WE ARE CHICAGO CITY. WE ARE A FAMILY. WE ARE A COMMUNITY. chicagocitysoccerclub.com ISSUE 3 | AUG 2022

CHICAGO CITY Chicago City SC was important to the branding of the club as many youth clubs throughout the Chicagoland area had the name Chicago in front of their name but operated in the suburbs. Chicago City would not only become a club in the city but for the city. It was also a tough decision between Soccer Club and Football Club but because soccer was the American term used, SC was added. The intentionality and purposefulness of the Chicago City SC crest translate into every project that the club takes on. The badge itself serves as a reminder of the importance of that value.

2 chicagocitysoccerclub.com BEHIND THE BADGE

The red stars within the flag on the crest commemorate four of the greatest events in the city’s history and Chicago City SC wants to build on the work of those who have come before them.

CHICAGO FLAG

Another iconic and recognizable element to the crest is the Chicago flag. Chicago City’s goal is to celebrate all the different components of the city that make it uniquely Chicago. As the goal for the organization was to become the club for the city it was key to ensure it represented the whole city which the white bars do along with the two blue bars that represent the two prominent bodies of water.

SKYLINE

THE LION AND LIONNESS These are a nod to the famous lion sculptures on Michigan Avenue that act as guardians of the city. Mulvaney saw that as a perfect allegory of his desire to have Chicago City SC continue to push the boundaries within the soccer industry by representing Chicago in a positive manner.

As with most other insignia for organizations, every element of Chicago City SC’s crest is a result of a deliberate choice with great significance behind it. For Chicago City SC’s badge, the story begins over a decade ago when Club founder Nick Mulvaney was appointed

As far as the elements of the crest go, the Chicago skyline is not only one of the most iconic and recognizable but also extremely dynamic. The skyline view changes based on where people are in the city, and so Chicago City can be a point of unification for all 77 neighborhoods.

Director of Coaching of Chicago Lakefront Attack Soccer Club. New to the City of Chicago, Nick quickly immersed himself into the culture, and tells the story of knocking on many unanswered doors throughout the City while trying to understand the youth soccer landscape and build relationships to help elevate the club.

WE STAND IN SOLIDARITY & SUPPORT. Chicago City is both saddened and outraged by the tragic events and countless inequalities experienced across our communities. Inclusion and diversity are at the epicenter of everything we stand for at Chicago City and now more than even, we are committed to bringing our communities together through sport to be the healing and permanent change needed. It is our duty to protect the communities in which we play, and we hope that as a Chicago City Family, we can stand together stronger than ever and be the change that we want to see. Our thoughts and prayers are with the many individuals, communities and families that have suffered during this time. We can, and all must, do better.

chicagocitysoccerclub.com 5 A BIG THANK YOU! TO OUR COMMUNITY CLUB PARTNERS

Nick Mulvaney with Darren Isted and Alex Tunbridge

6 chicagocitysoccerclub.com WELCOME VISITS

Both held meetings with Chicago City SC Founder Nick Mulvaney and were impressed to find out more about the history, current structure and aspirations of the club. The visit will hopefully be the first in a series of ties with the Football League clubs in the UK.

Alex Tunbridge, CEO of Cambridge United FC in EFL League One and Darren Isted, Stevenage FC Foundation trustee and founder of Hashtag Digital Media, which produces digital and print sporting programs worldwide, were on a fact-finding mission to Chicago and St Louis.

Nick Mulvaney with Brian Byrne

hicago City Soccer Club Founder Nick Mulvaney had a special reason to welcome Brian Byrne on a technical visit to the club recently.

hicago SC welcomed delegations with representatives from two English Football League clubs recently as they came to view our facilities and our penultimate USL2 game of the season.

Brian flew across from the UK where he is involved with the Fleetwood Town FC Academy, a club which plays in the EFL League One. The two had plenty to catch up on, not just concerning current football matters but because they both grew up in the same town in Ireland!

Coach Simone began by saying “seeing England Women win the Euro’s filled me with a huge sense of pride and emotion. It was amazing to finally see women’s football get the coverage, support and recognition they deserve”.

added - “This tournament was always more than just about winning games and a trophy, it was about breaking down barriers and inspiring a generation. Not every girl is going to be into football, but having the opportunity to play and role models to look up to is massive”. It is a huge achievement for the England team and for soccer in general and we are happy to have Simone and Lekeisha working with our players here in Chicago as we look to continue the good work in Chicago.

Simone finished with “Congratulations to the Lionesses and thank you for bringing football home! “ while Lekeisha expressed her joy also, “the lionesses brought it home. I have been in the women’s game for the past 24 years in England and winning the Euro’s is a highlight for sure. I was fortunate to attend most of England’s games in the tournament and experienced some of the best atmospheres ever at a match.”

