Introduction & background The Young Cultural Ambassadors scheme has been developed to help engage young people with arts and cultural opportunities in Hartlepool.

We would like children & young people to share and promote opportunities amongst their friends and family. The YCA project is a self led project within schools and we aim to keep regular contact with YCA’s and their progress via emailed updates and occasional meetings. We would like to be informed about outcomes from activities in the toolkit, and we hope they will give us a good idea of what young people really want from cultural venues in the town!

We want to start a dialogue with young people to find out their views. We want young people to view places like the Gallery, Museum, Theatre and Library as welcoming places for children and young people to visit. We hope to learn from the feedback we receive and use it to develop a more engaging cultural offer for children and young people.

Young Cultural Ambassadors Primary School Toolkit- Be involved! Lucian Freud Logan Hicks

Artist profiles Logan Hicks

Lucian Freud

Logan Hicks is an American stencil artist, currently living and working in New York, in the hub of America's urban art scene. His hand-cut stencil process involves cutting a separate stencil for each colour, then layering each colour upon the next until the final piece emerges, often hundreds of hours later, as a “virtuoso” piece of stencil art which is to say it is of outstanding technical achievement.

Lucian Michael Freud, 8 December 1922 - 20 July 2011) was a German-born British painter. Known chiefly for his thickly impastoed portrait and figure paintings, he was widely considered the pre-eminent British artist of his time.

Originally a screen printer, Logan sold off his equipment to finance his migration from the East Coast to the West Coast, turning to stencilling to re-invigorate his printing. Since then he has become renowned as one of the most meticulous stencil artists working today.

Impasto is a technique used in painting and it means where paint is layered very thickly. It comes from an Italian word meaning “dough” or “mixture”

Spearhead

Called the 3 Brothers Grant this is a traditional fishing vessel called a coble. The boat was designed to deal with the harsh and stormy weather of the North East coast.

This pot was an everyday object and would have been used to store and pour liquids. It could have held wine or ale.

A bronze military spear. This is a weapon that was used for hunting in Prehistoric Britain. At that time Britain was home to wild boars, bears, beavers and wolves which were hunted with spears for the food and clothing they could provide.

Gold Ring with garnet This ring dates from the 1300’s and was found at Hart Manor. Wearing this piece of jewellery would have signified wealth.

Bombardment Clock Merman Mermen, and mermaids, became popular as tourist souvenirs in the late 1800s. Our Merman (affectionately known as Herman), was hand made from the body of monkey, a wooden core, and the tail end of a fish. These particular types of mermen are known as 'Feejee Mermaids' and were often collected by wealthy people who would collect strange objects to exhibit them in a “cabinet of curiosities”

This metal alarm clock was damaged during the bombardment of Hartlepool by three German warships on December 16th 1914. The 40 minute attack killed 112 people and injured many, many more. The clock shows that the attack happened at 08.10am when many people were going about their morning. A piece of shrapnel is embedded in the clock face.

Face to Face: Portraits What is a portrait? It is a work which has been consciously posed by a person or a group. It can be a painting, a drawing, a collage, a sculpture or a photograph. They can be made for many reasons. Many of these portraits have been done to commemorate someone’s working life, like being in the army.

Reading a portrait There are lots of things to look at in a portrait how someone is sitting, what they are wearing and where they are having their picture painted. This can make the difference in whether a portrait is formal or informal.

Pose How are they sitting and where are their hands? Do they look relaxed or do they look as though they are posing. In official portraits, people are usually in a fixed position usually in accordance with the importance of their work

Facial expression is important. It is rare to see someone smiling in a Victorian portrait for instance.

Clothing When a portrait is something to do with someone’s work or position they will often be wearing clothing associated with that. Personal portraits tell us about the person through the choices of clothes they have made.

Background Many of the portraits here have nothing in the background, but sometimes they can leave clues about the people. Sometimes there are objects from their home or things from their work

Can you try to read a portrait? Look at the examples on the next page...
