SATURDAY 2 ND NOVEMBER

kI C k OFF: 15:00

WELcoME

Greetings, and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium as we welcome League One Cambridge United for the FA Cup 1st Round proper.

Michael and the lads head into the game off the back of a well-earnt point against league leaders Forest Green last Saturday. However, todays task cannot be understated – having endured a difficult start to League One, Cambridge United have posted 3-wins in a row, dragging

themselves off the foot of the league table and will be brimming with confidence as they take to the field. As always, we need our Cards Army to back the boys and bring the noise!

A special thank you to our Match& Ball Sponsor – Crossroads Care Surrey

The club are delighted to have Crossroads Care Surrey as our Match Sponsor for today’s game – the only respite charity in Surrey for unpaid carers. As part of our continued

support for Crossroads Care, the Laithwaite Community Stadium will be hosting it’s 2025 edition of “I’m A Director Get Me Out Of Here!”, of which I am delighted to be participating in. See the full release here.

You can also see the 2024 IAD video and learn how to get involved here.

A massive thank you also to our Ball Sponsor, Simmons Family Butchers. Based in St. Johns, Paul and the team provide fantastic quality meat to our Kingfield Street concession stand and Geoff Chapple Hospitality suite. Now taking Christmas, all season ticket holders receive 10% off all orders! Learn more here

Woking vs Cambridge United FA Cup 1st Round

Saturday 2nd November 2024 15:00 Kick-Off

Woking host League One opposition in the form of Cambridge United on Saturday as the Cards look to upset another EFL side in the famous competition.

Michael Doyle should have a near-full squad to choose from depending on the fitness of Raheem Conte, with fan favourite Timi Odusina recovering from injury to put in an impressive cameo last time out. Dan Moss was the goalscorer in last week’s 1-1 home draw with Forest Green Rovers, and he’ll be hoping for another man of the match performance against the U’s.

OPPOSITION WATCH

The League One table was terrible reading for Garry Monk and his Cambridge side before kick-off at home to Wigan Athletic on the 19th October, with the U’s rock bottom having accumulated just one point from their opening nine games, the lowest total across England’s top six divisions at that stage.

Fast forward to now and Cambridge are just a point and a place from safety, with three wins and three clean sheets against Wigan, Stevenage and Burton Albion. Sharing four different goalscorers and with a settled defence, Monk will be sleeping much better than a couple of weeks ago, and his rejuvenated side will fancy their chances of making the second round for

the fourth consecutive season. Last season, Cambridge made Round Three, where they were defeated 5-2 at Blackburn Rovers. Some might remember their famous win at Newcastle United at the same stage back in 2022, where Joe Ironside secured a 1-0 win.

Then-National League North side Guiseley were the last non-league team to defeat Cambridge in this competition with a 4-3 home triumph back in 2018, when the U’s were a League Two side. Garry Monk will be hoping to avoid any slip ups in Surrey, with all eyes on the Laithwaite this Saturday.

Tickets are available to purchase online here.

LAST TIME OUT

The sides last met in the league during the 201314 season, with Cambridge winning 3-0 at the Laithwaite and 2-0 at the Abbey Stadium.

There have been three meetings in the FA Cup between these sides, with Cambridge victorious in 1988 and 1989 and Woking running out as winners in 1996 by a 2-0 margin. Interestingly, all three FA Cup meetings have been won by the visiting side, a record Woking will be hoping to break.

MATCH REPORT & TEAM DETAIL

Week commencing 21st October 2024

WEDNESDAY 23RD OCTOBER

Woking U19 6 - 0 Boreham Wood U19

National League Alliance – Academy South Westfield FC, Woking Park

Woking went in to this game having suffered two serious injuries in the squad. Lewis Mouland, the regular goalkeeper for Academy South games, has had an operation on the ankle injury he suffered in a freak incident in training. Stefan van Wijngaarden, following the double leg break he suffered at Ramsgate during the FA Youth Cup game, had a successful operation on Friday last. We wish them both a complete recovery.

Given these circumstances it was understandable that the Woking team might lack a little of their usual edge. However, it is a little surprising to see Boreham Wood struggling at the bottom

of the league table, and to have, after this game, just one point from four games. This was to be a straightforward afternoon for Woking.

After a quiet opening Woking had the lead on 12 minutes. A neat threaded pass from Harvey Brook put in Lucas Boxall, who showed great composure to round Darius Cnacoshi and slot home from a tight angle, inside the far post.

