MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————
Welcome back to the Abbey for tonight’s game with Colchester United. It seems a while back now, but the great privilege of leading the team for the first time in my second interim period came against Colchester back in February. It was a competitive game against a team who went on to have an excellent season and take part in the play offs. We will all remember fondly a lively, vociferous crowd that afternoon who celebrated wildly the late winner that came having fallen behind in the second half. Our performance last week against Gillingham was a really strong and www.cambridge-united.co.uk

committed display, full of endeavour and aggression. That has become a regular quality of this team and whilst it hasn’t always delivered, there are very few occasions where those qualities have been missing. The Papa John’s Trophy has been a good competition for us this season, allowing us to test ourselves against strong opposition from League One and bring in £55,000 in prize money which is vital in such a challenging year. The draw will see us travel to Oxford United in the New Year which will be another real test for us, but one we will look forward to taking on in a busy January period with the rearranged game with Southend also added to the month. The Christmas period is approaching and is always a key time in the football calendar, but with the dates this year it is not unfamiliar territory. With games on the 26th, 29th and 2nd, this follows a usual pattern playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. We want to get into the New Year in good health and accumulating as many points as possible in this period, to ensure we remain in touch of the sides above us and build on the strong start we have made. Last weekend was a tough afternoon at Forest Green against a strong side, possibly the best performance against us this season. I take responsibility for the defeat as I asked the players to do something slightly different and it didn’t work. We live and learn. I ask the players to take responsibility for their performances and won’t hide from my own when things don’t work. Tonight, we hope for a performance that reflects more of a regular way of playing for us and whilst it will be a challenging game, I hope the competitiveness of our performance is there, with the added quality needed to get on top of the game. Have a great Christmas, enjoy tonight’s game and we look forward to seeing many of you back at the Abbey on Boxing Day. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to our relatively near neighbours, Colchester. They will be tough opposition, not having lost in nine games. Partly their success has been due to the goals of former U, and L2 Player of the month, Jevani Brown. Congratulations Jevani, the award is well deserved. We look forward to the day when Colchester fans fill the Mead Plant & Grab Stand but, in the meantime it is great that we can, at least, have some fans back into the Abbey. Hopefully, all will have lots to cheer about. Clearly recent results have not gone for us, but do not doubt the determination of the team to get back to winning ways. Determination has also been required in other parts of the club. This season has thrown up many challenges and, in recent weeks, the weather has done its bit to pile on the pressure. Our last league game at the Abbey, against Oldham, was only possible due to the heroic effort of Ian Darler and our ground staff. After a period of constant rain, the pitch was soaked. Then came the snow with two freezing inches settling like a white cap on a marsh! Before dawn on that Saturday the staff cleared it all and then made every possible effort to drain the water away. The result was a pitch that was playable, though not up to the usual groomed finish. The heroics did not end there as we faced Gillingham in the Papa John’s Trophy the following Tuesday. More hard work meant that game was played, and we won. We play Oxford away in the last 16 in January. So, if the pitch looks not quite at its best, spare a thought for the work that has gone into making it what it is as we have experienced more rain over recent days. It all goes to show this is a team game and the off field team is working as hard as the players. Away from The Abbey, St Neots, under the leadership of our own Barry Corr, have progressed into the Second Round Proper of the FA Trophy. They beat Kings Langley 3-1 www.cambridge-united.co.uk

with goals from former U’s Academy player, Lee Watkins and…Barry Corr. Currently they sit third in their league after spending most of last season rooted next to the bottom position. If you ever want to watch a game and can’t get a ticket for the Abbey, then do think about a trip to New Rowley Park. There are discounts for our season ticket holders. Lewis Simper, another product of our Academy, is currently on loan to Concord Rangers who play in the National League South. It was great to see that Lewis was on the scoresheet on Saturday. The joy of all of this is that we are having a football season, here at The Abbey and beyond, which is something to celebrate. Football is out of hibernation, and, as we approach Christmas, so is Panto! (Oh yes it is). In an unashamed plug for Cambridge Arts Theatre, get along to the live Panto and CLICK HERE to see Count Covidula take a beating. Have a happy, safe, and socially distanced when needed, Christmas. Before then, enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Colchester UNITED ———— Colchester are a team on the up. While the early season form (one win in their first six matches) didn’t hint at another tilt at the play-offs, the Essex outfit are starting to find their stride going into the festive period. Saturday’s draw at Port Vale made it one defeat in ten games in all competitions, a run which sees them firmly anchored in the top seven. Steve Ball’s side have proved extremely tough to beat this term – they’ve only tasted defeat on three occasions in the league, with all of those losses coming away from home against high flying opposition - Carlisle, Newport and Exeter.
