SIMON DOBBIN ————16/06/72 – 21/10/20 ——— It was with great sadness and a heavy heart that everyone associated with Cambridge United received the news of Simon Dobbin’s passing on Wednesday. The love shown towards him and his family since then, from far beyond the Cambridge United football family but indeed right across the national football family, has been an indication of the strength and resilience shown by the Dobbins in the face of such tragedy. No one can ever fully appreciate the love, support, care and assistance that his wife Nicole, daughter Emily, friends and family gave Simon during recent years following the incident in March 2015 that changed his life forever. Their courage, dignity and strength is truly immeasurable. It is to them that we send our most sincere thoughts, deepest condolences and all of our love at this time, and we share with them in their loss. Simon was a season ticket holder for many years who followed the Club both home and away. He loved his football, sharing his

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

support between both Cambridge United and Liverpool. Simon’s enjoyment of following the U’s was far more than the ninety minutes on the pitch. It was about the camaraderie and the social side of match days, on terraces up and down the country alongside close friends and the rest of the United faithful. His first visit back to the Abbey Stadium following the tragic incident was as poignant a moment as the Abbey has ever and may ever experience again, with banners expressing fans’ support and love towards one of our own. The joy can be seen across Simon’s face as they bravely took to the field together that day. Simon rightly lapped up the applause of everyone in the ground from both home and visiting supporters that day. His huge smile truly lit up the Abbey – his wife Nicole commenting on how loved being the centre of attention. Simon made further visits to the ground and always enjoyed being a part of the matchday experience. He will be remembered fondly and sadly missed in equal measure by the entire family of Cambridge United FC. Today we will reflect on that with a minute’s silence ahead of kick off, that we ask all supporters, wherever they are watching the game from, to join us in. Rest peacefully Dobbo. Forever a U. ■

MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— Today we welcome Bolton Wanderers who will probably created our own issues with our use be buoyed by a late equaliser on Tuesday night of the ball. at Barrow. Ian Evatt is building a new team In the second half, we found another level and after a busy off season of recruitment, and some of the football was pleasing to their style of possession football will create a watch. 5 Following today’s game we have another tough week coming up on the road at Walsall and Crawley. This busy period of games tests our squad depth, motivation and focus. I have been impressed and delighted with the togetherness and spirit we have displayed so far this season, and whilst we are all enjoying being together and developing as a team, we have to embrace the challenges ahead and maintain the consistency we have found. The last time we played Bolton Wanderers was 20 years back in the FA Cup. Sam Allardyce and Roy McFarland were in the dugouts leading the teams and had it not been for a scandalous decision to award a free kick against Trevor Benjamin, who was through on goal, the outcome could have been so different. In the end, Eidur Gudjohnson sealed the 3-1 victory that halted our progress beyond the fifth round. Back then, 14 years old, I sat in the Main Stand (D & A Stand) and watched the game, scarf wrapped around my neck on a cold January evening, cursing that very decision. Today, watching from a very different perspective, I hope to be enjoying a better outcome and a performance full of the qualities I was so excited by in Roy’s team. ■

7 truly make a football club what it is, and we will reflect on that with a minute’s silence in Simon’s memory ahead of kick off today. We all share a common passion for our club. The fact that fans are not currently allowed in to watch matches is frustrating as, even with rising Covid levels, I think it would be possible to have fans back in. I remain hopeful that, at some point this season, this will happen. In the meantime, we are grateful to all of our fans for doing what you can to show your support. We continue to sell ifollow passes in greater numbers than many other clubs – for the game against Port Vale we sold 644 on top of the 1,500 free passes to our season ticket holders. This was the second highest home team level of sales in the league! Watchers on ifollow will have noticed our growing group of “fans” sitting in the South Stand. This is the “face in the crowd” initiative organised by CFU. Please don’t share this thought with some big Premier League clubs as they will think we have gone mad but the main motivation behind this is not to make money! The aims are to encourage supporters Welcome to Bolton Wanderers, a club with a to continue their support on match days and to very long and proud history. TODAY’S VISITORS ———— BOLTON WANDERERS ———— It certainly won’t have been the start Trotters fans would have hoped to have seen to their first season in the English Fourth Division since 1988. Nevertheless their quality and depth in squad will without question make them a fearsome proposition for Cambridge United this afternoon and more than likely for all of League Two during the season ahead. Ian Evatt is in charge at the Macron Stadium these days and perhaps understandably it’s taking a new-look Bolton side with a host of new faces, a little time to settle into their rhythm in 2020/21 and adjust to the former Blackpool and Chesterfield defender’s style of play. What’s clear to see from their League

Two games so far though, is Wanderers enjoy a possession based method under Evatt, having seen plenty of the ball during the opening games of this campaign. Eoin Doyle and Antoni Sarcevic both switched to the Trotters in the summer and are just two names in a squad filled with talented attacking players that have a proven record at this level. This is only Bolton’s second ever season at this level, and they’ll be hoping it’s as short-lived a stay as they can possibly make it.

