Fan noticeboard WELCOME After a difficult week on the road, we are back at home and it feels so good. Back-to-back away games to Accrington and Plymouth were always likely to test the team and test the team they did. The U’s performed valiantly over both games and to bring back a point is the least that they deserve. Here’s hoping that we get that first win this afternoon in-front of our supporters. I hope you enjoy the Programme.

MarkHeadBonner coach It is great to be back at The Abbey after a long week on the roads and railways. A double away day at opposite ends of the country is an obvious challenge and meant for a few long days. The country is certainly back to pre-pandemic levels in terms of traffic and hotel occupancy. We travelled by coach on Friday to Accrington, staying overnight and returning home after the game. Sunday was a recovery day and then we trained in preparation for Plymouth on Monday morning. Our timetable for Plymouth was something different to normal for us. We began at the training ground, hopping on the mini-bus to the train station, heading to Kings Cross. From Kings Cross we jumped the underground to Paddington and despite the fear of the two previous trains being cancelled, we boarded to train to Plymouth at 12:04hrs. On arrival we had a coach waiting for us to take us to our hotel. It was a quick turnaround with pre-match food and a nap before heading to the game. On Wednesday, after a late breakfast and a dip in the sea for any who fancied it, we did the reverse journey to get home. When you consider the toll these longer travel days can take, I was really pleased with the team for their work ethic, the start they made in both games and the concentration shown. To throw in our injury issues at centre-back with Jubril, Lloyd and now Greg, we adjusted very well and showed the resilience and strength we need to. Tuesday was full blooded, hard and gritty. I thought we were excellent in the first half and had good control of the game and looked a threat with the ball. In the second half, Plymouth showed their quality and put us under huge pressure. We found it hard to get out and were forced deeper. The goal was coming, but the fight to stay in the game and get a point despite a very nervy finish was a reward for the player’s commitment and togetherness. There were similar situations at Accrington and with a really strong finish, we

just ran out of time! We are learning all the time and are enjoying the challenges. Another tough one comes today against a team with a 100% record. We will need to find a top level today. To the supporters who travelled to Plymouth and got behind us, wow! Thank you for taking on that trip midweek and your support all game. It makes a huge difference. We have to create that between the team and the supporters. Finally, we wish Greg Taylor a speedy recovery. He is a major character in our squad and been a huge part of the team in the past year. He is a top leader and we need him with us. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO

Welcome to Burton Albion on their first visit to the Abbey since 2015. The Brewers have got off to a heady start to the season with three wins out of three in the league. After our trips to Accrington and Plymouth the team (and a number of fans) have travelled 1,000 miles in the space of four days. It was great to see, and hear, such strong support from the 323 U’s fans who made it up to Lancashire and the 214 who made it to South Devon. One point from two tough away games. We move on. Nearly 1,000 fans watched the Plymouth game on IFollow thanks to an agreement reached between EFL clubs. All midweek fixtures will be available on IFollow this season. Not only does this allow far more people to see the game, it is a real help financially. Unlike last year the deal in League 1 is that the club that sells the pass keeps the revenue. For every £10.00 pass, after deducting a modest admin charge and VAT, we get £6.66. For home games we do, of course, want as many fans to come to The Abbey as possible, but the midweek pass will mean that those who, for many reasons, can’t get to be in the ground can see the game and support your club.

If you can’t get to one of our away games, then do go along to support St Neots. We have a number of loan players there and the team is managed by our own Pete Gill. The club is very friendly and has great facilities. Any U’s season ticket holder can go for free. Season ticket holders can also watch our women’s team for free. Home games are usually on a Sunday and are also at St Neots. Our next game is v Enfield this Sunday – Kick off 2.00pm. In my last note I explained that our catering operation is now being run in partnership with Wilson Vale. They have taken over all catering, management of the bars and the tea bars. We are planning some improvements to the tea bars, to include the installation of “Zip taps” to give endless boiling water. This will speed up service (and make better tea). We are also replacing the chip and pin card machines which should reduce queuing further. The three white freestanding outlets are under separate control and are run by Premier Catering. Back to this afternoon. The last time we played Burton was in the EFL trophy last season. We won 2-4. Get ready to cheer and enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Latest News Mitov wins Player of the Round