No team in the division has lost fewer league matches than the U’s this season. Ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, the hope for Colchester supporters was that the play-off defeat at the hands of Exeter last season could prove motivation for another promotion chase – all the signs are pointing towards them being in the mix come May.
THE FORM
A Luke Norris strike ensured a share of the spoils at Vale Park at the weekend and stretched Colchester’s unbeaten run to four matches. They’ve accrued eight points from a possible twelve in recent weeks having also drawn at home to Crawley before beating CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V COLCHESTER UNITED
9 Scunthorpe and Grimsby. A familiar face was pivotal to Colchester’s strong form in November. Jevani Brown, who made the switch from the Abbey to the Essex U’s at the start of last season, notched eight goals in all competitions including hat-tricks against Stevenage in the league and Southend in the Papa John’s Trophy. No surprise, then to see him named Skybet League Two Player of the Month. Up until recently, Colchester’s away form had been their major problem. They’d failed to win on the road in the league all season before putting that right at Scunthorpe earlier this month. The draw at Vale at the weekend may be a further sign that they’re finding some momentum on their travels – played nice, won one, drawn five, lost three is how their away record reads.

THE MANAGER – STEVE BALL
Steve Ball took over the reigns as Head Coach in the summer, stepping up from his previous role of assistant. Ball had spent four years working in that position and moved into the hot seat following the departure of John McGreal. The 51 year old, who has also had managerial experience at Leiston and Maldon and Tiptree, featured for Colchester 75 times over two spells as a player. He also played for Norwich and had a very brief spell at the Abbey in 1992. So far he has won eight, drawn eight and lost six of his 22 competitive games in charge. ■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— Tonight, we have reached the last home match before Christmas. I hope that everyone has a good one. It will, however, be a difficult and different period for many without having loved ones or families to share it with this year. It is really important that we all keep in touch with others during this period and ensure they are not on their own. Remember, you are never alone and there are organisations that you can speak to you throughout the coming weeks. Some of these can be found by CLICKING HERE Another group of organisations really busy now and doing essential work throughout the year at both national and local levels are the foodbanks. Football supporters across the country are renowned for helping foodbanks. The CUFC Lottery have made a donation this week to help contribute towards the provision of family hampers locally. We hope they will help some families enjoy Christmas a little more. If you would like to sponsor a hamper CLICK HERE or else you can find out more about your local foodbanks’ locations and contact details CLICK HERE The Football Supporters Association second annual report was published last week and you can see a copy by CLICKING HERE - it will inform you about the work being undertaken by the organisation. The FSA are supporters representing supporters so they are able to understand the concerns and issues that other supporters have. The 48-page document includes information concerning their progress on football governance and the launch of their Sustain the Game! campaign. There are also sections looking at ongoing caseworks and the Fans for Diversity campaign. Individuals can sign up to join them as well as supporter groups www.cambridge-united.co.uk
and other organisations like fanzines. It really is open to everyone. The group speaks on a regular basis to the Premier League, EFL and has members on the FA committee. Although the results haven’t gone our way it has been wonderful to see supporters again filling the terraces and seats at the Abbey Stadium. Football is very much a social event and the re-organising of your match day routines and rituals to accommodate these rules is difficult but essential. Thank you for making those changes and the matches a success so far off the pitch. One further change that you could help with concerns the removal of rubbish on matchdays. Ian and Mick have installed additional bins around the ground and would welcome your assistance with putting as much rubbish in them as possible before leaving the ground. The more time spent in the stands and terraces clearing them will mean a reduction in the time spent on the pitch itself. It is remarkable how much rain has fallen during recent weeks and keeping the pitch fit to be played on is both a priority and an achievement in itself. The EFL has teamed up with Mind to produce some special badges. The On Your Side badge proceeds will be going toward Mind’s life-changing services. The Cambridge United badge can be purchased by CLICKING HERE and CLICK HERE for the Colchester badge, they cost £3.50 to buy. Please take care and stay safe over the upcoming period. We will see you again on Boxing Day against Leyton Orient. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Evening, folks and a warm Tuesday night in December welcome to our friends from Britain’s oldest registered town. Col U seem to feature a lot in this column lately. I am reminded of Layer Road and what a hovel that was but at least hovels are lived in, eh… In terms of the programme of the day we’re going back to 15 December 1979 and our second season in the heady heights of the second division. The Cottagers from SW10 came to town that day, we had already beaten QPR in our previous home game at the Abbey so confidence was high. Wasn’t it just? A 4-0 thrashing with an Alan Biley hat-trick. The crowd was phenomenally low at 4,778 for London opposition, in fact from the programme attached you’ll see we were already bottom of the crowd table. When you consider that the following May we finished the season 8th (out of 22) then it is difficult not to feel the directors’ frustrations. It got worse of course.