Boreham Wood did have a couple of half-chances, but found themselves 0 – 2 down on 27 minutes. A fine passing move, involving Sam Brittain and Stanley Kyle putting Boxall through to slide the ball past the ‘keeper for his and Woking’s second.

On 34 minutes Kyle had his reward for his excellent all-round play. Boxall’s long shot was deflected for a corner, which the Wood defence failed to clear under pressure from Boxall, and Kyle was on hand to knock home the loose ball.

Two minutes later the visitors were four behind. Henry McDonald’s free kick volleyed home at the far post by Aidy Silverstein. Woking’s centre-back having not lost the goalscoring instincts of his earlier years. Boreham Wood rallied briefly but found Jack Lewis determined in his defensive duties, even with his side 4 – 0 ahead.

Woking’s neat passing game continued to dominate proceedings, creating chance after chance, and Boxall nearly completed a first half hat-trick with a first-time flick finish which came back off the post.

The half had been rather straightforward for Woking against a somewhat subdued Boreham Wood side.

Half-time: Woking 4 – 0 Boreham Wood

Boreham Wood did start the second-half by winning a corner, but Adam Morley’s delivery came to nothing, and the action soon returned to the pattern of the first-half.

On 48 minutes Silverstein had his second of the game. Tommy Seale’s cross was flicked on by Harvey Brook at the near post and Woking’s new goal-machine was on hand at the far post to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.

On 52 minutes injury forced Jack Lewis from the field, and Woking reorganised, but although Boreham Wood were still competing, the best chances continued to fall to Woking, and the Wood hardly threatened. Woking came closest when Brittain teed up Seale for a strike from the edge of the penalty area which hit the post.

A less eventful half still had time for a sixth Woking goal, on 84 minutes. Brittain dribbling skilfully before his precise shot from 20 yards found Cnacoshi’s bottom left-hand corner. Brook did come close to making it seven, the ‘keeper just reaching his lobbed effort, but the scoring for the day was done.

So, six goals and a clean sheet in a comfortable Woking win - they will certainly face sterner tests in the weeks ahead.

Woking: Mikey Verga, Harrison Stevens, Aidy Silverstein (George Galea-Elston 64), Jacob Farr, Jack Lewis (Charlie Sweeney 52), Henry McDonald, Tommy Seale, Lucas Boxall (Jermaine Junior Young 69), Sam Brittain, Stanley Kyle (Byron Mitchell 64), Harvey Brook. Unused sub: Bob Honey (GK).

The Pre-Academy is for the very youngest players, covering U7s, U8s and U9s. Meeting once a week, players train and learn in a fun and friendly environment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Players that show real talent have the opportunity to progress to Woking FC Academy Youth.

The Pre-Academy trains at The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Thursdays, 17:00 - 18:00.

YOUTH ACADEMY

Starting with U9s and progressing through the age groups right up to U16s, players train with our Academy coaches and have the opportunity to play competitively in the Junior Premier League. Training is held twice weekly at CITC’s sports hub, within the grounds of Woking College, and matches are played on Saturdays. At this level, players are able to continue playing for their grassroots clubs.

As with the main Academy, players receive a progress report twice per season, which helps identify areas of their game to work on and improve. U16s players are assessed throughout the season with a view to being invited to join Woking FC Academy.

WOKING FC ACADEMY

Woking FC Academy is a National League licensed academy. We aim to develop each and every player to reach their full potential, instilling ambition and a professional attitude. We work as closely as possible to Category 3 Academy standards, creating a professional environment in which players thrive.

Players train 5-6 hours per week at CITC’s sports hub. Their development is supported by video analysis of training and matches, group workshops and strength and conditioning sessions. One-to-one reviews are held twice every season, along with player reports so that both the coaching staff and the players themselves have a clear focus on individual development.

Woking FC Academy plays competitive matches in the U18 Isthmian League, U19 National League and also have the opportunity to play in U23 fixtures. Players in our Elite Development Plan (EDP) compete in the Tactic League and National B League. Cup competitions are a feature of the fixture calendar. Pre-season training includes friendlies and there are opportunities to travel abroad for football tours and tournaments, including the Gothia Cup.

Our football timetable is planned in conjunction with players’ education. Academy players can

choose to attend Woking College or focus on gaining the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, which is delivered by SCL Education at Westfield FC. Players on the EDP pathway study towards the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 3 A levels) with SCL.
