MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————
Last weekend’s win at Oldham completed a hectic period for us, returning a strong four victories from seven games. This is a really good return from not only a busy period, but a spell where we have had to rotate the squad so often to improve fitness levels of returning players from injuries, and with a number of players unavailable at different times in the month. The game was a rollercoaster for anyone watching and despite the start, we managed to turn the game around in impressive fashion playing with purpose, pace and personality. We have shown in 2021 a resolve to overcome setbacks in games and this is always a good trait of any team. It’s easy to think the top teams play well, dominate and simply have their own way all the time. But that isn’t the reality. Therefore the ability to respond and recover is a vital skillset. We have been able to refresh and recharge a little this week and have some training days beyond the recovery and preparation cycle we have been in. This has enabled us to practice some key areas of our game, which we feel www.cambridge-united.co.uk

we will need between now and the end of the season. When we played Forest Green earlier in the season, they showed then and have shown a number of times since what a good football team they are. They have goals, maintain possession and penetrate well and have a good balance of experience in the team. It’s no surprise to see them competing at the top end of the league and one of the favourites for an automatic spot. The first meeting between us didn’t go our way but we have to attack this game with a new energy and vigour, to show we are capable of competing with them and that we can score points against them. As we enter into our final ten league games of the fixture schedule, we now have an even split of home and away games. The next batch of games is a really exciting challenge, and will be a good test for us. We’ve earned the right to enjoy it, to attack it and to embrace it. The expectations on us to be here were nonexistent, and so the longer we can spoil the party, the better. That’s an exciting challenge for us. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to FGR who are sitting just behind us in the league and will be just as keen as us to walk away with three points today. The season is clearly hotting up at the top and this week’s midweek results show just how unpredictable games are. We all need to be ready for a rollercoaster ride with some highs and lows. Oddly, because of Covid restrictions and iFollow, all of our fans can watch all of the games live. Who knows where we will end up. What we do know is that this team will give it all they have to deliver as many points as they can. As exciting as the football is, this week has been dominated, rightly, by the release of the Sheldon report into sex abuse in football from the 70’s to 2005. This 700-page document reveals a dark chapter in the history of football. We should pay tribute to the boys and men, the survivors, who stepped up to reveal the traumatic abuse that they suffered and still live with. As a club we were not subject to any criticism in the report – but that is not to say that we can be complacent. We are not, and have for some years now had systems in place to identify any problems at an early stage. This is not just about having policies in place but rather more about the actions those policies produce. These practical steps we take, across both the Club and the Community Trust, include: • All coaches having to have an up to date DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check certificate before they interact with children and young people; • Having designated safeguarding officers who have responsibility for checking systems are adhered to and engaging with young people in our care; • There is constant management supervision of coaches with frequent visits to coaching sessions; • Leadership from our Board with Director Jenny Horsfield ensuring safeguarding receives the attention it requires. www.cambridge-united.co.uk
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Above all the aim is to create a culture of openness where any concerns can be raised without fear. We want all young people to enjoy sport and we will continue to do all we can to let them do that in a safe and caring environment. On a brighter note all of the indications remain that fans will be allowed back into the Abbey at the start of next season, and ideally, for preseason games. We will continue to update you all as the situation becomes clearer. For now, please continue to support us on iFollow. Not only does this help us financially (it really does) but it is great that you can all share in the moments that make football so special and many more moments will happen in the next 10 games. For now, enjoy this game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Forest Green Rovers ———— Forest Green Rovers have been recognised as the greenest Club in the world, but it’s the sustainability of their promotion charge which will be utmost in the minds of their supporters. The Gloucestershire side appear well equipped to be right in the mix come the end of the season, with the combination of an entertaining brand of football and the handy knack of grinding out results when required. Challenging at the top of League Two is a far cry from the Southern League Days of the late 90’s, but Forest Green have always had ambition, and the green revolution inspired by
Chairman and owner of Ecotricity, Dale Vince, has driven substance off the pitch as well as style on it. A new Stadium is also on the horizon – the aptly named Eco Park - Forest Green fans will be hoping it’s hosting a higher level of Football once it opens.
THE FORM
Mark Cooper’s side have won seven of their last eleven league matches with only two defeats in that spell. Saturday’s victory over Harrogate made it CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V FOREST GREEN ROVERS
9 seven points from the last nine available following a draw against Morecambe and a win on the road at Grimsby. In Jamille Matt, Forest Green possess one of League Two’s most potent strikers – he’s bagged 16 league goals in 33 appearances this term and has hit the net seven times in his last eight games. Away from home, Rovers have an enviable record – like the U’s, they’ve notched nine league wins on the road, with only Cheltenham bettering that stat. They’ve won four of their last five away outings, including impressive victories at Newport and Carlisle. Their overall record in the league this season reads: Played 34, Won 17, Drawn 10, Lost 7
THE MANAGER – MARK COOPER

