consistently good, healthy, modern European food and gluten free dining, all year-round.

We know that gluten free dining can be challenging, especially when you visit an unfamiliar location for the first time. Latest statistics reveal that one in 133 people suffer from Coeliac disease although most have not been diagnosed. Hertfordshire diners can now enjoy gluten free dining at its best. Set in the picturesque village of Braughing you will find the multi award-winning pub and dining rooms, The Golden Fleece. This renovated 17th century pub is featured in all the leading food guides, including The Michelin guide and is owned and run by Pete and Jess Tatlow. It is the perfect place to enjoy a pint of ale by the roaring log fire in the winter, glass of chilled wine on the terrace while the children

and I can see why. They also offer a children?s menu of home-cooked favourites with fresh and healthy ingredients. There is a choice of around 7 starters on the menu which all sounded very appetising; I had the Salt cod and lemon fritters served with their home-made saffron allioli (GF/DF) and my friend had the baked three bean cheese cake with oatcake crust served with a red pepper salsa (GF). Both dishes were presented beautifully and tasted delicious. Starters are around £6.95 each. For our mains, which there was a great selection to choose from, we had the Gressingham duck breast roasted (my favourite) served on petit pois, baby gem and smoked

lardons in a white wine cream sauce £18.95 and the Moroccan vegetable strudel with a tomato and smoked paprika sauce £15.95 both were scrumptious. The locals firm favourite is their Millionaires Bun, fillet steak in ciabatta with their hand cut chunky chips, homemade coleslaw & mixed salad leaves ? £17.55 (GF/DF) or you can go one better and indulge is their Billionaires Bun with twice as much steak. £23.75 (GF/DF) Chef Jess makes the most amazing homemade desserts, her gluten free shortbread with lemon posset and raspberries was mouth-watering! All puds are around £6.50. My friend enjoyed a platter of three cheeses £7.95

which they acquire from The Cheese Plate in Buntingford. As a free house they are able to bring you a wide range of real ales, beers, interesting and unique wines and spirits selected for all the right reasons; we settled for a crisp Chardonnay, Château St. Michelle from the USA to accompany our lunch. Their menus, local activities and special events, including the Fleece?s popular Tapas Night on the last Wednesday of the month, can be found on their website and social media pages. Now there is no reason why you can't enjoy eating out if you have coeliac disease or other special dietary requirements in Herts.

POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER FOR HERTS David Lloyd

The vital work of our volunteer police force The origin of Special Constables goes back much further than you think. In 1830, the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire put in place a group of men who could protect the towns and villages should unrest which had started in Kent spread north to the county. Fortunately they weren?t needed in the end, but this was the beginning of our volunteer police force. Today, these volunteers work alongside regular full time police officers, and have full police powers available to them ? including the power of arrest. They come from all walks of life and bring a range of skills to the policing family. They volunteer at least 16 hours a month and receive comprehensive training that enables them to be frontline police officers. As they build experience they can specialise in a number of areas and this is where they really come into their own. Only a few weeks ago, I was privileged to attend the early morning briefing of over 100 police officers at a special operation targeting modern slavery. I was very pleased to see Hertfordshire Constabulary and its partners taking this important crime as seriously as they did, and I was also impressed that it was an operation led by the Specials. Around 70 officers gave up their time on Saturday to take part in this operation which targeted human trafficking and modern slavery. Vehicles travelling across the border between Hertfordshire and London were stopped and anyone identified as

difficult piece of work which the team dedicated their entire weekend to. Several officers returned to the hospital the next day to help out having been stood down by the police, such was their commitment to supporting their NHS colleagues.

a potential victim of trafficking, slavery or any other kind of exploitation were dealt with at a site away from the policing operation. Welfare checks were conducted with them and information about their rights given. Our Special Constables led the way on this operation and were able to make a real difference to victims. You may also remember last year that the NHS suffered a crippling cyber-attack. Hospitals, including the Lister here in Hertfordshire, were severely disrupted ? in some cases working in the pitch black and resorting to paper record keeping. A group of our Hertfordshire Special Constables with specialist cyber and technology skills mobilised and were at the Hospital within 2 hours of the attack. The team were instrumental in helping the hospital to get its systems up and running. This was an incredibly

