MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————

Two cup games in quick succession create a break from the League programme for us, starting today with Shrewsbury Town. As with previous Cup fixtures this season against Birmingham City and Burton Albion, both from levels above ours, we will have to raise our game and ensure we are at a level to compete with a Shrewsbury side who will be looking for success in the Cup. We all know the benefits that can come from this competition financially for clubs, but it also can provide players with opportunities to play at stadiums and against opponents from much higher in the league structure. Every year, we are determined to try and create a run in this competition and we are no different today. In amongst a busy run of games we want to maintain our good form and momentum and take Tuesday’s positive www.cambridge-united.co.uk

result against a strong Salford City side into today. The early stages of that game were tricky and we had to hang in there first half. As with many of the games with the top teams, they are close and could swing either way. It’s in small moments that games can be defined or the direction changed. We gained more control with goals either side of half time and defended well thereafter. Salford have now appointed a new manager, and have the squad to be a promotion team. I think there form in the coming weeks will prove how big a win that was for us. Looking at today, I’m challenging the team to show we can compete with another side from the level above and display the same hunger for results as we have been. We want to create a team who hate losing and drive to progress in every competition. Finally, as we enter another period of lockdown, I wanted to highlight the new fantastic initiative being launched by our magnificent Community Trust in this very programme. Many of you will be aware of the incredible efforts to support our local community via the Here For U’s campaign during the first lockdown. Well, the Community Trust have been quick to organise a new initiative since last weekend’s Government announcement for the upcoming period. U’s At Home, aims to once again support the mental and physical well-being of our local community for the duration of the period in which we all experience another national lockdown. Read full details of U’s At Home on pages 18 and 19. As ever, we are all United in Endeavour through this time.■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Shrewsbury Town ———— Shrewsbury Town make their first visit to the Abbey Stadium since March 2015, where a 95th minute equaliser from Sulley Kaikai concluded a 1-1 stalemate between both teams. The sides have met in Cup action since the Shrews promotion from League Two under Micky Mellon in the 2014/15 season, with the U’s claiming a 0-1 away victory in EFL Trophy action - Joe Piggott the scorer for United on that particular day. Now under the stewardship of former Wolves and Bolton Wanderers defender Sam Ricketts, the Shrews will be hoping they can inject some life into a dismal start to their League campaign with a strong FA Cup performance

this afternoon. They will of course be buoyed to replicate an excellent Cup run last season, which saw them face eventual Premier League champions Liverpool in Round Four, even holding the Reds to a replay at Anfield after an initial 2-2 home draw. They had dispatched of League Two opposition Bradford City and Mansfield Town in the opening rounds prior to that meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, United will be hoping to extend their positive head to head record against the Shropshire side, which currently has the U’s ahead 14 wins to nine.

THE FORM

It’s certainly not been a pretty start to the CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V SHREWSBURY TOWN F.C.

5 20/21 campaign for the Shrews, who alongside four draws have just a solitary win over AFC Wimbledon in mid-October on the board, positioning them 22nd. Goals have been in short supply, with just seven scored. However, they will look to take confidence from a 98th minute leveller from Daniel Udoh on Tuesday night which saw them grab a 1-1 draw against fellow League One strugglers Burton Albion. That result stopped the rot of four successive League defeats in late October.

THE MANAGER

Ricketts was appointed Salop Manager in December 2018, signing a two-and-a-halfyear deal after leaving National League outfit Wrexham AFC. During an extensive and varied playing career, Ricketts represented the Welsh national team, qualifying through his Welsh Grandmother. In September 2013, he reached the milestone of 50 caps for Wales

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

and went on to make two more appearances for the Dragons. Ricketts’ professional playing career began in October 2000 with Oxford United after a number of years in the U’s youth system. The former defender made over 550 senior appearances with his former clubs that include; Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bolton Wanderers, Hull City and Swansea City – a career that saw the full back play in every tier of professional football in England. He was in charge of Wrexham between May and December 2018, taking charge of 23 games, winning 13 and leaving the Welsh outfit in fourth position in the National League to join the Shrews, where he’s been in the hot seat for just short of two years. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon. The magic of the FA Cup, eh? I struggle with it a bit these days but there again I never did complete my programme notes for 10 March 1990! There is nothing like a break from the twice-weekly drudgery of the League programme, is there? All those pointless away trips and struggles at home in front of a 3-4,000 gate. Well looking back down the old Cut Throat Lane thoroughfare of memories, just the one fixture on this date sticks out, it is not the FA Cup however it is the little shrews of Salop again, back in 1981 in the old D2 days. A brace from Joe Mayo without reply did the trick - anybody remember “we’ll take more care of you, Joe Mayo, Joe Mayo” to the tune of the old British Airways advert? Just me, it seems! A crowd of 3,851 attended that day. We went seventh that day(seventh in the CHAMPIONSHIP for younger readers) although we ended up fourteenth at the end of the campaign but respectable enough in what was our fourth season at that level. Take ya pick for famous birthdays today by the way, Butch Cassidy, Leonard Cohen, Joe Frazier. Paul Newman gets my vote though, wearer of the Baracuta Harrington jacket. Just cool, peppermint cool. ■

