FRIDAY 20TH JULY – SUNDAY 22ND JULY THE WATERFRONT, THE HIGHLIGHT, TS24 OYA FREE ADMISSION
FRIDAY FILM FEST After bringing two watery classics to Hartlepool Waterfront Festival in 2017, we’ve decided to dedicate a full evening to films! The Friday Film Fest will be open from 5pm.
Hartlepool Waterfront Festival is back and we’re excited to delve into this year’s theme ‘Oh, I Do Like To Be’. Our arts festival is a celebration of everything this statement conjures in your mind – whether it’s the smell of fish and chips, the sound of seagulls, black-and-white photographs of Seaton Carew beach huts or the good old British weather.
We hope you enjoy what we’ve put together and we look forward to starting our cultural journey with you, from the beaches and out into the ocean. As a borough and a region, one of our best features is our proximity to the ocean and we can’t wait to celebrate it through art.
Here’s how the line-up looks Finding Nemo (2003) Boy & Bicycle (1965) The Goonies (1985) Visitors are reminded to arrive early to avoid disappointment, as the capacity may be capped for safety reasons. Don’t forget to bring
seating and a warm coat in case the weather takes a good old British turn for the worse! Food will not be provided on-site, so we’d encourage paying a visit to local businesses to make your own picnic. But remember – no glass will be allowed on-site!
MAINMAST STAGE Miss Toni’s Academy Sat - 12pm One of Hartlepool’s best performing arts schools, Miss Toni will once again bring her group to entertain and dazzle us with the best pop-choir in the area.
Channy Thompson Sat - 1.30pm & Sun - 2pm There aren't a lot of North East pop stars who can say their career has been as successful as Channy's and she's back to perform for one of her most loyal fan-bases, Tees Valley. Sparkle Sun - 1.30pm Fresh from supporting X Factor's Sam Lavery, Teesside's best girl group bring the party back to #partypool. As students of Miss Toni's Academy, the four have developed a unique sound that has represented Hartlepool to the highest standard for nearly five years. Page 2

MAINMAST STAGE Eve Conway Sat - 2.45pm
Eve Conway is an urban, alt-pop solo artist from Darlington, whose massive voice and gritty brand of music captures the bare essence of folk, R'n'B, gospel and presents it in a fresh and exciting way. Her raw and soulful songs reflect on the darker side of the human condition, delighting the ears, yet unsettling the mind. Spine-tingling delivery combined with a lo-fi charm make Eve a captivating live performer, engaging crowds with her warm and savage vocal tones that soar above expansive layers of sound courtesy of her battered guitar and loop/sample pedal.
North Road Sat - 3.30pm & Sun 3pm After a storming set at 2017's Hartlepool Fireworks, the three lads from Durham are back for an extended set at the Waterfront. Get ready for outstanding renditions of indie anthems, as well as some of the old classics thrown in for good measure.
Page 4
Club Groovy Sun - 12.30pm We'll kick Sunday off with a beach-themed Club Groovy, with Urban Kaos bringing their signature party for mini groovers and their adults!
FIKA Sat - 12.30pm FIKA are a new North East two-piece combining voices, guitar, ukulele and some talented pals. They've a strong commitment to fancy harmonies and lyrics that give you the ‘feels’, so get ready for FIKA to serve up some Kate Bush, Bob Dylan and Prefab Sprout.
MAINMAST STAGE
Talent Show (FKA James Leonard Hewitson) Sat - 2pm James is one of the driving forces behind Hartlepool's 'Town Hall Live' at the Town Hall Theatre and has a set-list full of strong indie anthems. If you haven't already heard his instant classic 'Shy of Hard Work', then check it out on Spotify. His music is a favourite with TV producers and has been featured on Made in Chelsea and Tattoo Fixers.
Samantha Durnan Sun - 2.30pm Samantha has performed to music fans around the globe and has amassed a strong following for her Stevie Nicks inspired tunes. Her latest single Satellite, was released just a few months ago and is already a favourite, while her three-voice cover of Gimme Gimme Gimme by Abba has even reached over 17k views online!