The United #1 pulled off a number of impressive saves throughout the 90 minutes, before making two saves during the penalty shoot-out. Mitov picked up 47% of the vote, beating out Kion Etete of Northampton Town, Ryan Hardie of Plymouth Argyle and Salford City’s Josh Morris. United in Learning Returns

The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) and Cambridge United Football Club’s charity – Cambridge United Community Trust (CUCT), are delighted to announce their intention to provide four more 100% tuition fee bursaries for the upcoming 2021/2022 academic year. The courses cover a wide range of subjects in areas as diverse as science and medicine, coaching, business and management, creative writing and philosophy. There are so many different courses eligible for the new bursaries and no existing academic qualifications are required for our Undergraduate Certificate courses – they are open to all. United in Learning is one of several programmes that ICE is currently implementing to widen access to the university’s adult courses, particularly among

groups of people who could benefit from further study, but, for various reasons, tend not to apply. A number of the programmes are being run in collaboration with organisations that, like the Community Trust, have strong community outreach links, and can help to maximise their impact. The Undergraduate Certificates will start in the 2021/22 and are all delivered on a part-time basis. Eligible applicants should be over 18, have a connection with Cambridge United Football Club or the Community Trust and do not already hold a recognised higher education level qualification and have limited financial means. Applicants should apply for a bursary before making an application for a place on one of the designated Undergraduate Certificate courses on offer in Autumn 2021, through the ICE online application portal. The deadline for bursary applications is Monday 6th September. They will need to send in a 300-word personal statement describing how receiving a bursary would benefit them and their proposed course of study at ICE. They will also need to provide evidence of their financial circumstances (income). Applications will be assessed by a panel from ICE and Cambridge United. Full details of all courses are available on the ICE website. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors BURTON ALBION Burton Albion are back at the Abbey Stadium for the first time since 2015, when a 3-2 win for the visitors on the final day of the season capped off a stunning season for the Brewers who finished as League Two Champions, under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. After leaving the Club for QPR the following season, Hasselbaink returned to Burton five years later, on New Year’s Day 2021, and he picked up right where he left off, leading the team on a remarkable survival bid. When he rejoined the Club, Burton were eight points adrift of safety but a run of results that included 9 wins from 12 helped steer the Brewers away from the relegation zone to confirm their League One status with three games remaining. Over the course of the Summer Hasselbaink

10

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BURTON ALBION

brought in 12 new signings and with his newly refreshed squad has made a strong start to the season, winning both of their opening league games. A 1-0 win away at Shrewsbury on the opening day was followed up with a 2-1 win at home to Ipswich Town, as Club legend Lucas Akins scored a late penalty to consign the Tractor Boys to defeat. Since signing from Stevenage in 2014, Akins has gone on to become Burton’s top appearance maker and goal scorer for the Club in the EFL, with 287 league appearances and 63 goals. With last season’s momentum, the previous success under Hasselbaink and a strong squad full of experience, the Brewers will be aspiring for a successful season and another promotion to the Second Tier of English Football. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES This afternoon we welcome Burton Albion to the Abbey Stadium. Burton Albion were formed in 1950 initially joining the Birmingham & District League, before switching to the Southern League eight years later. Having made speedy progress through the leagues they were as recently as 2018 playing in the Championship. The memory that most Cambridge United supporters will share is one when two sides met each other in the Conference League Semi-Finals in 2008. United came out on top over the two legs on that occasion to reach Wembley. My abiding memory from the first leg was my son losing his watch and then being given it back several days later at the return match by another supporter who had found it on the terraces amongst the yellow pages. The painstaking planning and preparation of collecting the books, shredding them and then getting the pieces ready for the evening was every bit worth it. Whatever happened to Yellow Pages. During the summer the decision was made concerning the organisation of the supporters away travel being moved to Cambridge Fans United (CFU). The group are maintaining links with Greys of Ely to provide the coaches. The first trip was arranged last weekend when we played against Accrington Stanley and then followed on Tuesday with Plymouth. The organisers are hoping to run coaches to all matches this season if there is enough interest and demand to do so. Coach seats to Millwall, Doncaster and Portsmouth matches are now on line and can be booked by following the link here or you can email cfuawaytravel@ yahoo.com for more details. CFU are running the service for supporters and are not looking to make money from it. Anyone wanting to sponsor the coach service for either a match or the whole season can find out more by emailing cfuawaytravel@ yahoo.com If you prefer use this QR code

