KAUST PORTFOLIO
Creative Solutions to Address Climate Change
Social Media Campaign
Originally used for the 2018 COP24 Conference in Katowice, this video was used as part of a social media campaign for KAUST’s ongoing climate change awareness initiative. In this video I was challenged with creating impactful and emotional content as fast as possible without having to record any new footage, so I used a combination of old footage my team has previously recorded and stock footage found on Envato Elements. Then working in conjuction with KAUST’s Editorial team, a script had been developed and then I picked music to set the pathos of the film. My goal in this project was to do as little editing as possible as time was of the essence, and as such I opted not to use any animation. This decision has tranformed the video into something strong and bold, and this format became a standard template for future videos since.

I have been involved in creating a series of videos for KAUST’s publication: “KAUST Discovery.” On the online version of it, many science articles are accompanied by a video with a basic summation to tease the reader into viewing the article fully. In this collaboration, I have upgraded and changed the fomat and look of these videos multiple times with each publication period, providing a style guide for future editors to follow.
Enrichment Intros Motion Graphics
Seasonal Enrichments are a huge part of KAUST’s personality and a tradition the whole campus looks forward to. Every year, I’m tasked with creating an intro/ sting animation to precede livestreams and other Enrichment event videos that’s based on the original identity of this event designed by KAUST’s own graphic design department. The goal when making these stings is to bring that design to life in a way that reflects its ever-changing themes, as no two WEPs are the same and as such it’s impossible to create a hollistic template to include them all; which makes my job all the more exciting since I got my start in this industry with motion graphics.

Eco-Anxiety Social Media Campaign

This Campaign was created in the wake of the pandemic and the various climate disasters happening across the globe. I have been given creative freedom to direct the look and feel of this video without straying from the KAUST branding guidelines. I have gone with a teal background which is KAUST’s most common brand color (besides brown) and I used a blend of stock footage and clips we have previously shot on this topic to develop a high-impact emotional video to highlight the anxiety and danger around important causes like climate change, habitat destruction, and so on. I have chosen to box the clips due to the differing qualities and sizes of the supplied footage, which gave me the flexiblity to seamlessly switch slides without jarring the viewer or breaking the atmosphere of the video .
We Are KAUST Brand Statement Video
We conceived this project for a Royal visit that never happened, so we repurposed it into a brand statement to go on Youtube, incurring more than 15,000 views (as of making this portfolio). I was given full creative freedom to direct this project according to the supplied script, so I tried to build a subtle narrative that takes the viewer on a Safari through many of KAUST’s on-campus and off-campus locations as well as letting the viewer time travel to all the different events throughout the year, summarizing a student’s experience through one year in KAUST, ending in our final event of the year, Commencement. I chose all-original footage we’ve taken in the past and I wanted it to be the focus of video. I also incorporated subtle animation that blend with the footage instead of distracting from it, with the goal of making the video enjoyable with or without text and I’d like to think I succeeded. I maintained moving texts to keep that “moving forward” motif through the video, and keeping static the “constants” of KAUST like our values and focuses.

WEP Teaser Teaser Trailer
Available on: https://vimeo.com/378267448
It’s always tricky to create a promo for something that has not happened yet,as the only way to get footage for it is using a time machine. I was tasked with making a teaser trailer for Winter Enrichment, and the video had to be exactly 30 seconds long. In this project, the client and I agreed to focus on the keynote speakers in the promo, as many of them are huge names in the industry and should be recognized for a viewer who knows the industry well. At the same time, we had to cater to the viewer who isn’t, so we picked music that most resembles the soundtrack to a famous medical show and included as many exciting activities without mentioning any specifics in order to get them as excited as the expert viewers, all within 30 seconds and this was the result.
5-Year Service Awards Special Project
In this video, I was tasked with directing and editing the KAUST Employee 5 Years of Service awards, and I was to create a video that celebrates members of the community and their personalities. So I requested a script from Editorial and then my team and I set up the studio to achieve a minimalistic look. What makes this project stand out from my other pieces is the fact that I was given full creative control with no need to stick to brand guidelines, allowing me and my team to be as creative as we want to and delivering the video we want to make and tell the story we want to tell.

Aramco DCUI Conference Video

My work is not always limited to KAUST, sometimes I’m assigned jobs to on-campus teams that are external to our usual scope. One such client was Saudi Aramco, whose R&D Team stationed inside KAUST has approached us to make a rush job for an upcoming conference they were presenting in. And as such, I was to storyboard an improvised script and then I took our team’s videographer and directed some in-lab clips that were complimented by stock footage and old footage supplied by the client. Then working with the AV team at the conference, the video format was adjusted to suit the screens this video was to be played on, making it unusually wide-screen. Despite the scope of this project, which required me and my team to do everything in-house from sound and video recording, to animating and editing; it was finalized in only 3 days, which was one of our quickest turn-outs.
KAUST Branded Videos Recurring Videos
My team and I have developed a template for KAUST’s normal recurring videos, combining design elements that both I and my co-worker April Bailey have previously developed in other videos to make one final template to use in both Arabic and English, keeping all of our recurring videos cohesive. We had to distinguish these videos from KAUST’s other recurring videos, such as Discovery’s science clips and the CoreLabs videos.

I’m also responsible for making all of KAUST’s stings and openings since 2018, having had created all the new animations for KAUST-specific events such as TEDx, KAUST’s podcast ScienceTown, and KAUST’s monthly discussion Sci-Cafe. While most of my animations are done from scratch using the original Adobe Illustrator files supplied to me by the Graphic Design team, sometimes a template is used and restructured per the client’s request.
Some content in this portfolio is meant for KAUST’s internal communications and may not be shared. The only purpose of this document is to showcase the abilities of myself as a video producer and it may not be shared to anyone outside the hiring process. More clips available upon request as we’re always making something new.