People with these skills are vital to our policing operation, considering a growing amount of crime in Hertfordshire is committed online. An organisation like Hertfordshire Constabulary benefits enormously from their experience and Special Constables (and their regular employers) gain from the fantastic training they receive and the extra transferable skills they can use in their everyday lives. That specific group of Specials who supported the Lister Hospital were honoured at an event celebrating Employer Supported Policing (ESP). The event showed businesses how they can help us, and their own workforce, to do more of this kind of work. It?s not just about frontline policing too ? we have many ways to volunteer across the organisation, from independent custody visitors who inspect the cells and check on the welfare of detainees, to our dog visitors who make sure our police animals are looked after and in the best possible shape (which of course they are). To get involved and support Hertfordshire Constabulary at my website ? www.hertscommissioner.org

Enjoy a real tonic with friends and book up for Gin on the River

In 2017, gin was the most popular drink in the UK. Its popularity has continued to rise but now G&T drinkers are looking for other ways to enjoy the tipple, and that?s where Gin on the River sails in. With Gin on the River you can experience a tranquil 3 hour cruise down the picturesque River Lee in Hertfordshire, testing out delicious new drinks on board the river boat. Starting in the historic town of Ware, you'll head towards Hertford passing through original working locks, returning to Ware late afternoon. Each boat trip holds 24 people so you can enjoy the intimacy of a private tour with the space to walk around the boat and even take a look up the top. On our trip we tasted 4 delicious gins, The Boatyard, Pinkster, Bareksten and Ski Gin. While we cruised down the River Lee we listened to more about the story

behind each gin, and what creates its unique taste and history. On board there is a huge range of Double Dutch tonics to try with flavours including Cranberry, Cucumber and Watermelon, Ginger Beer and traditional flavoured Indian tonic. If you still want to mix things up there are a selection of gin botanicals to try, so if you haven?t felt brave enough before, now is a great time to be adventurous! As the trip comes to an end it?s topped off with two gin and tonics

of your choice mixed by their specialist bartender. You can even keep the memories of the day by taking home your own Gin on the River glass and tote bag and purchase your new favourite drinks on board. The tour is a great way to find out more about your favourite drink and enjoy the beautiful views of Hertfordshire. It?s perfect for a birthday treat, hen do or just a day out to try out some new delicious gins! Find out more on the website www.ginontheriver.co.uk

Good news that food and drink is on the menu for businesses M y #Her t s by Dar r en Ist ed Not sure if you've heard it but here goes. How do you make a small fortune? Answer, quite simple, start with a large fortune and open a restaurant. Whether the times are good or bad, there has always been something of a risk about opening either a restaurant or running a pub with a good offering of food and drink. The current economic climate may not lend itself to optimism in any sphere of business, let alone food and drink - but it has been pleasing in the past month to witness no less than three openings at first hand in the #Herts area. Of course restaurants do open and close with great frequency but despite this it was particularly delightful to welcome the Ivy to St Albans. Those familiar with the history of St Albans eateries will know that The Ivy has opened in Verulum Road on the site of former restaurants and wine bars. It's a location which has previous for good times and it looks like the Ivy Collection will make the most of this with their latest offering. More of our dining experience at The Ivy later in this edition of #Herts but it's safe to say this will be somewhere in our county which won't just cater for special occasions, but also when you want to turn the dial up a notch on quality and imagination when it comes to an evening meal out. Also on the march (and boy are they on the march) is ACI, Anglia County Inns. The group which has been a wow in Norfolk with their Brancaster offering have already opened multiple venues in Herts including Hermitage Road, Hitchin, The Fox at Willian and Water Lane, Bishop's Stortford. In the space of just one week recently ACI were busy with two openings little more than five miles apart. Their takeover of Redcoats Farmhouse near Stevenage was cemented with the recent opening of a wedding barn which looks set to cater for some amazing celebrations.

Just seven days later ACI were at it again, this time reopening the Lytton Arms on the Knebworth estate. The pub had closed under tragic circumstances just over a year ago but the future is now brighter and with a comprehensive wet led offering allied to solid pub food, this is yet another distinct member of the ACI stable. All of this goes to show that despite uncertain times generally, if you have the confidence that you can offer what the customer wants in terms of experience and quality of food and drink, then there should be no bar to setting up something new. And of course it isn't just the glory of the openings which highlight the life in our #Herts food and drink offering. We all have favourite places to visit which have stood the test of time, which employ a great many people and have for years provided great places for fun and times. We say cheers to these - and look forward to more newcomers!

members of the Royal family to visit Hertfordshire and I accompany them on each visit as well as encouraging and assessing honours of those in the county. I do however have 49 wonderful Deputy Lieutenants who not only assist me in my duties but also are established in a number of Panels to advise and update me and thus The Queen on many local issues.

