DANNY GRANGER ———— REST IN PEACE ———— Friends and colleagues of Cambridge United supporter Danny Granger, have penned a tribute in his honour to open up this evening’s match programme. In loving memory of our beloved friend, colleague, son, brother and Fire Fighter Danny Granger, who tragically passed away after battling with COVID-19 recently in Addenbrookes, aged only 52. Where do we start when talking about a larger-than-life character like Danny; the funniest and kindest friend a man could ever wish for. He loved his family and friends more than words can describe. He was Godfather to my daughter Eva 12, who along with my other daughter Anya 10, he spoilt rotten! Danny had many passions in life, one being an ‘on-call’ firefighter at Cottenham Fire Station where he had been for almost 22 years. Danny valued that role and dedicated so much time ensuring that help was always at hand for his local communities. Football was his biggest passion of all, he absolutely loved it! West Ham and Cambridge United were his teams, he loved nothing more than www.cambridge-united.co.uk
standing in the Newmarket Road End with a group of his friends, all the messing about and laughing. We would always say what great memories we had in the Abbey and the ‘Top’ matches we have witnessed over the years and the big-name clubs we have seen there. From the great cup runs to all the Wembley outings, 40 years of being a United fan has many tales to tell! With a beer in his hand and a smile on his face, we would travel the length and breadth of the country following the U’s by train, car, minibus or coach. A true fan, the world has lost a true legend. RIP Danny Boy – Love you always, Wobbler (Jeremy Harben) and all that knew you. Cambridge United have also been saddened to learn of the recent passing of another U’s supporter Gail Pearson. Words of condolence from CFU Vice-Chair Ben Phillips can be found on page 23 of this evening’s programme. The thoughts of everybody at the Club are with the friends and family of Danny and Gail at this sad time.

MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— The last time we met with Cheltenham Town was a really competitive and high-level game on a Tuesday night in Gloucestershire. Late drama in both halves made for an emotional and entertaining game as two good teams fought hard. Cheltenham have an excellent record away from home and are consistent high finishers in the league since Michael Duff has been in charge of the team. Their defensive record is admirable and there’s no doubt they will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Tonight will prove another challenge for us as we look to continue our own good form and try to maintain our solid defensive record whilst being a threatening team in attack. If we can follow the example of Saturday’s win at Mansfield then we won’t go far wrong. That performance was resilient and hard-working, but also on a difficult pitch, we had some really good moments of quality in possession that created us some fine chances. Our clinical edge to take the chances we created was very good and the overall team performance helps us build on our belief. This is the first of three consecutive Tuesday fixtures which is a key period in the season for all teams as it is a full fixture programme throughout the remainder of February and early March. Many teams have packed fixture lists as they catch up on the games in hand they have over us. Our focus has to be our own levels and we will look to enjoy the games we have ahead of us and play with a confidence and freedom to go alongside our work ethic and spirit that has so far served us well. We are hopeful that the weather is beginning to turn and that the brutal challenges in training and on match days that has decimated teams’ training and games programmes is behind us. If that is the case, we will be able to have more quality in training sessions around the games, and hopefully see playing surfaces on match days that allow players to move www.cambridge-united.co.uk

faster and easier as well as bring more control with the football. The players have been magnificent in tricky conditions and have enjoyed the tough element that’s been provided. Their attitude and application has been first class and as these challenges undoubtedly will continue to some extent, I am urging them not to become despondent and that the conditions will improve! Finally it isn’t lost on me that my first official game as Head Coach was supposed to be this one on Saturday 14th March 2020. So much water has passed under the bridge since then, and we have almost reached a year when the season ground to a halt last year. Now, we look forward with optimism towards the remainder of this season, but bigger than that, to a life returning to some kind of normality. It’s been incredibly tough for everybody in a whole host of ways and I am so pleased that we have been able to give you something to enjoy and be proud of again. We will keep going, trying to improve and trying to maintain what we have started. