CHAIR NOTES
Jenny Horsfield
Welcome everyone to today’s game and a very warm welcome to our visitors London Seaward. We are thrilled to be back at the Abbey Stadium again!
It’s a very exciting month for the Women’s team as this is the first of three games we have here at the Abbey.
A special welcome to all the local girls grassroots clubs and local schools who are in attendance today. It’s great to see so many of you enjoying football. We hope you enjoy the game, make lots of noise and hope the game inspires you to one day be playing here at the Abbey!
As we are now in the final third of the season, I reflect back on the progress we have made so far this season integrating the Women’s team into the Club, strengthening the squad and trying to support the team to grow and inspire the next generation.
This progress would not be possible without the support from our fantastic sponsors, volunteers, owners/staff at the Club as well as our supporters. If it’s your first visit to the Abbey Stadium - welcome and to those of you who attend our games regularly, thank you for your continued support.
Our sponsor for today’s game is Jordan Bird Data Engineering - a great supporter of the team whose contribution has made a difference to the things we have been able to achieve on and off the pitch.
Have a lovely afternoon and enjoy the game!

MANAGER’S NOTES Darren Marjoram
all but could not break them down. Both teams rarely fail to score so I’m expecting an exciting game again today!
The last fixture for us was a home game against title challengers AFC Wimbledon, and I was very pleased with a large portion of our efforts. The two goals from Sarah Wiltshire, especially the second, were of outstanding quality but also I was pleased with our resilience to come back just before half time to make it 2-2 just minutes after the visitors took the lead. This has been something in the past that we knew we needed to improve on, so I was happy to see us respond so well to a setback. AFC Wimbledon did dominate large spells of the second half and in truth we ran out of steam chasing another equaliser, but I was reasonably pleased with our performance levels against one of the best teams in tier 4.
I’d like to start by welcoming our visitors, London Seaward, to The Abbey this afternoon. It promises to be a fantastic game with London Seaward in great form, and that’s no surprise with Dan McKimm as manager. He has continued the progress they made from last season and it’s no surprise that they find themselves in the top 3 at the business end of the season. Dan deserves a lot of plaudits for what he continues to achieve with the resources he has, and he certainly has my utmost respect.
This fixture last time saw London Seaward come out 2-1 winners after we took the lead and looked reasonably comfortable up until they scored their equaliser just before half time. The second half saw the hosts dominate more and after scoring their second goal early in the second half from the penalty spot we gave our
It’s fantastic to have another opportunity to play at The Abbey in front of hopefully a large crowd, and the importance of this is never lost on me, the staff or the players. We want to inspire the next generation, and to create a desire for local girls to represent Cambridge United, and will do all we can to make them dream of playing at The Abbey in the future. Equally we want to grow the number of people coming to watch the Women’s team and enjoying the quality of football we have to offer, so we truly value every person who comes to watch and support today and every game. Everyone loves the atmosphere and excitement that a crowd can generate too, and it definitely has a positive effect on our players so please get behind them and make as much noise as you can! It would be great to achieve our goals together, United in Endeavour.
Thank you for your support, and enjoy the game.
OPPOSITION London Seaward
London Seaward is an independent Women’s Club based in East London. The Club is built on values of inclusivity and fairness, and to ensure players voices are heard.
The Club are determined to show you don’t have to be someone else’s ‘Ladies’ or ‘Womens’ team to be successfully in the FAWNL.
The Anchors are creating quite a storm on social media by pushing important conversations which
impact female players across the game, whether it’s about pitch access or kit, they are a voice for all. Coming a long way since the turbulent times of summer 2021 and their break from Leyton Orient, they sit comfortably at 3rd in the League. With no game last weekend and having secured a draw against title contenders AFC Wimbledon under the lights in their last game, they will be coming into the match today with rested legs and high expectations.
ONES TO WATCH
LUCY COCKERILL
CENTRE BACK — NO 5
Having come across to join the Anchors from previous league opponents Kent United at the start of this season, this small but mighty player is not one to be under-estimated. Cockerill represented Kent United since she was 11 years old and was a part of the Club’s five consecutive promotion to the FAWNL.
After taking a few months to fully find her feat in the squad, she is now producing top performance after top performance. Nicknamed ‘sensational’ by her teammates, Lucy is exactly who you want to be shoring up your backline.
The 23-year-old captained her previous side during their very tough season last year, so knows how to perform under pressure and continues to drive her teammates forward. She is without doubt a future Seaward captain in the making.
MAISY CANNON
MIDFIELDER — NO 14
Maisy is a sturdy central midfielder who has come through the ranks at the Club, joining the set-up in the summer of 2018. After playing a few seasons for the reserves and winning Mangers and Players Player of the Year, in October 2021, the newly promoted manager Dan McKimm spotted her talent and brought her fully into the First Team squad. Since then, she has been an integral part of the team, on-and-off the pitch.
Travelling from the South Coast to games for almost four seasons, she isn’t shy of graft and will give any midfielder a run for their money when it comes to work-rate. With a new-found confidence, her performances are speaking for themselves.
“This season has been one of the most memorable for me. I play because I love football but this season I’ve been playing with a group of
SAM LANZA STRIKER — NO 10
Age is but a number for Lanza. Quick feet, brilliant movement, and a work rate that would put most young players to shame. Sam was a new signing this season and has made a big impact in unlocking the Anchors winning ways this season. With 8 goals under her belt and many more to come, Sam is without doubt one to watch.
This Venezuelan international has several international appearances to her name and not resting on her laurels, she is here to push the Club to the next level.
“Ever since joining, I feel very much at home and I love the way the team is structured and where it is going. The dedication and effort for every single person in this team is admirable. Feels
people I adore and admire at a Club that I feel so connected to.
“We’ve been playing really well this season and I think a lot of that goes down to the hard work of the whole squad, not even just this season but also going back to last season.
“I hope we can carry that on today, get another 3 points and really enjoy the occasion at an amazing venue.
good to represent an independent club doing so well.
“I would love to continue to push myself personally and professionally within the team and to help it push for that tier 3 promotion. Would be amazing to be a part of such achievement.”
