Summer in Stevenage will be buzzing with events and new shops By Town cent re manager Tina Benson We?re so looking forward to the summer in Stevenage and already the town is buzzing with community events and new shops opening. A huge welcome to Shakeaway selling milkshakes and smoothies on Queensway, as well as Mini Sam off licence at the Forum, and welcome back to the revamped Greggs store in the Town Square. To tempt you into town further, we?re hosting a continental street market along Queensway from 4-7 July, with food from around the world. We?ve a fabulous array on offer including Greek Souvlaki, Hazel?s German BBQ, Oriental Charcoal Grill, Salsa Fusions, the Great British Cheese Company, The Finest Fudge company and much more. Drop by daily, 10am to 6pm. We?d love you all to come along to raise money for a brilliant cause, the first Saturday in July, when there is a special charity event for Make A Wish. There will be stalls, an inflatable slide, rides, and a golf game, on 7 July, 10am to 6pm, in the Town Square. It?s all to raise money to help make dreams come true for seriously ill children. Parking is free at St George?s multi-storey that day

too, from 8am to 6pm. You may have spotted some fencing around the fountain and clock tower. It?s all because we?re replacing some broken slabs and cleaning the fountain pump to ensure our landmarks stay looking good. We?ll be doing a few more improvements around the town later this year ahead of our exciting major regeneration with renowned international developer Mace. I?ll let you know when I have all the details. We welcome suggestions from

other community groups who would like to put on events, so if you have one in mind please email: tcm@stevenage.gov.uk. Or if you have other ideas you can always contact me via social media @lovesteveneagetc on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. www.stevenagetowncentre.com www.st evenaget owncent re.com

SBC announce £45m programme to refurbish 4,000 homes in flats Council invest s in repairs t o 550 blocks of flat s Stevenage Borough Council has announced a £45million programme to refurbish 4,000 homes in hundreds of blocks of flats across Stevenage. Contractors Mulalley and Wates Living Space have been appointed for a five-year programme to carry out essential repairs to 550 blocks of flats, starting later this year. Work will vary from block to block, but could include roofs, windows, structural repairs, rewiring, fencing, paving, signs and some redecoration of communal

areas. This is part of the council?s plan to invest £1bn over the next 30 years to ensure existing properties are safe, sustainable and warm and build quality new council homes for local people. The council has already invested £64million on internal work to council homes in the last seven years, including renewing kitchens and bathrooms where needed, to bring them up to a decent standard. Councillor Jeannette Thomas, Executive Member for Housing, Health and Older People, said:

?This is a major programme which will prolong the life of these homes, and ensure good quality housing for local people. We are pleased to have two experienced contractors to undertake this work to make these flats fit for the future.? Further information is available online: stevenage.gov.uk/council-housing

Stevenage welcomes new mayor as Margaret Notley takes office The Mayor of Stevenage for 2018/19, Councillor Margaret Notley, has taken office.

her year as Mayor, and hopes to hold a charity concert and a civic or community service. She is also looking forward to attending the Pride of Stevenage awards, and is planning to hold a fundraising curry night and a Christmas carol service.

Margaret came to Stevenage with her parents in 1956, and lived in Longmeadow originally. She married David Notley in 1975 and moved to Symonds Green. Daughter Louisa was born in 1978 and son Peter in 1981, and both went to Woolenwick schools where Margaret is a Governor. She was first elected as a councillor for Symonds Green ward and served from 1992-1996. After her husband passed away she took a step back from politics until she was elected as a councillor for Woodfield in 2000. She has served on many committees including as vice-chair of the Community Select Committee. As chair of Symonds Green Community Association, Margaret has been active in her local area for many years. She is also a strong supporter of the town?s international links, as a member of the Stevenage-Ingelheim-Autun Twinning Association and the Stevenage-Kadoma Link Association.

During her year in office, Margaret will be supporting the charities Carers in Hertfordshire, Stevenage District Scouts and TRACKS autism. The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Simon Speller.