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Our visitors from Cheltenham come to us having won both of their away games this month. When we played them at the JohnnyRocks Stadium at the end of November we came away with a memorable draw, with Paul Mullin scoring in the 95th minute. I was there to see him lead a charge in celebration by running half of the pitch. What a difference that goal made to the journey home! Cheltenham are rightly one of the favourites for promotion. We are in for a tough game. Our last game at home against Southend was possibly the coldest football match I have ever attended, and one of only two in our league to be played that day. It was fitting that Ian Darler was our man of the match. That effort, by Ian and his team, typifies the careful, determined and organised approach we have taken to this season. A key factor in doing this has been the support we have had from our fans, going back to last April. We were one of the first clubs to complete our new team for the season – well ahead of when we knew we would be playing again. Amongst other measures, we adopted strict protocols to protect our players and staff from Covid. The training ground may look like a wedding venue with our gym in a marquee but it does mean that fitness work has been able to carry on. We adjusted our travel plans to limit the numbers on the team coach, and on some journeys use a double decker supplied by Greys of Ely. We have used virus burning air purifiers supplied by Grant Instruments. We are not through the woods yet but as talk from government turns to the easing of the lockdown, we sit at the top of the league. We have played more games than any other team. Playing more games will help us avoid a very condensed end of season and, I believe, gives us a competitive advantage. Luck has no doubt played a part in getting through the games but, to a significant degree, this success comes from our ability to move and organise quickly. This takes me back to the support of our fans. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

WHEREVER WE END UP THIS SEASON ALL FANS CAN BE PROUD OF THE PART THEY HAVE PLAYED IN HELPING OUR CLUB TO ACHIEVE WELL BEYOND WHAT MANY EXPECTED Great thanks goes to the 500 who bought season tickets in April, not knowing when or if football would be played again in 2020 and the 1,000+ who bought season tickets in the summer again not knowing whether they would get to see a live game. This support gave confidence (and cash) to help kick off our campaign. Since then iFollow income has been a huge help. Wherever we end up this season all fans can be proud of the part they have played in helping our club to achieve well beyond what many expected. So back to today – please continue your great support, buy your iFollow pass, and enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— CHELTENHAM TOWN ———— The Cheltenham roar has long been associated with horse racing, but it’s the Town’s Football Club that has given the locals regular reasons to cheer recently. It may be the case that the picturesque pocket of Gloucestershire will always be better known for events at Prestbury Park than the Jonny Rocks Stadium, but the Robins are doing their best to make their mark. There were signs two seasons ago that, in Michael Duff, Cheltenham may have found the man to unlock some potential, and that sentiment was enhanced last term with a play-off charge that was halted by Northampton at the semi-final stage.
It was a far cry from previous years when it was relegation battles rather than promotion chases that set Cheltenham pulses racing. The Robins are at it again this time around, challenging towards the top end of the table and producing a fine FA cup run which saw them push Man City close in round four.
THE FORM
Prior to Saturday’s reverse at home to Bradford, Cheltenham had been hard to beat of late - their main problem had been turning draws into wins. The weekend defeat made it just two losses in eleven in all competitions (and one of those was at the hands of the current Premier League leaders in the FA Cup) CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V CHELTENHAM TOWN
9
but five of their last ten league games have ended all square. The Robins haven’t tasted defeat in any of their previous five away games, recording victories at Harrogate and Walsall in recent weeks. Overall, they are formidable on the road with only Forest Green recording more away victories in League Two. Their record away from the Jonny Rocks Stadium so far this term reads: Played 14, Won 7, Drawn 4, Lost 3.
