MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————

We rarely look at individual months as a marker for success and tend to look at games in blocks, whilst also only ever focussing on the next game. However, a positive result this afternoon against a good Crawley Town side, who have themselves achieved beyond what many would have predicted back in September, would round off what has already been a good points return through January. The job John is doing at Crawley is exceptional and they have been in great form in both league and cup. We know we are in for a really tough game. The current run is particularly pleasing given the challenging circumstances the players have had to perform under. It’s that time of year when playing surfaces are at the mercy of the weather - both on matchday and in the week at the training ground - and the challenge of a long season is intensified. But that’s what it’s all about, we get on with it and I continue to be pleased with the way this team tackles what they must in order to maintain focus towards performing at the best of their ability. They’re honest, hardworking and hungry and that’s what is required moving forward for whatever we face, however expected or unexpected that may be. The uncertainty of the current point in the season was highlighted in midweek, with the late postponement up at Salford. We were www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

keen to play and ready to go ahead, with a determination to build on the momentum built up in the opening weeks of 2021. It wasn’t to be and we move on to today with the same mindset, and will go back to Moor Lane in a week’s time ready to put in a performance. Thorough work continues to take place in recruiting the additions we feel will best support the current squad for the run in towards the end of the season. Recruiting players is easy, but recruiting the right ones that can bring both the ability and character to complement this squad takes time. That was the case with Shilow Tracey, who we have been pleased to bring in on loan from Tottenham. He’s a player we have watched for a while. He knows Jubril well from his parent club of course and Joe Ironside too from a previous spell with Macclesfield, so he’ll settle in quickly. He adds electric pace to the team and carries the ball excellently, which gives the team another attacking threat that it needed. He can play in various attacking positions, and I’m sure he’ll have a big impact on the team in the coming weeks. So have faith that much like in the summer, we’ll get the additional recruitment required before the window shuts right, and that we will add where we feel it can make the right impact for the team. And please continue to get behind this team as you have done thus far. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to Crawley Town after their excellent win against Premier League Leeds and then narrow loss to Bournemouth in the FA Cup. It is now back to League 2 duty for our second meeting of this season. Our trip to Salford on Tuesday ended with a late pitch inspection and the game being postponed. We were aware of this possibility on the way up north but our intention is to play games whenever we can this season, so we took the chance that temperatures, that were predicted to increase, would thaw the frozen corner of the pitch. It was not to be, though the nine-hour round trip was not entirely wasted as it gave time for our new players from Spurs, Jubril Okedina and Shilow Tracey to get to know the rest of the team. Accepting the risk of a late call off was a decision taken by both clubs and fair play to Salford as they offered to cover all of our travel costs. An offer which we have accepted. So, as we approach February, we remain top of the league without kicking a ball on Tuesday. This is my first programme note since Andrew Stephen and Ben Phillips have taken over as Chair and Vice Chair of CFU. I have met with both of them and I am impressed by their vision and energy. I look forward to continuing to build a strong and constructive relationship with CFU, as well as CUSP who I also met with this week. The saying by Sir Matt Busby: “Football is nothing without fans” is as true today as it has ever been. In the last year this club has benefitted hugely from the loyal support of our fans and, as we look forward to the end of this pandemic, I hope we can continue to work together as one club with a common purpose. You don’t have to look far in the football world to see clubs where this unity and common purpose does not exist and it does not produce good outcomes. I welcome fans groups as “critical friends”. They can, and should, ask questions of the club management. We may not always be able to give the answers that are wanted but www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Sometimes there are things that we can’t say due, for example, for reasons of confidentiality but where we can speak openly we will. We should truly be united in endeavour. We are now in the second half of the season. We have everything to play for. Enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— CRAWLEY TOWN ———— Giant killers. That’s what Crawley are to many casual observers at the moment after their FA Cup demolition of Leeds recently. And why not? They took a Premier League team apart and deservedly progressed to the next round. But close watchers of League Two won’t have been as surprised as those less well versed in the nitty gritty of lower division football. The Sussex side have quietly made an impact in the fourth tier this season with their brand of expansive football and ability - on a good day - to steamroller teams into submission. In a tightly packed division and with games in hand, Crawley have put themselves in

sight of the play-off places. It may have taken the Cup spotlight or the footballing journey of a well-known reality TV star to put the Reds on the map for many – but the rest of league two were already standing up and taking notice.

