UNITED ——— AGAINST COVID-19 ——— Cambridge United’s due diligence towards reducing risk of COVID-19 transmission continues, with Stadium Manager Ian Darler working with the Team Sprayers to ensure the Abbey Stadium remains sterile. At Cambridge United we feel it’s key to ensure the Football Club are as diligent as ever when it comes to reducing the risk of spreading Coronavirus. Like all businesses during this pandemic, the Football Club is no different in putting in place increasingly important measures to make the Abbey Stadium and the Club’s Clare College training ground facility a covid-19 friendly environment, for players, staff and supporters alike.

AT THE ABBEY STADIUM...

As well as the government recommended guidance including the use of hand gel and track and trace QR codes for all visitors to the Abbey Stadium, the Club have also taken extra measures in recent months. Ian Darler and his ground staff have been spraying down large areas of the ground before and after matchdays that see particularly high footfall by staff and players, such as the tunnel, dugouts, seated areas and offices. The Club have

Cambridge United also recently announced a working partnership to work alongside Shepreth based scientific and apparatus solutions company, Grant Instruments, who have provided the Football Club with the latest air disinfecting technology. The AP360 Air Purifiers have been located subtly in each of the home and away dressing rooms at the Abbey Stadium, working to recycle the air and kill 99.95% of known viruses including Covid-19, which means the U’s are among a very small number of Clubs able to use both their regular changing facilities whilst remaining in accordance within safety and social distancing guidance. CLICK HERE to find out more about the technology by Grant Instruments.

AT THE TRAINING GROUND...

Additional measures have also been put in place at the Club’s training ground. With restrictions resulting in limited use of indoor gym facilities and other indoor areas, the Football Club have therefore have put in place a marquee that can be specifically used for full team meetings and additional gym work by the first team players, whilst allowing the necessary air flow to travel through and reduce risk of spread of the virus. First team players also change across two rooms to ensure that full social distancing can be maintained.

MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————

We welcome Bradford City to the Abbey today having only just recently played them prior to Christmas at Valley Parade. A good insight into the unpredictability of the season is that in the seven games we have played since, Bradford have only played three. You can see the number of postponements and cancellations continue to rise in recent weeks with some horrendous conditions, some of which have really given the playing surfaces a battering which hinders not only matchday but training also. In addition, Covid has also forced a number of cancellations. As it stands we are all testing twice per week which is a welcome addition to monitor everyone’s health and ensure that should anyone test positive we can remove them immediately for the safety of themselves and others and give us the best chance to keep playing. We want our games to remain constant and have as few breaks as possible to allow us to find a rhythm and momentum and we have done this well in the past few weeks at a www.cambridge-united.co.uk

challenging time. Our resilience and effort to score the same number of points in the last six games as the first six of the season is superb and we are all motivated to improve and remain as consistent as possible. One of the major challenges is to keep everybody fit and healthy and with a touch of luck this will help us remain consistent and on track. Tuesday’s win at Southend was hard fought. We weren’t bullied in the end and stood our ground. The ball in play time was by far the lowest of the season and this made it hard to get any flow into the game. In 101 minutes which includes all injury time, the ball was in play for 46 minutes. We had 23 minutes second half to overturn a 1-0 deficit. The boys did well. Your support on ifollow has been amazing with such good numbers keeping us near the top of the table for supporter viewing figures and we recognise and appreciate the support in the team. Stay safe. ■

PAUL BARRY ———— Majority Shareholder ———— Half way through the season and I just wanted to write a short personal note for no other reason than to say thank you to our season ticket holders and also to all our fans. Statement of the obvious but this is a season like no other with so many parts of our community facing hardship and real challenges from Covid. Like every small business it’s been tough for lower league clubs to navigate through this period, and we are no exception at Cambridge United. At a time we really needed it you have stood right behind the Club and given your unconditional support which has been a huge help to our financial health. The Premier League rescue package has been welcome but only went a third of the way to covering ticket revenues for 20/21 so your support has mattered more than ever. But every bit as much as the money, even though you can’t physically be there cheering on and getting behind the team, they know you have their backs. And I know how much that has meant to everyone associated with Cambridge United. I am cautiously optimistic that we can collectively come through and out of this in better shape in the lower leagues after agreeing together some positive steps forward for the future across the EFL. Salary and squad caps can help prevent the boom and bust that has bedevilled many smaller clubs over the last 20 years - ours included - as well as providing a more level financial playing field for competition. And if any reminder was needed the crisis has shown the important part that all Clubs play for their communities. Whether it is on the pitch in terms of the pleasure and pain that we all experience as true fans and which can transform our mood at a stroke, or off it where football has really stepped up to show it is far more than just a game but a force for social good in so many different ways when the country needed it. Speaking for myself this has also been a time to re-evaluate the things that really matter, as www.cambridge-united.co.uk