THE MANAGER – MICHAEL DUFF
Duff has proved a reliable stroke of success
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
since his arrival back in September 2018. It’s his first senior management role following a spell in charge of the under 18’s and under 23’s at Burnley, but his relative inexperience hasn’t proved a barrier to success. The 43 year old steadied the ship and led the Robins away from the relegation zone in his first season in charge, before masterminding a promotion challenge last term. It ultimately ended in disappointment in the play-offs, but his side are well positioned to challenge for the automatic places this time round. Duff is a Cheltenham legend having played for the Club nearly 400 times. He helped them climb from the Southern League all the way up to the third tier of English Football, including a promotion clinching goal in 1999 to secure a path out of the non-league ranks. The Northern Ireland defender also spent a long stint at Burnley, playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League, before hanging up his boots in 2016. Duff’s competitive record since taking the Cheltenham hotseat reads: Played: 129, Won 56, Drawn 36, Lost 37■

Declan Drysdale ———— PLAYER INTERVIEW ———— Declan Drysdale says the U’s switch has been the easiest of fits when it’s come to settling into a new group and finding his stride early in amber and black. The centre-back has slotted in impeccably, especially impressive given the requirement to step forward into midfield during the absence of Paul Digby, following the Coventry loanee’s Abbey arrival. And when it came to the initial attraction of a loan to the U’s, Drsydale said he didn’t need to look far beyond Mark Bonner’s man management as a hugely contributing factor in the decision. He said: “It wasn’t just the fact the Club were top of the League, the way Mark (Bonner) came across was really impressive. “He’s a fantastic manager and I’m sure he’ll have a good future in the game. He’s young and still learning, but he was something that really drew me towards Cambridge United. “The thing was, as soon as I spoke to him on the phone, he had a plan for me. I know I’m only on loan but there was a real plan there for me to contribute. When he explained everything to me, I liked how he came across. “There’s a lot of young managers in the game at the moment doing it their way. He’s a great example. Every day he comes in and he’s positive, and he really knows how to get us going. It’s been a good for me.” And in terms of the group of players around him, Drysdale holds an equally high opinion of the standard of team mate inside the United home dressing room at present. “It couldn’t have been easier (to settle in to the group). It’s a great group and I think any player could come in, settle and feel the same way. The very first thing Bonz said to me on the phone was ‘you’ll settle in great’, and it’s been a fantastic transition. “I live with a few of the lads and it just has that home feel about the Club. “Obviously they were flying in January before I joined, hadn’t lost in the month and I was www.cambridge-united.co.uk
seeing the results, sat top of the table and it was a great opportunity for me. One I couldn’t turn down. “Hopefully come the end of the season, that’s where we will still be.” Despite not having had the chance to strut his stuff in front of an Abbey crowd in an Amber shirt, Drysdale reflects on his evening against the U’s for Gillingham late last year and the impact of the Amber Army on that night. “I was here earlier on in the season for Gillingham, and that was one of the games where fans were allowed in. And I genuinely sat down after that game and thought to myself, that’s a really good fanbase. I remember it being loud for how many were actually in the ground, even though it obviously wasn’t full. “I’d love it if fans were able to be back during the run in, because I think that would make a massive difference at home for us. Looking back at the game last weekend with Southend, I feel that they would have got us over the line in that game for three points. “I know they’re watching in numbers on iFollow that’s brilliant. And we just thank them for that really.” ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Evenin’ all. How are we? A warm welcome to our visitors from “horseyspatown.” Having another good season and pleasing to see an “ole boy” of theirs in charge, Michael Duff and taking his opportunity, and indeed being linked with another club I hear. He’ll have his work cut out tonight though.
