MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— Today is our fourth game in a fortnight at the Abbey and it’s great to be returning to League action against a Barrow team who have adjusted to life in the EFL well and provide a stern test for us. Last weekend’s FA Cup exit was frustrating as we felt we deserved more from the game having played some good football, had a huge number of final third entries and set plays, and chased the game with a good speed and urgency. Falling behind in the game gave Shrewsbury something to defend and they did it well. We weren’t able to carve out too many clear chances at goal but I liked the competitiveness of the team and the way in which we were a match for a side from a higher league. Tuesday’s games against Peterborough gave the players who have played less football so far this season a key game. The result mattered in terms of topping the group to get a home tie in the last 32, and the standard of the game was a good one. Both teams used their squads to play the game and try to win. The first half was a worthy test against a possession-based team with good style, and good chances arrived for both teams. Falling behind to an unbelievable strike just after half time was tough to take but our response and performance thereafter was excellent. We again chased the game with speed and urgency and on another day score more of the chances we created. The goalkeeper made some excellent saves and we deserved the equaliser at least. The penalty shoot-out gained us an extra point and Callum’s three saves were fantastic. We are back to the action of the League today for our final game in the 30 day block we have highlighted. This is game nine of an intense schedule, which www.cambridge-united.co.uk

has seen the squad utilised fully as we expected. The task is to come out of the game better off than we started before a few days rest to prepare for the next big spell of an eight-game month. We will need to re-focus and regain the intensity and purpose we have been playing with to deliver a performance that makes us competitive. Congratulations to Joe Neal on his first team debut on Tuesday and to Ben Worman for his first goal. We ended the game with five academy products on the pitch and Kai Yearn, a promising under 16 experiencing first team matchday involvement for the first time. With our young professionals frustrated by the non-league’s pause to the season, they have a tough month ahead and need to use it as an opportunity to train and work in the gym to gain as much as they can out of a disappointing moment. That, after all, is our mantra. Whatever happens, whatever we are faced with, we respond in quick, positive fashion. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— It is with particular joy that I offer a warm welcome to Barrow today. It is a place I know well as I have strong family ties there. As a child I spent many a chilly afternoon being blasted by strong Irish Sea winds on Walney Island. It is great to see them back in the Football League. On the pitch we have had a week of two halves: Our FA Cup game against Shrewsbury last Saturday could so easily have gone the other way. Clearly we wanted to win but it was not to be and, just maybe, that old cliché: “We are concentrating on the league”, rings true this year. We have a very crowded season and the odd weekend without a game might turn out to be helpful. On Tuesday we had the great pleasure of hosting our local rivals, Peterborough, in the newly named Papa John’s Trophy. I know there is a lot of controversy amongst fans about this competition but we are in it and, with a number of changes, we won the game. I was amused by the post-match interview that Darren Ferguson gave asserting that their unbeaten run continues. That is true if you don’t count the penalties. Maybe England did beat Germany in Euro 96? www.cambridge-united.co.uk

This competition is providing us with very welcome income and it is also giving an opportunity to our talented academy players to show what they can do. It is a night that Ben Worman will never forget! The result also means that we have a home tie next. This was a prize well worth winning as one of the teams left in the Southern side of the draw is Exeter which, as some will know from last year, is a very long way to go for a midweek game. Off the pitch we saw the career of FA Chairman Greg Clarke come to a crashing end. I watched his appearance live before the DCMS Select Committee. As the leader of the organisation that provides the rules for our game, and which has just launched a Diversity Code, his performance was so sadly lacking of any understanding of what diversity and inclusion mean as to be embarrassing. Words do matter and he kept on getting them wrong. Let us hope that the FA choose his replacement wisely. The other part of the DCMS meeting was focussed on a financial rescue package for EFL clubs. Rick Parry for the EFL and Premier League boss Richard Masters said that they hoped to reach agreement soon by which they suggested a deal could be done by the end of this month. With many clubs (not us thankfully) struggling to pay wages at the end of this month let us hope they are right. In the meantime, enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Barrow AFC ———— Back in the Football League for the first time in 48 years, the Bluebirds have made a more than steady start to proceedings as they look to establish themselves in League Two and will be hoping to solidify that this afternoon. Having secured promotion under the management of Ian Evatt, who led Barrow to the top of the National League division as the highest scorers helped largely by a 20 goal haul for Scott Quigley – the visitors arrive today under the stewardship of former Blackburn and Birmingham midfielder David Dunn. The 40-year took to the helm at Holker Street in July, following Evatt’s departure to fellow League Two side Bolton Wanderers.