I am sure it has been for many of you too. My love for Cambridge United has only grown that little bit stronger still over the last 12 months. That love has been fed by your extraordinary support, seeing the great work the Trust is doing day in day out for the community and from the pleasure we have all been able to take from the performances on the pitch. We might be thousands of miles away but Adam, Mark and myself are kicking every ball and celebrating every goal with you all. The vaccine means there is a genuine light for us all at the end of this long tunnel - and at the earliest possible opportunity I will be jumping on a plane to be back at the Abbey again. In the meantime thank you again and Come On You U’s. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Bradford City ———— There or thereabouts, in the promotion mix, in the argument at the end of the season – think of Bradford City and those kind of sentiments immediately spring to mind. Undoubtedly a huge Club, particularly at League Two level, it seems almost inconceivable that the Bantams have been struggling at the wrong end of the division, but as we’ve found out over the last year or so, best laid plans don’t always come to fruition. After finishing ninth in Covid curtailed League Two last term, there were hopes that Stuart McCall could mastermind a better effort this time round, but a bitty start to the season followed by five straight league defeats through November and the start of December

saw McCall depart and ambitions for the campaign reassessed. It always felt like a matter of time, though, before Bradford found their feet and started picking up some consistent results, and interim bosses Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars now seem to have steadied the ship. With half the season still to play and with teams tightly bunched in League Two, who’d bet against them being there or thereabouts again?

THE FORM

Bradford haven’t played for the best part of a month due to Covid interruptions and the weather, but their form prior to their enforced break was on the up. CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BRADFORD CITY

9 A 1-1 draw at Crawley in mid-December stopped the rot and they haven’t lost a game since, recording three wins and a draw in their last four matches. The 1-0 victory against the U’s at Valley Parade a month or so ago was their first win in nine in all competitions and it’s proved a catalyst, with victories at Grimsby and Tranmere followed by a goalless draw at Port Vale. A solid back line seems to have been the foundation for the West Yorkshire side in recent weeks - they’ve kept three clean sheets in their last four games. They’re also unbeaten in three on the road, with an overall away record this season of played 10, won three, drawn two, lost 5.

THE MANAGERS – MARK TRUEMAN AND CONOR SELLARS

The Trueman (and Sellars) show has been a roaring success so far with Bradford yet to taste defeat under their stewardship, but what

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

of the men who have overseen the turnaround in form? Both were academy coaches with the Bantams before being elevated to the hotseat following the departure of Start McCall and his assistant Kenny Black. Sellars started his playing career with Middlesbrough before featuring for Harrogate Town and Tadcaster as well as a spell playing in Portugal. Trueman had a long playing career in the semipro ranks, turning out for the likes of Ossett Town, Guiseley and Brighouse United. The duo were initially named as caretaker bosses, but such has been their impact, they’ve now been named in interim charge until further notice and have been backed to oversee recruitment in the January transfer window. ■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— We have now reached the half way point in the 2020/2021 season. It has been a strange experience for supporters not being able to attend matches. Especially when the team is performing so well on the pitch and being the top of the league. However, it’s now when everyone’s support is even more appreciated. It is wonderful to see how supporters have got behind the club in so many different ways over recent months. It reminds me of the periods when the club was finding things difficult and everyone pulled together and got the club through those times. Hopefully during the coming months, we will remain United in Endeavour. With the latest lockdown in place and no sign of when it will end it is even more important, we all come together and support each other. If you can ring or text someone to make sure they are alright, please do so. You may be the only person they hear from. If you find yourself needing to speak to someone then see the numbers via the ‘You are never alone’ link CLICK HERE Hopefully, now the vaccinations are starting to take place a return to some kind of normality may be possible. It is good to see a company associated with Cambridge United being at the forefront of this programme. I think we all would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to everyone at AstraZeneca for the work that has so far taken place and taking place twentyfour hours a day. 100yearsofcoconuts have launched a project to collect supporter’s memories. If you would like to take part please visit the group’s website for further details. It really is simple to complete and the group will add your replies to their website during the coming weeks. They are also looking for supporters to write articles for the website about Cambridge United. If you would like to do so please email 100yearsofcoconuts@gmail.com There have been a lot of changes at Cambridge Fans United during recent weeks www.cambridge-united.co.uk