The Lake Poets Sat - 4.15pm If you haven’t heard of The Lake Poets, you’re in for a treat. Local lad Marty is bringing his full band to end the first day of the Mainmast stage at the Waterfront Festival and we’re excited to see what he has in store. His music is pure, honest, and ethereal and is emphatically Northern. The Lake Poets celebrate where we’re from and tell stories set in shipyards and on fish quays, as well as good old-fashioned love songs set in Northern towns. Page 5
MAINMAST STAGE
Headlining the festival... Lost Voice Guy Sun - 3.45pm Stop the press! A late addition to our programme, we’ve got icon, star and (relatively) local Lost Voice Guy fresh from his win on this year’s Britain’s Got Talent!
Tom Mouse Smith Sat - 5pm Teen sensation Tom Mouse Smith has made quite the impact on the North East music scene. After turning down an offer to appear on Britain’s Got Talent, Tom’s rise to notoriety has increased each day since, including the chance to support James Bay at Tynemouth Priory. If you’re not already familiar with Tom’s work, which encompasses covers of classics such as ‘House of the Rising Sun’, then check his work out on YouTube. Tom’s set promises to be storming! Page 6
JIB MARKET The Jib Market is our pop-up party market that will play host to some of the finest street food sellers, musicians, performers and entertainers in the North East. Whether you're looking for a close-encounter with a performance poet or a dirty burger with loaded fries, a choral rendition of a Beyonce classic or a three person drag extravaganza, we've got you covered. The Jib Market is the hippest place to be for two days only! Bonnie and The Bonettes Category is Stars,Statements and Legends. If you're not familiar with the North's own Bonnie Love and her fabulous Bonettes, then close your eyes and think of divas, glitter and neon wigs. Bonnie and The Bonettes are ready to host the Jib Market stage and make sure that you're smiling. No exceptions. Or else. We're honoured to welcome the gang as our hosts before they bring their legendary theatre show 'Drag Me to Love' to the Town Hall Theatre in October. Drag optional, glitter essential.
Tees Women Poets Sat - 12.30pm A collective of women performance poets established by national spoken word organisation Apples and Snakes, which runs regular writing and rehearsal clubs and performs across the region.

After their successful turn at the Waterfront Festival last year, we're sure that there'll be something for everyone. Folk Hour is coming! Sarah Crutwell Sat - 2pm Sarah is a spoken word poet based in the Tees Valley and her aim is to address 'the things we lower our voices to talk about', often tackling issues such as mental health, loneliness, politics, sexism and women's rights. If you haven't already witnessed Sarah's power, get ready to be moved.
Carl James Dunning Sat - 3.30pm The Redcar music scene is a hotbed of talent and Carl is one of its strongest performers. Join him for acoustic folk music with quietly powerful self-penned songs written in the Tees Valley. Ladies of Midnight Blue Sat - 4.15pm Closing the Jib Market Stage on Saturday, we've invited Ladies of Midnight Blue to end the party as they bring Afro-Latin percussion and brass duet to the Jib Market. Think club-like drum rhythms, and powerful and upbeat melodies that inspire dancing and audience participation.

Three caravans – each one a specially created performance space designed to capture a different part of an experience shared across the nation – the British seaside. Three unique shows created from interviews with the people of the Black Country and Skegness. Together, they explore the glitz, the grot, and fish & chips; the sea, the sand and the seagulls; the wind, the waves and the fairground rides that make our holiday experience. But what’s it like to live there all year round?
Fishy Tales Sat & Sun - Various Times A caravan brimming with stories of encounters with sea creatures, long forgotten seaside myths and buried family stories that are more difficult to tell.

Dark Water Sat & Sun - Various Times Enter a dark and intimate space, take your place at the sea’s edge and stare into the oily black water, following the light that searches the sea. Here we meet a member of the lifeboat crew, a true local hero recalling stories - both funny and tragic - of the lives saved and those unfortunately lost at sea.
Giant Seagulls – Surreal McCoy Sat & Sun – 12.15pm, 1.45pm & 4pm These cheeky sea birds have had audiences in a flap all over the world. Giant gulls with working beaks, they’ll rummage in bags and pockets, steal food from plates and picnic baskets, squabble amongst themselves and generally cause a fuss. The company spent many happy hours studying the behaviour of real seagulls before applying what they had learnt to this walkabout. From the calls to the fights, the attention to detail is constantly surprising.