Today’s game will be the first meeting between the sides in seven years, having not faced each other since 2013, where a 2-1 win for the U’s with Sam Smith and Tom Elliot on the scoresheet, resigned Barrow to relegation to the Conference North on that particular day.

THE FORM

So far it’s two wins, five draws and four defeats for the Bluebirds in 20/21, earning themselves 11 points which places them in 18th position ahead of this afternoon’s fixture. However, the signs are there that Dunn’s outfit are beginning to find their feet. Prior to a defeat to Grimsby Town last week, CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BARROW A.F.C.

9 Barrow were unbeaten in four, having taken full points against Mansfield Town in a 2-4 rout at Field Mill, and a 1-0 home win over Bradford City.

THE MANAGER

David Dunn was appointed as the new Manager of Barrow in July, leaving his position as Assistant Head Coach at Blackpool to lead The Bluebirds in their first season back in the EFL. As a player, Dunn came through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers where he made a breakthrough into the First Team under Roy Hodgson at the start of the 1998/99 campaign. He went on to have an 18-year playing career at the highest level, across two

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

spells at Ewood Park with a four year stint at Birmingham City. He rounded off his playing career at Oldham Athletic, where the midfielder made eight appearances before hanging up his boots in 2016. His career in coaching too started at Blackburn Rovers, within the academy set up before moving to Blackpool where he became caretaker boss following the departure of Simon Grayson. He remained at Bloomfield as assistant to Neil Critchley right up until the opportunity to take full time charge of Barrow came about this summer. â–

Interview ———— BEN WORMAN ———— Born and raised in Waterbeach and on the books of the Football Club since the age of seven – Ben Worman really is an Academy product made in Cambridge, and his derby leveller over Peterborough United marked the latest significant milestone in his journey with Cambridge United. The tenacious youngster, who woke up on the morning of Tuesday’s game as a St Neots player before being recalled from his loan, made an excellent impact when introduced as a second half substitute by Mark Bonner, and grabbed his first senior goal to set the U’s on course for a shoot-out win over the Posh. Worman recollects that dream moment: “Getting the goal was really nice, and it only just snuck in if I’m being honest. It wasn’t the cleanest of strikes but they all count and I was buzzing to get that goal. It’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time, and it’s a good feeling to see that pay off and that I can show I’m able to take a chance. “My parents have been able to watch me live during my time at St Neots but obviously couldn’t get into the game on Tuesday. They are big fans of the Club anyway so they’ll have been watching on iFollow. “I walked into the dressing room and quickly had a few messages of congratulations on my phone, so my mum and dad were really happy.”

Worman admits the opportunity to pull on the black and amber at the Abbey came as a slight surprise, but he was thrilled to carry the scintillating form he’s been showing under Barry Corr with the Saints into U’s first team action. “It was a bit of a weird situation really, I was told late the night before that they were looking to recall me from St Neots, and was told soon after that I was going to be on the bench for the game. “I knew I was going to be in the squad but still on the morning of the game I was on loan at St Neots. Last month I was loaned out, thinking I’d be there for the month and then with everything that’s been happening around the new lockdown, it leaves you thinking you won’t be playing for a while. And then all of sudden I got the opportunity against Peterborough. “I was really pleased to get on to the pitch for the first team and getting the win made it even better. It all happened really quickly, but that’s just typical of football! And you have to be ready.” And to have notched his first goal for the Club against the Blue half of Cambridgeshire… “Oh it’s massive! Everyone knows supporting this Club, that the games with Peterborough are massive and mean something. Even if there aren’t fans in or in whatever competition, it’s always good to get one over on them.” ■ CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BARROW A.F.C.

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon, all. So we entertain today the Bluebirds from Holker Street. It’s been a while you know. If (and we should) discount nine seasons of purgatory aka The Conference Years, then the last time we faced off was 15 April 1972, at the Abbey. I can’t be bothered to work out the number of days but it’s more than 48 and a half years ago. Anyway, they have a nice badge too, do Barrow. Bit of thought gone into it…. I did my usual metaphorical stroll down Cut Throat Lane in the week to check out home games from the past on this date. Five games it seems since 1970 including a cup tie v Farnborough in 1987 (scraped home 2-1), a 2-1 reversal v Barnsley in our second and final season in D2, that thrilling win against the Cobblers on a Friday night under the lights in our first season back in the League in 2014. And we also played Kettering in 2009 but that’s enough of that.

