MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— Over six months have passed since our last League fixture at the Abbey when Carlisle United came to town. We welcome them again today and wish them well for the challenging season ahead of us all. We hope to fare better today than last time out. The long off season and lockdown period was challenging for players to remain motivated and fit with such uncertainty ahead of this season. We have been pleased with the physical condition that the squad returned in, which enabled us to get straight into competitive football sessions once the COVID protocols around returning to training in small numbers were complete. We are hopeful that we can continue to build our fitness over the coming weeks and need to keep as many of the squad available for selection as often as possible. In some respects, the extended break may have allowed greater time for tired bodies to repair, injuries to heal, and minds to relax and recharge. We are happy with how the players are working and creating an environment that is competitive and professional. The new arrivals have integrated into our way of working

seamlessly and I am expecting those players to make a real impact on our team and a positive impression on you. Pre-season has been shorter than usual, and to have already completed two competitive fixtures prior to today is an unusual turn of events. But that is the year we are in. There will be many more firsts, many more challenges, and many more unpredictable events ahead. For us, we need to be adaptable and show impeccable temperament to cope with the unplanned and unexpected. Tuesday night against Fulham allowed some of the players who have played less time in the past fortnight to gain important competitive minutes on the pitch. The work and physical commitment from that group of players was excellent and we go in to today with a fit squad, raring to go and all keen to contribute to the team. With our squad, everyone has a part to play and needs to be ready. The past two games have been really good challenges that have tested our organisation and fitness. We have had less possession in both games than we would like but our challenges since the first game at MK Dons CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V CARLISLE UNITED

Ian————Mather CEO ———— This has been a year of firsts. There was a time earlier this year when it seemed possible that we wouldn’t be welcoming any team to the Abbey for a long time. It is therefore with some relief that we can host Carlisle United to the first game of the season. We look forward to a time next year when their travelling fans will be able to join us. This is the Clubs’ first ever digital programme. When we planned it we were working on the basis that fans would not be allowed into watch the game. As all who read this will be well aware, we were due to have supporters at this game but that all changed on Wednesday evening with the new restrictions being put in place. Had we had fans present the digital option was still a good one. It removes the physical contact involved in selling printed programmes. This is a trial and the printed version may return when we are back to more normal times. In mid-March no one could have predicted that our away game v Leyton Orient was going to be the last of 2019/20. Events moved rapidly from that point with lockdown being imposed shortly afterwards. Football to furlough in a matter of days. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Covid has tested all of us. Here at the Abbey we felt the impact quickly. Most of our staff were placed on furlough and, in recognition of the financial consequences of the virus, all volunteered to accept a 20% cut in pay. Our youth football programme – Regional Development Centres, Goalkeeping and Girls football managed the cancellation of tours and communicated well with parents and young players. The first team squad stayed at home and worked on fitness programmes that had been devised for them. Our energy was channelled into supporting our community through the Here For U’s Scheme. You can read more about that later in this programme from Sam Gomarsall. Some remained at work: Ian Darler and Mick Brown looked after the pitch and did much needed stadium maintenance. The accounts team produced numerous financial scenarios. Kit Brunswick in the Academy, Meanwhile Gareth in the shop delivered a special edition of our shirt, sourced facemasks and handled the launch of our new kit. The Club returned from hibernation with the players and most staff returning from Furlough at the beginning of August. Then came the opportunity to work with EFL and Movement Strategies on the project to get fans back into stadiums. That led to us, on Tuesday, being the first club in the UK to stage a competitive game in front of fans post lockdown. This called for a huge effort from our staff and volunteers. Our fans also played their part. The feedback from Tuesday night has been very positive. In the US Paul Barry agreed to transfer a minority stake in the Club to Adam Webb and Mark Green. This brought in a timely investment to secure our future through this troubled time. We look forward to welcoming them both to the Abbey. And, through all of this Mark Bonner and the football staff have reshaped the team and had a really impressive (if very short) pre-season and two competitive wins with clean sheets. It has been a challenging time but this is a club we can all be proud of. As the new season starts we should look forward with confidence. When fans are allowed back we know we are ready to welcome you with systems in place. Hopefully this will not be too far away. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— CARLISLE UNITED ———— It is perhaps rather apt that Carlisle United return to the Abbey Stadium this afternoon to kick off the new 2020/21 season, having been the last visitors in League Two action before Covid-19 prematurely ended the last campaign. It may be a familiar fixture but the U’s certainly face a different looking Carlisle outfit this afternoon. The Cumbrians arrive harbouring ambitions of a much stronger season, having made a whole host of changes across their first team playing squad under the stewardship of Chris Beech. Having suffered back to back defeats in the Cup competitions leading into this afternoon’s fixture, the former Rochdale and Huddersfield

midfielder will be desperate for his side to step off on the right foot for their League season.