Most of her working life was in the jewellery trade, starting with making jewellery in Hatton Garden, London, and finishing in a jewellery shop in Stevenage Old Town. Time for a little extra sunshine at Parkrun Stevenage parkrun ? Event #107 Well this morning began with a bit of a drama as your RD realised just before 8:30 that we had an "electronic kit not where it should be" situation. And the bag containing the stopwatches and scanners wasn't anywhere between the car boot and the finish area! They were located at home, so a quick dash back to Panshanger ensued and the timers were on site 5 minutes or so after 9am. So a massive thank you to fellow RDs for getting the rest of the team sorted while I was retrieving the kit, and apologies to the runners for the ten minutes or so delay to the start today. Fortunately it's June not January and a gorgeous morning so hopefully it wasn't too much of an inconvenience! And well done to the runner who caught me with a well-delivered "have you got the time?" and had me looking at my watch as he neared the end of the first lap. Excellent timing sir, and got the bite it deserved! Big thanks to the whole team of volunteers who did a tremendous job as always. Eleanor and Stella were first timers on

scanning today and produced a perfect set of scanning files so well done to them first time on that role. A special mention and congratulations to Jude Barton, Carolina Lopez and Alastair Moye who all ran their 50th parkruns this morning. Well done also to the 13 people attending their first ever parkrun this morning. We hope you really enjoyed it and this is the first of many. We had one issue with the results file where runner number A4384903 owned by Helen Holden was scanned in both 40th and 182nd positions across two different scanners. I've removed the 40th position result in order to be able to save and progress the results, but can Helen or the person she was with please drop us an email with the correct other runner number and confirm the correct order please and we'll get those tidied up for you. On to the summary: This week 277 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 27 were first timers and 51 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 23 different

clubs took part. The event was made possible by 18 volunteers: Laura KIMPTON - Ems SOUTHERINGTON - Ken JUDE - Helen MOYE - Chloe MARSHALL - James MARSHALL - Esperanza CASTRO Wendy BREWSTER - Paul BREWSTER Stella GARRETT - Tony RANDFIELD - Joe COLGAN - Richard GLAISTER - Paul JENNINGS - James ASTLEY - Alan FORD - Shelbe MOONBEAM - Eleanor DOSWORA Stevenage parkrun started on 28th May 2016. Since then 4,963 participants have completed 26,325 parkruns covering a total distance of 131,625 km, including 5,930 new Personal Bests. If you are interested in volunteering, please cast your eyeballs over the roster page: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/ stevenage/futureroster/ and email the team at stevenagehelpers@parkrun.com

Ways to keep the ashes of a loved one Wit h t h e popu lar it y of cr em at ion st or age can be var ied With cremation on the increase, there are now many different ways to keep a loved one?s ashes. We look at some of the options?

made to fit into your home. You could have a pretty floral urn, a teardrop-shaped urn, a wooden heart, a box decorated with dried leaves or a fabric urn made from wool and embroidered with a name plate.

Int erment and burial The traditional storage for ashes is an urn or casket that can be buried in a cemetery or perhaps in a natural burial ground. Today you can choose one made from a range of materials including banana leaf, seagrass, oak and bamboo. There?s even one made of corn starch that decomposes when it?s underground. Wat er urns If you?d like to have a water burial for your loved one, you can get biodegradable water urns made from natural materials such as recycled paper. They?re designed to float on the water for long enough to say your goodbyes before they gently sink. Scat t er t ubes Some people prefer to scatter ashes in

a place that had a special meaning to the person they?ve lost ? perhaps a favourite woodland walk or a clifftop overlooking the sea. Scatter tubes come with special easy-to-scatter tabs and can be recycled or composted afterwards. They can also be personalised with a picture that celebrates your loved one.

Rain, snow, sun ? urns and caskets made from natural materials will withstand the elements to stay with you as each season passes. Creating the perfect Espresso Martini Lite We asked On The Green to come up with the recipe for this perfect summer cocktail which combines the best of cold drink, booze and a caffeine hit!

How t o make:1. Prepare a cafetière of coffee (or instant, whichever is your preference) and allow it to go cold

Our version is a lite version so has no cream in it, making it more guilt free that some of the other full fat recipes.

2. Ice a martini glass to chill the glass

Ingredient s:25ml vodka 25ml kahlua 12.5ml white vermouth Cold coffee Coffee beans and ice cubes to decorate

3. Fill the cocktail shaker (or anything with a water proof seal lid) 4. Poor all the ingredients into the shaker 5. Shake well for 10 seconds 6. Strain into the chilled glass (tea strainer or similar fine meshed strainer works if you don?t have the cocktail shaker set)

7. Decorate with coffee beans and a couple of ice cubes 8. Drink 9. Repeat (as many times as you want to but please drink responsibly!) If you don?t have the ingredients and kit to make at home, you can always come to ours and we?ll make it for you.? All t he best , On The Green
