Fan noticeboard WELCOME Today’s Contents:
Welcome back to the Abbey once again for the third of three successive home games. There is no doubt that there was a feeling of frustration in the air after Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Fleetwood, largely down to the fact that the team did so well to fight back from an early set-back and were well worthy of all three points. Tonight’s match is another opportunity to claim victory though and with the team in the top half of the League One table, there is plenty to be positive about for U’s fans everywhere. Enjoy tonight’s programme - it includes some fantastic features and interesting reads across the board. United in Endeavour.

Tonight is another challenging game as you can always expect from a Steve Evans team and another club well established now in League One. Gillingham had an excellent season last year and will no doubt hope to build on that this season with some good experience in their team and a powerful group of players. We will need to be aggressive and dominant to make sure we are competitive in the game. We hope to add to Saturday’s point against Fleetwood Town, a result that was tinged with disappointment as we had a number of good chances and defended well to limit their opportunities in the second half, once we had got ourselves in front. I thought the two goals we scored were of excellent quality and our wide players were superb throughout the game. What is clear from the replays is that we should have had a penalty in the last minute of the game. Sam Smith was pulled down in the box and incredibly, he was adjudged to have made a foul. The only other option other than a penalty was to allow our promising attack to continue. They say decisions balance themselves out over the season and we hope that plays out as we have had two big ones incorrectly go against us this season. The first being that we should have played at Plymouth against 10 men for a red card offence by a
Pilgrims defender, who was later to be banned for 3 games by The FA. After today we travel up to Crewe, at which point we will be at the 10-game marker in the season It is still early days of course but it is a marker that gives us time to reflect and see how we have started. We need to focus on consistency and point scoring on as many days as possible and the ability to put together consecutive wins or point scoring days will prove crucial to us throughout the season. In the past few weeks we have really started to feel the club come back to full life and normal times. I have sat in an all-staff meeting at the stadium for the first time in 18 months, spoken at the Community Trust Strategy launch event, the Business 100 Club with our club partners and spent some time with Darren Marjoram at the training ground as we seek to improve the link and support with the Women’s team. All the component parts that make up our club are special and underscore just how much impact we can have across the city. The momentum and the atmosphere has been great so far around the ground and on Matchdays, and here’s hoping that we can all keep working well to maintain it. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO
Welcome to Gillingham on their first visit to Cambridge for a league game in 20 years and three days. Then the score was 2-2. Both sides drew on Saturday and doubtless both will be keen to win tonight. We are now eight games in and sit at 12th in the league with a game in hand over seven clubs sitting above us. This is not the start almost all pundits expected at the start of the season and we have seen a resilience in the side, both in winning at Portsmouth after a defeat, and then coming from behind on Saturday against Fleetwood. There is no doubt that League 1 is a step up in quality but we are showing we are up to the challenge. Also doing well this season is our women’s team. They had had a tough game on Sunday v league leaders Hashtag United but they have produced some good results and entertaining football. They usually play on a Sunday though their next game is a true local derby – away at Cambridge City, at the Ely City football ground, tomorrow night – 29 September. Remember all season ticket holders can watch for free. Another date for your diary is Sunday 14
November when the women will be taking on QPR at the Abbey. The team would really appreciate having some vocal support so do try to get along to a game. Away from the pitch I will be meeting with CUSP on Friday, 1 October, to listen to feedback on how we have been doing off the pitch so far this season. Do pass on questions or comments to the CUSP committee. I appreciate there have been some difficulties with queuing for food and drinks although we have made some significant improvements including replacing all of the Chip and Pin machines to speed up service. Where we can serve beer from tea bars, we will be using barrels once we have used up the cans which were bought in as suppliers ran out of plastic bottles due to a national shortage. Like other hospitality venues we have experienced some staffing shortages but we are growing our loyal and reliable team who are keen to serve with speed and a smile! Back to the football. There is something special about an evening match under the floodlights. Let’s get behind the team. Be loud and proud. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors GILLINGHAM FC Gillingham are tonight’s visitors and will be making the 170-mile round trip to the Abbey Stadium, having failed to win in any of their last five League One outings. Victory for Steve Evans’ men could take his side up to 16th – however that feat remains unlikely given the Gills’ inferior goal difference to sides around them. Defeat could see the side from Kent drop into the bottom four. Despite recent woes, the Gills could ease early relegation fears if they can find a way to turn draws into wins – having shared the spoils the most times in the division thus far (five of nine occasions this season). Kent’s only EFL representatives have become League One ever-presents following their

relegation from the Championship in 2005 – competing in the third tier in 12 of the past 16 seasons. Despite a slow start this season, Steve Evans’ men will be aiming to push on and really challenge for the League One play-offs, having finished tenth twice in the last two seasons. Gillingham fans will be hoping towering striker Vadaine Oliver can spearhead their side to more this season after scoring 20 goals in all competitions for the Gills last season. The former Northampton striker is joined in attack by experienced head Mustapha Carayol, who made the move to Kent from Adana Demirspor in Turkey during the summer. The former Ipswich and Middlesbrough man
boasts impressive experience playing in the Europa League. Youthful loan acquisitions of both Daniel Adshead and Charlie Kelman, from Premier League sides Norwich City and QPR respectively, will give Steve Evans’ side more depth in midfield and attack. While the signing of Max Ehmer, who made his return to the Priestfield Stadium after making over 200 Gills appearances prior to joining Bristol Rovers, will certainly shore up the defence. Alex MacDonald’s impressive 25-yard strike against former employers Oxford United earned the Gills a point at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday, cancelling out Matty Taylor’s opener for the hosts.
Prior to Saturday, ‘keeper Jamie Cumming impressed as Gillingham rode their luck a little in a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic. Despite boasting an attacking two that have both enjoyed 20+ goalscoring seasons in the Football League in recent seasons, goals have been few and far between this season for Steve Evans’ side – scoring more than one goal on just one occasion in League One this season – in the Gills’ 2-1 win over Morecambe last month. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES Tonight, we welcome the supporters, playing staff and officials from Gillingham. My favourite recollection from previous meetings between the sides was seeing Trevor Benjamin make his professional debut as a 16-year-old, against Gillingham in a 0–0 draw. Throughout his time at the Abbey, he could never be faulted for his effort and work rate. Since the beginning of the season most supporters have welcomed the work rate, application and determination showed by Mark Bonner’s team. In response the players welcome the support and backing they are getting. Let’s keep the partnership going. Last week representatives of the FSA held an online call with Nadine Dorries, the new secretary of state for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, to discuss the on-going Fan-Led Review (FLR) of Football Governance. She was joined by sports minister Nigel Huddleston. The meeting was introductory in nature but all supporters present had the opportunity to outline their thoughts on the FLR and praised its interim recommendations. Both ministers outlined their ongoing commitment to the FLR with the report’s recommendations due in October. The supporters on the call did a great job speaking about the nature of owners being temporary custodians and how intimately linked even the biggest clubs can be to their local communities. A number of fans on the call were from clubs which had recently been in crisis and they told of how motivated their fanbases were to save their clubs. Both ministers were also reminded of the importance of the FLR to the women’s game and how diversity issues mustn’t be sidelined either – no sport brings together people from different backgrounds like football. Last week the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) were also contacted by the Sports Ground Safety Association (SGSA), who told them that the option for football clubs to offer licensed standing at all levels of the game in England and Wales had been passed into
