CHAIR NOTES

Jenny Horsfield

Welcome everyone to today’s game and a very warm welcome to our visitors Actonians.

This is our second game at the Abbey in a week, with the team sealing victory over our local Cambridge City rivals on Tuesday to win the Invitation Cup 3-1. It was a brilliant evening and a fantastic team effort with some outstanding goals. It was testament to how much the team has improved over the course of this season. I would also like to give a shout out to our Development Squad who won the Junior Invitation Cup earlier this month. We will proudly be displaying two trophies from the Women’s section this season! Well done to all.

The recent good performances reflect the enormous amount of hard work, on and off the pitch by all those involved. On the pitch today, you will see players including Policewomen, PE teachers, Scientists, Students, Educators and so many other things to so many people, and they work tirelessly to be the best athletes and footballers they can be. For our players and coaching staff, today is not just a game of football, but a testament to all of that hard work and collective spirit. We are immensely proud of them.

I can’t believe it’s the final game of the season – it has gone so quickly. The progress we have made since the start of the season and our performances during the last third are especially pleasing with the squad really putting in some great performances. It stands us in good stead to build upon for next season.

This progress would not be possible without the support from our fantastic sponsors, volunteers, owners/staff at the Club as well as our supporters. If it’s your first visit to the Abbey

Stadium today - welcome and to those of you who attend our games regularly, thank you for your continued support.

We hope you can hang around at the end of the game and get an autograph or photo with your favourite player. We will also be making our end of season presentation to the players and you are welcome to join us.

Our sponsors for today’s game are Elglaze and Glebe Farm, both are great supporters of the Women’s team and their contributions have made a difference to the things we have been able to achieve.

Finally, to all the young girls here this afternoon, dream big. Playing at the Abbey can be a reality. If you can see it, you can be it. Have a lovely afternoon, enjoy the game and look forward to seeing you next season!

MANAGER’S NOTES Darren Marjoram

Firstly I would like to start by welcoming today’s visitors, Actonians, to the Abbey Stadium. Danny, his staff and players have had another great season and could still finish third, which is testament to the great work he has consistently delivered.

It has been fantastic to see our team recently show some of the form that we know they are capable of. This was particularly demonstrated in our last two games at the Abbey, where we drew 2-2 with London Seaward and then winning the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup with a 3-1 victory over Cambridge City.

I thought that we could have got more against London Seaward, especially given that we had more than one really good chance in the last 10 minutes, but it was encouraging to see us really push a good side to the limit.

It has been a really busy week for us which started with the last gasp 3-2 win over Chesham on Sunday. It was no surprise to anyone that it was Sarah Wiltshire who found that bit of quality to win us the game, after we almost threw it away by squandering a 2-0 lead.

The resilience and responsibility shown by the players in that game was particularly pleasing as it is all too easy to feel like nothing will go your way when the chips are down. The best teams at those moments roll up their sleeves and battle, and that’s exactly what we did last Sunday.

Then, on Tuesday night with only a day’s rest in-between games, we played Cambridge City here at the Abbey, minus Rachel Kosky and Ella Marden who were ruled out with injury and illness respectively.

We largely controlled the game for the first 60 minutes, although we played at a slow pace for a large part of that. However, we did score twice in that time - a close range finish from Sarah Wiltshire and an absolute stunner from Sammy Edgar into the top corner.

An unfortunate own goal from a corner gave Cambridge City some hope, but after soaking up a bit of pressure we finished the game in style when Niamh Day ran from our own half before firing into the far top corner to see us lift the Invitation Cup.

“THE RESILIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY SHOWN BY THE PLAYERS IN THAT GAME WAS PARTICULARLY PLEASING AS IT IS ALL TOO EASY TO FEEL LIKE NOTHING WILL GO YOUR WAY WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN”

We have been badly hampered by injuries to key players in the last few weeks, so it has been very encouraging to see the whole squad step up and produce some good performances to get results. I feel we have the basis of a really good squad for next season and with a few additions, I would like to think we will continue to improve.

Every team has injuries to players through the season, and our list has been growing for some time, but this is when you see who steps up, takes their opportunity and shows the right attitude to keep battling through. I have been really pleased to see the positive mentality of our players.

So, with this being the last game of this season, I would like to thank the Women’s Board and everyone at the Club for their support throughout the season. I would also like to thank all our sponsors and to everyone who has been to watch and support the team.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the staff and players that have represented the Club this season in an exemplary manner.

I hope you all enjoy your afternoon, and please get behind the team as we try to get a result for one last time this season. United, we can achieve our goals together.

Cambridge United Women lifted the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup on Tuesday night after a hard-fought but comprehensive 3-1 victory over Cambridge City...

Sarah Wiltshire’s first half goal gave the U’s the lead heading into the break, before a superb

strike from Sammy Edgar early in the second half put Darren Marjoram’s side firmly in control.

City pulled one back just after the hour mark to make for a nervy finish, but Niamh Day made sure of the result deep into added time with a third goal for the U’s that sent the Abbey wild.