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
Couple of nuggets in the Fulham programme, take a look at their line-up and you’ll recognise three names absolutely synonymous with CUFC glory days. And the Vice-Presidents’ roll call is interesting too. A certain C Proctor in there as well as Gerald Lowe the coal merchant and Forgecliffe Ltd, owned by a certain chairman of the board of ours, at various times. And Keith Loring, commercial manager, who I didn’t realise flogged Mercs as well (happy to be corrected) and who went on to be chief exec at Derby, amongst other places. Enjoy the game, a repeat of the end of the last time we met here would be quite nice, wouldn’t it! And in case you were wondering, on this date in 1966 Walt Disney, subject of these pages formerly, passed away. Bye for now.

31 STARS ———— 31 MARATHONS IN 31 DAYS ———— Cambridge United were pleased to welcome Ben Blowes to the Abbey earlier last week as part of his multi-marathon fundraising effort for Tom’s Trust. Ben is in the middle of taking on 31 marathons in 31 days to raise money for the children’s cancer charity, and if that wasn’t a challenge enough, he’s vowed to do every run in under four hours. Last Tuesday, day eight of his challenge so far, Ben used the Abbey Stadium as a venue to

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO 33 goals were plundered in 12 matches during the weekend, further showcasing just why it really is the most wonderful time of the year. Well, for some at least. As the league table slowly starts to become less congested, it really is the perfect opportunity to gain momentum in quick succession during a busy period. As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of Sky Bet League Two. Leyton Orient continued their fine start to the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over leaders of the pack Newport County at Brisbane Road. The Exiles started on the front foot, deservedly leading through Jamie Proctor at the break. However, quickfire strikes from Danny Johnson, his 14th in all competitions, and James Brophy wrapped up the three points to move the O’s into 7th after four wins from five. A first loss in six for Mike Flynn’s side means their advantage at the top is narrowed to three points. Salford City maintained their unbeaten record at the Peninsula Stadium as they played out a stalemate against fellow promotion-chasing Cheltenham Town. It was an excruciating afternoon for the hosts, who had to withstand severe pressure from the Robins in order to gain a point and move to 8th. Michael Duff’s side, six unbeaten, are now situated in 2nd. Chris Beech’s rampant Carlisle United plummeted Stevenage to a dreary 4-0 defeat at Brunton Park on Saturday, moving into the automatic promotion spots in the process. Nick Anderton, Josh Kayode, Lewis Alessandra and Joe Riley were all on target in an afternoon to savour for the Cumbrians, who are the only side in the division to have recorded maximum points from their last three games. A first loss in four for Alex Revell’s side sees them slip into the relegation zone, but level on 13 points with two other sides. Forest Green Rovers stretched their unbeaten
run to five games after securing a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Cambridge United at the New Lawn. Second-half strikes from Aaron Collins and Jamille Matt proved the difference as the Nailsworth outfit occupy 4th. It’s contrasting for the U’s, who are now five without a win after falling out of the play-off positions for the first time this season. A dominant Exeter City rose to 5th after cruising to a 5-0 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers at St James Park. Ryan Bowman secured back-to-back hattricks at home, with Matt Jay and Jake Taylor rubbing salt into the wounds with a five-star performance as the Grecians made it 18 goals in their last four league games. Keith Hill’s side are lodged in 12th after consecutive defeats, but are just three points from the top 7. Colchester United returned home from Port Vale with a 1-1 draw after a battling afternoon at Vale Park. The hosts, who had enjoyed a dominant performance, got the breakthrough before the hour mark from a low Devante Rodney drive. Luke Norris made the most of an opportunity seven minutes later as his fine strike salvaged a tie and ensured they travel to the Abbey tonight in 6th. The Valiants are still finding their feet in a lowly 14th. In a narrow affair, a close-range Aaron Wildig header was enough to separate Morecambe and Harrogate Town at the Globe Arena. An applaudable 10th is the Shrimps’ reward for a fourth straight home win in all competitions. Where the Sulphurites are concerned, one win in nine means they slip to 17th. Walsall earned back-to-back wins with a 2-1 comeback victory over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Eoin Doyle’s sixth goal in as many games put the Trotters ahead, but Elijah Adebayo levelled on the stroke of half-time before a ferocious Rory Holden free-kick sealed the victory on the stroke of the hour mark to send the Saddlers into 11th and banish Bolton to 16th. CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V COLCHESTER UNITED