Peterborough, but his tenure at London Road was a short one. The managerial role at Darlington followed, before a return to Kettering. The 52-year-old had a two year stint at Swindon, taking them to the League One playoff final in 2015 where they were beaten 4-0 by Preston. Following his departure from the Robins, he joined Notts County on a short-term deal before being offered the job at Forest Green. He took Rovers into the Football League for the first time in their history in 2017, beating Tranmere in the play-off final to end a run of 19 consecutive seasons in the National League. His competitive record since joining Forest Green reads: Played 248, Won 101, Drawn 65, Lost 82 ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— So a whole week without a game. I do forget sometimes that we didn’t start the season until September but thank heavens we have a straight Saturday run in from now on in. Did anybody notice that Oldham had tangerine flecks in their kit last week? Well after ten minutes I thought we had been well and truly tango’d but you know, never underestimate the resilience of this side, particularly when wearing amber shorts, although in truth I think we were all perplexed as to why we were
DID ANYBODY NOTICE THAT OLDHAM HAD TANGERINE FLECKS IN THEIR KIT LAST WEEK? WELL AFTER TEN MINUTES I THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN WELL AND TRULY TANGO’D wearing amber shorts in the first place. In fact many watchers queried why we weren’t wearing Cambridge and Oxford blue……. modern football, eh? Penning these notes originally on Wednesday morning and surveying the aftermath of the Tuesday night fixtures, my old man’s sagacious wit springs to mind….”always best to have the points on the board, my old son.” Let’s concentrate on 20 March then for our regular cavort down Cut Throat Lane and a dip in to nostalgia (sort of). This day in 1979 was an interesting one in that we finally played Millwall at home at the third time of asking. Originally a New Year’s Day game but snow and ice put paid to that, which I neither remember nor recall that there was ever that sort of weather at that time of the year. In fact I’m 56 and I swear that I have seen 55 dull, moody, mild but not very white days at that time of the year! Anyway the game with Harry the dog and his mates was rescheduled to 27 January and guess what…...you see I always www.cambridge-united.co.uk
think the end of January is the worst time to play football, meteorologically, and yes it was called off again. Who knows what happened to the original programme print (rare?) and when the second date came round ANOTHER programme was produced……… We finally get to 20 March (with former programme with an insert) and at half time we are one nil down. Was it worth it? Actually, yes, as messrs Murray and Biley turned things round in the second half to put it up the New Cross boys (including a certain Dave Donaldson), in front of a reasonable crowd of 5,301. Enjoy the game, the programme and stay safe. And remember, we are United in Endeavour. Bye for now. ■

DAVE———MATTHEW-JONES FANS ELECTED DIRECTOR ——— When I first became Fans Elected Director (FED) following a vote by members of CFU I was given two additional roles by the club. The first was inherited from Colin Proctor and was to assist Ian and Mick with work around the Abbey Stadium. The second was the role of Supporters Liaison Officer (SLO). The roles of SLO and FED are both about representing and assisting all supporters. Within my remit is the following line: “The main aims of the Fans’ Elected Director are to represent CFU and all supporters’ interests.” To carry out all these roles I have no budget. I have to beg, borrow and re-use whatever I can, whenever I can. Thankfully, both CFU and CUFC Lottery (organised by members of CFU) have been able to help with finance, assistance and advice to ensure that the projects have been completed where possible. These projects have been done on behalf of all supporters and not just Trust members. Both home and away supporters have benefitted from the changes made around the ground. During recent years when I have spoken to or worked with politicians, national groups and other club representatives I have done so with the premise that the supporters trust works for everyone and is representative of everyone involved with the football club. I am a firm believer that issues change at a National Level and that is where to find the most amount of help. Since the pandemic started the welfare of all supporters has been at the forefront of my thoughts. With the support of CFU we were firstly able to create the “You are Never Alone” programme last year which signposts supporters to national organisations and then “Abbey Chat” which is about listening. We have built a team of volunteers to assist with this. Now at a National Level the Football Supporters Association (FSA) has started #Terracetalk which is based on the above and recognises our concerns at a National Level. It also going to be a long-term campaign capturing the work being down by supporter www.cambridge-united.co.uk
groups across the country. Diversity is another area where work has already commenced and, through my contacts at the FSA, we have been able to commence work with Anwar (Fans for Diversity) on making our club more diverse. Communities are changing everywhere and football clubs need to change with them. Clubs cannot any longer rely just on the traditional groups to build their supporter base. Unless clubs change with the times then they will no longer be the local football club and the fan base will shrink and become smaller with each generation. We need to welcome all groups and individuals and we must make sure that everyone is welcomed and feels comfortable. While talking about coming to the match we need to re-build the links that will see existing supporters come back when lockdown allows. It will be over a year before many will have been able to start coming again. Preparing for the return of supporters to matches will require us to work on improving all areas of the matchday for all supporters. We need to aim for perfection everywhere if we can. The EFL has schemes such as “Family Excellence” and “The Away Supporter Experience” for us to use to improve upon and ensure everyone’s experience when dealing with the club is a good one, shared by everyone. Jock Stein once said “Without fans who pay at the turnstile, football is nothing. Sometimes we are inclined to forget that. The only chance of bringing them into stadiums is if they are entertained by what happens on the football field.” however, nowadays for supporters it needs to be about far more than just what goes on the green area Please contact me via dave.matthewjones@cambridge-united.co.uk or follow what is happening via the www.facebook. com/CambridgeUnitedFootballClub facebook site www.cambridgefansunited. org website or now via twitter SLO@ CambridgeUTD

