BEHIND THE

A

BADGE

s with most other insignia for organizations, every element of Chicago City SC’s crest is a result of a deliberate choice with great significance behind it. For Chicago City SC’s badge, the story begins over a decade ago when Club founder Nick Mulvaney was appointed

Director of Coaching of Chicago Lakefront Attack Soccer Club. New to the City of Chicago, Nick quickly immersed himself into the culture, and tells the story of knocking on many unanswered doors throughout the City while trying to understand the youth soccer landscape and build relationships to help elevate the club.

CHICAGO CITY Chicago City SC was important to the branding of the club as many youth clubs throughout the Chicagoland area had the name Chicago in front of their name but operated in the suburbs. Chicago City would not only become a club in the city but for the city. It was also a tough decision between Soccer Club and Football Club but because soccer was the American term used, SC was added.

SKYLINE As far as the elements of the crest go, the Chicago skyline is not only one of the most iconic and recognizable but also extremely dynamic. The skyline view changes based on where people are in the city, and so Chicago City can be a point of unification for all 77 neighborhoods.

CHICAGO FLAG Another iconic and recognizable element to the crest is the Chicago flag. Chicago City’s goal is to celebrate all the different components of the city that make it uniquely Chicago. As the goal for the organization was to become the club for the city it was key to ensure it represented the whole city which the white bars do along with the two blue bars that represent the two prominent bodies of water. The red stars within the flag on the crest commemorate four of the greatest events in the city’s history and Chicago City SC wants to build on the work of those who have come before them.

2

The intentionality and purposefulness of the Chicago City SC crest translate into every project that the club takes on. The badge itself serves as a reminder of the importance of that value.

THE LION AND LIONNESS These are a nod to the famous lion sculptures on Michigan Avenue that act as guardians of the city. Mulvaney saw that as a perfect allegory of his desire to have Chicago City SC continue to push the boundaries within the soccer industry by representing Chicago in a positive manner.

MESSAGE FROM OUR

I

FOUNDER

would like to thank every player, coach, parent, and partner of past and present who have played a part in the growth of Chicago City Soccer Club. We set out to build a soccer organization that represented our amazing City and all neighbourhoods throughout. It has been a unique journey that continues into this summer as we kick off our inaugural seasons with the United Soccer Leagues (USL). Our Women’s and Men’s teams along with our Academy will be the first teams to represent our City in the league.

“OUR WOMEN’S AND MEN’S TEAMS ALONG WITH OUR ACADEMY WILL BE THE FIRST TEAMS TO REPRESENT OUR CITY IN THE LEAGUE” As we gear up for an exciting few months ahead, we will be welcoming many new families into our soccer community as player assessments are carried out throughout the month of May. We know this time of year can put a lot of stress on our families and we want to help support that as best we can by letting our members know there will always be a place in our club for their child, and through the coach assessments players will be assigned the appropriate level of team for this time. Chicago City has always been and will continue to be a club that puts the long term development of our players and coaches first. We look forward to connecting with you all this spring season and we hope you get the chance to come out and support our newly pre professional teams, build a bigger soccer community within our City while enjoying an affordable family experience. Once again thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen, and GO CITY!!!!!!!

CITY CARE MODEL

or Chicago City SC, CARE is more than just an acronym. It’s a guidepost philosophy that the club puts into action and draws upon to help determine its decisions. CARE encompasses everything that Chicago City values and hopes to accomplish through its entire structure. CARE is on its most basic level an acronym spelling out exactly what Chicago City cares about. Those areas of importance are:

COMMUNITIES ATHLETES RELATIONSHIPS ETHOS Putting those values into practice isn’t as simple as forming an acronym, however. At the same time, though, Chicago City has developed a curriculum for individuals and families throughout the greater Chicago area to enhance the quality of their lives through soccer. Chicago City CEO Nick Mulvaney, along with his coaching staff, redeveloped the vision for the club exemplifying the CARE Model that has been a major part of their DNA since day one, in 2013. “Access and participation in Chicago’s diverse out-of-school opportunity ecosystem must be equitable, not equal, across race, gender identities, age, disability, immigration status, income, neighborhood, and other identities,” Mulvaney said. “This will result in all young people – as well as their families, mentors, and caring adults – leveraging community assets and the city’s resources to build positive futures for all.” Events are important parts of the CARE program for Chicago City. In the past these have included Free programming through Mini City, Chicago Stars (for children with disabilities), Street Soccer tournaments, high school pre-season camps, and City in the Community clinics for both coaches and players. As part of further enriching communities, Chicago City has partnered with local nonprofit organizations, parks, and schools. In the future, Chicago City plans to offer a youth

6

sports symposium to build ongoing resources in communities to support their programs. Communities are all about relationships and Chicago City takes care to ensure individuals do not get lost in the crowd. This happens through City’s College Player Pathway, mentorship opportunities, and scholarship projects. All the best intentions suffer if the people behind the programs do not have the right expertise and qualifications, however. That’s why Chicago City invests in its staff to not only communicate the importance of CARE but to ensure they are capable of delivering a firstclass experience for its members. As an example of this investment, Chicago City has supplied its coaching staff with mental health first aid certification. With this training, City staff can identify potential issues that might arise with individuals and provide positive interventions. Qualified staff, vibrant communities, and strong relationships all combine to develop happy and successful athletes. When players wear shirts with the Chicago City SC crest on them on the pitch, that high quality of life both on and off the field of play will show. Within the parameters of CARE, soccer is merely the conduit for a robust course of events, initiatives, and training all designed to optimize the lives of everyone with whom Chicago City comes into contact. The CARE acronym is visible in everything the club does.

