Toby serves up a delight for #Herts cheese lovers Are you smitten on Stilton or taken with Tunworth? Do you crave Camembert? If so, you just might be a turophile, the ultimate cheese lover. From an irregular formation of the Greek word for cheese, tyros, plus the English -phile, meaning "lover", turophile first named cheese enthusiasts as early as 1938. I had the opportunity to meet Hertfordshire turophile, Toby Archer, Award winning Cheesemonger and cheese shop owner in Buntingford. ?I just had an idea to start a cheese shop?he said with a chuckle, ?Cut my

arm and I have got blue veins.?It?s a far cry from Toby?s former job in plastic injection mouldings. A little research revealed that cheese is quite literally in the Archer?s blood. The family tree,

going back to 1880 in London, revealed two of Toby?s ancestors were also cheesemongers. Toby?s knowledge and palate is excellent, and it bagged him a job as a judge at the World Cheese Awards 2012, a bit like the cheese Oscars, held every year at the BBC Good Food Show at the Birmingham NEC. ?The challenge for the judges is to get 4,500 cheeses down to just one?. In 2013, Toby himself entered the Big Cheese Challenge and was awarded The Le Gruyere AOP ?Highly commended?for Cheesemonger and

?Highly commended?Cheese counter at the 2013 World Cheese Awards, first cheese business in Hertfordshire to ever receive these awards. 2017 once again saw him and other master cheesemongers judge over 4500 cheeses at The Tobacco Dock, Taste of London?s Christmas event. The Cheese Plate offer an extensive range of both British and Continental cheeses, specialising in artisan cheeses. With over 200 cheeses to choose from you'll be spoilt for choice when you visit The Cheese Plate in Buntingford. Whether you're

looking for that one particular cheese or want to create the perfect cheeseboard for a dinner party, their knowledgeable and friendly staff will be able to help you select the right cheese for your requirements. Confident in the popularity of cheese, Toby hosts Cheese and Wine tasting evenings, which have become the talk of the town. ?It?s a fabulous night?s entertainment, six delicious cheeses, matched with divine wine, and while indulging, you get to learn about the different cheese?s, where they originate

from and what to serve them with. Toby and this team also offer something very special for weddings; Cheese wedding cakes which have really taken off over the last few years. People choose them because they want something a bit different or because they just love cheese! For corporate events and other special outside catering their cheese slates are an ingenious alternative to a traditional buffet or desert at a dinner party. They can be used at any setting whether it be a corporate event or something more personal. With a wide selection of cheese, they expertly pick outstanding cheeses with complementary biscuits and accompaniments. They also offer an extensive range of all things cheese from wines, cheese boards, preserves and biscuits, you will find everything cheese related under one roof. So why not take a drive out to Buntingford and take a table at one of their window seats and enjoy lunch or an afternoon snack; perhaps a Cheese plate, Rarebit or Croque Monsieur with a glass of wine, you will not be disappointed. POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER FOR HERTS David Lloyd

Proud of the support that Beacon provides Being a victim of crime is a traumatic and stressful event. The impact is often long lasting, and different people deal with the effects of it in different ways. It shouldn?t happen in the first place, of course, but if it does, you should be confident that the support you?re going to get from the police is going to help you recover. In 2015, to improve the care provided to victims in Hertfordshire, I set up the Beacon service. This would be a ?one stop shop?for victim care. Offering a single point of contact for those people unfortunate enough to have been victims and providing dedicated and enhanced support to those people who were particularly vulnerable or at risk of further harm. It was a great success, and working with Victim Support and the Constabulary, specialist police officers and care workers have offered assistance to more than 120,000 people since the service started. Of those people, over 35,000 have received so-called ?enhanced packages?of care, meaning they have specially designed care depending on their individual needs. Since January, the service has had Vulnerable Victim Case Managers who will work exclusively with individuals who need dedicated care right

police; that the staff receive the best training to ensure the highest levels of support; and finally, that the service keeps the victim safe and gives them greater control over the process. The new provider will deliver these principles, and in partnership, increase the number of areas which Beacon provides care for ? including domestic abuse, sexual assault, fraud and cyber-crime, crimes which are currently supported through different organisations. through their case from beginning to the end ? whenever that may be. Presently, these officers work on burglaries, assisting vulnerable people or people who may have been repeatedly targeted, and the feedback we have had on their work has been overwhelmingly positive. However, from next month, I want to do even more and roll this service out to cover even more crimes. Last year, Beacon held a public consultation on what the public wanted the service to deliver in the future. There were three key ambitions they agreed would need to be delivered: that every victim would be offered help, regardless of when the crime happened or whether it was reported to the