official Government policy. The FSA has always argued that standing could be introduced – an argument backed by the overwhelming majority of supporters. There is a tradition of fans standing at games as it increases choice, improves atmospheres and ensures supporter safety when hosted in properly managed and licensed standing areas. Everyone on the Portsmouth Away Travel coach were really excited and pleased when the team coach also stopped at the same service station on their way home. The players were happy to have their photographs taken and chatted with travellers. It is great when everyone at the club can create special moments. Future Away travel trips can be booked for the Crewe, Doncaster and Shrewsbury trips via the following website www. cambridgefansunited.org/store/c19/ Away_Travel.html We have mentioned the Picturepath app that helps SEN children. The online user guide is there to assist you when downloading it see https://youtu.be/XBYUkzyb1oA I am really pleased to hear there has been a lot of positive feedback from various sources. The introduction of the app has been the catalyst for other organisations, clubs and schools to contact the company about using the app. Here again the club has helped others in the community. Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Evenin’ all, as Dixon of Dock Green fame used to say. I know, that rules anybody out born after about 1968. Welcome to the Gills from Medway for our first home evening league fixture of the season and indeed our first scrap in the league with the Gills since October 1999, our first season back up in Division 3 - blimey. The home side ran out 2-1 winners that day at Priestfield. When I see Gillingham’s name, I always think of Brian Moore and Paul Scally. Whatever anybody thinks of the individuals, two people with an indisputable contribution to the very fabric of Gillingham FC over the decades. On this very day in 1957 we were on Eastern Counties League duty and hosting the then league leaders, Spalding Utd. We were tenth at the time so a tough afternoon beckoned and it proved to be so as the visiting Tulips ran out 3-1 winners, although ‘our’ Brian Moore got a pen just before half time. You will see from today’s featured programme that we had a certain Wilf Mannion in our ranks but even
he couldn’t uproot the opposition. Nor indeed Russell Crane playing his sixteenth season for the black & ambers. Browsing through the programme I find the ad pages as fascinating as the articles. I wonder if our former commercial manager has any links to ‘Fairbairn’s’ – I am sure Nick will tell us. And looking at HR Aldiss in Rose Crescent reminds me where I purchased my very first Harrington Jacket in the 1970s. A warm welcome awaits us at the Wrestlers on Newmarket Road. What would they have made of becoming a leading Thai restaurant/pub forty years later and counting, I wonder. And “U’s Nu’s” is a different take on your average news bulletin page although I am not aware it ever caught on in subsequent seasons. On this day in 1968 that great inspiration for a footy song, Hey Jude, went number one in the charts and stayed there for nine weeks. Enjoy yourselves. ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen
“Sorts do not build character, they reveal it” Heyward Brown Any conversation about Gillingham will, inevitably, bring up the spectre of manager Steve Evans. His visits to the Abbey Stadium have always been colourful and memorable, if not always for the right reasons. Sometimes the fans sitting near to the dug-out are known to have heated exchanges with a man known for his heated exchanges with officials. I remember, with considerable distaste, some clashes with Crawley Town, who were well skilled in the unsavoury practices of Gamesmanship and if I dare to get off the fence, one might almost have labelled them with a stronger tag. He has long been a controversial and very divisive character, having, amongst other things, been prosecuted for tax evasion whilst manager of Boston United, who he had taken into the Football League. Many felt that they should not have been allowed to be promoted, given the number of “financial irregularities” uncovered at the time. He has, however, been a serial winner. He took Rotherham to two successive promotions and all is teams are notoriously difficult to beat. He is also feared by many match officials who find his abrasive style hard to cope with. Sometimes the police and the authorities have helped out. His first two matches as Gillingham manager were accompanied by a yellow and then a
red card but since that time, I am told, he has mellowed. Last year when we beat them, surprisingly easily in the Papa John’s Cup, he was fulsome and generous in his praise for the home team. Redemption is possible for all of us. If my notes seem a little negative, the theme was promoted by the performance of Fleetwood on Saturday which, at times, reminded me of the Crawley of old. They too were a skilful team in red and masters of most of the dark arts. If any of Ged Garner’s antics had been spotted by the alarmingly inconsistent Paul Howard, he would surely not have finished the game. At times, our approach play was scintillating. We deserved three points but we will earn our just reward over the whole season. One thing we do know now. We are here on merit. ■