PRE-SEASON FORM

The Cumbrians enjoyed a testing pre-season schedule, beginning with an opening 1-1 draw against Gateshead F.C in mid-August, before prevailing with a 1-2 win against League One Wigan which saw new addition Gima Toure and Lewis Alessandra register goals. The latter was on the scoresheet in their third friendly, which saw Carlisle lose out to Sunderland 3-1 at the Stadium of Light. And their pre-season ended with a 4-1 defeat against Liverpool’s U23s. In the Carabao Cup, the Cumbrians were knocked out by fellow League Two outfit CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V CARLISLE UNITED

9 Oldham Athletic 3-0, and in the week their EFL Trophy campaign got off to a losing start as Fleetwood Town took the spoils 1-3 at Brunton Park on Tuesday night.

Interview ———— ROBBIE CUNDY ———— UNITED’S HEADING-MACHINE DELIGHTED TO HAVE SET THE 2020/21 SEASON OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT. The centre-back wasted absolutely no time in making himself known to the U’s after his arrival on loan from Bristol City in the summer. The defender took just 18 minutes to register his first goal for the Club, in what proved to be the decisive moment of the U’s First Round Carabao Cup win over Birmingham City last Saturday. Cundy explained the extended wait for match minutes during the break from competitive action, made the moment all the more sweet. “He said: “Firstly the delivery was on the money from Hanno (Luke Hannant), and I’m hoping he can pick me out a few more times throughout the season so that I can score a few more!

“It was my first start in a game for seven months, so it’s felt like a long time coming. In all honesty, I was expecting to just do my best to get through the full 90 minutes, without any problems. To get the goal, the winning goal, was just the cherry on top of the cake.” Cundy, who was called into action late by Head Coach Mark Bonner, stepped into play a crucial role at the heart of United’s defence as well, which kept its third consecutive clean sheet. The 23-year old describes the joy at playing his part in a team defensive effort, that he felt was never really troubled by their higher ranked opponents on the afternoon. “It really was a great start for all of the boys, who were brilliant from the top of the pitch to the bottom. The strikers tracked back constantly, the communication was brilliant across the team and being in the middle of that defence, I felt we were hard to break down. “In fact Birmingham, never realised threatened us in behind all afternoon, which was a real positive for the defensive unit and the whole team played their part in that. It gives us big confidence to have done that against a Championship side, and we have been able to carry that forward into Tuesday and the start of the League.” The centre-half sites the excellent ability to communicate and the high number of leaders amongst U’s ranks, as an exciting attribute to have as a team moving into the start of the season. “Greg is obviously the skipper and you can see why. He’s a great communicator. Then again, a lot of the boys in this team are. Paul Digby is another, and alongside Liam O’Neil they both screened our defence well last week. “That communication and leadership certainly rubs off into your performance, when you have a lot of the boys shouting encouragement when you need it and maintaining the CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— Back in March when football matches ceased to be played and lockdown began, no one knew how long it would take or what would be required before crowds would once again be allowed into grounds. No one could have seen how much our lives were about to change or for how long. No one could have forecast the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic on everyone’s lives and lifestyles. Sadly, as we watch the match today there will be supporters we stood next to on match days over the years who will no longer be coming through the turnstiles. Carol Looker, Duncan Stanley, Ian Kirk, Peter Shipp, Keith Hood, Ron Peachey and Roger Rawlings are among those who sadly passed away during the recent period. Our thoughts are with their families and friends. If I have missed anyone please let me know. For a long period during the spring and summer there was no talk of supporters returning to grounds. The earliest expected date for return was going to be sometime in 2021 or when a vaccine was developed. This week after almost six months we have started our return to matches and grounds. It has taken a huge amount of work to reach this point. This has been done here by a small www.cambridge-united.co.uk