THE FORM

Like last weekend’s opponents, Crawley have had Covid induced interruptions to cope with – Tuesday’s defeat in the FA Cup at Bournemouth was their first game since 10th January. The recent form has been strong. Crawley have lost just once in their last eleven matches in all competitions with six of those games ending in victory. CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V CRAWLEY TOWN

9 THE MANAGER – JOHN YEMS

Up until December, travel sickness had been a problem – The Reds had only won once away from home in the league. But an upturn in the last month has kept them competitive at the right end of the table. The recent run includes some impressive away victories at Leyton Orient, Forest Green and Bolton. They also held high flying Newport to a 1-1 draw at the People’s Pension Stadium. Overall away from home in League Two, the record reads: Played 12, won four, drawn four, lost four.

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

A colourful character, forthright with his opinions, John Yems has vast footballing experience. The 61 year old, who was previously assistant manager to Paul Tisdale at Exeter and Head of Football Operations under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth, has also worked at Fulham, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Torquay and Gillingham. Yems took over the reins at the People’s Pension Stadium in December 2019 following the departure of Gabriele Cioffi – it’s his second spell at Crawley having led an escape from conference relegation back in the 2006/7 campaign. Yems has a 40% win ratio since returning to the club, with his record reading: Played 48, won 19, Drawn 16, Lost 13. ■

LIAM O’NEIL ———— MIDFIELDER FRESH, FIT AND UP FOR THE FIGHT ———— Liam O’Neil is burning to play whatever role he can during the second half of the season, to help see through a memorable year and push his hometown Club towards promotion. After shooting out of the blocks for the U’s in September, starting the season alongside Paul Digby in central midfield for the two opening wins against Birmingham City and Carlisle United, the 27-year old’s campaign was quickly hamstrung by a grade three tear in his hamstring. However, whilst injury induced spells on the sideline have not been uncommon to O’Neil in recent seasons, this time round he says the form of the team and the encouraging senior role Mark Bonner’s has equipped him has kept the midfielder close to his teammates with a feeling of being able to still offer value. “It’s a huge relief to be back. Frustrating to be out on the back of a good pre-season, I was feeling good and as we’ve seen the team was clearly in a good place. “So of course it has been frustrating not to be a part of that on the pitch, but I have been able to have an impact off it. I’ve tried to help as much as I can around the team, being one of the more experienced players. “I said to Bonz as soon as I got the injury and knew I’d be out for a couple of months, that I wanted to help as much as I possibly could in that time. To be able to help with the younger boys in the squad, and also to offer an opinion on what I could see from a distance. I hope that’s been useful, and it’s been nice to play a part. I’d have obviously liked to have played a more important part, but for me that just wasn’t the case. I look forward to being more influential toward the end of the season now. “Fair play to all the boys they’ve been doing brilliantly.” www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Now raring to go, such is O’Neil’s eagerness to play a more of a hands on role in the coming months, he’s been quick to semi-jokingly offer Head Coach Mark Bonner his services at centre back given the current situation. “Being back just gives the team another option in terms of personnel which can only be good. But also I said to Bonz, worst case scenario, if needed to play centre half, I’ll play centre half! “Whether I’d be any good, I don’t know but I’ve played a few games there earlier in my career. So if needs be, then great, let’s have a go. “On a serious note, that is the genuine attitude of the squad. Whatever is thrown at us, we find ways to deal with it. For us, we’ve got points on the board, the League table looks good, and if we continue to handle our side of things then we give ourselves a great chance.” And in terms of what ‘a great chance’ looks like, O’Neil says he can’t help but harbour the ambitions to achieve a promotion on his C.V with his hometown Club, and is keen to be involved in any way possible to help the U’s see it through. “Being a more experienced head, you do reflect on stages of your career. It would be great for me to get my hometown team promoted. That was my target when I first joined Cambridge united again, and it’s the same now. “I know I haven’t played as much of a part to date, but I’d like to think I’ve played my part off the pitch and can help for the remainder of the season. I’ve told Bonz when you need me, you need me but Diggers and Adam are doing well in there, and I’ll be ready to do my bit when called on.” ■

DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— Fans Elected Director ———— This week we should start by remembering all the people who have passed away during the period since last March. During the past week it was reported that over 100,000 people had died of Covid and in addition to that figure there are many who died from other causes. We would like to send all the families left behind our sincere condolences and thoughts. We also need to check through these times we confirm that everyone is ok and that we are still looking out for each other. In this time when many people are isolating and missing daily contact with others a telephone call would be a great way to stay in touch. CFU have come up with the idea of a telephone conversation with someone where individuals could chat all things Cambridge United players, managers, matches, stadiums, Wembley. Or about anything. If you would like someone to call you please see CLICK HERE Over many years we have been extremely fortunate at Cambridge United to have some really talented writers among the fanbase producing some of the best fanzines available. The first fanzine I remember is the Abbey Rabbit, back in the early nineties. Do you remember any of the following? The Globe, One Wonky Antler and Planet Amber. What others have there been? The latest one is Under the Abbey Stand and they are following on with this tradition. However, with the advancement of social media and technology they have now moved onto the next level producing a regular podcast in addition to updating their website with printed copy. You can see more and find out more via their website CLICK HERE. The team that is behind producing everything is Julian Roberts, Jack Swindlehurst, Tom Walker, Jordan Worland and Owen Kiernan. This week in Parliament a Ten Minute Rule Bill was brought by former sports minister, www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Helen Grant, who said that the country’s football governance requires radical reform to protect the game’s future. Helen is working with the Our Beautiful Game project and her Bill is looking for legislation to create an independent regulator that would govern all of English football from grassroots to the top tier. Its remit would include: i. Distribute funds in the interest of the wider game of football ii. Introduce a comprehensive licensing system for professional clubs iii. “Review thoroughly” the causes of financial stress in the game iv. Bring forward reforms to “modernise and strengthen” the FA v. Work with supporter groups to advance causes that really matter to them vi. Drive the promotion of diversity and inclusion in football. To read more about the bill CLICK HERE Meanwhile the FSA is also keeping its pressure on the Government to deliver their manifesto commitment to a “fan-led review” of the game’s governance. MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Happy Saturday, fellow U’s and a warm late January welcome to the Red Devils from England’s second airport town (I think). Following a tough little bout with some Bantams last weekend and then a washout in the Coronation Street wastelands it’s back again to cementing our place at the top of L2. In popping back down Cut Throat Lane it is inevitable in our anniversary year that we should revisit the 1970/71 season again and spying my fixture list I see that on 30 January 1971 we entertained the Bluebirds from Barrow, as indeed we have already done this season. This was our fifteenth home league outing of that inaugural season, bearing in mind two points for a win in them there days, the previous fourteen home fixtures had seen us garner seventeen points in all which probably tells you in itself our first season in the Football League was not going to end in promotion. The result that day was perhaps typical of the season as a whole, an entertaining 3-3 draw hosting opposition who were destined to finish bottom of division four that season having only been relegated from division three the previous season. They finished 22nd (out of 24) the following season and regrettably for them were voted out of the Football League by their brothers and sisters, replaced by Hereford Utd. To return just 48 years later. I’m sure it was worth the wait! Back to the game 49 years ago in front of a poor crowd of 3,803 and Bill Cassidy, Jim White and an own goal from Barrow striker Eddie Garbett. I assume he must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time at a corner. Anybody remember? We had in fact been unbeaten since Boxing Day when we got turned over at eventual champions Notts County in front of nearly 16,000. Today’s sepia-tinted programme follows the INTO THE LEAGUE format visited here before with all the usual features and by now the Black & Amber Shop seems to be open for business. And a rare away win on our previous www.cambridge-united.co.uk

outing at Stockport to celebrate. To think just a little more than six years later we would clinch promotion (again) at Edgeley Park on a Friday night under the magical tutelage of a certain R.F. Atkinson. Finally, for all you cricket fans out there, it was on this day in 1883 at the SCG that the Aussies were presented by the touring England team with the ashes of a bail following another thrashing. The rest as they say is history. Enjoy the game and stay safe. Bye for now. ■

COMMUNITY TRUST ——— United For Cambridge Pledge ——— Over the past 6 months, Cambridge United through its Here For U’s programme and the work of the Community Trust, showed the power of sport and football in its ability to pull people of all backgrounds together and support the most vulnerable in our society during times of such adversity. The Cambridge United squad have already paid tribute to the work of the Trust with a significant donation; however today, they have pledged their ongoing support to the programmes which are making a tangible difference in our city. We pledge to be ‘United For Cambridge’ and support Cambridge United Community Trust as it uses the power of sport and the brand of Cambridge United FC to empower our community and change lives. The local community has always been there for its’ football club and today, the first-team squad’s pledge reflects the club-wide desire to be at the heart of its’ community and to be United For Cambridge. From the 1,700+ meals cooked and delivered to those families in need; to the 1,200+ calls to senior citizens combatting social isolation: our aim was to be United For Cambridge and to be at the heart of a community response to coronavirus. We wanted our fans and our community to be proud to support a Club that is more than just Saturday afternoon but whose values lie at being at the beating heart of its own community. Our first-team players have always had a heavy involvement in the Community Trust’s programmes and last season, before Covid-19, we liaised over 130 different visits/engagements. During Covid-19, the players stepped up further, not only making significant donation to the work of the Trust but volunteering to deliver meals, call senior citizens, take part in Zoom calls with disability sport participants and so much more! When Covid-19 restrictions allow, we look forward to continuing the player visits which have such an incredible impact on participants. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