ENGLAND’S LIONESS’S MAKE HISTORY

Lekeisha grew up in Leicester while playing for their Women’s team professionally and then coaching within the girls academy and senior team. She is proud to have played a part in this historic journey and as she turns her attention to the young female players of Chicago, she is excited to create something just as special. Congratulations to the England’s women’s national team.Simone Lekeisha

A

s the England Women’s national team lifted the European Championship Cup this summer, history was made. This was the first senior competition win for English football since 1966 when the men’s teams won. There has been a huge investment in the women’s game in England but also within Europe as game attendances are continuing to be broken each week. The viewership of the women’s game is also increasing and so it is a really exciting time for women’s soccer Afterglobally.this historic win we spoke with our own Lioness’s here at Chicago City. Coach Simone and Coach Lekeisha who both grew up, played, and coached in the UK before choosing the USA for a future within the game, spoke on how much this win means to them and the future of the game. It was not too long ago that they had to play on boys teams growing up as there were not enough girls playing soccer and so it is a great time to see the positive changes for young girls in the game.

Simone who was born and raised in Huddersfield, England played growing up but found it difficult to find a girls only team to play on. Her time in soccer brought her to the US in a coaching role and as she now has a full time career in the game she is proud to be part of providing more opportunities for young female Lekeishaplayers.shares her thoughts on the future by saying - “I have watched the game grow and develop and I cannot wait to see it keep growing. Girls no longer have to dream of selling out stadiums and being watched by millions of fans, we have done it and will continue to do it. Women’s football is entering a special time and I am so happy to be part of Simoneit!”.

T

his summer was a very busy time at the club with many different programs running for all ages, levels, and abilities. It was really energizing to see so many players looking to continue on from the Spring season to keep up the hard work from the previous 3 seasons. For our younger age groups we have two programs, USL Super Y League which is for more of the elite level players and then our Summer Tour program for al level of players with less travel and commitment.

The SYL league is the beginning of the USL player pathway which holds a national tounrment each December where USL scouts and college coaches are in attendance. From this event team will be crowned national champions along with the top individual players chosen for the Natioanl Xperience which is the all star team for U14 and U16 boys and girls held at a USL Pro club each year in Spring.

Thank you to local clubs

Coach Craig McDonald leads up the Super Y program each year and after some strong recruitment from chicagoland clubs, the club will have 3 teams from 7 heading to the National tournament in December, in Tampa, Florida.

Chicago Magic, FC United, CFJC, CFJW, Pegasus, Northwind, Jahbat, O’hare strikers, Ipro, Ponys, and FC select for working with Chicago City to provide a positive environment for our players.

“Super y was great for Chicagoland players to come together to compete at such a high level throughout the Summer, Competing against some of the best teams throughout the Midwest will only add to the challenge for players to develop and flourish, the players to come together and compete so strongly was a pleasure to see“

he recent USA Cup which was held in Minnesota proved to be a major success for Chicago City SC as no less than 13 teams took part. We were lucky enough to play teams from all over the world this year, playing various ages against various teams from Puerto Rico, Mexico and from many states in the US. For the players to play against teams from outside the country opens their eyes to the passion and support that people have from all over the world when it comes to soccer.

Of those that took part, five teams had conquered their pathway to the championship and came out victorious. These teams were the 2012 boys, 2011 boys, 2010 boys, 2007 boys and 2010 girls. A special mention goes to the 2007 boys who played with exact numbers each game and came away victorious after a tough week Coaches for the event were Craig McDonald, Edgar Camberos, Ben Galvez, Aaron Onion with guest coverage from JD Jones and guest players came from Wisconsin, Kansas, Puerto Rico, Ukraine.

The 13 teams which took part were as follows:

“We appreciate your efforts this summer. Juliet really enjoyed her experience with the 2012/2013 girls City team and I think you did an AMAZING job coaching those girls and organizing friendlies with local clubs. The emphasis on passing and drills to speed up the decision making are really going to benefit her going “Thanksforward.”for having Rafi during summer I and offering some flexibility. Even though he wasn’t able to make many practices or games I’m glad he got the opportunity for you to coach him for a game. Tommy, Ian’s dad, has spoken very highly of your approach it was great to be able to witness it firsthand. Edgar was great too. Hopefully Rafi can play under you guys at some point in his City career! This week he is at Eurotech camp up in Lake Forest College.

“We had an amazing pool of our youngest players. After a few practices they bonded with their teams and made those teams look stronger which was very impressive. Coach Pedja did a really good job managing the schedule as it was not easy to find teams for each age group as the league was cancelled at the last minute. I just want to say thank you to Pedja for the organization, it’s the second time I took part in it the program and the experience was amazing.”

“WantedAvi” to take a moment and thank you for all your help and support this summer season. Jax had a great time and it was really fun for him to experience other players and other coaches and he truly enjoyed himself unfortunately it was only for a couple games but the practices and the coaching were really beneficial in his development and we are really looking forward to the fall season. Look forward to seeing you out on the field and as always any support tips tricks whatever it may be we’re always open to improving and getting better thank you.”