Who is the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire? What is his role? Who appoints him? How long does he serve in office? These are typical questions I receive everyday as few people have little or any idea at all about the role of the Lord-Lieutenant.

I am also Chairman of The Advisory Committee of the Magistrates in the county and I hold a number of Presidencies and Patronages.

I was appointed by Her Majesty The Queen on the advice from The Prime Minister on 4th August 2017 and all being well I remain in the role until my 75th birthday in 2028. The role of Lord-Lieutenant was established by King Henry VIII to maintain law and order and whilst The Lieutenancy retains close relations with the armed services -I am President of The Hertfordshire County Committee of The Army Reserve and Cadet Force - our responsibility for maintaining the military ended in the 19th century. My principal role is to maintain the

dignity of The Crown and to represent Her Majesty throughout the county. This includes presenting Queens Awards -for Voluntary Service and Enterprise/Industry and British Empire Medals amongst others as well as being Her Majesty?s eyes and ears in Hertfordshire. The Lieutenancy also arrange for

However it is the people of Hertfordshire-all 1.17 million-that really matter and I am meeting a variety of them around the county. It is my aim to try and engage with all the people of the county-or as many as I can-during my term in office. I have already met a great number of wonderful citizens of Hertfordshire through the large number of voluntary as well as business and service organisations in the county- the huge number of volunteers are the unsung heroes of Hertfordshire.

Warming up in search for dragonflies and damselflies in #Herts

Br oad Bodied Ch aser in GH w ildlif e gar den (c) Josh Ku bale Hert fordshire?s Dragons and Damsels Now is the perfect time to go in search of Hertfordshire and Middlesex?s most colourful residents ? dragonflies and damselflies! Spot t he difference The easiest way to tell the difference between dragonflies and damselflies is to check what position the wings are at rest ? dragonflies rest with their wings open while damselflies rest with their wings closed. If you are lucky enough to get up close then check the

eyes ? dragonflies eyes touch at the top of the head. W hen and where t o spot t hem An estimated 42 dragonfly and damselfly are native to Britain and of these, 26 species can be found in Hertfordshire and Middlesex. We are lucky enough to have many of these beautiful creatures at many of Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust?s nature reserves. Dragonflies and Damselflies can be seen best over the warm summer

months but can still be spotted as late as November. Adult dragonflies are most active between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, when temperatures are at their highest. Dragonflies are cold-blooded and must warm themselves before flying, so in Britain flight is generally restricted to sunny weather. Adult dragonflies and damselflies feed on small insects. Both groups hunt for their food on the wing - hovering, darting, chasing or just pursuing their quarry at amazing speed. Dragonflies

are some of the fastest insects in the world and can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, so head towards open water to spot them in action, hunting for insects. The Trust?s Amwell Nat ure Reserve near Ware is the top site for dragonflies and damselflies in Hertfordshire, with 21 Hertfordshire species being recorded here. The Dragonfly Trail on the reserve is open from May-October and offers fantastic opportunities to see these creature?s up close. Boardwalks stretch out over reedbeds, pools and ditches and a circular walk provides a chance to see orchids at close proximity too. Join us on 28t h and 29t h July at Panshanger Park in Hert ford for expert dragonfly walks at t he 2018 Hert s and Middlesex W ildlife Trust Fest ival of W ildlife, in associat ion wit h Hert s Nat ural Hist ory Societ y. The Festival, held in partnership with Tarmac, will celebrate the rich diversity of wildlife in Hertfordshire and Middlesex and will offer the opportunity to learn more about dragonflies and much more. Employees who pull a sickie may be dismissed for gross misconduct Tollers Employment team highlight this situation, which has been tried and tested in the Employment Tribunals. An employee who ?pulls a sickie?has acted dishonestly and is in fundamental breach of their employment contract. As such, it can be gross misconduct. Employers wishing to rely on this should make sure that the principle reasons for dismissal of such an employee, who has acted dishonestly in breach of their contract of employment, should be based on their conduct, not their capability to attend work. This is an important distinction, as it is their conduct that matters. An employee?s capability issues are irrelevant if they have committed a fundamental breach of their contract in acting so dishonestly. ?Pulling a sickie?could therefore amount to gross misconduct. W hat does t his mean for you? This is good news to employers

who become aware of employees who are exaggerating or falsely calling in sick to work. Employers may wish to implement certain measures that will help them gather evidence of such dishonest acts by employees who pull regular ?sickies?. As an employer you should make sure that you have evidence in support of the employee?s dishonesty. This could include, but is not limited to, surveillance or social media. An employer should