Talking about QR codes. When arriving at any turnstile on match day. If you have a black background on your phone you will need to switch it to a white one. This is done via the phone settings or you will need to open the ticket attachment that was sent to you when making the order. The scanners cannot read a QR code if it is on a black background. This is because the code blends into the background and is unreadable. Another change that took effect during the summer was the opening hours for the Cambridge United Club Shop at the Abbey Stadium. It is now open twice a week and, on all Home, Matchdays Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am until 3:30pm. On Home Matchdays, the Club Shop is open from 9:30am until Kick-Off and then after the final whistle for a short period of time. Supporters can also buy merchandise from the Club’s new Grand Arcade store - open everyday - Tickets and merchandise are also available online from CUFCDirect.com. Please look after yourself and enjoy following the team home and away this season. You can contact me via dave.matthewjones@cambridge-united.co.uk or follow what is happening via the www.facebook.com/ CambridgeUnitedFootballClub facebook site www.cambridgefansunited.org websiteor via twitter SLO@ CambridgeUTD If you would like to report a broken seat/ bench in the Main or South Stands please contact the club by using the e-form below. You can also report any facility issues as well via the form and we will endeavor to repair or address it as soon as we can via the link here. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Afternoon and welcome to this afternoon’s football fare including our visitors from the beer and Marmite town of Burton. It has been a while since our last League game against the Brewers, May 2015, right at the end of our inaugural season back in the EFL. The away side prevailed in each fixture that season, I have good memories of that Friday evening in October at the Pirelli Stadium and thought we were good value for our 3-1 victory. Elliott and Donaldson, eh? As you know, the Conference years are a blur to oneself although a certain Lee McEvilly free-kick sticks in the mind and ensured we didn’t tread water at the Pirelli in the Play-Off Semi Final that balmy evening in May 2008. That guy, by the way, has a decent roll call of clubs if you care to take a look! He is retired now, I think, but if he is reading he will correct me, I am sure. From beer to footwear, as we slide back to the early 1970s for today’s archive programme and our second season in the Football League, with the visit of Northampton Town on 21st

August 1971. It was our third outing against the Cobblers since joining the big boys, the inaugural season had seen us being doubled in a relative shoe-ing, 4-1 on aggregate. The game at the County Ground the previous August was our very first away league fixture in Division Four. Anyway, the rot stopped that afternoon with a creditable 1-1 draw in front of a good derby crowd of 5,638 and our goal coming from the blonde bombshell Chris Foote, just his second of six league goals in a four season spell with us. Not known for his headers, though. Did you know that on this day in 1911, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre by three Italian handymen! It took two years to recover it and no doubt the episode added to its mystique. It had though been around since 1503, remember. Enjoy the old programme and today’s game! ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen

“It is never too late to be what you might have been” There have been times when I have been quite certain that the Pirelli Stadium is the coldest place on Earth. A number of times I have been reluctant to leave the relative warmth of the bar under the away stand to brave the Arctic breezes outside in order to watch some pretty forgettable football which I can see equally well on the screen indoors. On rare occasions we have managed to win there and once, having been 2-0 down in a play-off semi-final there, I walked down the steps to re-join my family just as Lee McEvilly scored the first his two goals which sent us back to the Abbey level. I enjoyed the home leg just as much. I never thought that Burton would escape from the Conference but Nigel Clough dragged them, division by division, into the Football League, a quite brilliant achievement. Against the odds they became a force to be reckoned with. Their stadium always seemed half empty and devoid of atmosphere but a game against Manchester United seemed to change all that. Parking there, or finding a welcoming pub, was never a problem and it seemed that most of the locals were entirely indifferent to football. The town was always better known for its beer production but I must confess to having a soft spot for the place having completed my second teaching practice there in a suburb called Stapenhill. At that time, they were still using steam engines on the sidings at the Bass factory. How time flies.