IF THEY REMEMBER ONE THING IT WILL BE THE U’S FIRST GOAL WHICH WAS A WONDER FREE KICK STRIKE FROM WAYNE HATSWELL FROM 40 YARDS OUT AFTER JUST 4 MINUTES Bit of a change of scene for this week’s trundle of nostalgia down Cut Throat Lane and the fixture on this date. 23 February 2008 saw us entertain FGR - blimey I must have been about 25 then - and an opportunity in a much improved season guided by Jimmy Quinn to break the hoodoo of not beating our visitors in five previous attempts. We all remember the first attempt, I suspect, back in 2005. The game itself was probably more exciting than the programme although we mustn’t forget things like the ‘South Stand Initiative’ being in play which boosted the gate to an unlikely near 4,800 that day. Not forgetting the 66 hardy stalwarts from Nailsworth way. Anybody who attended this fixture 13 years ago, if they remember one thing it will be the U’s first goal which was a wonder free kick strike from Wayne Hatswell from 40 yards out after just 4 minutes. His first U’s goal and the first of 8 in total over the course of his two season career before heading off to pastures green in Dundalk. Utd went on to win 2-0 to break the spell and the main season ended well two and a half months later in the playoff positions. Heartbreak of course returned in floods at Wembley. www.cambridge-united.co.uk
On this date in 1996 the film ‘Trainspotting’ was released in the UK and Ireland. A good film although not as good as the book, I didn’t think. A pound for every time that was said? Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention the passing last week of another U’s fan, Ian “Animal” Shaw. I didn’t know Ian personally, many Coconutters did, and I know he will be missed by many both inside and outside CUFC. Our thoughts are with all those involved. Enjoy the programme attached, cheer on the U’s to the next step to the fourth division title(!) and of course stay safe. Bye for now. ■

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Cambridge United enjoyed a blistering 0-3 success over Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium. Neither side could draw first blood in a tight first period. Nonetheless, the U’s came out of the blocks firing after the interval and found themselves two goals to the good thanks to a quickfire Paul Mullin brace, who took his League tally to 22 for the season. Harvey Knibbs rounded off the win in added time, drilling a neat attempt under Aidan Stone to ensure that Mark Bonner’s side enter another matchday at the top of the pile. It’s now four without victory for the Stags, who stoop to 18th. Forest Green Rovers go from strength to strength after overcoming Newport County 0-2 on a tricky Rodney Parade surface. A sweet strike from Josh Davison on the stroke of half time sent Mark Cooper’s side ahead, before Jamille Matt came back to haunt his former side from the spot for his 11th of the campaign on the 63rd minute to cement a four-point gap from 3rd position. The Exiles occupy the final play-off position, but have just the solitary win in their last 12 games. Cheltenham Town were on the receiving end of a 0-2 win for a resurgent Bradford City in midweek. Andy Cook, on loan from League Two rivals Mansfield Town, did the damage by netting a goal in each half to lift his side up to 13th. The Bantams were sat dejected in 22nd when they appointed Mark Trueman and Connor Sellars as joint-interim managers in December, but 11 games later they’ve lost just once and are now seven points from the coveted top seven, and the pair have this week been rewarded with the permanent job. A first loss in nine for the Robins, they retain third and need no further reminding of how critical tonight’s fixture at the Abbey Stadium is. Morecambe edged out relegation-threatened Barrow 1-2 at Holker Street. Aaron Wildig headed home the opener from a perfectly-weighted cross on the 24thminute, but the hosts stayed composed to equalise on 65 after Scott Quigley netted his sixth goal in 10 games. Parity lasted
barely a minute however as Derek Adams’ men conjured up the winner through Kelvin Mellor to rise to 4th and within a point of the automatic promotion spots. With the Bluebirds languishing in 23rd after four straight defeats, immediate action was taken in parting company with manager Michael Jolley after just two months at the helm. Salford City remain without defeat at the Peninsula Stadium this season after rescuing a 1-1 draw against Carlisle United. Full-back George Tanner struck the opener for the Cumbrians with a halfvolley on the 11th minute, but they had to deal with a plethora of pressure from the Ammies. Their attacking prowess came up trumps with 10 minutes left to play when James Wilson swivelled and blasted home to ensure a share of the spoils. Richie Wellens’ side now occupy 5th, whereas Chris Beech’s men are 9th and without a win in three, but do boast a generous amount of games in hand. Ten-man Oldham Athletic battled valiantly to secure a 2-2 draw against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. Harry Kewell’s men led after 90 seconds when Davis Keillor-Dunn slotted home, but Calum McDonald levelled going into the