Austins help with charitable foundation In excess of £100,000 h as been r aised sin ce 2002 We believe in helping those most in need in our community, which is why we set up Austin?s Charitable Foundation. Each year, we?re delighted to be able to support a charity by donating a proportion of our annual profits along with money donated from sources including our funeral service CD and Christmas carol concert. Since we started the foundation in 2002, we?ve raised over £100,000 for charities such as the North Herts Samaritans, Cancer Hair Care, the Hertfordshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre and Road Victims Trust. Earlier this month, Austin?s was thrilled to hand over a cheque for £5,414.30 to our 2017 charity recipient Stand-By-Me. his local community-led service supports children and young people following a bereavement and helps them to understand and deal with grief. We?d love to raise as much money, if not more, for our 2018 charity,

If you?d like to help the local community in memory of a loved one, information on how to do this is available from all our funeral offices and at Harwood Park Crematorium. Apprent iceships are a vit al way t o build st rong, skilled workforces and grow Hert fordshire?s economy, t he MP for Hit chin and Harpenden t old employers at an apprent iceship conference. Around 65 employers and training providers attended Apprenticeships Work, run by Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Hertfordshire Growth Hub and the University of Hertfordshire at the Fielder Centre on Monday 11th June. Delegates heard how in Hertfordshire, FE Colleges, private training providers and the University of Hertfordshire are working together to provide apprenticeship ?pathways?. These provide a seamless transition from when an apprentice first joins a business through to degree level apprenticeships. Mr Afolami said: "Hertfordshire is the county of opportunity and we must develop a regionalised economy

outside of M25 with a highly skilled workforce. In order to increase the number of apprenticeships, businesses need to spread the word about the good quality skills apprentices can bring. "I am MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, an affluent area, where I have found some cultural resistance to apprenticeships. Schools can also experience this when talking to parents, their customers, and we must help shift this view."

of the apprenticeship programmes it has to offer. We are keen to encourage more employers to invest in new talent as well as helping its existing employees to progress and realise their full potential. This, in turn, will maximise the impact on their business." Julie Newlan, Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire, said its degree apprenticeship programme was a vital component of its offer to businesses.

Hertfordshire LEP Deputy Chair Adrian Hawkins said: "Investing in people and skills is the foundation of our Strategic Economic Plan for Hertfordshire and is one of the main productivity drivers for the Local Industrial Strategy.

"The university is passionate about apprenticeships, both as an education provider and as one of Hertfordshire?s largest employers. This has strengthened our understanding and enabled us to act as a critical friend to other employers.

"The county can be justifiably proud

programme has undergone rapid expansion in the past year. We now run 13 different programmes and anticipate enrolling 200 apprentices this September. We do not work in isolation but work alongside other education providers to enable employees to progress and develop. It is this joined up approach in Hertfordshire that is paramount to its success." Cathy Strachan, HR Manager ? Learning and Development, MBDA, said apprenticeships are ?absolutely necessary?to build and retain the skills they need and are seen as a ?long term investment?, with apprentices ?contributing to the business from day one?. Will Dodwell, who started his apprenticeship with MBDA in

September, said: "I am 19 and I work on a ÂŁ11m programme." Malcolm Mackenzie, set up Hello Flexibles, a plastic packaging supplier, in 2014. After hearing from a young couple who were struggling to start out with ÂŁ70k of student debt, Malcolm told the audience he was keen to do something to help invest in youth. After approaching Hertfordshire Growth Hub, he was signposted to the University of Hertfordshire where he found out about degree apprenticeships, leading him to taking on his first apprentice Charlie Luff. "We had six or seven highly employable young people apply for that one degree apprenticeship. My question is, what happened to the rest of them who applied?