“We enjoyed what you guys made of the summer program. Thanks to you and coach Edgar for coaching the Illuzzi kids! We look forward to seeing you guys next

Our Summer Tour program is similar to SYL but with less travel committment and elite level of play. Usually the teams will compete in the Summer I league but this summer it was postponed and so friendlies were organized in place of the league games. Coach Pedja Maksimovic lead up this program was very pleased to see how many players came together and played together for the first time as a team. He loved the character the players were able to show great teamwork from higher and lower level players together. We had 5 teams:

“Thankseason!”you for your responses! We also saw the team update earlier and are happy to hear there are some additional players; with it being so hot I’m sure the boys will appreciate the ability to have water breaks here and there. Thanks for all your work to make these games happen.“

USA CUP COACH EDGAR CAMBEROS

The team finished 1st of their group with 2 ties and 1 win including a late tie against a very good Canadian team. This point was crucial because only the first of each group make it directly to the quarter finals. The team played the quarter final on Friday with a comfortable victory of 3-0. We pressured the opposition the first 30 min and scored 3 goals, after which we controlled the ball for the rest of the game. The semi-final was played on Saturday and was a tough game. The score was 2-2 in the regulation, and we conceded a goal in the last minute. We fought hard until the end, but unfortunately conceded a header in the last minute of extra-time. The team played to their limit and it was a very physical game -- they were tired but happy to be in the finals. The final was a messy game and was very tight; the cramps started to appear through the 2nd half. 10 minutes before the end of regular time, we conceded a penalty kick which was stopped by our goalkeeper. At the start of extra time we conceded a goal, but after that moment, we started to pressure the other team on their own half until the last minute when after a long distance free-kick, our captain scored a dramatic diving header. We went on to penalties and won 3-0 with a stunning performance by our amazing GK who stopped all the shots. As a coach in this situation, I felt like I had little or no impact on the game/team. At least, that’s how I felt before the start of the tournament, but I was wrong.

Once upon a time, eleven warriors started their journey in the faraway lands of Minnesota to become champions of the USA Cup...

The USA Cup at Minnesota is the biggest soccer celebration in North America and one of the biggest in the world. Held during summer, it has a duration of 1 week starting on Tuesday and finishing on Saturday on an annual basis. This year more than 1200 teams from all over the world took part in the tournament from U8 to U18, and our club, Chicago City, brought 13 teams, of which 5 teams left Blaine as champions. One of the winners was our U15 Boys who participated with only 11 players, (2 players dropping out at the last minute; 3 guest players who never played with the team before; and the remaining 8 players were part of 2 different teams from within the club). The odds were stacked against them but something that surprising was how fast they created bonds and their predisposition to work as a team from the beginning.

It’s incredible how the little details have an impact on the performance of the team and I can honestly say that I learned from this experience more than I thought. The team showed resilience and solidarity all the way through and after the second game, they played like they had been playing together for years. Every one of them had a brilliant moment during the tournament; the 11 warriors fought together and succeeded to win the cup and secure memories that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

14 A CLUB FOR THE CITY SUMMER ADULT RECAP USL 2 | USL W | MWPL | NSL

THANK YOU!!!!!!!

“Many players have other committments beyond soccer throughout the summer months and so we were grateful for the level of professionalism the players showed with a busy training and game schedule each week, over a short period.”

As our Founder, Nick Mulvaney stepped down as Head Coach, he recruited Coach Latshaw who brought in Coach Clark, and the built a strong team of coaches which created a posiitve enviroment for the players. Coach Clark was key in the recruitment of some of the top talent trhoughout teh Chicagoland area and as he explains it was built on trust over many years with collegiate coaches. Josh spends a lot of time researching players as the City model would be mainly built up of local Chicagoland players to fit with the culture of the organization. With an average age of 19yrs old, the team was one of the youngest squads and go off to a incredible start. The team was building a reputation with their style of play which Josh describes as “a fast paced, attractive style of possession that zips teh ball around making the opposition work to retrieve the ball.”.

Head Coach for both team Charlie Latshaw III was very pleased with both groups of players, “upon stepping into the USL league platform, the players did an excellent job of adjusting quickly to a new style of play, finishing the season off very strong, the girls unbeaten in the final five games, and the men misisng out slightly on a playoff spot”.

The goal for City is to make a legitimate run to the national tournmant with a team composed with Chicago based players, playing a style of football that is iconic to the Chicao City SC name. Coach Josh believes we are the next big threat to the USL, and next season begins now. He also added, “we are proud and excited for our future as a team and as a club. You will see many of these young talented faces back next season where we will continue to play our distinctive brand of football with a swagger and a purpose that no one will be able to match”, Thank you to our amazing coaching staff lead by Charlie Latshaw III, Josh, Clark, Raul Diaz, Eoin Wearin, and Tom Paparounis, along with our team behind the scenes led by CEO Nick Mulvaney and COO Heather Bickerton, and finally thank you to our team of interns, parent volunteers, family, and friends all helped make this season possible.