At the heart of this service is the Victim?s Code of Practice. This is a set of entitlements setting out how victims and witnesses should be supported throughout the Criminal Justice System. This includes commitments to communicating with victims, supporting them and explaining all aspects of the criminal process to them, including a right to review should the victim disagree with a decision not to prosecute. Essentially it?s about keeping people supported and informed of their case. Beacon does that so well, I?m excited about how it will be able to do even more in the future. If you need to access Beacon, please visit the website at www.hertfordshirebeacon.org

Get ready for the chorus of nature as April arrives and brings spring with it

Blu ebells by Josh Ku bale Spring has sprung! As we go into April you?ll start to hear lots more birdsong and see more colour as plants spring into life. This is the time when one of our best loved spring spectacles takes place ? bluebells carpet our woodland floors in a dazzling display. Bluebells spend most of the year as bulbs underground, only emerging to flower and leaf from

April onwards. This early spring flowering allows them to make the most of the sunlight that is still able to make it to the forest floor and attracts the attention of plenty of pollinating insects. Millions of bulbs may exist in one bluebell wood and new plants are sometimes able to split off from these bulbs and grow as clones. Bluebells are perhaps one of our most famous and unmistakeable woodland flowers - look for long

and narrow, drooping leaf fronds and bending flower stems heavy with the nodding, blue bells that give this flower its name. While you?re out in the woods, look for our spring butterflies too ? finally on the wing now there?s some warmth and sunshine. The orange tip is a great place to start as they can be spotted in many places, even your back garden! The male orange tip is unmistakeable: a white butterfly, half of the

forewing is a bold orange, with light grey wingtips. The female does not sport the vivid orange colour and looks like a small version of the whites - she can be distinguished by the mottled, 'mossy grey' pattern on the underside of her hindwings. The brimstone butterfly is also a lovely sight to behold on a spring day ? look for the large, lemon-yellow butterfly in damp woodlands, along sunny woodland rides, mature hedgerows and in large gardens.Male brimstones are bright yellow and female are greenish-white with orange spots in the middle of each wing both have pointed wings. Brimstones always rests with their characteristically pointed wings closed. To see bluebells and but t erflies in

When flowers make the perfect farewell Floral tributes can be a lovely way to express your feelings at a funeral. A display of colourful blooms shows love and respect for the person who has gone, and can be a great comfort to the bereaved. After the funeral, you may want to take some of the smaller arrangements home or offer them to close family and friends. Some people may wish to donate them to a local hospital, care home or hospice ? although you should phone first to check they accept floral arrangements. With larger arrangements, you could ask each mourner if they?d like to select a single flower to take away with them. It gives everyone a little memory of the deceased and the remainder of the flowers can then be placed on the grave. There are also ways to cherish the floral tributes by making them into a longer-lasting, or even permanent, keepsake. You could press the flowers then craft them into a bookmark or drinks coaster, or place the pressed

flowers into a glass display frame to hang on the wall. If you like crafting you might also want to consider using the dried flowers to make into jewellery or creating a candle. There are also companies that will do this for you. Potpourri is another way of holding onto floral tributes. This can be quite simple to make using dried flowers and leaves along with your favourite

essential oil. You can enjoy the scent at home, or make up gift bags to give to family members or friends. This could make an especially memorable present for anyone who wasn?t able to attend the funeral. And of course, if you accepted potted plants at the funeral, these can be replanted in your garden or given to a relative who isn?t able to regularly visit the churchyard or crematorium.

St evenage regenerat ion Stevenage Borough Council has appointed international developer Mace to undertake the first phase of an exciting and ambitious programme of town centre regeneration, with construction expected to start next year. Mace was selected as the successful partner following a tendering process that saw three other national developers competing for the work, showing real confidence in the future of Stevenage. The scheme brings around ÂŁ350million of private investment into the town and the planned development is for the western side of the town centre ? where the council offices, the Plaza, bus station and several surface car parks are currently located. Hertfordshire LEP committed ÂŁ34m funding to help rejuvenate the town and kickstart development, which celebrates the heritage of the New Town while bringing it into the 21st century. It includes new shops, homes, and a bespoke central venue for a library, exhibition space, health services and council offices. It will also create a new linear park, and food and drink space with bars and restaurants in the heart of the town for people to enjoy.