"A degree apprenticeship gives young people a start, four years?work experience, a degree and no debt. And from an employer?s point of view, apprentices deliver business today." Apprentice Charlie Luff said: "This industry experience will put me ahead of other graduates, while earning a salary and getting my degree paid for, as well as seeing first-hand how a small business grows." Anna Morrison, Director, Amazing Apprenticeships, encouraged employers to put social mobility on their agenda, and Charlotte Hughes, Chair, East of England Young Apprentice Ambassadors Network spoke about its mission to encourage more young people to consider apprenticeships as a viable and valued career path.

Apprent ice case st udy: Hello Flexibles Malcolm MacKenzie started Hello Flexibles in January 2017, to supply flexible plastic film to UK and European food manufacturers and produce packers. Working with these manufacturers and the UK retailers his aim is to build a plastic business that extends product shelf life, reduces food waste and promotes the reduction in unnecessary plastic and grows awareness of recycling packaging. His aim has always to been to give something back, and being acutely aware of the student debt many young people start working life with he wanted to invest in youth. Initially they looked to sponsor a student through university but via the Hertfordshire Growth Hub he was

diverted into a different way of support, by the degree apprenticeship scheme with the University of Hertfordshire. The scheme is phenomenal as was his journey to recruit they first degree apprentice. He was guided through the process by the University team. Having placed an advert on the Government website for a degree apprentice role in the business the university sent a number of CV?s which were whittled down to 10. Out of the 10 candidates 7 were very highly employable ? he chose one, Charlie (pictured left and speaking to the LEP conference). Within two weeks of his interview Charlie was on a degree course and had a job for the next 4 years. However, the bitter sweet element is the other six highly employable young candidates were not on a degree course and did not have a job. As Malcolm explains: "A degree apprenticeship is a way for a young person to get a fully funded degree course (90% by the Government / 10% by the employer), be in full time paid employment which results in a degree qualification, an apprenticeship and a step ahead of the other graduates as they will have four years work experience. It is a tough way to get a degree and takes real dedication but the rewards and benefits are fantastic. "If you are an employer you have the gift in your hands to give the leaders of tomorrow the start in life they deserve. I would urge you to take a look at apprenticeship schemes. The University of Hertfordshire Degree Apprentice is one scheme but there are pre degree level 2 ? 5 apprenticeships to consider also. Please contact the University for further information, alternatively I would be happy to introduce you to the teams malcolm@helloflexibles.co.uk "

Bath and kitchen range expansion for Henlow Building Supplies Henlow Building Supplies is a family run business based on Stratton Business Park in Biggleswade. The company started life in 1978 with humble beginnings as a small hardware and ironmongery shop operating out of Henlow High Street. The team grew over time and relocated, moving to another site in Henlow before settling in their current location in Biggleswade. Over the past 40 years the friendly staff have followed the family?s traditional values of personal service and knowledgeable advice which makes them a popular local business for the people of Bedfordshire. This year marks big changes for the company as they expand their

range of bathroom and kitchen products with a complete showroom refurbishment.

The upstairs of the store has been opened up to include a top of the range kitchen display and new model showers such as the modern Coram enclosures. The

The company is branching out into kitchen supplies this year and the new range will feature the innovative brand ClicBox from BA Clic Components, a range of kitchen cabinets which click together in less than 30 seconds. ACI lead the launch for revamped Lytton Arms Award winning hospitality group Anglian Country Inns (ACI) are proud to have opened The Lyt t on Arms, the iconic real ale pub situated in the historical village of Knebworth in north Hertfordshire. This free-of-tie pub overlooks the stunning Knebworth Park estate and is the 9th in ACI?s diverse hospitality estate. The Nye family has strong ties to the pub, with (Uncle) Steve Nye having built up a national reputation for real ale while he ran the pub in the 1990s. Whilst the pub has been closed recently, the Nye family is looking to restore the pub to the centre of the local community with a big focus on the quality and range of beers with wholesome food and a warm welcome to boot. James Nye, Group Managing Director said ?When we heard about the opportunity of The Lyt t on Arms, it was very hard not to be excited. I had my first job scrubbing dishes in the kitchen and it is a pub very close to our family. Whilst wet led pubs may have been struggling during recent years, we feel there is a great opportunity to make the most of the free-of-tie position to curate an exciting collection of real ales, craft beers and ciders, alongside an authentic food offer. We are very excited to be writing the next chapter for The Lyt t on Arms and very much look forward to serving the local community. This sort of pub is very

Turn up the heat outside Put conservat ory plant s out side It can be difficult to judge but as the warmer months approach then you should be able to place conservatory plants outside without fear of any damage from colder weather.