team behind the scenes. Firstly, just the idea of having a match again had to be overcome. Would it be behind closed doors or with supporters? What would be required to put the match on? The planning, the logistics, the application of getting the game on would all take time. Reams of paperwork and hundreds of emails asking questions and raising issues that needed to be answered. No one had any past experience or knowledge. The Club is learning as they go along and doing a fantastic job. As supporters we all have our own role to play. We can ensure their time and work has not been wasted. We need to adhere to and follow the safety rules that have been put in place. We need to make sure we can adapt to the changes and possibly change our match day routines. We also have responsibilities towards our fellow supporter’s health and well-being. I am sure no one will want matches to be played behind closed doors. Football matches need atmosphere. Football matches need noise and passion. Football matches need more than anything else, supporters in attendance. Let us all make sure we do everything we can to keep it that way. ■

Junior U’s ———— PUZZLES & QUIZ ———— HEY THERE JUNIOR U’S,

Firstly we’d really looked forward to welcoming you all back to the Abbey this afternoon, but unfortunately we’ll have to wait a little longer! Thanks so much for your fantastic support across the summer - the number of shirts we’ve spotted out on show across the city and beyond has been fantastic to see. We hope you enjoy our new interactive games pages in this programme, and we’ll have plenty more for you to get stuck into as the season goes on. And of course, we’ll welcome back our mascot Marvin the Moose once he’s returned from his summer break to keep you up to date with his moosey musings! See you soon. Cambridge United!

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Welcome back! It’s been a busy close season here at Coconuts with another volume of Celery & Coconuts published in June which saw us sell out 200 copies. We also produced 50th anniversary t-shirts, which are going like hot cakes via our sister CFU’s online shop.

AS WELL AS BEATING THE O’S 1-0 IN 1998 THE STAND OUT RESULT IS A 4-0 THRASHING OF PORT VALE AT THE TURN OF THE MILLENNIUM It’s been interesting delving in to the archives to look at home fixtures played on 12 September over the years. Most recently saw us entertain the O’s in a 1-1 draw in 2015, in fact there have been a lot of draws on this day. Kiddy 1-1 in 2006, Exeter 1-1 in 1995, more interestingly a 3-3 v Scunthorpe in 1987. As well as beating the O’s 1-0 in 1998 the stand out result is a 4-0 thrashing of Port Vale at the turn of the millennium. Wanless, Russell, Youngs and Slade on the scoresheet in front of a crowd of 3,660. The ref was one Uriah Rennie, remember him? I haven’t mentioned our oldest League encounter on this date which was in September 1970. Our Football League initiation was less than a month old and the U’s were still finding their feet. We will talk again at length on another day about the debut v Lincoln which ended all square. We were thrashed at Layer Road then in the League cup and narrowly lost at the Cobblers on the second Saturday of the season. Two consecutive home wins then followed against Oldham and Brentford to kick the season in to gear. A hard fought, goalless point was gained at the Old Showground which set up the home fixture v Southport. In truth this was a dour affair with few chances in front of a crowd of 3,843. 180 minutes of no www.cambridge-united.co.uk

goals would prove to be a telltale sign for the rest of that inaugural season. The day’s programme is attached to view. A bit drab like a lot in that era but enlivened by the bright orange(sic) cover and proclamation of “Into the League”. I went dewy-eyed when I saw a whole page devoted to the Supporters’ Club…….and the Black and Amber Shop. Could we not bring that concept back? One for another day. Finally, let us not forget that it will be 39 years to the day this Saturday that the beloved Smurfs appeared on tv (in the US). There you go. Bye for now.