Chicago City rounded up ther inaugural season for both Women and Men’s teams in 3rd position which is a very respectful placement for a new team of players and coaching staff in very competitiive divisions.

It was a new adventure for eveyone at CCSC and Mens Assistant Coach, Josh Clark added, “our USL2 season has been a massive learning curve for all involved, but we look forward to building on the great momentum picked up this summer.”

On the mens side it clicked sooner as they found themselves ranked 19th in the country after an undefeated mid season. After a very tough road trip to Kansas the team suffered two loses as the squad was affected with players having internship committments.

Coach Latshaw III added that on the women’s side, “they were eager to participate in a new training environment, their enthusiasm in training quickly transferred over to the game day environment.”

“It was a constant learning experience for myself and the staff as it can be very challenging when a group of players have to come together in a short period of time and click”, Coach Stu expressed the uniqueness of the season. “ It was key to have a staff who were all pulling together and providing the finer details on when certain players should play certain games, we had a strong chemistry between the group of coaches, and I believe it fed into the culture of the team also.”

Coach Stuart sharde “having played well but finding ourselves 2-0 down it was incredible to see the fight and determination to claw back

Coach Stuart Barlow, Dan Fearnhead, Adam Waterson, and Tom Paparounis had a really strong finish to the inaugural season in the Midwest Premier League (MWPL) taking seven points from the last three games. The boys rounded out with a 4-2 win on the road to Steel City FC. “ It was a fluid performance seeing the lads express themselves and really come together for the final game”, Head Coach Stuart Barlow Theexpressed.season had many ups and downs but one of the high-points and most memorable games was the 2-2 tie against the highly rated RWD Adria who finished joint top of the league.

The MWPL finished a respectable mid table and will look forward to building on the success this summer next season. This was a really exciting league that we hope our City families look to support by coming to games next summer to cheer on the boys.

chicagocitysoccerclub.com

Stu mentions that his most memorable goal was that of Luis Ramos who is a Chicago City alumni and played in the youth club for many years, but his goal in the last game of the season to seal the win at 4-1 was a little bit Stuspecial.also spoke on the importance of that team culture which is a big part of the club culture at Chicago City; “The biggest takeaway was how much we needed every player in the squad. Some players definitely seemed frustrated in the early weeks with not seeing much field time but for those that stuck with it and kept showing up, we were able to give them meaningful minutes which saw some valuable contributions, and the NSL boys really helped us out towards the end of the season.”

Coach Arturo Hernandez from Albany Park, a local youth and adult soccer player, took on the Head Coaching position for our NSL team playing in the Chicago division this summer. Coach Arturo also played on the field along with Coach Stuart Barlow who helped the team finish runner up in their inaugural season also.

Throughout the season the team performed strongly in central areas through the leadership of Jack Straughn, Colin Campbell, Lyndon Hu, Jethro Yumange and Alex Beausoleil, they provided a solid spine for the team.

The program helped current college players and high school players headed to college in August to stay sharp during the months leading into their preseason camp. Tom Paparounis remarked, “The most exciting result of what we are doing with this program is we are both building a highly respected training environment for these college players and creating a community of players who share their unique perspectives from their own college experiences. They showed up simply as fellow goalkeepers but have left for school as new friends. That is amazing to see! GOALKEEPING Summer ‘22 kicked off with weekly training for the goalkeepers of Chicago City SC’s USL League 2 and W league teams. The teams had GKs represented from across the midwest and various NCAA divisions. “Helping these top goalkeepers train all summer and prepare for their upcoming collegiate season was something I really enjoyed being a part of this summer”, commented Tom Paparounis, Director and Founder of Drive Goalkeeping. Also noteworthy was one of Chicago City’s homegrown youth academy players, Almir Hajdarevic, gaining first-team training experience. “It is a testament to the youth goalkeeping program we create within the club that one of our developmental players is selected for a playing opportunity. That was an invaluable experience for Almir which no doubt will help him excel this upcoming club season,” said Tom Paparounis. To learn more about Chicago City Sc’s USL pathway

For the second summer in a row Drive Goalkeeping held a high school tryout prep camp for a dozen goalkeepers in and around Chicago. “This camp is one of our favorites of the summer because it gets high school goalkeepers who play at competing schools working together for these few days to help each other prepare for their respective seasons. You can see the comradery of the goalkeeper position transcend any rivalry that might exist during the season. Players are coming together to help one another. It truly is why we love this camp every August”, said Founder, Tom Paparounis.