Wat er when needed Watering is of course essential and you should pay special attention to tubs and new plants if they show any sign of being dry. However gardeners must also make sure that they are water-wise and do this without waste of this precious resource.

Pamper your pond Now is the time to turn your attention to your pond. In the drier months you should clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds. You should also make sure that it is at the correct level and that it is topped up regularly.

Order your cat alogues You may have barely begun to appreciate the garden this year but it is already time to start thinking about 2019. It?s an exciting time for some gardeners and a chance to look ahead but you should really be considering ordering catalogues for next year?s spring-flowering bulbs.

Give t he lawn a feed It?s something that is very often overlooked but in the summer months you should give the lawn a quick-acting summer feed. This should especially be done if you have not given it a spring feed

Do t he deadheading It?s an art form in itself and one which comes into it?s own now as you should be deadheading. A vital part of gardening, deadheading of bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials helps to ensure continuous flowering and therefore a great display.

Look aft er your woodwork Like any part of the garden items such as woodwork also appreciate a little care. If you have the chance give woodwork a lick of paint or preserver, while the weather is dry.

W ilkest ock Aug 31 Sept 3 Yes it started small (just 30 people in a field!) and has grown like many other festivals, however, the home grown ethos and donating all profits to charity has never changed. What started off as a place for the various bands in a family to perform some 10 years ago has snowballed massively, through huge generosity of many people?s time and skills to create something many thought would never be possible. Back in 2007 with a small stage made out of milk crates borrowed from the local milkman and some scraps of plywood the Wilkestock era was created. Many years followed, cobbling

together equipment and people?s time all on a shoestring has created something incredibly unique to the UK festival scene. Gone are the milk crates, but the enthusiasm and passion strongly thrives more than ever. In 2018, they have sold out of early bird tickets and are gearing up for an 11th year. And no wonder there is such anticipation as the high energy of The Fratellis will be headlining. They are again donating all of the profits to charities close to their family?s hearts,

Leukaemia Research (Beating Blood Cancer) and Keswick Mountain Rescue.

Dining out in #Herts

Quality from The Ivy arrives in St Albans The Ivy?

flavour and even a little showmanship.

In St Albans? The idle gossip and chat surrounding the opening of this new member of the Ivy Collection family suggested it might take at least three months to book a table. In my book failure to get a table simply means I?m going to eat elsewhere - exclusivity doesn?t leave me wanting to come back for more. Thankfully we were able to experience the Ivy quickly and boy were we glad, there aren?t many other substitutes in Herts I would have settled for on the night that we dined there. Its location in Verulam Road is in a superb part of town, unsurprisingly there are a number of similar offerings close by, but The Ivy has moved into what were two former dining premises and has taken their provenance to another level. Two people greeting you on arrival at the door? Some people might find that a little too much - me, I like the feel that my custom is welcomed and that effort is being put into my visit. We arrived bang on time and although we would have liked a pre drink, there wasn?t enough room at the bar so it was straight to the table and into the menus. When it comes to the big menu debate, and believe me scratch the surface of diners and it?s worse than Brexit or God - I?m all for take a sneaky

My starter of scallops on a pea puree was perfectly cooked and the flavours complemented well, but the sea bass mains was an even greater delight - simple presentation, simply cooked. Just easy.

pre-look. There are those who look aghast when you confess to having gone online prior to a meal out and done some homework but I like to know what I?m getting into. Of course if it comes to a pre-recorded Match of the Day or Test highlights then surprise is of the essence. If you know the score, it?s going to be a bore. With the Ivy, especially as it was a new opening I was keen to get an insight. As part of the collection the Ivy St Albans doesn?t stray too far from it?s standard menu - and while at first glance it may appear quite large and not out of the ordinary, there is lurking within a real keen eye on

The lack of a fully loaded meal and the need to add additional veg can be an annoyance - but any upset at the inconvenience was forgotten by the creamed spinach. And so to pudding and the meal ended with a flourish. It?s where The Ivy is adding a little theatre and if a meal isn?t memorable, what chance do you have of seeing the punters again. My chocolate Bombe was delicious and just made for the Boomerang filming generation. A next door apple tarte with flaming sauce was equally eye-catching. It was a clever end to an evening of quality and positive talking points. Service was excellent and unhurried, and although I know the menu inside out, have no fear I will be back again.
