BEHIND THE
A
BADGE
s with most other insignia for organizations, every element of Chicago City SC’s crest is a result of a deliberate choice with great significance behind it. For Chicago City SC’s badge, the story begins over a decade ago when Club founder Nick Mulvaney was appointed
Director of Coaching of Chicago Lakefront Attack Soccer Club. New to the City of Chicago, Nick quickly immersed himself into the culture, and tells the story of knocking on many unanswered doors throughout the City while trying to understand the youth soccer landscape and build relationships to help elevate the club.
CHICAGO CITY Chicago City SC was important to the branding of the club as many youth clubs throughout the Chicagoland area had the name Chicago in front of their name but operated in the suburbs. Chicago City would not only become a club in the city but for the city. It was also a tough decision between Soccer Club and Football Club but because soccer was the American term used, SC was added.
SKYLINE As far as the elements of the crest go, the Chicago skyline is not only one of the most iconic and recognizable but also extremely dynamic. The skyline view changes based on where people are in the city, and so Chicago City can be a point of unification for all 77 neighborhoods.
CHICAGO FLAG Another iconic and recognizable element to the crest is the Chicago flag. Chicago City’s goal is to celebrate all the different components of the city that make it uniquely Chicago. As the goal for the organization was to become the club for the city it was key to ensure it represented the whole city which the white bars do along with the two blue bars that represent the two prominent bodies of water. The red stars within the flag on the crest commemorate four of the greatest events in the city’s history and Chicago City SC wants to build on the work of those who have come before them.
2
The intentionality and purposefulness of the Chicago City SC crest translate into every project that the club takes on. The badge itself serves as a reminder of the importance of that value.
THE LION AND LIONNESS These are a nod to the famous lion sculptures on Michigan Avenue that act as guardians of the city. Mulvaney saw that as a perfect allegory of his desire to have Chicago City SC continue to push the boundaries within the soccer industry by representing Chicago in a positive manner.

MESSAGE FROM OUR
A
FOUNDER
s our 2021-22 season comes to a close for our youth club teams, our summer season is in full swing with youth and adult teams competing in numerous leagues locally and regionally. It has been another exceptional year for the club as we continue to grow and learn to be better for our members, fans, players, and staff. I would like to thank everyone involved with Chicago City Soccer Club, their true passion for this game, their commitment to youth development on and off the field helps create a fun and safe place for us all to enjoy our beautiful game. None of it is possible without a community of people working together, so thank you. Chicago City SC created history for our City in 2022 and you were a part of it. We were able to pull off our ten year goal a year early as we launched the first ever official academy in the City limits of Chicago. We also brought USL W and USL 2 teams to our City to provide more young players with the opportunity to play high level adult soccer in preparation for their college careers or to provide a platform to play professionally in the future. We created all this with the majority of local Chicagoland players and we hope to see our families in the stands for the remaining games. We also have our USL grassroots program running through the Super Y League with teams competing for a place at nationals in Florida in December, as well as Summer I teams competing in local tournaments, and a full schedule of summer camps with P2 and Drive GK.
“IT HAS BEEN ANOTHER EXCEPTIONAL YEAR FOR THE CLUB AS WE CONTINUE TO GROW AND LEARN TO BE BETTER FOR OUR MEMBERS, FANS, PLAYERS, AND STAFF”
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and we will look forward to seeing you all in August. Thank you once again.

WHY STREET SOCCER?
IT’S NOT A SPORT. IT’S A CULTURE. This is how soccer (futbol) is played all over the world; the common person’s game. It wasn’t meant to be pay-to-play. Communities self-organize for unstructured, pickup play. Once vacant or abandoned spaces transform into vibrant epicenters. Anyone can play—all ages, genders, and skill levels. All you need is a ball! Players develop better game skills while also fostering social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Revitalizes the overlooked and restores faith in each other. Street soccer creates inclusive sanctuaries where a dream and a ball are all it takes to come together for the love of the game and those who play it.
WHAT IS THE TOUR? Free, unstructured, pickup street soccer in venues all across the city from June to October. Each venue includes 2-4 portable soccer pitches and transforms a previously quiet
6
space into a vital, safe, active, community gathering spot. Provides opportunity and engagmement for existing community-based organizations. Builds confidence, connection, and community among players and neighborhoods. Provides opportunities for sponsors and their employees to engage with underserved communities and helps build social equity for neighborhood residents.