25 Crawley Town have certainly unearthed a gem in Max Watters, who bagged a hat-trick as the Red Devils clinched their first league win in seven games with a 4-2 victory over Barrow. Finishes from Josh Kay and Sam Hird had for a time put the Bluebirds ahead, but a red card for Connor Brown and a Tom Nicholls penalty changed the game’s complexity. Watters secured the match ball at the death to make it 12 goals from 12 league games for the side in 13th. David Dunn’s side are now winless in seven and on the cusp of entering the relegation zone. Oldham Athletic consigned Bradford City to a fifth successive defeat with a 3-1 win at Boundary Park. Dylan Bahamboula, Carl Piergianni and substitute Davis Keillor-Dunn all converted to ensure a late strike from Paudie O’Connor was just a consolation for the Bantams, who made the decision to part
company with manager Stuart McCall after languishing in 22nd. Four wins in five for Harry Kewell’s side, they’re up to 15th. There’s every reason to believe at Roots Hall right now, as Southend United secured a morale-boosting 1-0 success over 18th placed Scunthorpe United at the weekend. A late strike from on-loan Arsenal midfielder James Olayinka made it two games unbeaten as the Shrimpers find themselves four points from safety with a game in hand. Strugglers Grimsby Town and Mansfield Town settled for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Blundell Park. Substitute Ira Jackson latched home on his Mariners debut on 63 minutes, before a Nicky Maynard penalty minutes later brought the sides level. The point apiece ensures the sides are 19th and 20th respectively, both on 16 points. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— IN ALL THE FRUSTRATION AND CONFUSION OF LIFE, JUST TAKE A MOMENT AND SMILE; EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT FOR THE BEST ANON
Habbin North is famous for the boundless optimism of some of its regular occupants, albeit not many. True to form, during the home defeats to Mansfield and Oldham, their Yodalike presences were declaring bleakly that, “I knew this would happen when they let crowds back in!” or, “ I knew that we were no good all along...we’ve used up a season’s worth of good luck already”. Sigh. Of course it would have been the icing on the cake to be able to see the team play as well as it has on iFollow but life rarely co-operates in that way. However disappointing those results were, it was great to be back, doing normal things and sharing experiences with familiar people. Of course we didn’t play well but neither did we get the rub of the green. Mansfield Town got the full benefit of hapless refereeing, holding and hacking throughout. It should have been stopped long before the disgraceful foul on Boateng, the game’s most influential player. Now we have been deprived of his services for weeks and the player who should have been sent off was encouraged to continue in his primitive style. The battering Ironside received from both centre halves left him unable to play in the next match and, more than anything, I felt that Mansfield had got away with it. Someone standing behind me said that Brian Clough would have been ashamed of the way his son’s team played. He was absolutely right and I’ll leave it there. www.cambridge-united.co.uk
By contrast, Oldham played good football and had just won five away games on the bounce. We missed a penalty and they scored two good goals in a five minute period. It was their day. The most disappointing thing perhaps was the way our quick passing game disappeared in the last twenty minutes of each game. We have been at our best switching play with the ball on the ground. We must learn to be consistent. The real style reappeared during the game against Gillingham where we showed what we are really capable of. If we can play like that we will go up and deserve it too. Finally, how good it was to see both Ian Darler and the Community Trust winning more awards. Ian Darler has done more for the cause of mental health than anyone I know. The Community Trust have worked tirelessly to support Barnwell during these horrible times, truly demonstrating what football clubs can do to support the community in which they are embedded. Well done to them and to our stewards who have made a challenging job look very easy. Their care for fans is obvious. And hats off to Mark Bonner who attended the unveiling of a bench bought to celebrate the memory of Keith Hood, a lifelong supporter who I was very proud to know. True supporters are the lifeblood of any club and we must never forget it or people like Keith Hood. Up the U’s! ■

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
