MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— We are back tonight for another tough fixture in amongst this challenging and busy schedule. Think back a few months and we were starved of football for so long, but now the games are flying at us this side of Christmas and it’s a brilliant test for us. The opening ten games have produced some big wins and excellent performances. As this busy schedule continues, it will offer opportunities to other players to claim a place in the team and contribute more than they maybe have done before this point. Paul Mullin recovered well from the Walsall game and having Wes Hoolahan and Harvey Knibbs back was good for us. We will again be without Adam May tonight as he continues his return to play protocol from the concussion he suffered last Tuesday. A large part of the challenge is the mental test to grind out performances, to reach for that intensity and competitiveness that we have shown so often so far this season. Of course the demands physically are obvious but this is a testing spell for our togetherness and unity. Saturday’s defeat at Crawley could’ve been very different on another day. The www.cambridge-united.co.uk

timing of the goals hurt us but their goal on half time was deserved for a dominant period of possession. We started well and scored a good goal in the opening minutes but weren’t able to grab the second despite a couple of good chances. The second half started similarly with a strong start and some good attacking moments but that spell ended with a set play goal which was frustrating and then gave us something to chase. We tried all we could and will learn from that spell but had enough final third entries and chances to take a point. And we deserved something from the game. We will have to pick ourselves up though and the quick turnaround to tonight’s game gives us the opportunity to get back to work straight away. Salford are in a transition period with a change of manager, but they have top players for the league and will be promotion contenders. No doubt we will need to find a level similar to the Newport and Port Vale games to compete. These Tuesday evening games under lights aren’t the same without you, but here’s hoping we can give you something to cheer in your living rooms! ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— I confess that I have enjoyed watching Salford City rise under the leadership of The Class of 92. I was born and brought up in Manchester, supporting United from the age of four. I used to go to every home game for years watching Law, Best, Charlton and of course Nobby Stiles who had a trademark running style, with his head back to keep his contact lenses in! Rolling forward many years the players behind our visitors today rekindled the energy and fun of the Busby era when they played with flair and freedom under Sir Alex Ferguson. So, a particularly warm welcome from me to Paul Scholes in his interim role as manager. We go again today following an exciting game on Saturday against Crawley. We lost but we played with passion, energy and skill. We can’t win every game but everyone can see that the team Mark Bonner and Ben Strang have built has the belief and ability to try to do that. We now face the reality of a lockdown which is due to start on Thursday. A key difference from the one in the Spring is that we will be allowed to carry on playing football at this level although only behind closed doors. The idea that we will have fans back in, sadly, recedes further into the future. As many reading this www.cambridge-united.co.uk

will know, Cambridge United have been at the forefront of showing how it is possible to have fans in grounds. We will continue to be vocal in our support for this – but we have to be realistic – it is not going to happen soon. This all adds to the financial pressure on EFL clubs. You may have seen reports that eight EFL clubs accessed emergency funding to pay wages last month. A further 20 are said to be in need of this by December. Be in no doubt, these clubs will not be doing this lightly – and the money is a loan to be repaid out of payments they are due to receive next season. It is helpful that the EFL have put in place this loan facility but it is not a long term solution. Football needs immediate financial help. It also needs to reset how it is run to make it sustainable for future generations. The immediate help, it seems to me, needs to come from the government. They have provided support to the National League. They helped out the arts to the tune of £1.5B. The estimated need of EFL clubs is £400M. So far they have looked to the Premier League to provide help but the PL are clearly unwilling to do this. The solution lies with government. Provide the cash and recoup it over time by setting a levy on PL transfer fees. This would provide the support now and, via the levy, it would be funded by the PL making them live up to promises made to get the season started. In the longer term we need a reset. EFL clubs have done what they can so far by agreeing salary and squad caps. We now need a fairer distribution of funding across the leagues. Project Big Picture addressed this issue but clearly had flaws which led to it being rejected. One of the best commentators on the current situation, and co-author of an excellent blueprint for the future – Saving our Beautiful Game, is Salford co-owner Gary Neville. If you have not seen his interview about the current crisis on Sky Sports then grab a coffee and CLICK HERE to watch it. As a club, I believe we will get through this but we don’t exist as a single entity. We need the whole of the football pyramid to not only survive, but to flourish. We will continue to play our part. For now, thank you to all of our fans who have bought ifollow passes. This really does make a difference. Enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— SALFORD CITY ———— Following an eleventh place finish in their first ever season in the Football League in 2019/20, Salford City once again made their ambitions clear to kick on and continue their rapid rise up the English football pyramid, with a strong summer of activity in the transfer window. 14 new faces arrived at Moor Lane ahead of the season, including experienced centre forward Ian Henderson, who has quickly found his feet with the Ammies and the back of net on five occasions, winning him the League Two Player of the Month award for September. Perhaps though the best indication of Salford’s relentless pursuit for success was the dismissal of Manager Graham Alexander, the man who guided them from the National League in