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP Wigan Athletic’s blistering start continued after they assuringly overcame Cheltenham Town 2-0 at the DW Stadium. A goal in either half from Callum Lang and Charlie Wyke saw the Latics cement their place at the summit as they stretched their unbeaten run to seven games. A first loss in five for the Robins moves them down to 14th and just two points from the top 6. Tied on 19 points are Sunderland after Carl Winchester’s early strike proved the difference as they edged out Bolton Wanderers 1-0. Firing, the Black Cats are one of four sides to have only tasted defeat once this season. The Trotters, meanwhile, slip to 9th after consecutive losses. Leading scorers MK Dons secured their fifth win in seven matches and remained third after dispatching ten-man Wycombe Wanderers 1-0. After defender Anthony Stewart received his marching orders, Troy Parrott made no mistake from the spot to separate the sides and move their promotion rivals down to 6th. Plymouth Argyle’s sizzling form proceeded thanks to a late 2-1 comeback win over Doncaster Rovers. The basement side took the lead early in the second half through Jordy Hiwula, but two second-half penalties from Luke Jephcott and then Conor Grant at the death handed the Pilgrims a win as they seared to an eighth game unbeaten. Rotherham United are in the play-off picture but are now four points adrift of 4th after rueing late mistakes in a 1-1 draw at home to Crewe Alexandra. The Millers were in the ascendency and looked good value for victory after Ollie Rathbone drew first blood, but they were denied in stoppage time when Chris Porter netted from a spot-kick – which also saw Wes Harding sent off. The solitary point sees the Railwaymen stay in 23rd, two points from safety.

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V GILLINGHAM F.C.
The shares were spoiled at the Mazuma Stadium as 10-man Morecambe played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Accrington Stanley. Cole Stockton’s early opener was imminently cancelled out by quickfire strikes from Colby Bishop and Matt Butcher. The lead lasted six minutes after Adam Phillips volleyed home, before the pattern of the game changed for the hosts on 39 after Shane McLoughlin saw red. Stanley made their advantage count when Bishop grabbed his brace midway through the second half, but they were to be denied by Stockton’s 8th of the campaign who wrapped up the afternoon’s proceedings. A first draw puts John Coleman’s men 7th and leaves the Shrimps in 16th. Shrewsbury Town climbed out of the relegation zone with a come-from-behind 2-1 success against AFC Wimbledon after Luke Leahy and Daniel Udoh cancelled out Dapo Mebude’s opener. With just one loss in five, Steve Cotterill’s side are improving. Despite defeat, the Dons are a creditable 8th, the first of 8 teams nailed on 12 points. Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth’s dreary runs continued as the sides battled out a 2-2 draw at the Valley. The visitors took the lead twice – through Ronan Curtis and Marcus Harness respectively – but the Addicks fought back thanks to Sean Clare and a late Josh Davison finish to earn their sixth point of the season. Cutting a frustrated figure, Pompey are 10th and without a win in six. Substitute Conor Chaplin’s 90th minute goal rescued Ipswich Town a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday in a pulsating clash at Portman Road. The Owls, who led for most of the game thanks to Dennis Adeniran’s dipping volley, are in 11th whereas Paul Cook’s men make up the last of the relegation battlers. Neither side could be separated at the
Abbey Stadium as newcomers Cambridge United played out a 2-2 draw with Fleetwood Town. The Cod Army were handed the dream start when James Hill headed home in the 2nd minute, but the U’s turned the game on its head with time after Adam May and Shilow Tracey pounced. A sweet Paddy Lane strike on 76 rescued the point for the visitors, who are now unbeaten in five. Mark Bonner’s men are also in good form. After scoring and conceding 12 goals thus far, they sit in 12th with yes, you guessed it, 12 points. Tonight’s visitors Gillingham recorded their third draw in four after sharing a 1-1 tie at Oxford United. Matty Taylor’s first goal since August put the hosts into
the driving seat, but they were denied on the half hour mark when Alex MacDonald struck a long-range equaliser to earn a precious point. Looming in 13th, the U’s have one win in six and will hope to turn the tide. Lincoln City were the only away side to travel home victorious as Lewis Fiorini and Anthony Scully fired them to a 1-2 win at Burton Albion. A scrambled finish on the 86th minute from Conor Shaughnessy gave the hosts hope, but it was just a consolation as the Imps returned to winning ways and consigned Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s troops to 15th and without a win since mid-August. ■ Owen Mizon

United entertained the Abbey on Saturday in a thrilling encounter with Fleetwood Town that ended in a 2-2 draw. After conceding with just two minutes on the clock, the U’s fought back with gusto to take the lead through goals from Adam May and Shilow Tracey, only to be pegged back with 15 minutes remaining.