A CLUB FOR THE CITY

City’s College Player Pathway Provides Families With Guidance for Achieving Goals

C

hicago City SC launched its College Player Pathway Program in the fall of 2021 to help support our membership in the college recruiting process. There are a lot of misconceptions about the process as well as the academics, levels of play, and lifestyle of every university that members faced. Through City’s CPPP, however, parents and players will receive a robust understanding of the entire landscape when searching for the perfect fit for college. With a collection of workshops, presentations, and individual consultations for families, the program helps players form an actionable, measurable plan to optimize their chances of success. At the helm is someone who has been involved in every aspect of playing and coaching collegiate and professional soccer. Paparounis brings diverse experience to the College Pathway Coach Tom Paparounis, Chicago City’s Director of Goalkeeping for the past eight years, has taken on this role as he brings diverse experience to the College Pathway Program. There’s no one better to serve as a guide to any place than a person who has traveled that path themselves many times. Paparounis is still coaching in the college ranks in not only the NCAA but the NAIA as well. He assists with the men’s team at Illinois Institute of Technology and with both the men’s and women’s sides at Roosevelt University. However, his time coaching in the college ranks spans all the way back to 2009, when he started his coaching career with Concordia University Chicago. Paparounis also spent four seasons at the NCAA D1 level with Loyola University Chicago. His coaching chops are enhanced by his time playing the game, both on a club and college basis. In addition to playing in the USL League 2, he played for Salisbury University, an NCAA DIII school in Maryland. Paparounis shared how the years have prepared him to assist others in

chicagocitysoccerclub.com

traveling the same path. “Having been or currently a part of the recurring process as a coach at the NCAA Division I, III, and NAIA level in the US, as well as a former college player myself, I can speak to the challenges of both players and coaches to offer insight into what is important to get right in this critical transition period of an athletes life,” Paparounis stated. The program is much more diverse and intensive than merely drawing upon Paparounis’ experience and expertise, however. It’s contemporary and customizable. Friendlies, workshops work in a synergistic fashion Paparounis explained how the program helps families and players prioritize their resources to ensure they are in alignment with the goal of playing soccer at the collegiate level. “The goals of these workshops are to help players and parents navigate the recruiting process through a series of workshops and periodic presentations on topics such as how to research schools, understanding how to properly communicate with college coaches, and setting up an effective online player profile,” Paparounis said. In conjunction with high school activities directors, City plans to host events that will give both boys and girls additional exposure to college coaches. Those will mainly consist of friendly matches with coaches in attendance but will expand to include other opportunities in the future. With the College Pathway, families will learn all the components of the process and take a hands-on approach to increasing exposure rather than just hoping for the best and trying to navigate the next chapter of their lives blindly. The opportunities are out there for those who know how to walk the path.

Chicago City Brings USL Academy Certification to the Second City

T

he expansion of the Chicago City SC’s operations for 2022 goes beyond joining the USLW and USL2 leagues. It also means new opportunities for developing talent in the greater Chicago area through the USL Academy. The USL journey began in 2012 as CCSC became the founding member of the Super Y League in Illinois. SYL is an elite league for teams U11-U19 played throughout the summer with the league winners playing for a national title in December, in Tampa, FL, which CCSC U17 Girls won in 2019. Through Chicago City’s continued pursuit for excellence and opportunities for both players and coaches, it is becoming a recognized institution that provides a long term development model guiding the advancement of the game on and off the field. Chicago City is recognized for excellence in long term player development and guiding the advancement of young players on and off the field. Through the growth of the USL Super Y league which is a grassroots summer program, CCSC were the founding members in Illinois and are now bringing everything USL to our City.