THE FORM

Bolton will certainly take confidence from a late comeback against Evatt’s former Club CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BOLTON WANDERERS

9 Barrow on Tuesday night, with Sarcevic registering an equaliser in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time to pick up Wanderers fifth points of the season. A 1-2 away win over Harrogate Town and goalless draw with Grimsby, both in October, mean Evatt’s side are beginning to find their feet following September filled with defeats to Newport County, Colchester United and Forest Green.

THE MANAGER

Evatt began his professional career with Derby County and made his senior debut in May 2001 in the Premiership against Ipswich Town. He went on to feature Northampton Town and Queens Park Rangers, before eventually settling at Blackpool where the central defender went on to make over 200 appearances for the Tangerines. He was an even present during Blackpool’s famous since in the top-flight, with his only Premier League goal actually

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

coming against his current Bolton Wanderers in a 2-2 draw. He ended his playing career with a five year stint at Chesterfield between 20132018, making over 260 appearances for the Spireites during his two spells with the Club. His new career path in the dugout started with a short spell as caretaker boss at Chesterfield, before he was appointed the permanent manager of Barrow ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. Evatt made an immediate impact and last season guided the Club to promotion from non-league to end Barrow’s 48 year absence from the Football League. His success at Holker Street led to today’s visitors Bolton Wanderers to come knocking for his services ahead of the current season. ■

Interview ———— HIRAM BOATENG ———— Three games in and it’s three wins on the board for Hiram Boateng, since the midfielder arrived at the Abbey on a short-term loan from MK Dons earlier this month. The former Exeter City man has spoken to the match day programme about why Cambridge United has been the right move for him at this stage in his career, as he not only looks to enjoy an increase in match minutes but help the U’s in their push up League Two. Boateng discusses his opening performances in Amber and Black, what it’s been like to work under Mark Bonner, and the strange situation in joining a new club but not having the chance to enjoy a connection with the U’s supporters. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon. Thick and fast, eh? You know I said winning all the time can get boring well…... I lied! Today we welcome the Trotters from Bolton. Some of you out there are still smarting I hear from the last time we played Bolton...Trevor Benjamin is still seething. The thirteenth and unluckiest fixture for the U’s saw us pitted against the Premier League opposition on 29 January 2000 (OMG) in the FA Cup 5th round and the visitors were fortunate to escape in to the next round after some questionable refereeing decisions. I’ll leave it there. The previous dozen encounters saw three wins and five draws for the U’s, I’d suggest the most significant being one evening on 2 April 1991 when a 2-1 home victory saw us continue our rampage towards the Division 3 title that season. And I can still smell Phil Neal’s sour grapes in his post-match interview. So 24th October, what have we been up to on that date in the past? Looking down the Lane I see four home fixtures since we entered the Football League and all round a bit average, two home defeats v Colchester and Northampton in 1987 and 2000 respectively. A goalless draw v Shrewsbury in 1998 and saving the best until last, an emphatic 4-2 win v Port Vale in our first season in division three in 1973. Messrs Greenhalgh, Ferguson, Foote and Lennard got the goals in front of 3,612. We won only two games away from the Abbey though that season which tells you how it all ended up. Immerse yourselves in the programme from that day. Finally, spare a thought (but not for long) for this day in 1933 when a couple of famous East End gangster twins were introduced to earthly proceedings. I think football was probably a little pedestrian for them. Bye for now.

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Cambridge United, and that man Paul Mullin, made the headlines once again as the side at the summit beat Port Vale 3-1 on Tuesday. A penalty a piece in the first half from Mullin and Theo Robinson saw both sides go into the break level. However, a further two goals from Mullin, who now has 10 goals in 7 league games, wrapped up the three points for Mark Bonner’s side who continue to go from strength to strength. The loss sends the Valiants down to 13th with 10 points, just the one win in four for them now. In at 2nd, and also with 16 points to their name, are Newport County after an early Tristan Abrahams’ penalty earned them a 1-0 victory at Stevenage. Despite not firing on all cylinders going forward, the Exiles remained resolute defensively when called upon in a game of very little chances. Alex Revell cut a frustrated figure post-match, nevertheless, as his Stevenage outfit are now 18th and have lost four in five. Cheltenham Town proved they can grind out the results when necessary after the Robins narrowly beat Scunthorpe United 1-0 at Whaddon Road. In a below-par encounter, the only goal of the game came on the 5th minute when catalyst Reuben Reid dispatched with aplomb from the spot. It ensures they sit in the final automatic promotion places on 15 points, whereas a depleted Scunthorpe are now 23rd after four unsatisfactory losses. Harrogate Town are clearly relishing their maiden campaign in League Two after edging out Grimsby Town 2-1 under the floodlights. Jack Muldoon, now on 6 for the campaign, found the back of the net twice either side of a James Tilley strike for the Mariners. A third consecutive win rises the Sulphurites to 4th, whereas Ian Holloway’s men are 16th after a steady start. Carlisle United had to settle for a share of the spoils at Boundary Park as Oldham Athletic secured a late 1-1 draw. Defender Aaron Hayden popped up to score once again for