WOMEN’S FC —— BEN YEOMANS – HEAD COACH —— After a very positive start to the season, October has been a difficult one from all angles. We had lost two very influential players after the Hashtag game; one to a knee injury and one due to visa complications, but with this out of our control, we planned ahead to Tuesday night away vs Cambridge City. The performance wasn’t one to be desired and we only managed to secure a point from the game and although on the night City probably should have taken all three, it was still two points dropped for us. Morale was low in our camp and we had two very tough fixtures ahead of us. Arguably the strongest two sides in the league, Billericay and Ipswich were our next two opponents back to back and we knew we were going to have to be on our game to salvage anything from either fixture. We had to postpone the Billericay game due to pitch problems, but the Ipswich game was one that I won’t be in a hurry to re-live. Ipswich are a tough side, far too good for our division with seven U23 England internationals in their squad, and a full time training programme as a foundation

of their success but that is still no excuse for the excessive scoreline, which saw us lose 10-0. I took responsibility for the outcome of the game to the girls. My tactical approach was wrong and it was a humbling learning curve for me, but I also demanded the girls look at themselves for the level of effort and application that they chose to put in. The following game was an FA cup fixture arranged at short notice and we were drawn against Billericay, who out of all the possible opponents, were one of the toughest. Again, morale wasn’t great going into the fixture, but we had worked hard during the week on our compact shape out of possession and triggers of when to press the opposition and when to stay deep and solid. Billericay dominated the game from a possession point of view, but we defended well in the most. We were 1-0 down at half time to a quickly taken set piece, and we had a foothold in the game. We actually played better in the second half, defended more intensely, worked more as a unit and maintained possession slightly better when the opportunity arose. We scored and also hit CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V SHREWSBURY TOWN F.C.

11 the bar, but due to two more set pieces and switching off from a throw in in our defensive third, we conceded three sloppy goals and lost 4-1. There’s no doubt it was an improvement on the previous week, but nowhere near the level of performance that I expect from the girls. Kent was the most important game of the season thus-far. They finished bottom of the table last season but have picked up some extremely talented players, and have started the season off superbly sitting mid-table, above us in the league. I was concerned about the mindset of the girls having come off the back of two heavy defeats and playing a team that didn’t perform too well last time round, it really could have gone one or two ways. Not getting points in this fixture could have crumbled the group, and they definitely weren’t going to be handed to us. Preparation was great, training Tuesday and Thursday was solid, focusing away from tactical detail and more around the nitty gritty side of organisation; locking on quickly from defensive throw ins to prevent possession, preventing

opposition from playing quickly from set plays, marking tight from corners set pieces etc. We secured all three points with a professional 2-0 scoreline. Kent tested us at times, but for me it was the performance we needed; we dominated, we defended well collectively, we managed the game and most importantly, I saw a togetherness and a resilience from the girls which showed they really understood what this week’s training topics were about. We had the Club media guys come down before the game and create some Headshots’ GIFS\ team photos for us which I think helped the girl’s team spirits but also gave them a chance to talk together socially and air any thoughts which were definitely needed! October has really been a month of lessons learned. Although we haven’t picked up as many positive results as I’d have hoped, the things I have learned about myself, about the players, and what they have gone through together will be invaluable for the remainder of the season. We have no fixture this Sunday, but I will be off to watch our development side away to London Bees.■

Jimmy Thompson ———— 1943-2020 ———— The Cambridge United family was saddened to hear of the death, on October 28 at the age of 77, of former full back Jimmy Thompson, whose career in black and amber straddled two eras of the club’s history. Joining Bill Leivers’ Southern League side in 1969, as the U’s strove for the league and cup double and election to the Football League, Jimmy was one of the famous eleven who played in the club’s first ever League game in August 1970. Over five seasons he made nearly 250 appearances in all competitions. A rapid, highly dependable right back, he mixed solid defensive attributes with the ability to start and continue attacks, and on one occasion supplied the finishing touch. Jimmy arrived at the Abbey Stadium in January 1969, via an unusual route. Born in the former coal-mining community of Felling, Tyne and Wear in 1943, he had played as an amateur for Preston North End before