break. The start of the second half was contrasting to the first for the Latics when Sido Jombati was dismissed, before Kaiyne Woolery made the advantage count with a tap-in four minutes later. However, the visitors persevered and gained a point thanks to a 25-yard strike from Dylan Bahamboula on 78. Rovers sit in 6th, with Oldham in 17th. Bolton Wanderers rose to 10th and within three points of the play-offs thanks to a scrappy 0-1 win against Southend United at Roots Hall. With the game looking destined for a stalemate, Shaun Miller pounced on a calamitous Mark Oxley mistake to confirm a fourth win in five. The Shrimpers retain 22nd, a point adrift and obtaining a hefty negative goal difference. Darrell Clarke had to settle for a point in his first game in charge of Port Vale as they drew 1-1 against Leyton Orient. The Valiants broke the
CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V CHELTENHAM TOWN
25 deadlock on 47 when David Worrall steered in low, but they were denied maximum points when the O’s levelled 15 minutes later via Dan Kemp. The London outfit remain in the play-off picture, five points behind and 11th, with their opponents a frustrating 19th. Colchester United’s woes continued as a lastgasp James Tilley strike gave Crawley Town a rare 1-0 win at home – ending their nine-game wait. A first win in five also secures a comfortable 12th position. On the contrary, the pressure mounts for Steve Ball. His U’s side are winless in 12 games and slump to 20th. Goalkeeping heroics from Liam Roberts ensured 10-man Walsall clinched a 1-1 draw against Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium. The Saddlers got the perfect start inside the first minute when Caolan Lavery slid home. But the visitors spent the afternoon under siege from Boro’s attack. Liam Kinsella was sent off 10 minutes after the
restart, allowing the freedom on the pitch for the hosts to grab a point through Elliott List. Walsall remain 14th, with Alex Revell’s side in 21st, a comfortable 10 points from danger. Scunthorpe United stretched their winning streak to four games with a 3-1 win over Harrogate Town. Devarn Green put the Iron in the driving seat on the fourth minute, lashing home at the far post. The opener was cancelled out just before the half an hour mark when Josh March dispatched a penalty for the Sulphurites. The visitors remained in the ascendancy as the half progressed, but shaky defending proved costly as Ryan Loft finished clinically in first-half stoppage time. Substitute Lewis Spence then put the game to bed with minutes left on the clock, finding the top corner from 25 yards to send the hosts up to 16th. Harrogate are a place and a point ahead, three points from both 11th and 21st in a congested area. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— TOWNS ARE LIKE PEOPLE. OLD ONES HAVE CHARACTER, THE NEW ONES ARE INTERCHANGEABLE WALLACE STEGLER
On the face of it, we have much in common with Cheltenham and with Cheltenham Town. Both places are better known for their grand architecture and illustrious history than they are for their football teams. Indeed, compared with the attention paid to tourism and to English Literature, the existence of football has been treated by those with power and influence almost as a guilty secret! However Cheltenham is not just a town for Regency style dandies and fops anymore than Cambridge is just a University. Our teams have been playing each other since those far off Southern League days and I have always felt welcome at their ground. Their fans are always friendly and we are always welcome in their Supporters’ Club. Good chips too. It seems strange that their stadium should be called the Jonny Rocks because it never seems to. I have usually been more taken by the beauty of the hills in the distance behind the home supporters’ goalmouth. We always seem to have tough games there and we have often been outfought but I have witnessed some triumphs there. Last time I went, I witnessed a masterclass from Samir Carruthers and thought we would win easily. Sadly, he failed to appear for the second half and we had to settle for a draw. Samir never really recovered after that and became another case of what might have been. Michael Duff has made the Robins hard to beat but we are resilient too. We played with style and passion in the away fixture and I expect the same tonight. We have been missing some key players and have looked a little leggy of late but the www.cambridge-united.co.uk
players have had a rare week off and at least Harrison is back. I look forward to seeing more of the Spurs lads who have shown enormous promise. It must be a relief for them playing for a team which actually tries to win games and to play entertaining football-as it should be played. Spurs are a terrible team to watch at the moment, worse perhaps than anyone except Ipswich. Their thoroughly dislikeable manager choses to blame the referee for his team’s tepid approach. I’m not surprised that Mr Drysdale got so incensed with their players. Their own fans feel the same. Let’s hope for all the points and all the plaudits tonight. ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