2018/19, despite going undefeated in the opening five games of the campaign. The Class of 92 have stepped out of the boardroom and into the dugout in the shape of Paul Scholes, at least on a temporary basis for now, with the former Manchester United midfield genius experiencing his second spell as a manager following his short stint with Oldham last year. There will be few betting against the Ammies making it five promotions from eight seasons come May.

THE FORM

Despite currently occupying 10th in the League Two table, Salford have only suffered one CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V SALFORD CITY

9 defeat thus far, and a narrow one at that, at the hands of Port Vale in Scholes’ first interim game in charge. Four draws and four wins means the Ammies have amassed 16 points in their opening seven games, having played one fewer than the Valiants in the final play-off spot. For Scholes, it’s a record of one defeat, a 3-0 win over Southend United and a 1-1 home draw against Crawley Town.

THE MANAGER

It’s Paul Scholes. PAUL. SCHOLES! What more can you say? Over 700 appearances, 100 goals, pulling the strings at the heart of Manchester United’s midfield during its most successful era under Sir Alex Ferguson. Scholes, was as highly regarded by his team mates as he was his opponents, Zinedine Zidane claiming he was “star-struck” when reflecting on their one on one duels at the highest level. His trophy haul across 20 years with United amassed to 11 Premier League titles, three

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

FA Cups, two Champions Leagues, one World Club cup among others. 66 England caps, and 14 international goals rounds off the summary of a staggeringly successful playing career. His step into management began very briefly, with his hometown Club Salford for one game in January 2015, winning 2-1 over Kendal Town. In February 2019, Scholes took up his first full time position with Oldham Athletic, however that was also short-lived. His time at Boundary Park lasted for just seven games, winning one, drawing three and losing three, before Scholes left the Club citing issues with the Club’s ownership. Following the departure of Graham Alexander from Moor Lane on 12th October, Scholes was put in temporary charge of the Ammies with the Club in fifth position. ■

Interview ———— LEON DAVIES ———— “Always make sure you’re a part of the team” says Leon Davies, who has described the togetherness of this season’s first team squad as close as he has experienced in his professional career. The 20-year old U’s academy product, who recently surpassed the 50 appearance mark in amber and black, has provided an insight into the demands and responsibilities each member of the U’s first team must take on if they want to be seen as a contributing figure to the squad. Davies said: “In this squad, you are always playing your part, whether you’re on the field or not. Around the changing room, on the training ground, you have to get around the boys and be a part of this team. “Whether that’s in a win, or a loss, no matter what you have to be there for your team mates. Always make sure you’re a part of the team. “The good start to this season really comes down to the key philosophies Bonz (Mark

Bonner) has put into the team. The new boys have picked up on that straight away, ever since they arrived for day one. “The togetherness is the best I’ve been a part of, for the duration of my professional career. There’s times in games where maybe we go a goal down, or our opponents get an equaliser, and you can look around the pitch and there’s not a single head in our side that sinks. We know we have enough quality to put another one in the back of the net at the other end, and that we have the belief in each other to dig ourselves out of the tough moments. “The team cohesion is just really good.” Davies’ appearance on the right of midfield for the U’s on Saturday, marked his second straight start in the side for the first time in the 2020/21 season. Looking back at his period on the sidelines, the U’s youngster explains the importance of biding his time and the importance of every squad member being ready for their chance. He said: “The team was doing great, and so CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V SALFORD CITY