Just a few years before that, we acquired a tall rangy centre forward called Ian Hutchinson. Apart from anything else he invented the long throw by using his arms in a kind of windmill motion. He scored some goals for us too before going to play for Chelsea where he made a name for himself as one of the bravest forwards ever to play the game. He was wonderfully skilled too. In those days it seemed highly unlikely that either club would ever appear in the Championship and yet both clubs did. It is part of the enduring romance of the game that such a thing was possible. It is what all fans of so called little teams dream about. Fairy tale endings like that seem less likely in today’s money orientated game but that prospect is why we are all here today. Burton under Jimmy Floyd will be a tough prospect this afternoon but so will we. We played well against a very good Accrington Stanley side and we are still learning. We will soon turn good performances into results. I hope that we start with Smith and Ironside up-front but then I have always taken the Ron Atkinson view. Fear no one! ■

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP Tense encounters, late drama, unfathomable sitters and some calamitous clangers, the midweek action had pretty much everything. As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of Sky Bet League One. Portsmouth maintained their 100% start to the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Fratton Park. Summer signing Ryan Tunnicliffe struck after just 120 seconds to send Pompey to the summit and consign the Shrews to the basement with not a single point or goal to their name. Today’s opponents, Burton Albion, occupy 2nd and also boast three consecutive wins after churning out a 1-0 win over Lee Johnson’s Sunderland. Jonny Smith struck the winning goal midway through the second half for the Brewers, who now attain 16 wins in 27 league games since Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink took charge in January. A first loss for the Black Cats, they stay on 6 points. There was delirium at the death for Wycombe Wanderers - who snatched a 1-1 draw over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium. Callum Lang’s emphatic finish moments after half-time looked to be the difference, that was until Anthony Stewart popped up in injury time to preserve the Chairboys’ unbeaten start to the season. The Latics, on the other hand, have been steady and experienced all three outcomes thus far. Lee Gregory marked his Sheffield Wednesday debut with an early winner for the unbeaten Owls, who assuringly beat Fleetwood Town 1-0 at Hillsborough. Early days, but that’s seven points from three for Darren Moore’s men. It’s a contrasting atmosphere for the Cod Army nonetheless, who’ve lost for the third game on the trot.

22

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BURTON ALBION

Oxford United made it back-to-back home wins and rose to 5th after earning a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra. James Henry’s 33rd minute penalty was the decisive moment for the U’s, who were made to work for maximum points in a cagey affair. The Railwaymen remain on the hunt for a first win, possessing just the solitary point. In a battling encounter, a sublime 40-yard goal from Michael Smith was enough to secure Rotherham a 1-0 victory over newcomers Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium. The moment of magic deservedly took the plaudits for the Millers, who occupy 6th position and will look to further stamp their authority. The Shrimps’ desire leaves them in good stead – four points is a creditable return from a challenging start. An unfortunate Pontus Dahlberg own goal handed Accrington Stanley a 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in a tense affair at the Wham Stadium. The howler occurred just three minutes into the game and was enough to separate the sides, with John Coleman’s climbing to 7th and forcing the continuation of a miserable start for Richie Wellens, whose side were condemned to a third straight loss. Antoni Sarcevic secured Bolton Wanderers’ first win of the season with a 77th minute winner to sink Lincoln City 1-0 at the LNER Stadium. Finding themselves in 9th and still unbeaten, Ian Evatt’s side have been entertaining to say the least. They’ve scored the most (7) but also top the charts for most conceded (6). The Imps gave a strong account of themselves but rued missed chances as they settle for 13th. Paul Kalambayi’s 97th minute equaliser sparked euphoria for 10-man Gillingham, who snatched a point in a 1-1 draw against unbeaten AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane. After David Tutonda had received his marching orders with 18 minutes remaining,

a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road. Despite taking a 9th minute lead through a fine Matt Penney strike, an implausible Macauley Bonne sitter moments after took the stuffing out of the Tractor Boys, who fell behind to second half attempts from Callum Wright and Will Boyle. The Robins’ first win sees them in 15th, with Paul Cook’s side forced to wait in 19th. Cambridge United returned home from Plymouth Argyle with a 1-1 draw after a valiant display. A thumping volley from talented youngster Luke Jephcott gave the Pilgrims the lead on the 68th minute, but the U’s showed perseverance to claw a share of the spoils thanks to a penalty follow-up from Joe Ironside, the only player to score in all 3 opening League games thus far. ■ Owen Mizon