The conference will coincide with the official launch of the Hertfordshire Science Partnership; the innovative collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire, with MP Richard Harrington, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, highlighting its importance and potential impact on the county?s thriving life sciences sector. The LEP will also look back at the progress over the past year, highlighting its flagship projects and key areas of impact, and set out plans for the future as it continues to work towards a shared goal of economic prosperity. Don't blame a lack of customer care on bad business M y #Her t s by Dar r en Ist ed It was on a recent visit to NatWest in Harpenden that I discovered the full extent of the bank?s cull of branches in #Herts. It was my bad for missing the news a month or so earlier but I had no idea that in a few weeks NatWest will be stripping out more branches in the county as the lurch from bricks and mortar continues. Of course the signs have been there for years. The lack of tills (and this is across the board not just with NatWest) and the constant appeal to use self service rather than be served by a human. But all the same it came as a shock that such an institution was shutting up shop and waving the white flag. For there can be no other way of viewing this. Fuming, I then ventured into the nearby Sainsbury?s store to be accosted by self service checkouts and the rising steam of fury from those who simply can?t scan or frankly don?t want to scan. Once again the number of tills was reduced, the signs there for all to see, if you?re human, we really don?t need you. At this point readers may point to #Herts as part of the problem, surely we are a digital magazine, riding off the back of the web age which has killed off many of the big high street names. Where once we all shopped and served on the high street, now there are fewer and fewer who wish to venture out to browse and shop, instead it?s clicked at home in comfort, and more often than not at a considerable discount. To those people I simply say look again. Let?s have a look at those dearly departed such as Woolies, Blockbuster, BHS, Comet, MFI et al. Did the web kill them all? Did digital do away with their customer base? Did a raft of buildings to manage cut their throats? No, no and no.

At the heart of all of these are both poor planning and management and a failure to deal swiftly with the changing customer demand. Did Netflix kill Blockbuster or was it a failure to grasp the rise of the download and adapt. Comet was one of the first to move away from the high street back in the 1960s, but these groundbreakers simply stared at the changing marketplace for electrical and acted far too slowly. MFI were kings of kitchens and bathrooms, but it was financial failings which proved costly in the crunch of 2008. And so it goes on. For all those people who are cutting back on service, offering you less under the guise of ?responding to customer needs?or ?going digital?then perhaps they should think again. When you force customers to use self service and deny the interactivity of human contact and when you bemoan the web and cite the way digital is changing our population then it?s a self fulfilling prophecy.

Bath and kitchen range expansion for Henlow Building Supplies Henlow Building Supplies is a family run business based on Stratton Business Park in Biggleswade. The company started life in 1978 with humble beginnings as a small hardware and ironmongery shop operating out of Henlow High Street. The team grew over time and relocated, moving to another site in Henlow before settling in their current location in Biggleswade. Over the past 40 years the friendly staff have followed the family?s traditional values of personal service and knowledgeable advice which makes them a popular local business for the people of Bedfordshire. This year marks big changes for the company as they expand their

range of bathroom and kitchen products with a complete showroom refurbishment.

team have only picked the best brands to work with for their customers.

The upstairs of the store has been opened up to include a top of the range kitchen display and new model showers such as the modern Coram enclosures. The

HBS will still be stocking traditional bathroom favourites such as Porcelanosa and Roper Rhodes but will expand their range to include high end brands such as

V&A, Laura Ashley and Ted Baker. The company is branching out into kitchen supplies this year and the new range will feature the innovative brand ClicBox from BA Clic Components, a range of kitchen cabinets which click together in less than 30 seconds. It?s tried and tested by the HBS team! As spring is finally coming the yard is being fully stocked with garden and landscaping supplies and HBS offer free local delivery to Biggleswade and the surrounding areas. New this year is the Stonemarket Fortuna vitrified garden paving which is perfect for easy maintenance and available in

6 colours. If you?ve been thinking about updating your fences, laying down some new decking or just updating your garden, speak to the team for some helpful advice.

Trade customers are still at the heart of what Henlow Building Supplies do and they aim to support them where they can with the HBS trade card. This allows trades to link their details to each of their purchases for personalised discounts. Lytton Arms set to reopen with focus on real ale collection Award winning hospitality group Anglian Country Inns (ACI) are very proud to be adding to its family with the acquisition of The Lytton Arms, the iconic real ale pub situated in the historical village of Knebworth in north Hertfordshire. This free-of-tie pub overlooks the stunning Knebworth Park estate and is the 9th in ACI?s diverse hospitality estate. The Nye family has strong ties to the pub, with (Uncle) Steve Nye having built up a national reputation for real ale while he ran the pub in the 1990s. Whilst the pub has been closed recently, the Nye family is looking to restore the pub to the centre of the local community with a big focus on the quality and range of beers with wholesome food and a warm welcome to boot.

James Nye, Group Managing Director said ?When we heard about the opportunity of The Lytton Arms, it was very hard not to be excited. I had my first job scrubbing dishes in the kitchen and it is a pub very close to our family. Whilst wet led pubs may have been struggling during recent years, we feel there is a great opportunity to make the most of the free-of-tie position to curate an exciting collection of real ales, craft beers and ciders, alongside an authentic food offer. We are very excited to be writing the next chapter for The Lytton Arms and very much look forward to serving the local community. This sort of pub is very much part of our ethos and we see it as a great opportunity to further expand our existing successful

portfolio.? Howard Nye, Director has been instrumental in the renovation and refurbishment programme, said Howard, ?This exciting acquisition is very close to my heart and we know it is a ?much loved?local watering hole. The refurbishment will not detract from its original character and will make the most of the Lutyens building and the history attached to the pub and the park. "We want to create a great environment to enjoy the quality range of beers and make the most of the rotating cask ales on the 10 hand pulls as well as a wholesome rustic menu created from local produce. The beer garden will be completely revamped too?.