was a tough start, as Preston North End put them to the sword with a 4-0 victory. Morecambe will hope their advancement in the cup is an indication that it could be a positive season. They’ve established a competitive squad over the summer, potentially enough to avoid a relegation battle this time. Newport County overcame fellow Welsh outfit Swansea City 2-0 last weekend. They’ve proven to be real cup heroes in the past few years, but Michael Flynn’s focus will be on replicating their 2018/19 league success. Harry Kewell is the new man at the helm of Oldham Athletic. It was a tough summer for the Latics, but the primary aim will be to avoid relegation. An emphatic start to the Carabao Cup, however, provides hope. There’s a real sense of unity around Port Vale, they had a good campaign under John Askey and finished strongly. They’ll be heavily fancied to be there or thereabouts. A 2-1 success over Scunthorpe United is evidence of that, who themselves will be hoping for better than 20th this year under Neil Cox. Salford City have made eye-catching additions, bringing in experience and a plethora of attacking options. They’re surely destined to challenge for the title under Graham www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Alexander. They beat Rotherham United last weekend, showing the quality they have within their ranks. Newly-relegated Southend United had an abysmal 2019/20 campaign, there’s a worry that the worst is yet to come. They’ll hope upand-coming manager Mark Molesley is the man for the job, but lost 1-0 to Gillingham in their first competitive match back. Stevenage have earned a reprieve, yet have had little time to prepare for what’s set to be another gruelling battle for the job. Alex Revell has a mammoth task on his hand. Despite this, they’ve brought in some experienced players but bowed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties to Portsmouth. Tranmere Rovers endured a frustrating conclusion to their short time in League One, and despite practically starting afresh this campaign, they’ll be aiming to bounce back at the first time of asking. Last but not least, Walsall are being tipped by many as real dark horses for this campaign. Mostly due to their settled squad and impressive late-season form. Expectations will be higher this time for Darrell Clarke, who saw his side edged out of the Cup by Sheffield Wednesday. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— HABBINITE ANDREW STEPHEN IS BACK WITH HIS REGULAR COLUMN FOR 2020/21. It is wonderful to greet a crowd here for the first time for a League fixture since March, when Lockdown began in earnest. Little were we to know then how serious the threat we faced, was going to be or that it would still represent a real menace to the world by the time we got to Autumn. Last season ended very abruptly for us and the shape of this new one remains very largely unknown. I think it is hugely significant that we have been the first allowed to host a game in front of a crowd. The Football Club deserves great credit for the way it has organised and prepared itself. We have convinced the EFL that we are ready to meet the great challenges posed by this trial. A great deal depends on how well things go but I have no doubt that we will rise to the occasion. As Cambridge United fans we have much to be proud of. The Community Trust have worked tirelessly to make sure that the elderly and vulnerable of Barnwell, and further afield, have not been forgotten. They have distributed hot meals and boxes of food and made visits and phone calls everyday in the fight against social isolation. Players and staff have got involved very willingly. Thanks to Ian Darler and others in raising awareness of mental health issues, the Club have become a leading light in the Heads Up initiative. It really is time that Prince William

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

ceased his flirtation with Aston Villa and became a full time fan here, as befits his title! We have even been seen on Songs of Praise where it was made very clear that real clubs belong to their community and that healthy relationships work both ways. Carlisle are also a community conscious club and we share more than initials with them. I was full of admiration for the way that their players got so involved in the clear up of their neighbourhood after a disastrous flood. And they are wonderfully hospitable up there. It can be the coldest place on Earth. One year I arrived very early with my family and it was freezing. A steward, on seeing us, took us into Foxes, their Hospitality Suite, where we stayed warm....until kick off. We were so grateful. Of course it isn’t always cold there and I remember one very hot afternoon when Jabo and Barry Corr couldn’t stop scoring in an amazing 4-4 draw. Only our most fervent fans make the journey there and I am certain that it is the same for Carlisle fans. There will not be any here today but I would like to welcome all those who have travelled down from Brunton Park as well as those fortunate members of the Amber Army in today’s, historic, Crowd. It’s good to be back! ■