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— At the beginning of the year we started to collect food on behalf of the Cambridge City Foodbank. We had hoped by now to re-instate the collections, however with supporters not being allowed to attend matches we have not been able to. This doesn’t mean we can’t find alternatives way of helping. We all probably have food that is surplus and sitting in cupboards doing nothing and more likely to be thrown away than used. During the past few weeks we have been in contact with the C3 Church which is local to ground based on Brooks Road on the roundabout by Sainsbury. Food can be donated to the Coldhams Coffee, C3 Centre, between 10am and 4pm Tue-Friday The organisation has distributed over 100,000 meals. Any donations would be amazing and very welcome by them: C3Church Tel: 01223 844415 Email: hello@thec3.uk If you would prefer to deliver to another location below are some of alternative foodbanks locally: Cambridge City Foodbank 2 Orwell House, Orwell Furlong, Cambridge CB4 0PP Ely Foodbank 10 Chapel St, Ely CB6 1AD Phone: 01353 468626 St Ives Foodbank There are also various Trussell foodbanks in the local area for example Royston, Saffron Walden, St Neots and Haverhill where food can be donated. CLICK HERE for more information. Thousands of Premier League supporters recently donated money to their local foodbanks instead of paying for access to see their teams play over the Premier League’s opening pay-per-view weekend. That weekend Foodbanks in the north east and north west reported record donations to their crowdfunder pages. It proves what football www.cambridge-united.co.uk

supporters can do when they come together. If all the local football supporters and teams came together, I am positive we could make a real difference to so many families living locally during a really difficult period so many. Meanwhile, earlier this summer 100 Years of Coconuts published the latest book in the series written by Andrew Bennett called The Moose that Roared. With Christmas coming this is an excellent opportunity to purchase a copy of the book. It is a perfect Christmas present or if you missed ordering the book previously an opportunity to do so. If you want a copy please pre order it now. CLICK HERE to order online. Finally, we have been trying to contact older supporters who may not have the ability to contact the Club online or watch the games on iFollow, to help them keep up to date with the goings on at the Club. If you know someone for example a friend or family member who is a season ticket holder and is not able to watch on iFollow please contact us. They may have during recent months got a device and our records need to be updated or in some cases we may be able to help connect them. Please contact me dave.matthew-jones@cambridge-united.co.uk

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Evening, all. Welcome to the other Manchester reds, let’s hope we fare better than the two encounters in their inaugural season last year which saw us doubled and, if I recall correctly, the 0-4 stuffing at home on 28 January this year saw off our head coach the following day. You know why we have short memories in football!

TO BE FAIR 3 NOVEMBER HASN’T EXACTLY BEEN A HAPPY HUNTING GROUND FOR US OVER THE YEARS To be fair 3 November hasn’t exactly been a happy hunting ground for us over the years. Looking down CT Lane I see four fixtures of note over the seasons, two involving our part time rivals down in Bedfordshire. The first was in our second season in division two in 1979/80 which saw us on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline in front of a decent crowd of 8,104. You know it took us 15 years to beat the Hatters? We didn’t manage it on this day in 1992 either however the 3-3 draw felt like a moral victory as we were 0-3 down come early in the second half. Goals from Lee Philpott and a brace from supersub John Francis (remember him?) sealed the draw. The Bulls from Hereford stole the points on a miserable day in 1987 in front of a measly 2,257. Their first ever League win at the Abbey. Our concentration this evening (and the match day programme focus) is that competition we all forgot about, the Cambs Professional Cup. Is it still going? I’m not sure. As you can imagine it was usual for the two senior Cambridge teams to compete in the final back in the day (it started in 1958/9) although United’s elevation to League status in 1970 did rather diminish the competition, at least in our eyes, and the 1971 final was not played out until the November of that year, over two www.cambridge-united.co.uk

legs, and 3 November saw the first leg at the Abbey and a 2-0 win to the U’s (Greenhalgh and Horrey). The return was the following May (!) and the U’s came out 2-1 winners. Looking at the stats it seems we persevered with said competition until the end of the 2008/9 season (lost to Histon, urgghh), a one off final by then. In the intervening years we played many non-Cambs sides as City effectively dropped out and these included Luton Town (winners in 1978), Norwich City (throughout the 1980s) and particularly oddly, a Canadian Olympic XI in 1992. Enjoy the programme! Finally, on this day in 1952 a certain Clarence Birdseye marketed frozen peas for the first time. He died less than four years later. Bye for now.

