an 2024 Open Call for artists, creators, and researchers based in Hong Kong to apply for our studio space at HART Haus. Located in Kennedy Town, HART’s studio space provides easy access to art spaces and events around Hong Kong Island. Artists and cultural practitioners of diverse backgrounds and disciplines are welcome to focus on the research, creative inquiry, or experimentation of their creative projects. Apart from providing an affordable space for artistic creation, HART also provides artists with opportunities to share their creative progress or outcome through Open Studios and public programmes to encourage exchanges and collaborations. Over the years, HART’s Studio has supported over 60 artists, cultural scholars, and experts from various creative industries who have continued to excel in their careers. About HART Studio At HART, we see the importance of hands-on making, collaboration and knowledge sharing to pave for a stronger and more sustainable local arts and cultural ecosystem in Hong Kong. HART Studio is the arts and creative incubator program at HART Haus, a space and platform for Hong Kong talents to create, experiment and evolve their art practices in a social setting. Participating HART Studio Artists, creative talents, or ‘Hausians’, are invited to join through our ‘open call’, and are provided with studio space, resources for collaboration, and opportunities to integrate their practice with the larger community. Our program tradition Showcase provides HART Studio Artists the unique experience to present new work of art within their place of work to the public, celebrating diversity and quality of work.

The open-air terrace invites nature for your creations. With open-air terraces and refreshing greens to spark creativity, come imagine and work to build a space for your growth. With HART Studio Artists’* collective input, we relish a remarkable ride in art making with you. Studio facilities include: Facilities and Support ● 24-hour access to a secured shared studio nearby to Kennedy Town MTR Station ● A hall area for events and showcases ● A pantry with communal areas ● Basic equipment, tools, and printing service ● Basic utilities including electricity, wifi, water supply, cleaning, and maintenance ● Barrier-free facility including 2 cargo lifts ● Onsite operations and administration support from studio assistant ● Documentation and online presences on HART’s website and social media platforms

It includes offerings of studio grants*, regular advice and support, learning courses, partnership and collaborative opportunities. We also encourage self-initiated events and proposals. *Rates vary due to the varying needs of space, facilities, HART team support, time and duration of occupancy, way of studio usage; and are highly relevant to the applicants’ commitments, vision, capabilities, ambition, and contribution.


Eligibility, Selection Criteria and Commitments ELIGIBILITY (a) Talents who are contributing, or about to enter, or exploring to work with talents belong to the creative industries in Hong Kong - hereafter referred to as ‘the field’; (b) Any individuals regarded as having potential, talent, and/or entrepreneurial spirit by HART team; and (c) Talents currently living and based in Hong Kong - or frequently working in the city.

SELECTION CRITERIA Five core criteria for ALL HART Studio Artists are: 1. Committed in creating and practising art OR engaged in creativity-/ innovation-related businesses, with a strong portfolio to demonstrate own calibre; 2. Demonstrate frequent use of studio space at HART Haus; 3. Demonstrate strong commitment to community building and activities at HART Haus; 4. Lead as examples and role models to excite, inspire and engage HART Studio Artists and members to make impactful collaboration and/or program; and 5. Adhere to HART Haus House Rules regarding all studio use.


Studio Grant We offer Studio Grants to young talents who demonstrate potential to become our YOUNG HART Studio Artists: ☐ Graduated from recognised institutions within 5 years ☐ Provide at least 1 recommendation by local institutions or galleries or professional practitioners in the art industry ☐ With high potentials who will be likely to: ○ be represented by a local Hong Kong or International gallery; or ○ be invited to produce group or solo exhibition locally or internationally; or ○ be working with independent art dealers, curators, managers or professional practitioners for businesses or projects; or ○ contribute to the local Hong Kong art scene, such as initiating a group show for the peers, initiated a collective or artist-run program/ project/ initiative ☐ Demonstrate ambition and determination to pursue/ further career in the arts or creative industries (i.e. HART team regard as having great potential) ☐ Possess entrepreneurial spirit (Remark #1)

Commitments of all Grant recipients as follows: Support HART programme and activities proactively ✓ Demonstrate willingness to contribute to the corporate and community projects by ✓ collaborating with HART Should be the ambassador representing HART, and support HART to gain exposure as a ✓ collective

Remark #1 Entrepreneurial spirit means the talent has the ambition and determination to self-learnt/ equip - and successfully applied his/her - knowledge, skills and experiences in making the creative business/ enterprises work. ‘Working’, in this context of applying to HART as an Anchor HART Studio Artist, him or her has to have both the courage to fail (learn from trial and error) and the practicality in realising deliverables working with our corporate or with the partners/ collaborators that we introduced to the HART Studio Artist. Besides monetary return and benefits that we target, we also look for those who can contribute to the running of a sustainable ecosystem for the art and cultural industries, meaning that if the HART Studio Artist could work out high quality education or community outreach programme with HART, we may consider inviting such HART Studio Artist to join HART Studio for free (i.e. rental completely waived) - because, we value independence, problem-solving skills and motivation highly, and these qualities are what an entrepreneur should have.


Application Procedures and Timeline All applicants are required to: 1. Read this guideline to learn about HART Studio 2. Complete the online application form 3. We recommend at least one visit to HART Haus 4. Candidates may require to attend interviews with HART team in person during the selection process

Upon successful application, you will need to: 1. Complete a payment (monthly fee and one month deposit) within 5 business days 2. Confirmation by countersigning Rental Agreement and the listed House Rules 3. Provide a photocopy of a valid HKID card, passport and/or business registration (BR) certificate 4. Attend an orientation session led by our administrator/ manager on site at HART Haus before officially using the studio

Additional information needed from Studio Grant applicants: ☐ Reference letter from your referee ☐ Documentation(s) of previous projects ☐ Any other document(s) which can support the grant application ☐ Proposals to initiate or recommend potential collaboration to HART (even referrals - if any)

Similar criteria apply to Guest HART Studio Artists - HART invites them to contribute to HART Studio by making collaboration with HART Studio Artists, or to launch educational and community programmes. Meanwhile HART accepts high quality proposals for those who are interested in becoming our Guest HART Studio Artists, we will be very selective and consider these applications on a case-by-case basis.