It's starting to grow again Work on your veget ables: Dig in a 5cm (or more) layer of compost, well rotted manure or green waste into your beds to prepare for the growing season. Growing potatoes in grow bags - top up compost as the plants grow. Plant your chitted potatoes outside in the ground or in potato grow bags. Harvest asparagus spears when they are no more than 18cm tall. For quick and easy pea supports push some twiggy sticks around your pea plants now. Thin your carrot seedlings to achieve good-size carrots - do this in the evening when fewer carrot flies are around. Many crops can be direct sown into the ground now including parsnips, cabbages and radishes. In t he flower garden: Lift and divide perennial plants now to improve their vigour and create new plants for your garden. Divide Hostas before they come into leaf. Divide Primroses after they have finished flowering. You can start to move evergreen shrubs and trees now provided the soil isn't frozen or

Th e # H er t s t eam of ex per t s gi v e you som e t op t i ps an d j obs t o do as t h e gar den st ar t s t o w el com e spr i n g act i v i t y... waterlogged. Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Ranunculus into beds, borders and containers. Apply a balanced slow release fertiliser to trees, shrubs and hedges Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a balanced,slow-release fertiliser by lightly forking it into the soil surface. Roses are greedy plants and will greatly benefit from feeding as they come into growth. Continue to plant herbaceous perennials. Forced flower bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils, which have now finished flowering, can be planted outdoors in garden borders. Hardwood cuttings taken last year may need planting or potting on now. If any of your garden plants will need supporting this year, put the supports in now so the plants grow up through them. Adding supports afterwards is difficult and and may

damage the plant. In t he greenhouse: If you haven't already, give your greenhouse a thorough scrub with hot soapy water to get rid of pests and diseases and to let more light in. Start to sow tomato seeds indoors, ready to plant out after all risk of frost has passed. If you're struggling for growing space buy ready-grown tomato plants. Continue to sow half-hardy annual seeds under cover take care not to expose them to frost. General jobs: Check your compost bins to see if there is any compost ready to use. Improve the drainage of heavy soils by incorporating plenty of organic matter. Top up raised beds with compost and good quality topsoil. Top-dress containers with fresh compost. If containers are full, remove the top 5cm of old compost and replace with new. Keep on top of weeding now the weather is warming up. Run a hoe through beds and borders. Apply weed killer to perennial weeds in paving and patios.

Eating out in #Herts

Late for Hermitage date because it's too much fun Booking a table and not turning up isn?t cool, we all know that.

prawns. Other choices included sweet chilli wings and peppercorn squid, all offering great taste.

Turning up so late that you may as well be on the next sitting is also simply not done.

When it came to the main I?m afraid it?s hands up - I went large and simply couldn?t handle it.

But how about getting there 10 minutes before your booking and then spending the next hour having such a great time that you take root in the bar? This happened on a recent visit to Hermitage Road in Hitchin and to be honest I spent the rest of the night on a guilt trip. Timing is everything for restaurateurs and when juggling diaries and popular nights to ensure the maximum return, a pain in the butt table of four that is having too much of a good time might be best avoided. Instead we were treated to a great night out with the emphasis on portion, good service and plenty of laughs. Since it opened, Hermitage Road has always been relied upon as both a great venue for good food and also for its lively ambience. It?s at the higher end of the scale of the #Herts shout-o-meter and that makes it perfect for a celebration or an evening where the drinks and the conversation

" I t ?s at t h e h i gh er en d of t h e scal e of t h e # H er t s sh out - o- m et er an d t h at m ak es i t per f ect f or a cel ebr at i on or an ev en i n g w h er e t h e dr i n k s an d t h e con v er sat i on w i l l f l ow ."

Glazed pork belly ribs come in either three or six.Three sounded mean. It wouldn?t have been. I opted for six and spent the rest of the night suffering meat sweats and also having the delight of two ribs and some fries (and slaw) for lunch the next day courtesy of a lovely doggie bag.

will flow. As already explained on our visit we took up our table almost an hour after the allotted time. The bar, you see, is a great space in itself and we?d already started to share a bottle before even thinking of food. When it came to dining it?s clear that taste and portions are both rated highly. Feeling ready to tackle anything I started with a Bao, delicious light steamed bun filled with tempura tiger

We were all fantastically fed with choices including burger and pork cheek. But none were fed as greatly as I, or as guilty that having taken our seats so late, I actually finished my meal almost 24 hours later?