the Cumbrians on 54, but the visitors could not hold out. A superb late finish from Zak Dearnley terminated any chance of a fourth consecutive win for Chris Beech’s improving side, who despite the draw are 5th. Oldham are now up to 19th. Despite an improvement in performance, Mansfield Town’s winless run was extended to seven as they fought out a battling 1-1 draw at Morecambe. Burnley loanee Adam Phillips raced the Shrimps into an early lead, which was soon to be cancelled out by Harry Charsley’s first goal in Stags colours. Morecambe occupy a creditable 6th and Mansfield succumb to 22nd. Salford City were in cruise control as they secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory over struggling Southend United at the Peninsula Stadium. A Harry Lennon own goal, a cool James Wilson sidefoot finish and an expertly drilled Ian Henderson header gave interim boss Paul Scholes his first victory. It was enough to break into a play-off spot and even more of an indication that it could be a long season for Southend, who are rock bottom with two points. Colchester United brought an end to Forest Green Rovers’ unbeaten run with a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Tuesday. 19-year-old Noah Chilvers wasted no time in getting on the score sheet, heading home what proved to be the winner after just 73 seconds. Despite late pressure from Mark Cooper’s side, the U’s held firm to move back in to the top half of the table and drop Rovers to 8th in the process. Late drama ensued at St James Park as Exeter City moved to 9th with a 2-1 win over Crawley Town. The visitor’s first half perseverance paid off when Max Watters drilled his side ahead before the break. As the game progressed, the tide turned. Captain Jake Taylor and talisman CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BOLTON WANDERERS

25 home his eighth goal in all competitions to earn the O’s their first win since the opening day as they’re lifted to 15th. Rovers remain with just one win to their name as they languish in 17th. In a dramatic encounter at Holker Street, Ian Evatt’s Bolton Wanderers grabbed a lastgasp 3-3 draw over old employers Barrow. It originally looked destined to be a miserable night for the Trotters, who were already two goals behind after 4 minutes when Chris Taylor and Mark Jones struck for the hosts. On loan Peter Kioso pulled a goal back shortly after, only for Dior Angus to tap home to restore a healthy advantage. Eoin Doyle and then in the dying embers captain Antoni Sarcevic found the back of the net to conclude a thrilling evening. Barrow, yet to taste victory, are 21st whereas todays visitors are in 20th. ■

Ryan Bowman both slotted home on 77 and 84 respectively to complete the comeback and make it five unbeaten. The Red Devils now occupy 12th with 10 points. Walsall are now the only unbeaten side left in the division, but they had to settle for their 5th draw as they were tied 1-1 away at Bradford City. George Nurse shot the Saddlers ahead with a cannon of a shot from 25 yards on the 23rd minute. They would frustratingly be denied the win when Billy Clarke capitalised from the spot with 15 minutes left of play. A point apiece means Walsall are 10th, whereas Bradford situate 14th. Leyton Orient consigned Tranmere Rovers to further despair after going home from Merseyside with a 1-0 win. Danny Johnson netted the decider in the second half, firing

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— STOP CHASING THE MONEY AND START CHASING THE PASSION TONY HSIEH

It’s over thirty years since we last played Bolton here in the league, an undistinguished rough house of a game after, which an even bigger rough house developed on Coldham’s Common after the game. The fortunes of both clubs have fluctuated alarmingly since that game. The U’s spent nine long years in exile in the Conference, whereas Bolton, under Sam win at all costs Allardyce, enjoyed some very productive years in the Premier League, with Kevin Davies as their battering ram centre forward. He, of course, followed in illustrious footsteps. One-club legend, Nat Lofthouse was, arguably, the greatest centre forward ever seen in British football. Tradition is important to the Trotters, who are founder members of the football league and three time winners of the FA Cup. They have a superb newish ground, players with pedigree and...plenty of debt. Notts County are a fine example of how over-ambitious owners and a long and, at times, highly successful, history is no protection against the natural decline and fall experienced by every club. Not that Manchester United or Liverpool feel inclined to take their chances with the rest of us. Before this season began, the pundits had more or less promoted Bolton, but, as baffled foreign coaches often say, “Football is not like this”. And who would have predicted two 5 nil wins on the road for us? I think its unprecedented. Many of us have waited years for a side like our current line up. Mark Bonner’s creation are both successful and easy on the eye. We can look forward to games, expecting www.cambridge-united.co.uk

entertainment and goals. What a shame that I can’t enjoy all this while standing next to the moaning minnies on the greatest terrace in England. Finally, a word about Harry, or Harrison as he is properly known. He has been kicked, felled, misunderstood and undervalued for years. Now he is in the form of his life and surrounded by players who know that they must give him the ball. Whatever today’s result, the future is bright and it is, most definitely, amber. ■

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet.