The role of a Trust ambassador is to promote one of the Trust’s themes of work as defined below. They agree to promote the specific area of the Trust’s work over the coming year, as well as making a few personal visits to the respective programmes, when Covid-19 restrictions allow. Communities Ambassador – JOE NEAL We run turn up and play football sessions across areas of high-need in Cambridge helping young people to achieve their potential and improve their wellbeing. We also aim to help tackle the issue of food poverty through working with the Cambridge Food Poverty Alliance and running “fit and fed” holiday sessions. We combat social isolation in seniors through a host of seniors events (lunches, teas, dementia sport cafes) and through lockdown reached out to tackle loneliness by connecting them online and reducing boredom through activity packs. Physical Wellbeing Ambassador – PAUL DIGBY We take part in campaigns encouraging people to have a healthier lifestyle and run various physical activity programmes (such as our obesity management football programme) ourselves doing precisely that. Mental Health Ambassador – CALLUM BURTON We run a mental health education programme in secondary schools aiming to increase awareness of mental health; and run various other mental illness prevention programmes. We aim to be a mentally healthy football club on fostering positive wellbeing in our community as well as our club. Education Ambassador – PAUL DIGBY Our Maths, Science and English intervention programmes in schools use football to engage children that might not be engaging well in school otherwise. Our wider work within schools uses sport as the tool to teach life skills. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE BBC LOOK EAST FEATURE ‘CALL FOR THE BALL’ INITIATIVE

CFU CORNER ———— BEN PHILLIPS ———— 2020 has been a uniquely tough year and the start of 2021 hasn’t looked much better, with public health protocols meaning that many football fans now feel more isolated than ever. On a normal match day attending a fixture has acted as a release & a means of escape from all the other matters that come with everyday life. Many of us look forward to a weekly 90 minutes cheering on the U’s and a chance to share a common experience with fellow supporters that has largely been on hold for the past nine months. Although we may not be standing on the terraces cheering on Bonner’s boys in person at present, CFU wants fellow fans to know you are not alone. We are still united and together. Football clubs represent so much more than 90 minutes on the football pitch. Since the start of the pandemic, the work that Cambridge United Community Trust has done, from delivering 1717 meals to families in need, to delivering activity packs & making calls to check in with over 1200 senior citizens, on a consistent basis to the wider community is something that all fans should be proud of. Cambridge United Supporters Trust board members have enjoyed working alongside the Community Trust during the pandemic, helping by offering support and volunteers, when needed, for deliveries at times. Understanding the critical need to communicate with people, we have started to phone our existing members and are regularly checking in with them. We want all fans of the football club, regardless of their situation or background, to know that as a Supporters’ Trust we are here for the fans going forward and are willing to help alongside the Cambridge United Community Trust in making sure fans don’t feel lonely or isolated during the pandemic. We want to check that everybody is ok and show that we are still looking out for each other. In other news, one of our chief roles in the future has to be making sure that the needs of all supporters are met by the club in order to encourage greater diversity and inclusion. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

All supporters should feel welcome and safe at the Abbey Stadium and the elderly, the unemployed, those with special needs and the vulnerable may need provision which goes beyond that which football clubs usually provide. Identifying these needs and making proposals for new provision are obvious ways in which CFU can help the club and our fans. In addition, CFU itself needs to become more diverse and inclusive. We have far too few young people amongst our members. Our membership does not accurately reflect the full spectrum of ages, views and cultures which make up our society. We need to consider different types and prices for memberships to suit whatever involvement people seek. We are pleased to announce that we will have a new & exciting membership initiative for fans to join the new look Cambridge United Supporters trust shortly. Details will appear on our website and in the press this week. We have listened to what supporters have told us and plan to bring in an affiliate membership scheme soon so that we can truly speak on behalf of Cambridge fans and reflect all shades of opinion. We have much to be proud of; a great young manager and a team which does us proud. That is why we come year after year, but a club is more than that. The club has made a significant contribution to its community, raised awareness of mental health, and provided opportunities for many disabled and disadvantaged groups to play football. And we are financially stable, despite the difficulties created by covid. It is time to join in and time to be proud. Come on you U’s! ■

