Open House offers English and Journalism

IDEA International School hosted an Open House for Hue City students to have fun at its campus and learn more English. The students interviewed one another and took photographs for a student-produced newspaper. More than 50 students from eight Hue primary schools came to the Open House on Monday, April 2. Guest speaker for the day was Mr. Jay Hartwell, a University of Hawaii journalism faculty who was visiting Hue. IDEA School Managing Director Nguyễn Bảo Quỳnh Nga came up with the Open House concept when Mr. Jay, a family friend, offered to teach a newspaper course to her students. “Working with younger students is exciting because they want to learn new things and improve their English,” said Mr. Jay, who was a reporter for 12 years before joining the University to advise its student newspaper. Ms. Nga said children in Hue rarely get opportunities to learn English while having fun with and meeting other students. “The Open House is also a chance for our students to share their international educational experience while making new friends,” said Ms. Nga. During the week Mr. Jay taught, students went on field trips to Thua Thien Hue newspaper and Joint Stock Printing Company and visited TRT television station.

IDEA International School students Nguyễn Ngọc Anh Thư, Nguyễn Nguyễn Nhật Hoàng, and Phan Nguyên Bảo Nhi are the host editors for students from Hue City schools, who came to an Open House that offered lessons in English and journalism taught by visiting faculty from Hawaii.