THE CROWD WAS 3,608 WHICH WAS 600 DOWN ON THE PREVIOUS HOME GAME FIVE DAYS EARLIER ALTHOUGH WE DID LOSE TO WORKINGTON The focus for today and programme feature is the Newport fixture back in 1970, just three months into our inaugural campaign. Our ninth home game of the season saw us turn the Ironsides over 3-2 with a brace for George Harris and one for Ivan Hollett, his first of the season, who ended up our top scorer that season with eleven. The crowd was 3,608 which was 600 down on the previous home game five days earlier although we did lose to Workington. Those were the days! Good to see that fickleness isn’t a modern day phenomenon. Enjoy the programme and see what one shilling bought you in the day. Bye for now. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

The Exiles have enjoyed a plethora of FA Cup success of late, Salford City stand in their way of reaching Round Three. The Ammies, who have recently appointed Richie Wellens, ran out 2-0 winners over Hartlepool United at the Peninsula Stadium courtesy of strikes from Bruno Andrade and Emmanuel Dieseruvwe. Today’s opponents Barrow had their clash with AFC Wimbledon postponed due to the Dons’ squad being decimated by a Coronavirus outbreak. Should the Bluebirds progress when the sides meet, they’ll pit their wits against Crawley Town. In arguably the most entertaining cup contest of all time, the Red Devils came from behind three times to secure a thrilling 5-6 success over National League high-flyers Torquay United. There will be no cup run for Bolton Wanderers this season, who fell short 2-3 at the Macron Stadium against newly-promoted Crewe Alexandra. The Railwaymen will face League Two opposition once more, travelling to Cheltenham Town who eventually saw off an ambitious South Shields side 3-1, helped by an Alfie May brace. It was a third consecutive First Round loss for www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Cambridge United, who were edged out 2-0 by Shrewsbury Town at the Abbey Stadium. It was raining goals at Sincil Bank, as Lincoln City inflicted a record cup defeat on Forest Green Rovers with a rampant 6-2 win. Mansfield Town secured their first win of the season with a shock 0-1 victory at Sunderland, it topped off a superb week for the Stags, who appointed Nigel Clough as their new manager on the Friday. He’ll be in the dugout when they entertain National League strugglers Dagenham & Redbridge in Round Two. Tranmere Rovers ground out a moraleboosting 2-1 success over John Coleman’s Accrington Stanley thanks to a late header from Peter Clarke. They’ll now host Brackley Town of the National League North. Last, but not least, the damage was done in the first half as Walsall fell to a 1-2 defeat at home to Bristol Rovers. It culminated what was a weekend full of the agony and the ecstasy. A plethora of cup shocks means just 13 League Two teams guaranteed their passage through. And who says the FA Cup has lost its magic? ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— APPRECIATION IS A WONDERFUL THING; IT MAKES WHAT IS EXCELLENT IN OTHERS BELONG TO US AS WELL VOLTAIRE

I am, by nature, an optimist. I think most Cambridge fans are. We need to be. Much of what we have seen, albeit remotely, this season has been, compared with previous seasons, entertaining, encouraging and rich in promise. So much so, it has made our exclusion from watching games in the ground even more frustrating. Having said that, a glance at social media following our FA Cup defeat to Shrewsbury was a bit like standing on a virtual Habbin North! You would think that we had been outplayed by an inferior team, given up, or simply not wanted to be in the next round in some strange contrary way. And the truth, of course, was that Shrewsbury are a division higher, smarting from previous defeats and they scored two outstanding goals. We weren’t as good as we have been but we matched Shrewsbury and played some very good stuff. We might have gambled on two up front but injuries have not been kind to us and, although we could have done with the money, the suggestion that now we can concentrate on the league is not an entirely bad one. One big plus was the performance of Boateng, who is getting more influential as he gets fitter. That, in addition to the strong link up play involving Dunk, Iredale and Hoolahan on one side and Knoyle and Hannant on the other, means that we will give anyone a game. Maybe the squad is a bit thin, but most teams would have missed Mullin and Ironside. Having Digby and O’Neil www.cambridge-united.co.uk

in the side makes us look more resilient and Darling is going to be a tremendous player. We haven’t seen much of Dallas but I think he’s got something and I hope he continues to develop. Other than that, there’s not much to be pleased about. No doubt Habbin North thinks that Morecambe and Scunthorpe away were lucky wins, far above our true capability. I don’t. Personally, the sooner I can get back in the stadium and watch this Cambridge United side who never stop working for each other the better, Bah! ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