Community Trust
‘FOREVER UNITED’ PARTICIPANTS GET KNITTING FOR LOCAL CHARITY A group of seniors that are part of Cambridge United Community Trust’s Forever United programme have been busy over the last few months knitting blankets for local charity Wintercomfort for the Homeless. Back in March 2020, the Community Trust recognised that seniors would be most at risk of isolation and loneliness during the pandemic and so put systems in place to support them. They made wellbeing checkin calls, opened up a Community Careline, set up weekly Virtual Afternoon Teas and organised monthly ‘garden-gate’ visits where their Community Engagement Manager, Simon Wall, would visit seniors to have a catch-up at a safe distance and deliver activity packs. It was in these activity packs that participants were first introduced to special challenges that they could take part in to help keep themselves occupied during periods of self-isolation. These challenges included the Great CUCT Bake-Off and the Great CUCT Knitting Bee. “It was vitally important that we gave people something meaningful to do during lockdown,” explained Simon, “Some of them hadn’t been outside for months and they were struggling with their mental health. The knitting challenge was particularly successful because they knew that what they were doing would really make a difference to someone’s life”. Overall, well over one thousand squares were knitted which were then sewn together to make ten amazing blankets. Some seniors even knitted extra hats and scarves. Cambridge United Community Trust have strong links with Wintercomfort, who provide life-changing support for rough sleepers and those at risk of homelessness in the city, so it felt right to donate the blankets to them. “Wintercomfort are great admirers of the work that Cambridge United Community Trust does to create a sense of together-ness for those at risk of isolation. The recipients of these blankets, hats and scarves will be so

grateful not only for the comfort and warmth they bring but also for the thought and care that has gone into each one.” Anyone wishing to donate wool or take part in the challenge, please email simon.wall@ cambridge-united.co.uk ■
Academy UPDATE It has been another action-packed fortnight for The U’s Academy seeing our U18’s produced impressive displays, scoring eight goals in their previous two games against Stevenage and Oxford United. However, it wasn’t to be this weekend, after suffering a defeat to Southend United in the Youth Alliance Cup, a defeat in which would be our first of the season. Our Schoolboys continue to go toe-to-toe with some of the best young players across the country, as we look to continue our great work ensuring we have the most diverse games program. Last weekend, despite playing in our South East Youth Alliance fixture against MK Dons, our Under 9 – 12’s had a mixture of games, playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers
and Tottenham Hotspur as well as seeing our Foundation Phase players making the trip to Manchester United. Finally, our Under 13 & Under 14 squads travelled to Kirkby, to play Liverpool. Of course, given the national freak-out over seeking fuel, we were thrilled that the weekend went ahead and the boys had the opportunity to play against some of the best young players in the North West. We are incredibly thankful to the parents for their efforts as well as the staff for ensuring the weekend went ahead amongst the travel chaos! We wish Mark and the Team all the very best this evening and hope we can continue to show how we are developing as a team at this level! Up the U’s. ■

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE
CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |
View from the Press Box Doug Shulman It was encouraging to see a good number of U’s fans – 2,025 to be exact - attending the EFL Trophy win against Tottenham last Tuesday evening. The competition has certainly divided opinion since its inception in 2016 following a restructure of what was known as the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy or Football League Trophy or, going back further still to 1983 and it’s launch, the Associate Members Cup. The introduction of Premier League B or Under-21 sides for some, is an unwelcome change, but as a standalone match, the win for Mark Bonner’s men over a young Spurs side was a more than decent spectacle, with some high-tempo football played throughout. It also allowed Ben Worman another opportunity to further his development, 16-year old Kai Yearn to show us again what an exciting prospect he is and, importantly, Leon Davies and Jubril Okedina could to