the hosts capitalised shortly after through Ollie Palmer, but were cruelly denied the three points when Kalambayi’s attempt nestled in to give the Gills their second point. MK Dons came from behind to defeat Charlton Athletic 2-1 at Stadium MK and hand Liam Manning his first victory in charge. The travellers led after 15 minutes thanks to a Jayden Stockley header, but an instant reply from loanee Troy Parrot inspired the hosts to kick on and deliver success in the second half when Mo Eisa was on hand to tap home and send his side to 12th. With a single point to their name, Nigel Adkins will be eager for an instant response from the Addicks. Ipswich Town’s unsatisfactory start to the campaign continued after they surrendered

A third goal from his first three league games from Joe Ironside rescued a point for U’s in Plymouth during a hotly-contested match at Home Park… A match that was never far from controversy and incident, United fought back from a losing position after Jephcott’s 68th minute opener, through Ironside’s rebounded penalty. The result means that Cambridge return home on Saturday from a gruelling week on the road with something to show and two points from their opening three games.

Academy UPDATE With the season now underway for the First Team, our U18’s are returned to action in the Youth Alliance League, with games against both Sutton and AFC Wimbledon. Both matches ended in draws but there were reasons to be optimistic for the U’s, as Jimmy Unwin details below:

U18’s Match Report - Sutton United

This game threw up some really different challenges for the group, playing against a low block that was either 5-4-1 or 5-2-3, which saw us struggle to get any room in behind. Sutton continually slowed the game down and ball in play time was a lot lower than we wanted.

26

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V BURTON ALBION

With that being said, we did carve out some good opportunities accumulating 18 attempts on goal throughout the match, unfortunately most of these were directed straight at the Sutton keeper. We finally scored from a corner with Beckett heading home a McConnell delivery but the score was back to evens a short time later after failing to deal with a long throw. For the amount of chances we created it was a disappointing result and moving forwards we have to be more clinical in front of goal. We play AFC Wimbledon next week and Luton the week after, so hopefully we can improve on this front and get some good results.

The U16’s have also been back in action spending some of their pre-season at Oakham school where across three days they played the likes of Sunderland, Norwich, Dundee and Leicester. You can look forward to an U16’s match report over the coming weeks as they will play the likes of Nottingham Forest and more importantly Stevenage in the local derby. Alongside the U16’s and U18’s getting their

seasons up and running, we welcomed our schoolboys back following their summer break. In the coming week they will play fixtures against Charlton, West Ham and Colchester as the young U’s get stuck into the season. Lastly if you have any requests, or anything you would want to know in the Academy Update please don’t hesitate to contact academy@cambridge-united.co.uk ■

Women UPDATE Over the past few weeks, Cambridge United Women have been working hard both in and out of training in preparation for the start of the 21/22 season, which begun last Sunday for the First Team. The team travelled down to face Actonians, where a second half goal for the home side succumbed the U’s to an opening day defeat. The first half showed real promise, with Emma Jenkins nearly giving United the lead with a volley from outside the box, but the Actonians keeper managed to maintain the 0-0 score-line. With the scores level at half-time, everything was to play for going into the second half but after Sam Khan hit the crossbar, Actonians took the lead from an unmarked back-post run, connecting to a delivery into the box. After the game, Darren Marjoram said “All of the players were really disappointed to lose,

especially as we dominated the first half and had good chances to score in the game. There is lots for us still to learn to make sure we are equally as effective in both boxes for the full game. It is a tough defeat to take, but also positives to take into this week.” The Development side continued their pre-season fixtures with an exciting, goalfilled game against Newmarket Town last Wednesday night, winning 5-0 and a 3-2 defeat at Royston Town on Sunday. The First Team face their first home league game of the new season on Sunday, against Enfield at St Neots Town FC and all Cambridge United Season Ticket Holders can gain free entry. ■

Upcoming First Team Fixtures: ENFIELD TOWN Sunday 22nd August, 2pm @ St Neots Town Football Club • Adults: £3 • Under 16s: Free • CUFC Season Ticket Holders: Free • St Neots Season Ticket Holders: Free

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE

CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman After travelling 974 miles over the past week, courtesy of long trips to Accrington and Plymouth, it is rather nice to just have my short two-mile bike ride to the Abbey to have to contend with this afternoon, as the U’s return to action on home soil. It was great to see so many fans clad in black and amber last Saturday at Stanley’s quirkily named Wham Stadium. An open away terrace is a bit of a rarity these days in the Football League, so I am sure the supporters that did travel, were pleased to see the rain hold off until after 5.00pm! Despite a frustrating defeat, no doubt it was exciting to be back on the road, seeing friends and enjoying the traditional away day, which had seemed a distant memory over the past 18 months.