The USL 2 season for Chicago City SC in 2022 is off to a successful start
T
he club is seeking even better results and deeper development of its talent, however. With each outing, City’s performances have put the club closer to achieving its goals. Its an example of the porgram that Chciago City wants to build for its community. The team sits in 4th place after 9 games with 5 games remaining with a real chance of making playoffs in their first year. The stellar results have been a by-product of contributions from the entire rosters according to head coach Charlie Latshaw III. “The players have settled into their roles within the team, they have done a great job to believe that they all play a part in our shared success. At the moment we are still solidifying the best combination of players and who complement each other well.” The stat sheet reflects Latshaw’s assessment of players’ comfort with each other and their roles. That especially applies to Robert Matei. Matei has been a regular on the scoresheet with the help of Nick Fernandez’s assists. Responsible for keeping City in matches while that combination has worked on the other end has been the combination of all 3 goalkeepers in the
chicagocitysoccerclub.com
squad. Those players are just some of the local talent that Chicago City is featuring in these USL2 matches. Latshaw III is proud of the contributions that area players have made so far. “ I think that we match up well against most teams and truly believe that we have acquired the best Chicago - based talent,” Latshaw III stated. “We see each game as an equal opportunity for us to get three points. We approach each game with the mindset; we are here to impose our style on the opposition and come away with the win.”
FIVE GAMES TO GO TO MAKE PLAYOFFS The coaches and players are working hard toward that goal “the staff and players are working on consistency in playing style, they have have shown good stretches in each match thus far, however we feel that we have yet to put together a complete match in terms of our ideal style.” It is certain that Chicago City SC has already shown its enormous potential in the USL2 league.
13
AXEL ALEJANDRE - USL@ Chicago City SC began its USL 2 program to help players who aspire to play professionally continue to develop their skills. The availability of that level of training has already drawn many with such goals in mind to the program. Axel Alejandre is one such player. So far in this young 2022 USL 2 season, he is making the most out of his opportunity to develop his skills.
ALEJANDRE STAYS IN CHICAGO TO DEVELOP GAME Alejandre grew up in Austin on the west side of Chicago. He says playing for Chicago City was his destination of choice because of the local connection. “I chose to join City’s USL 2 club because I wanted to represent the city’s badge and
14
“IT’S TAUGHT ME TO EXPRESS MYSELF AND FEEL FREE WHEN I PLAY SOCCER” because I believe that this place will make me a better person and player moving forward,” Alejandre commented. Alejandre has seen a good amount of time on the pitch in City’s matches so far in the 2022 USL 2 season. Between that and training time, he’s found a deeper enjoyment of the game. “It’s taught me to express myself and feel free when I play soccer,” Alejandre commented. “I think that’s one of the best things you can have when you play and this place is helping me bring that back.”
A CLUB FOR THE CITY
KYLE MCCURLEY For many players, the USL 2 league is a pivotal step in their development towards a career as a professional soccer player. That’s exactly what Chicago City SC is delivering for one of the players on its current USL 2 club, Kyle McCurley. While McCurley is making the most out of his time on the pitch for City, his ambitions go higher in terms of soccer. As Chicago City prioritizes helping players work toward their goals regardless of what they are, City’s staff are working just as hard to make McCurley’s goal a reality. McCurley’s path to Chicago City SC McCurley says he started playing soccer before he did nearly anything else at the age of three in Lake Zurich, Illinois. He was playing for a local club as he got older before moving to Sockers FC and then the Chicago Magic Academy. After finishing high school, McCurley played collegiately at Wake Forest University. McCurley then played while he was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin. Since then, McCurley played with another USL 2 club, Asheville City. Now, McCurley has brought his ambition and talent to Chicago City.
chicagocitysoccerclub.com
McCurley says that he wanted to play for a USL 2 club in the Chicago area and that City’s coaching staff are what sold him on the club.
MCCURLEY HITS THE GROUND RUNNING WITH CITY City has rewarded McCurley’s faith in its program and training by giving him the developmental experience he wanted. He has been among the club’s most active forwards, recording two shots through City’s first three matches. “City has developed my skills on the pitch by allowing me to play freely within my role and use my skills in any way to help the team,” McCurley commented. “A lot of times, teams will require certain positions to play a certain way, but [head coach] Charlie [Latshaw] allows our players to use our specific skills in a free manner working together so I think the freedom of play has allowed me to develop into a more well rounded and player who is truly himself.” While McCurley has secured his education with his degrees from Wake Forest and Wisconsin, he desires to play soccer on a high level for as long as he can. City is doing all it can to help make that happen.

