THEN & NOW From its early beginnings as a fishing port, through to the rise and fall of heavy industry, Hartlepool has emerged as a thriving energetic town with a growing economy and plenty to offer. Steeped in history and heritage, Hartlepool is famed for an array of notable events and figures, including its 7th century Abbess, St. Hilda; the raid of the Scots in the 14th century and its bombardment in the First World War to name but a few.
Hartlepool’s history is still evident in the town today, with the fascinating Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience, home to the oldest British warship afloat in the world, HMS Trincomalee and the Museum of Hartlepool, which chronicles the town’s past. Recent years have seen a major shift in the Hartlepool economy from a dependency on traditional heavy industries such as shipbuilding and manufacturing to sectors such as retail, high value engineering, process industries and renewable energy.
WHERE WE ARE When it comes to contrasts, old and new, coast and countryside, modern and traditional, Hartlepool has the perfect blend. Hartlepool’s historic Headland, formed on a peninsular that reaches into the North Sea, is a proud community and home to the oldest architecture in Hartlepool. Whilst a few miles away, Seaton Carew can boast some of the widest, golden beaches on the East Coast with a splendid promenade connecting to Hartlepool Marina.
The modernising of the historic docks to a 500 berth modern Marina is the jewel in the crown for Hartlepool, offering a mix of continental restaurants, waterside apartments, business centres, entertainment venues and exhilarating water-sports. The Marina and modern day town centre also provide retail therapy at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre and the Marina retail parks.

The picturesque villages of Elwick, Greatham, Dalton Piercy and Hart Village offer a reminder of traditional village life and welcoming countryside. Hartlepool offers a wide range of choice and quality when it come to places to spend your leisure time. The marina is home to a wealth of quality restaurants offering tastes from around the globe, perfectly complemented by a mix of pubs and bars to complete the occasion. Your shopping needs are also catered by the well-served Middleton Grange Shopping Centre as well as a variety of retail parks and supermarket options. For entertainment lovers the town boasts a wonderful theatre with an exciting programme that aims to inspire and delight. Live music and comedy clubs are also very popular. The monthly Hot Potato Comedy Club is always a sell-out and the atmospheric live music venue, The Studio, is developing a great calendar of events.
INVEST Regeneration is at the heart of Hartlepool’s approach in delivering real benefits for Hartlepool through supporting economic growth, securing investment and making the town a modern and attractive location. The last 10 years have seen massive investment, spectacular projects have revitalised run-down areas of the town, while careful and sympathetic redevelopment has ensured that Hartlepool’s rich heritage will be maintained for generations to come.
The town has witnessed major public and private sector investment over recent years to improve its business infrastructure and provide the right accommodation and environment for a variety of businesses.

LIVING IN HARTLEPOOL An excellent range of schooling and further education opportunities are available, including a magnificent ÂŁ50m state of the art building for Hartlepool College of Further Education. Cleveland College of Art and Design has recently expanded their presence in Hartlepool into two key town-centre properties Hartlepool Sixth Form College is one of just over a hundred specialist sixth form colleges around the country. All are supported by a range of universities across the North East. All the facilities and amenities can be found within Hartlepool to enhance a living experience in the town, including leisure facilities, picturesque villages, parks & open spaces, golf, retail, nightlife, attractions and an excellent choice of eating out locations.
In recent years, Hartlepool has experienced substantial investment in housing regeneration and improvements to the housing offer, which has encouraged people to want to live and work in the area. Large executive homes at Wynyard, grand Edwardian and Victorian houses in the exclusive Park and West Park area, family homes in the newly developed estates such as Middle Warren and Bishop Cuthbert as well as picturesque homes in the quiet villages surrounding the town, are all supported by a phased replacement of old houses with contemporary, affordable new homes.
HARTLEPOOL THE LOCATION Hartlepool is served by excellent transport links, connecting the town to the rest of the UK and Europe. The excellence of the North’s fast road network is enhanced by the lack of major traffic congestion, allowing quick and stress free travel. The A689 links both the A19 and A1(M) to provide easy access to and from all routes. Durham and Tees Valley and Newcastle International Airports are within easy reach and a fast, regular service runs between the North East and London. Hartlepool is also one of six North East stations served by the new rail service directly connecting the region to London Kings Cross. Hartlepool makes up part of Teesport, one of the busiest ports in the whole of the UK. For those wanting to travel by sea there is a regular ferry service to Europe operating from North Shields just 30 miles to the north.