with new board members joining. I would like start by saying thank you and show my appreciation to Robert Osbourn who has now stood down as Chair due to ill health. He has helped me a lot over the years and has always been supportive of the ideas I have come up with. I hope everything gets back on track soon for him and he is back to full fitness soon. I would also like to wish Andrew Stephen and Ben Phillips success with their plans in the future. CFU is coming up to being 21 years old this year. It needs to be representative of all supporters and members. During those years Supporters Trusts have had to change and adapt to different situations. Now there so many more ways and possibilities for representing and helping supporters. CAMBRIDGE FANS UNITED ———— Supporters Trust ———— Cambridge Fans United address Cambridge United supporters far and wide following the news that Andrew Stephen and Ben Phillips have become the new Chair and Vice-Chair respectively of the supporters group. For almost all of its life, Cambridge Fans United Supporters Trust have been seen as a kind of RAC for the club coming out in periods of trouble, rallying fans together and working hard at saving the Football Club during difficult times. Hopefully we will never see those dark clouds descend over the Abbey again. CFU, by our own admission in recent times has become a little stagnant by comparison. However, we are hopeful that can change as we look to rise once more with a change of structure that can lead us to become the true voice of our fans. A good supporters’ trust should be run by the fans for the fans and be proactive at working, in a close relationship, with the club to achieve things for fans and continuously look to improve the experience at the Abbey for supporter. We know the Club work hard to do this themselves, but at times there may be a stretch in resources and we want to be there to offer those pair of hands to ensure our supporters are well looked after at all times. In addition, CFU would like to work closely with other fans organisations such as CUSP, Cambridge United Supporters Trust & 100 Years of Coconuts in getting things done for our fans. The Supporters Trust has recently recruited two new faces from their committee to lead things for CFU, in Andrew Stephen as Chair & Ben Phillips as Vice chair, both of whom are passionate fans of Cambridge United, and proactive at trying to achieve things for the greater good of the fans and the club. We believe that working together we can steer CFU in a better direction for the fanbase. We have already started to build a working relationship with both Paul Barry & Ian Mather at the Football Club who, after recent meetings, are supportive of the new leadership of the fans’ trust. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

The heartbeat of a football club is its fan base and without fans a football club is nothing. In the current climate and modern day, it’s important more now than ever for a club and the organisations attached to it to communicate efficiently with you the fans. Andy and Ben both know the importance of this and will make sure fans’ voices are heard when needed, regardless of age or background. Ben is keen to see the football club and CFU engage with younger fans more and to see young supporters become actively more involved in having a say about the football club they all love. He would like to work closely with the football club on various projects but, in particular, is keen to see something like the old Junior U’s scheme resurrected that ensures there are a new generation of fans always coming to support Cambridge United. Shortly Cambridge Fans United Supporters Trust will be announcing an exciting new membership scheme, with exclusive incentives for new & existing members. In particular we would like to see more young fans aged between 16 years to 25 become annual members of Cambridge Fans United Supporters’ Trust, as with your support as CFU members we can work together at continuing to improve things off the pitch at the Abbey and continue to make sure their Cambridge United flourishes for years to come. During these difficult times, we are determined to support the Foodbank and other initiatives which make the lonely, the vulnerable and the isolated feel part of the Community. The club, which is at the heart of its community is in a unique position to improve morale and to make individuals feel that everybody matters. We hope also to attract more people to the Lottery which has provided a lot of essential support and equipment for the club. In these straightened times we will do all we can to find new ways of providing new income streams while making sure that all fans’ interests are served. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Welcome back to the Abbey after another fortnight away and, amongst others, a couple of pretty lucrative trips Essex way. It’s only January but so what? Are we mathematically safe now?! The games are so thick and fast the mighty U’s never seem far away.

MUCH TO TREASURE IN THE PROGRAMME ATTACHED, A SECOND VISIT TO OLD TRAFFORD AS A RESULT, FOR A LOT OF US ANYWAY AND NICE TO REMIND GARY LINEKER AND HIS ILK THAT LITTLE OLD CAMBRIDGE UTD STILL EXIST

CLICK below Tuesday evening will see us head Salford way which, coming back to today, how blinking appropriate is that? 23 January 2015……. ring any bells, anyone? The Habbin looked truly, beautifully stuffed that night, my abiding memory of the evening. I think if we’re all honest it is not difficult to look back to those days with mixed feelings, particularly the way subsequent events transpired and just ten months later the manager (or whatever he ended up being called) had gone. Still, much to treasure in the programme attached, a second visit to Old Trafford as a result, for a lot of us anyway and nice to remind Gary Lineker and his ilk that little old Cambridge Utd still exist. And probably a swansong for a certain goalie that Friday evening. The scariest thing for me? It’s six years ago now! Enjoy without reservation. Finally, on this day in 1900 the second Boer War ended in defeat for British forces against troops from the South African Republic and Orange Free State. The battle was better known as the Battle of Spion Kop……..you see there is always a football reference in life somewhere if you look hard enough! Bye for now. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

CUCT are running a challenge for local children aged 5-7 in which we’d like them to write a letter to Marvin the Moose. In this letter, children can tell Marvin about themselves, what their favourite things are, and they can even ask Marvin a question or draw a picture. Marvin will respond to all letters and we’ll share pictures that children have drawn on our social media.

TACKLING LONELINESS PROJECT

24 hours we received over 500 requests from families for footballs. This has led to us needing to source more footballs. We’re fortunate to have had support from the City Council who have provided 100 more, along with kind donations from members of the community,

Harrogate Town’s backline held firm to see out a stalemate against Exeter City at the EnviroVent Stadium on Tuesday night. Despite seeing a large percentage of the ball, the visitors couldn’t capitalise on their first-half dominance. They had a further advantage on the 73rd minute when Sulphurite defender Warren Burrell received his second yellow card in the space of six minutes, but Simon Weaver’s men came under little threat as they grabbed an integral point which situates them in 18th. It was the first time in 15 League Two outings that the Grecians had drawn a blank, they now haven’t won in four and slip to 10th. ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