Sol Cinema Sat & Sun - Most of the day! The smallest cinema in the Solar System is visiting Hartlepool this summer! Roll up, roll up - get in line and prepare to experience the only solar-powered cinema show this side of Yorkshire! The Crowhouse – Circo Rum Ba Ba Sun - 12pm & 2pm A derelict house appears in the middle of the street. The windows are shattered and a keep out sign bars the front door. A furious bird has taken up residency in the chimney and squawks territorially when anyone comes near the house. One by one three very different characters arrive through the audience and try to take over the house. A battle of wills and skills ensues with ducking and diving, wheeling and dealing and ingenious plans evolving as each person tries to gain a room inside. Little by little in a choreographed frenzy of acrobatics, silks trapeze, hat juggling and slap stick they begin to accept each other and work to create a home, together, within the battered house. The only remaining problem ... the furious bird in the chimney. Page 12
All at Sea - Acrojou Sat - 1.30pm & 3.15pm Sun - 1.15pm & 3.15pm A storm in a tea cup, the cloud that we all carry, a boat-sized piece of one man’s inner ocean... All at Sea is set in a boat which rows gently through the tides of the world around us. In limbo between life and death, a lone boatman traverses a vast ocean of memories and past hopes, accompanied by his own personal storm. All at Sea combines melancholic humour, striking design, and the visual poetry for which Acrojou is recognised, in a moving and atmospheric row-about installation.
Blazing Saddles – The Bicycle Ballet Co Sat - 12.15pm & 2.45pm Sun - 12.45pm & 2.45pm Blazing Saddles is a visually stunning & joyful, roving, outdoor dance performance celebrating women, cycling, fashion and a wry look at pink, evolving cultural taboos, modern women and bikes. The show celebrates a step change moment for women in the 1890s, when bicycles first became widely available and women embraced the freedom, independence and economy they offered, transforming their clothing to be able to ride. Page 13
QUARTERDECK Bellevue Hotel – Bash Street Theatre Sat & Sun - 3.30pm Closing the programme, Bash Street Theatre bring their hilarious family show ‘Bellevue Hotel’ to Hartlepool Waterfront. Set in a theatrical boarding house in the 1950s, it tells the story of landlady Elsie Lovejoy and her capers with the gangster boss of the neighbouring sweet factory who is determined to buy her out. With live music and silent comedy, Bash Street are masters in the art of outdoor performance and Bellevue is an unmissable opportunity to see one of their best works. Fun for all the family!
Oh, I Do Like To Be Sat & Sun - 12pm – 5pm As part of the Great Place Tees Valley programme, Hartlepool Borough Council has commissioned two artists to work alongside the community to produce artworks in response to two themes. Head down to the Waterfront on Saturday and Sunday to see these artworks exhibited. The first, by Bloomin Art, invited responses to our festival’s theme ‘Oh, I Do Like To Be’ on postcards by people across Hartlepool. Some of the postcards have been used to create a 3D piece of sculpture which will be displayed at Hartlepool Waterfront Festival. Following the festival, there will be an exhibition of some of the postcards, as well as the 3D sculpture in the Museum of Hartlepool from 4 August 2018. We have also commissioned Seaton Carew based artist Diane Watson, champion beachcomber and part of Navigator North, to produce new art works based on the theme of beach plastics alongside school groups and beach combing groups across the borough. Great Place Tees Valley is managed by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England.
Greater Tees Carnival SIRF Sat - 1pm As part of the Great Place Tees Valley programme, we are delighted to welcome Stockton International Riverside Festival (SIRF) to Hartlepool for a warm-up procession with community groups working in Hartlepool. The groups have worked with professional artists to develop costumes, music and performance as part of a huge site-wide procession. The theme this year is ‘Reach For The Stars’ and we can’t wait to see how this is interpreted by Team Hartlepool! If you’re not sure what to expect from the procession, think Carnival, think costume, think music, think dancing and think party!
Arts Beach Sat & Sun - 12pm – 5pm Building on the phenomenal success of 2017’s Art Garden, this year some of the region’s best working artists are coming together to deliver free drop-in workshops for young people and their adults. This year we are welcoming artists from across the country to help make, create and craft in our Arts Beach! In 2017, artists directly engaged with over 2,100 people and we’re hoping to double that in 2018! Page 14