Women’s Team ———— Ben Yeomens ———— CUWFC HEAD COACH BEN YEOMANS PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE LAST SIX MONTH PERIOD FOR THE CLUB AND SETS OUT HIS AMBITIONS FOR THE 2020/21 SEASON. If Carlsberg did pre-seasons, then it wouldn’t look a million miles away from what ours has been. In early March, when we got the news that the season was void, I made a list of every player we currently had in the Club, who I wanted to stay, and who I didn’t think had a future with us. In March we had a zoom meeting with all of the staff and team captains. We spent three and a half hours re-structuring the Club, talking about ambitions, short term and long term goals and planned pre-season meticulously. We made sure that everybody involved was on the same page, and we all knew our roles behind the scenes. For me, it was so important to create an environment that the girls wanted to be a part of. We advertised for trials very early, so by the time the Government announced that we could train in groups of five, we had the ball rolling. We had three trials where over 50 girls attended and the quality was superb. One week later I had 75 girls in a list that I had to narrow down to 40 for our pre-season squads. By the time our pre-season friendlies were around the corner, we had 43 girls signed onto the Club, all with the ability or the potential to play first team football. One of the highlights of this process is the number of U18 girls we have signed for the club which really excites me for the future. Our pre-season games have consisted of five opponents from leagues higher or the same level, and the performances have been outstanding. We have been hard at work educating the girls on a new style of play, and they are all on board and excelling as a group. We have one final test during pre-season where we welcome Portsmouth to our home ground this Sunday, before facing Norwich City in our first game of the season on September 20th. The squad of players have been great, but the www.cambridge-united.co.uk

attitude and mentality of the bunch is even better. All the staff have been top notch from the start of pre-season to now, and there is a real buzz around the camp with the first game of the season just over a week away. I want to say a huge thank you to Cambridge United as a Club for showing real intent in supporting what we are doing with the Women’s side, to our new shirt sponsors GTI and PBS America. They have been extremely helpful in providing us with funds we need to make this Club attractive. We’ve also had support from ‘Manta’ and ‘Coaches Folder’ Providing us with free equipment, and match day sponsorship. With us being a voluntary organisation, sponsorship and fundraising is the heart of the Club so if anybody else is keen to offer sponsorship to us, we have a variety of different sponsor bundles that may be of interest. Please contact kevin.hoover@ cambridge-united.co.uk. We have brought in players to strengthen the squad, staff to strengthen the environment, we’ve streamlined our goals and ambitions for the year and built relationships with local teams and the wider youth girls community. We feel like we are becoming an integral part of the local women’s game and this is something that we hope grows year on year for many years to come. ■

CAMBRIDGE UNITED ———— COMMUNITY TRUST ————

THANK YOU U’S FANS FROM THE COMMUNITY TRUST

Just under six months ago, Cambridge United was preparing to host the annual Community

Matchday Takeover Game vs Cheltenham Town. The matchday takeover every year showcases the work of the Community Trust as we aim to be at the heart of our community, CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V CARLISLE UNITED

using the power of sport to raise aspirations, build communities and improve lives. Of course, on Friday 13th March, the following day’s game was called off. One week later, Cambridge United and the Community Trust launched ‘Here For U’s’, providing practical, emotional and physical support to its’ local community. Our vision of being at the heart of a stronger, healthier, more inclusive Cambridge didn’t change; the way we delivered that vision did. From Monday 24th March, we had members of our community over the age of 70 calling our new Community Careline to ask for help with their everyday needs - from picking up prescriptions or shopping as well as having a friendly chat. Thanks to the incredible work of our club staff, first-team players and board of directors – every single season ticket holder over the age of 64 was rung to ensure they had the support they needed. Over the next few months, the Community Trust partnered with Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance to cook and deliver over 1,700 meals for those families in need and deliver over 300 education activity packs to families attempting home education for the first time. In particular, we would like to say a huge thank you to Chris Neild, Ben Phillips, Andy Fox, Lorraine Cullum, Tom Stewart & Nick Fairbairn who www.cambridge-united.co.uk

put in over 90 hours between them delivering meals & education packs. Beyond that, so many of our programmes couldn’t be delivered face-to-face and hence we took much of our work ‘online’. This meant Zoom calls to our walking footballers and disability sport participants, online assemblies, bootcamps & family fitness sessions and our youth engagement officer holding FIFA tournaments (in which even Harry Darling got involved…). It meant continuing to support participants through the difficult times. However, we could not have provided the level of support we did without the contributions of Cambridge United supporters. Thank you to every single fan who donated to the Here For U’s campaign alongside the numerous fan volunteers. And yet, this was no surprise. Local community is the heartbeat of so many football league clubs and Carol Looker’s never-ending smile when selling her raffle tickets embodies this. Thank you to her family for choosing to support the Community Trust in her ‘final raffle:’ we are touched, honoured and immensely grateful. If you would to support this and our continuing work, please CLICK HERE to find out more and read some memories of Carol. Thank you.