Kennedy Berschel
M
y name is Kennedy Berschel and I am currently participating as team captain in my second season with Chicago City SC. My first season we competed in the WPSL and this current one we are a part of the USLW. For some background about myself, I am a rising junior soccer player at the Big Ten Division I University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Academically, I am a mechanical engineering major and athletically I play either the 8 or the 10, both attacking mid positions. If I had to describe this season so far in one word, I would say it’s a battle. This team is comprised of both returners and new players, players from the same university and players from different ones across the nation, and even players as young as sophomores in high school. Despite the group’s wide range of individuals and styles of play, we have all come together on the field to put out the best performance we can each game. I think this season has been the textbook definition of a fight. Simply put, results haven’t gone our way, and in almost every game we’ve played, the score has not reflected the soccer we played nor the effort we exerted. Our team chemistry off the field is very tight knit, which is impressive given the short amount of time we’ve had together, and that translates very clearly on the field. Even though our record isn’t one that anyone would be happy with on paper, our fitness, work ethic, and trust in one another – all things that cannot be quantifiable – have been unmatched by any competitor we have faced this 2022 season. Although the season only spans the length of the summer as most of us are college athletes in a fall sport, there is still plenty to take away and use to improve before heading back to our individual universities. I have found that
16
fitness, leadership, and adaptability are the three largest take-aways for my own game. Getting the opportunity to be captain of this team and receive substantial minutes has only strengthened my abilities as a soccer player. As I will be heading back to school in the fall as an upperclassman, this role as captain will have prepped me with the skills and methods necessary for how I want to help lead my own college team. Being a leader occurs both on and off the field. The skills learned as captain will aid in my verbal leadership while my high minutes will attest to my non-verbal, on the field leadership. If I can set a fitness standard for the team, I am being a leader. Lastly, coming onto a team with players from across the nation with little time to prepare to compete is not easy. Having the ability to adapt will be useful taking back to college as I will no longer have to adapt to my own teammates, but rather to every new opponent I face.
chicagocitysoccerclub.com
Chicago City was such an attractive club for me when looking at summer teams for obvious reasons like for the skills listed above, but also because you would be coached by staff with great knowledge of the game who was committed to
my individual development. Coach Nick Mulvaney was the first coach I played under at Chicago City, and I couldn’t be more thankful for his coaching and new perspectives on the game from his experiences in Europe. Not to mention, I am even more thankful to consider Nick a friendly confidante and someone I have in my corner outside of university. Finally, with what may seem like a more minor detail, is that Chicago City’s practice times are very early in the morning. However, I wouldn’t change it because it offers so much flexibility for us athletes to take on summer internships. First and foremost we are students before athletes, so City’s acknowledgement of that and their consideration to work around potential job opportunities was much better than other clubs I considered. On that job-related note, an interesting fact about me is that, if an opportunity to play professional soccer is not presented to me, I dream of being either a Disney Imagineer or an engineer in the Air Force.
Sami Scaffidi
U
SLW have had an up and down season so far but have shown at times that they can not only compete with the top teams in the league but push them all the way and with a bit more luck, things may have been different. Starting forward Sami Scaffidi, from Maryland who played at St John’s University in Queens, NY before professional stents in Switzerland with FF Lugano and Portugal with Boavista FC. After relocating to live in Chicago working as a teacher, Sami continues playing for the love of the game now with Chicago City SC. She says “I love being able to play soccer with kids at school but my competitive edge takes over at times and so it ends up being 15+ kids versus me, it’s a good time”. She goes on to say that playing for Chicago City in the USL W league allows her to “play competitively with a great group of women who also have the same love for the game as I do”. Sami mentions Chicago City is a great club to be a part of and that she wants to be
chicagocitysoccerclub.com
part of growing the womens’ game in Chicago. “Now that I’m done playing overseas I want to be a part of this new movement and I want there to be more opportunities for women to play competitively outside of the NWSL, it’s great that the USL Super league is forming in 2023 and I hope it continues to grow with supportive teams like Chicago City.

t was not only the 1st season for City in USL but also entering into the prestigious Mid West Premier League (MWPL) for the first time. Under the leadership of Coach Stuart Barlow who is originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, he has recruited two Englishmen to fill out his team with Dan Fernhead from Bolton and Adam Waterson from Ipswich who coach at Wizards FC in Hinsdale. Coach Stu is a very experienced coach and has been coaching all levels throughout the Chicagoland area and so was the perfect candidate for this position. With previous MWPL experience last year, Stu went into this season preparing his team for a challenging first season which he says its been tough “the team have had a mixed start to the season, we’ve been playing well and creating chances but just not able to put them away. We could’ve won all of our games but were punished by some clinical finishing from the opposition, which is unfortunate, but we will continue to work hard on the training pitch to get points on the board’. The team showed great character versus top of the
table RWB Adria when they were 2-0 down with 10 mins to play and pulled it back to 2-2. “We’ve created a solid group of players and the camaraderie is high. We’ve been particularly impressed with the leadership of Colin Campbell at the back and the tenacity of Jethro Yumange in midfield”. Coach Stu and his team bounced back with a massive 8-0 win last week and will look forward to a local derby versus Chicago House on July 2nd. We hope to see you in the stands. GO CITY!!!!