signing a professional contract with Grimsby Town in 1961. He became a popular fixture at Blundell Park, playing more than 150 times before, in 1967, asking for a transfer. Leivers was keen to sign him at that point but the Mariners hoisted a £10,000 price tag – a hefty fee for a defender at the time. He was eventually released from his contract provided he didn’t sign for an English League club, and moved to Port Elizabeth. Jimmy swapped South African sunshine for wintry Newmarket Road in January 1969. He made his debut (along with fellow new signing Mel Slack) in a Southern League Cup quarter-final against Chelmsford City at the Abbey, which ended in a 0-0 draw but provided a stepping stone for a triumphant end to the season in which United captured both the cup and the league title. As at Grimsby, Jimmy became a well-liked regular in the U’s side over the following four seasons. In 1969/70 he racked up the CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V SHREWSBURY TOWN F.C.

13 remarkable total of 68 full appearances and two substitutions, and he was there on 15 August 1970 when Lincoln City visited the Abbey for United’s debut in the Football League. A knee cartilage operation in 1973 brought his career to a halt and it was a sad blow when, later that year, he was advised to quit professional football. He had played 239 full games for United, made five substitute appearances and scored one goal – in the club’s last ever Eastern Professional Floodlit League game, a 3-2 win at Romford in May 1971. United paid up Jimmy’s contract, giving him £1,000, but his insurance company would only contribute a partial payment of £375 because his knee had degenerated before the injury that finished his career. A disgusted Leivers said: ‘There isn’t a footballer playing today who hasn’t got ankle, knee or groin troubles after a few years in the game.’ United kept Jimmy in employment as field manager in the commercial department.

IN 1969/70 HE RACKED UP THE REMARKABLE TOTAL OF 68 FULL APPEARANCES AND TWO SUBSTITUTIONS, AND HE WAS THERE ON 15 AUGUST 1970 WHEN LINCOLN CITY VISITED THE ABBEY FOR UNITED’S DEBUT IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE The club also put on a testimonial match for the popular player, although he had to wait until May 1975. Supporters showed their admiration for Jimmy by turning out in large numbers – 7,257, to be precise – to see his All Stars XI, which included Ian Hutchinson, Geordie Armstrong, Willie Carr, Terry Mancini and Dave and Bob Worthington, lose 4-2 to a strong Norwich City team. Legendary U’s goalkeeper Rodney Slack remembers his teammate as ‘a nice, quietly spoken lad who was great in the dressing www.cambridge-united.co.uk

room. He knew what he was talking about when it came to football, and he never tried to shift the blame for his mistakes. He always put his hand up.’ Rodney recalled fondly the night the Corona soft drinks depot next to the Abbey Stadium caught fire. ‘It was two o’clock in the morning and the houses nearby were being evacuated,’ he said. ‘Jimmy, who lived next door to the depot, came running across the road to our house with his pride and joy, his two Doberman Pinscher dogs. No sign of his wife or daughters. ‘We feared the worst. “Where are they?” we asked. ‘”I’m just going back for them now,” Jimmy said.’ Jimmy subsequently returned to the Grimsby area. He was afflicted by dementia in his later years but retained some memories of his Mariners and U’s careers. He leaves a widow, Wendy, children and grandchildren. The funeral will be private. ■

It was a first win in five for the Mariners who rise to 16th, and a first defeat in five for the Bluebirds who are 18th and very clear from danger. Mansfield Town suffered late heartache as Bolton Wanderers clinched a last-gasp 1-1 draw at the Macron Stadium. A George Lapslie strike on 57 looked destined to hand the Stags their first win of the campaign, however that was cruelly snatched away from them as Trotters skipper Antoni Sarcevic chipped in with his third goal in five at the death. For teams with such high aspirations pre-season, a strong run of form

is a necessity right now. Port Vale were scheduled to entertain Scunthorpe United at Vale Park on Tuesday, however the game was postponed due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases amongst the Iron’s camp. The results proved kind for the Valiants, who are 7th and aware that a win in their game in hand would see them 3rd. Scunthorpe, however, have three games to make up and will be adamant to improve on their four point total. Bradford City cruised back to winning ways with a comprehensive 3-0 success over rockbottom Southend United. First-half strikes from Callum Cooke, Elliott Watt and Harry Pritchard ensured Stuart McCall’s side eased to victory. They were never troubled by a winless, and simply dejected, Southend side, who have just two points from 11 games. ■

We inspire the next generation of scientists

“AstraZeneca’s support for and involvement in the Active Science programme makes a huge difference to our ability to inspire 800 children across Cambridge each year to take an interest in science through physical activity. Bringing worldclass science equipment, provided by AstraZeneca, into local primary schools in Cambridge excites us as much as it does the children we engage with.”