However, raced into a two-goal advantage eight they couldn’t capitalise as Cole Stockton minutes into the second half thanks to increased the advantage on 66 before close-range strikes from Kaiyne Woolery and weathering the storm and holding out for Vaughan. The visitors were then dismissed to victory. Remarkably, it finally puts them on 0 ten men for the third time in four games on goal difference after some contrasting early70 when Connor Hall was shown a second season results. Nonetheless, Derek Adams’ yellow card. Despite the disadvantage, side continue to exceed expectations, and they continued to persevere and grabbed sitting just the solitary point behind league an immediate consolation through Josh leaders Cambridge United, they have every March’s glancing header. Simon Weaver’s right to believe. Where the Grecians are side piled on the pressure at the death, but concerned, just one win in six is alarming, the magnitude of the task was too strong as they’re now 9th and two points from the they slipped to 20th. play-off picture. Stevenage gained a key point towards Cheltenham Town returned to winning ways League Two survival after a hard-fought 0-0 with a 2-0 success over strong travellers draw with Colchester United at the Lamex Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night. 25 closest for the U’s, inexplicably heading wide a golden opportunity in the 15th minute. Courtney Senior and Noah Chilvers came close at the death as Boro forced a share of the spoils. It’s now an increasingly worrying eight matches winless for Steve Ball’s men now, they’re in 14th. Alex Revell has a reason to be optimistic, his side are one point afloat with two invaluable games in hand. Scunthorpe United are in the midst of revitalisation after first-half damage wrapped up a 2-0 home win against Port Vale. Ryan Loft helped himself to both goals for the Iron in the space of seven minutes, where the hosts then shut up shop impeccably to record consecutive wins and climb to 17th. It puts them level on points

with the stuttering Valiants, boasting a game in hand which helps to ease relegation fears. Bradford City extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a comprehensive 1-3 triumph over Southend United. Gareth Evans opened the scoring at Roots Hall after 23 minutes, before defender Elvis Bwomono fired a low shot home on the half an hour mark. The in-form Bantams stepped it up a gear during the second period, with Danny Rowe stroking home his first goal for the club before Evans completed his brace and moved the visitors into 18th. It’s rock bottom as it stands for the Shrimpers, but they know a win will soon change the complexity of an ever-changing division. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— I COULD NOT BREAK RECORDS; SO I DECIDED TO SHATTER THEM DHLIWAYO

Whenever I think of Creepy Crawley, I think of natural charmers Steve Evans and our own Paul Raynor, the agitation twins. Using tricks and tactics honed to perfection at Boston United, Evans made Crawley hard to beat and horrible to watch. In terms of gamesmanship they made Leeds United of the early seventies look like hapless amateurs. Diving, shrieking, off the ball provocation and intimidation of match officials were all part of their repertoire of soccer skills. Of all the teams we saw in the Conference, they were the ones least worth watching. Of course, much has changed since then and more recent managers have turned them into a decent and highly watchable footballing side. Harry Kewell introduced a cultured brand of football but wasn’t particularly successful with it. John Yems has added competitive steel to their attractive style and their FA Cup win over a less savvy incarnation of Leeds was well deserved. It was achieved so easily that they even had the opportunity to give Reality TV star, Mark Wright, his professional football debut. Will we see him at the Abbey? I wonder. They will have to take us more seriously than Leeds. Going back to Steve Evans for a moment, if I must, he was obviously so impressed with Rob Cundy when we thrashed Gillingham that he decided to hijack his loan to us from Bristol City. They say class is permanent. Having sold the Franz Beckenbaur of League 2, it seems reasonable to expect the arrival of an experienced centre half this week and maybe one other player. Promotion is on the cards and we need to be as strong as we can be without gambling with money we haven’t got. It’s a real pleasure to see a couple of Spurs youngsters www.cambridge-united.co.uk

here. They will do well here. Maybe Jack Roles would have done better coming back? Social media remains a study in drama. So often this season we see demands that Bonner be sacked, claims that the wheels have come off and that our performances are dire. Then we score a couple and all the nonsense is forgotten. A point against an excellent Bradford team was well won. Where are we in the league? Finally, our current goal machine is within a whisker of breaking David Crown’s record for the most goals scored for United in a season. He will probably smash it. We have waited a long time but this is the season that keeps on giving. COYU’s! ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