Chicago City’s academy is the first academy club in Chicago to achieve USLA status. Furthermore, Chicago City staff will be integral to the growth of the USL Academy program on a broader basis as well. Through City’s Academy program at U12, U14, U16, and U19 both boys and girls, it not only has the chance to develop its own next generation of talent but see its reputation for producing experienced and skilled players grow as those players find spots on rosters throughout the world. USL W LEAGUE - HEAD COACH

W

CHAD SWIECA

hile Chicago City SC’s approach to building a soccer community in Chicago is that it takes that entire community to pull it off, clearly defined roles within that community are also pivotal to success. City has filled two of those roles recently with coaches for its USL-W club. Chad Swieca will serve as the club’s head coach while Quavis Kirk will assist him. Between the two of them, they bring years of coaching and playing experience, deep knowledge of training best practices, and a desire to push the women’s game in Chicago forward. Swieca played collegiately at Lipscomb University in Nashville and Wheaton College. During that time, he got his first taste of coaching with youth clubs. He then internationally while coaching along the way, including a stint as an assistant with a second-division club in Liberia. After returning to the US, he began his own private training company and connected with Kirk. Kirk’s playing career followed a similar arc. After playing youth and recreational soccer in Pennsylvania, Kirk was introduced to the club system with the Chicago Magic. From there, he became part of the USMNT U-17 system and saw some World Cup competitions in 2005. At that point, he was drafted into MLS and spent several years playing for four clubs. At the age of 25, an ankle injury compelled Kirk to retire from the game but he already had a budding personal training business building at that point. Through taking that expertise back into soccer clubs, Kirk met Swieca. Now, the two are at the helm of building City’s first USL-W club from scratch. “For both Quavis and myself one of our biggest is just the culture we want to bring to the field for these women,” Swieca said. “Yes, there is going to be a competitive nature and yes, it’s going to be a battle on the

pitch. We want to make it so the environment is an extremely safe place because of all the recent events in the women’s game, though. So, for us, the biggest goal for this first season is that every woman is going to be excited about participating in training that is highly competitive where she’ll improve but also she can look at every other person there and be comfortable with who they are as a person.” Although Kirk will handle the technical training of the players and Swieca will take on the tactical side of leading the club, they are not alone in the undertaking. Kirk has seen firsthand how City supports its athletes, families, and staff. “It’s quite amazing how [Chicago City SC CEO] Nick [Mulvaney] has done a great job putting a staff together and getting coaches and parents who have a true love for the game,” Kirk commented. “That’s been our goal; to help players develop a love of the game. Anyone the other team beats us, kudos to them. Right can play soccer but there’s a difference now, though, I don’t think they have what it between playing and loving the game. USL ACADEMY DIRECTOR

CHARLIE LATSHAW III

C

hicago City’s first USL2 coach isn’t just familiar with the soccer scene in the greater Chicago area. He’s a product of it. Charlie Latshaw grew up playing soccer in the Chicagoland area and now things have come full circle for him as he leads Chicago City SC into its premiere USL2 season. His experience, technical knowledge, and intimacy with the Chicago soccer community make him an excellent leader for the program. In 2005, Latshaw began his coaching career at the age of 18 in the northwest suburbs of Chicago while also playing collegiately at Kentucky Wesleyan College. As he continued his collegiate career, he took advantage of an opportunity to be the technical director at Junior Irish Soccer Club in South Bend, Indiana. As he was fulfilling those duties, he took on even more responsibility in acting as an assistant coach for both Ancilla and Holy Cross colleges in Indiana. A few years later, he got an opportunity to coach with Sockers FC Chicago. With Sockers, he worked in both the boys’ and girls’ academies in addition to Zones 1-3. That was when Liverpool took notice of Latshaw. He then moved on to the technical director role for Liverpool’s International Academy Illinois. Never one to rest on his laurels, Latshaw also became an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at Chicago State University. In February of this year, Chicago City was successful in luring him away from those roles to focus his attention on both the USL2 club and filling another position, as has always been the case with Latshaw. Latshaw is also the USL Academy Director for Chicago City. With his expertise and training, Latshaw is ready to take on the challenge of building strong programs. “Our first challenge was building a roster based out of Chicagoland,” Latshaw said. “We are blessed to be in a wonderful market that has a rich tradition of producing talented soccer players and we have been fortunate to secure a fantastic roster full of local talent. Long term, the challenge, and the hope is that we can produce more homegrown talent for our first team. The expansion of the USL Academy will provide us with the long-term

chicagocitysoccerclub.com

pathway to produce talent within our local market and showcase them within our first team.” Latshaw is confident that Chicago City can meet those challenges because of the quality of the Chicago area in terms of soccer that he has firsthand experience with. “Chicago is a wonderful market for a club playing at any of the USL levels,” Latshaw commented. “Locally, there is a vibrant soccer scene that not only has an abundance of players but also has countless fans of the game who are eager to support a local club that is truly based in the city and is connected to the community as a whole. We honestly want to be a club for the city, from the city.” Latshaw by no means has to take on the challenge of building the Academy and USL2 programs alone, however. He knows he has support around him. “Chicago City Soccer Club has done an excellent job of supporting the program from the ground up,” Latshaw stated. “Senior leadership has done an excellent job bringing this dream into reality. They have paved the way so that we have been able to focus on recruiting talented individuals both for the team and the staff. The club is 100% behind our vision of being a realistic path to the professional game for local talent.” With Chicago City and the city that formed him as a coach behind him, Latshaw is ready to elevate the soccer experience for all who come into contact with Chicago City SC.