re-introduce themselves to competition football after injury lay-offs. Leon in particular, had been on the sidelines for some time following a hip issue, which surfaced at a moment in his career when undoubted talent had seen him established as a first-team regular, predominantly since Mark Bonner took charge. A big part of United’s resurgence at the back end of the 2019/20 campaign, then 19 games during the first half of last season, had seen him surpass 60 appearances in black and amber. Let’s hope we now see for more of Leon galloping down the right-hand side of the U’s midfield. Last Saturday saw another highly entertaining game played out at the Abbey and, despite the U’s being pegged back by Fleetwood with 14 minutes left, a 2-2 draw was perhaps a fair reflection of the match. The quality of the two goals scored by Mark Bonner’s side were – as the saying goes worth the entrance fee alone. The power
behind Adam May’s long-range equaliser – his first at League One level - brought the roof off the Abbey. The atmosphere was then cranked up by a 4,429 crowd who at times made themselves sound like double that number, following Shilow Tracey’s second half strike. The goal, brilliantly engineered by the impressive Jack Iredale, who has adapted seamlessly to a higher level of football, neatly summarised the determination that underpins this U’s side. It is no surprise for me, that given a run of just 1 loss in 6 league games, the side are now comfortably inside the top half of the table, with the luxury of a game in hand on sides above them. A win this evening may make that fledgling League One placing look even better. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

CFU Corner Ben Phillips & Andrew Stephen The CFU caravan has recently undergone a makeover and alongside the evergreen Matchday Programme sales, 50-50 Golden Gamble tickets and the CFU backed Away Travel ticket outlet, is the new Programme Exchange. For the past few years 100 Years of Coconuts have been assembling a comprehensive library dating back to the inception of Abbey Utd Matchday Programmes, in 1947. Thanks to kind donations from U’s fans, the post 1970 element of the CUFC Programme Library is now almost complete. There are, however, still a lot of gaps in the pre-70s section, particularly late 40s and early 50s. 100 Years of Coconuts are appealing to fans for help to complete the project. Obviously donations are preferable, but, as the ones still needed are illusive, a fair price can be agreed. Gathering dust in the dark recesses of an attic is no use to anybody. Helping to complete the library would be a magnificent gesture for which every donators name will be included for posterity. Likewise, the completed library will not be hidden away in some dark cupboard but will be available, as part of the Club museum/archive, for any fan or researcher to readily access. Past donations have helped fill gaps and duplicates have provided a way of raising money to enable the acquisition of other, rarer editions, which can cost anywhere between £50 and £200 when they surface. Currently there are complete sets of Home Programmes available, for most post 1970s seasons, which can be purchased for £5 per pack. There are hundreds of other Home and Away Programmes, spanning the full 75 years, that can be picked up for as little as 50p each. Simply fill out a request form at the CFU caravan and we will see if we have a copy of the one you need. All proceeds from the sale of historic programmes will be used to purchase the missing ones.

100 Years of Coconuts are the clubs official historian group and are also part of the CFU group. They will be holding their annual CUFC Hall of Fame dinner on 25th November, which is always a great night for U’s fans when former players and fans favorites get inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. There are still some limited tickets available for this event which includes a two course meal. If you would like to find out more, please email 100yearsofcoconuts@ gmail.com. CFU has also recently set up a food bank and unwanted football kit and boots collection at the caravan, so if you could help by donating food or unwanted football kit and boots, it would be greatly received. Finally, away travel is being run by CFU this year and has proven a popular way for fans to get behind Mark Bonner and the team on their League One travels. There are still spaces left for Crewe away this Saturday, priced at £30 a seat. The coach departs Ely at 7:45am and the Abbey Stadium at 8:30am. You can book your place on the official away travel by emailing emailcfuawaytravel@yahoo.com or by calling 07591111251.