Supporters now haven’t visited the Abbey for over a year, we know everyone is missing attending games and a lot has happened in that period. I can imagine if we were under normal circumstances that the abbey would be rocking and that we would have a bumper crowd today for the visit of Forest Green in what is probably the biggest game of the season to date. We understand as a supporter trust more than ever the importance of engaging with the fans of the club and are working with the football club at achieving this in several ways. It looks unfortunately like it will still be a while before we can welcome the return of everyone at the abbey therefore we would like fans to contact us (cambridgefansunited@outlook. com), with your Block, row and seat number in the main stand and we will reply to you with a photo of the view from your seat. There is still time to sign up for CFU and become a member. If you sign up currently, we are offering new members a discount in the club shop. We have over 300 members now and will be shortly hosting our first Player Q & A for CFU members. If you would like to find out membership details, please visit; www.cambridgefansunited.org CFU has being proactive again in last couple of weeks in several ways. The abbey ward area is the most deprived ward in the city of Cambridge, and we want to be able to help people who are our neighbours within proximity of the abbey stadium, as well as the www.cambridge-united.co.uk
wider community. We have recently set up two new relationships within the abbey ward area. We visited the Cambridge Cyrenians Community Garden project, they provide work experience, therapeutic horticulture sessions and a supportive network to anyone who is rough sleeping or living in a hostel or who may be vulnerable to homelessness. The site of the community project is based directly behind the south stand of the stadium on the Whitehill road allotments. The community group relies a lot on donations and support from local people for the project to run annually. Members of the CUFC Lottery and CFU donated some much-needed funds to ensure the project could buy items needed to keep the allotment maintained. We have also been in contact with Nicky Shepard the CEO for abbey People, who is working closely with Barnwell Baptist church at providing an Abbey food hub in the ward. We have discussed how as a supporter trust we can offer support to the food hub and how to encourage fans to donate items and help. We have created a flyer for fans highlighting the details of when visits to the food hub can happen for donations and for those who maybe in need to use the hub. CFU is working hard at reaching out to people within the community and helping others and will continue to try and make a difference for everyone! ■ United in Endeavour

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— ENGLAND IS THE PARADISE OF INDIVIDUALITY, ECCENTRICITY, HERESY, ANOMALIES, HOBBIES AND HUMOURS GEORGE SANTAYANA
It will be difficult for today’s game to match the thrills and spills of our last game at Oldham. Many of our fans turned into Marvin the Robot, announcing with total confidence that the promotion dream was over, the wheels had come off and that we had been flattering to deceive until March. After that, United scored four times to show everyone that you can never write them off. Two down after ten minutes, playing into a gale and being refereed by a man who often looks like he has his own private rule book, things looked bleak. We were even able to survive a plainly ludicrously awarded penalty which Callum Burton saved. It was our day and there will be more. We have all had setbacks. Newport have had some poor results, Forest Green lost heavily to a poor Southend side and this week Cheltenham lost at home to Barrow. There is not much between the teams at the top and I expect a tight finish. I don’t see us falling away though. And what of Forest Green? Their story is the stuff of romance. Their ground is perched on the top of a hill in Nailsworth, a scantily populated rural idyll where you might go to live a life of rural bliss and solitude. It is a stunningly beautiful place and one wonders what the likes of Portsmouth or Ipswich will make of it if Rovers are promoted? I have many fond memories of going there, watching their fans playing skittles and drinking cider in their supporters’ club. One year their former Chairman directed us to a space in their car park before thanking us for coming. A lovely man. If they are promoted, it will show that the dream is still alive for little clubs perhaps, a far www.cambridge-united.co.uk
cry from the football world being controlled by the big boys in the Premier League and envisaged by the TV companies. Of course the club has been bankrolled by millionaire owner Dale Vince and it would be disastrous for them if he lost interest in football in the way that he lost interest in the Green Centre in Swaffham, which remains closed to this day. He is a risk taker and something of a visionary, introducing solar panels and banning meat products from the ground. I have always had visions of the players running off to McDonalds after games but who knows. We know Mark Cooper from his time at Kettering. I remember advising him not to go to Peterborough where the atmosphere was still toxic after the first sacking of Darren Ferguson. But that’s another story. It should be an interesting game.■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