“This noise created by the 10,500 crowd at Plymouth was silenced at times by the support from the away end, which it was brilliant to be able to hear” The same could be said for the trip to Plymouth on Tuesday, when many hardy souls journeyed to Devon. They were duly rewarded with a point after an extremely hard-working and resilient performance from the U’s, who showed all the qualities that have made Mark Bonner’s men so difficult to beat since he has been in charge. This noise created by the 10,500 crowd at Plymouth was silenced at times by the support from the away end, which it was brilliant to be able to hear, even high up in the press box at Home Park, so I would imagine a few hoarse voices were in need of lubrication on Wednesday morning! The downside to Tuesday was, of course, the enforced withdrawal of Greg Taylor after he fell

awkwardly during the first half. As I sit writing this piece in a hotel room in Plymouth, there is no news on the extent of his injury, but all will be keeping their fingers crossed that it is not too serious. After making 356 appearances and counting for United, Greg has become a talismanic Captain and, his presence on and off the pitch will always be felt, regardless of however long he is on the sidelines, so we all wish him well and a speedy recovery. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

CFU Corner Ben Phillips & Andrew Stephen For a long time now we have thought football clubs should find ways to demonstrate that they are more diverse and welcoming to people of all backgrounds. CFU has worked tirelessly in the last 12 months, and continues to do so, to assist Cambridge United to show that they are a diverse and inclusive football club. This has involved a number of different projects. During Lockdown one of the club’s photographers, Ben Phillips, came up with a creative photography project called “Your City, Your Shirt”. Learning about the difficulties that certain groups of people face in football, from groups like Fans for Diversity, Football Supporters Association and Kick It Out, Ben wanted to find ways to show that Cambridge United is a welcoming club for everyone, regardless of their background. “I photographed as many people as possible from all backgrounds and walks of life proudly wearing the U’s shirt,” Ben said. “The idea was to highlight the diversity amongst the club’s fan base and show the multi-cultural nature of the city we live in. Cambridge United is at the heart of a city, that is friendly and welcoming for everyone to enjoy.” Alongside this creative project, CFU has also initiated other events, most notably the partnership that CFU has set up with Cambridge Mosque. Members of CFU attended the mosque during Ramadan and provided provisions to help members of the mosque during the Ramadan period, with support from Anwar Uddin at Fans for Diversity. Last week, CFU members visited the Mosque dignitaries, this time for a meeting about how they can consolidate the relationship between the two parties. They attended with the League Two Promotion Trophy and took staff members from the Cambridge United Community Trust along to discuss how they can work with the community who attend the mosque and help one another. CFU has also recently worked with the Community Trust to establish a BAME specific

football session which the Trust coaches are delivering in the community, and CFU have provided funding for this by sponsoring the session. Cambridge Fans United are on a mission to make the Abbey Stadium a place where everybody feels welcome and safe. They recently helped set up a social space, the Amber Belles, where female fans can chat openly about our wonderful club. It is hoped CFU can help support the group in a number of projects for female fans going forward. The group is open to anyone - regardless of gender - who supports our aims. The Amber Belles have already started to arrange their first social with a meeting with the Lincoln City female group, Lady Imps Supporters Association (LISA) when they visit the Abbey for our fixture on 11th September. The LISA group have over 1,200 members and it will be a great opportunity for the Amber Belles to pick their brains and share ideas which will allow them to grow going forward. Fans Groups are as relevant to all supporters with or without a crisis at the Club. The pandemic has shown that our society is ripe for change. Football Clubs and their followers are powerful mechanisms for change, change that will benefit all of us. The Future is bright, The Future is Amber! Enjoy today’s game ■