COMMUNITY TRUST ——— FOREVER UNITED ——— Forever United is an initiative run by the Cambridge United Community Trust to support the elderly and those at risk of loneliness through this challenging time. The U’s joined 31 other EFL clubs as part of a campaign to tackle loneliness among older people. Simon Wall, the community liaison officer for CUCT, is leading the work on behalf of the U’s and the Trust have called it ‘Forever United’. If you know someone who is on their own right now why not ask them to sign up using the link at the bottom of this page. Some of the people that the Trust engaged with over lockdown had underlying health conditions which meant they went months without physically seeing anybody, and it was not just the elderly. One middle-aged man lived on his own and was shielding in a first-floor one-bedroom flat, and had only left his flat twice in three months. The trust delivered a weekly meal to the person involved, and all of the work just illustrates how much football can be a force for good. “Football has the amazing ability of bringing people together in a time of crisis,” said Wall. “It builds communities and makes them stronger. People talk about a football club

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

being like a family. “That’s why the trust and the football club support their local community because that’s what family members do. “A football club has an active audience and with the explosion in the use of social media they can interact and engage with that audience at the touch of a button. “They also have role models that fans look up to. “How amazing has it been for fans during lockdown to have picked up the phone and have Mark Bonner on the other end asking how they are? “Having a kitchen at the Abbey Stadium also meant that we could cook meals that could be delivered to the most needy in the local community. And then there are the amazing band of volunteers connected to the club that are always willing to help.” The feedback from both fans and CUCT participants has been overwhelming, with anyone one that has been phoned, visited or taken part in an event very grateful. Scunthorpe United and Colchester United were originally scheduled to meet on Friday, however the game was postponed off amid to Covid-19 concerns for the Iron’s who have had a number of positive tests confirmed around the camp. Their match at Port Vale tonight is also called off. Where the league table is concerned, they are 23rd but do have two games in hand. The U’s, winless away, are 13th. After their worst start for 106 years, winless Mansfield Town sacked Graham Coughlan in midweek. However, they couldn’t conjure up a first victory of the season despite a gritty performance as they drew 1-1 at home to Walsall. A Nicky Maynard opener was cancelled

Barrow confirmed their second victory in a week with a resilient 1-0 defeat over ten-man Bradford City. A first goal in a year for Connor Brown was enough to send the Bluebirds up to 15th and now four unbeaten. The Bantams are a place behind after a third consecutive defeat. Stevenage and Grimsby Town battled out the only stalemate of the afternoon at the Lamex Stadium. It was Alex Revell who was the most frustrated man in the dugouts, after the hosts rued some good chances to grab just a second win of the season. Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— REFUSE TO BE AVERAGE. LET YOUR HEART SOAR AS HIGH AS IT WILL A W TOZER

As I write, arguments are raging about the possible effects on little clubs of the impending Second Lockdown. Of course we can’t know the outcome but I can’t see why football behind closed doors presents that much of a risk. Given what is being painfully learned about the effect of the Pandemic on peoples’ mental health and morale, I would say that it is essential to keep competitive football going for as long as possible. Of course what we say is entirely irrelevant, since preventing the NHS from being overwhelmed and keeping people alive is more important than anything else. I am glad that I am not responsible for making the right decisions for us all. It seems to be an impossible job. What we can hope for is a proper rescue package for smaller clubs which doesn’t depend on the Big Six being allowed to do just what they like. Salford are the Nouveau Riche of our league, largely bankrolled by the millionaire’s class of 92. I was fascinated to see that many of them were coached by the legendary Nobby Stiles who died this week. He was a man of humility, class, skill and unimpeachable values. I will always remember his dance of joy after winning the World Cup Final in 1966, the way he outwitted and outplayed Eusebio and the way that he showed all professional sportsmen that 100% effort is a given and not a kind of occasional favour to your team mates, club or fans. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Heaven help the Paul Pogba’s of this world, if they had ever played alongside him. Little as he was, he stands head and shoulders above many current professionals as an example of what can be achieved “simply” by doing your best. As for the competition for places in Cambridge United’s squad right now. Once you get into a team, the object has to be to force the Manager to pick you in future, surely? Our last away performance at Walsall was quite superb...although I wasn’t quite so impressed with the performance of the referee. Two penalties yes but the assault on Mullin was a clear sending off offence. In this VAR driven era, perhaps our officials have lost confidence? A dreadful year has just been made worse by the death of our favourite James Bond but in many ways the future remains bright. It is for our team. Lets ‘ave it!■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
