FAN ———— NOTICEBOARD WELCOME ———— Welcome to this weekend’s Digital Matchday Programme for Cambridge United’s final game of the season, at home to Grimsby Town. It has been well documented what a challenging season this has been for everyone involved in football, so the fact that Mark Bonner’s men have the opportunity to win promotion today, is of real credit to him, the staff and all of the players in the squad. It is also a credit to you, the supporter, for the way you have backed the club this season throughout all of the challenges. Hopefully this will be the last Programme that we produce without supporters here at the Abbey and the last time we call for your support via iFollow. It certainly hasn’t been the same but thankfully the team haven’t let that affect their performances and they have provided many memorable moments to supporters from afar. So, for the final time, make sure you buy your Match Pass ahead of kick-off to not miss a moment of the action.

MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————

So today sees us play our 46th Sky Bet League Two fixture of the season. The Carlisle United game back in September now seems some time ago after an intense and compact season, but to arrive on the final day with a great opportunity ahead of us is credit to everyone’s hard work up to this point. Grimsby Town come here today under new ownership and at the end of a challenging season, they will no doubt be able to re-focus and re-energise over the summer ahead of a new era for the club and its supporters. We wish Paul Hurst and everyone associated with the club the very best in the future as they embark on a challenge we know well of attacking the National League for an EFL return at the earliest opportunity. Our recent results may not have gone to plan and despite a mixed bag of www.cambridge-united.co.uk

performances, we have been able to enjoy the break since last Friday to refresh and train ahead of today’s game. I’ve always been impressed by the attitude of the players and their willingness to work and stick together. Obviously those qualities will be required this afternoon against a team who will make it difficult for us. I must say congratulations to Paul Mullin for his award as Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season and to Wes for his nomination. And also to Paul, Wes and Kyle for their selection in the Team of the Year. These are all excellent achievements and deserved recognition for their individual performances and contributions to our team so far. We go in to the game focused and aware of the consequences. Our job is to hold our nerve, trust ourselves and enjoy the experience and the opportunities ahead of us. Thank you for your continued support. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to The Mariners who come to Cambridge today occupying the bottom spot in the table and destined for the National League. They are however showing some good form of late having picked up nine points in the last five games. This is will be a tough test for the U’s despite what the table may suggest. On any level this has been an extraordinary season. One where, for the most part, we have not had fans in the Abbey. This has coincided with our best league performance in many years. Clearly we all hope that it can be capped with the right result today – one that lifts us into League 1. If we have learned anything this season though, then it is that nothing can be taken for granted. There was another league table produced this week which should be welcomed by all associated with the club. This was the Fan Engagement Index - https://fanengagement. net/fan-engagement-index/ This index, which is organised by an independent body, the Fan Engagement Network, ranks clubs on their dialogue with fans, their transparency and governance. These are all areas where, in the not so distant past, the club has come in for some criticism. It is therefore particularly pleasing to see that out of the 92 clubs that make up the Premier League and the EFL we are ranked a very creditable third. A considerable amount of credit for this goes to our fan elected Board member, Dave Matthew Jones as well as director, Godric Smith. Dave has been a strong and driving force in the quest to improve the relationship between club and fans. Godric was instrumental in setting up CUSP as a forum for, amongst other things, sharing information with fans. Looking forward there is no reason why we cannot continue to build on the work done to date, working alongside CUSP and CFU under the direction of James Mills and Andrew Stephen respectively. One topic of interest for many fans is when we plan to put season tickets on sale? We have held back on selling them this season for a couple of www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

reasons. Firstly, it will be helpful to know which league we will be in. Secondly, and I think more importantly, we want to know with as much clarity as is possible, when fans will be allowed back to watch games and on what terms. Our hope is that by August we will no longer have to impose social distancing and we can open the turnstiles up to our capacity. Following the success of pilot events at the Crucible and other venues the indications are looking good. I suspect most of us did not think we would, apart from the odd game, go a whole season without fans. We continue to rely on your support through iFollow where, last week, you broke our record for passes sold – 2,505 – being the highest number for the fixtures last weekend. So, for now, please download your pass and, hopefully, enjoy the game.. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— grimsby town fc ———— It has been a sad season for today’s visitors Grimsby Town, whose relegation back to the National League was confirmed on Tuesday 27th April following a 3-2 defeat to Exeter in which the Mariners twice led. It marks the end of a five-year spell back in the EFL, after the Club worked so hard to earn back their place after six years in the National League between 2011 and 2016. Paul Hurst was the man who led Grimsby to promotion in 2016, and after leaving the Club for spells at Shrewsbury, Ipswich and Scunthorpe, he returned in December 2020 to try and arrest the Club’s slide down

the Sky Bet League Two table following the acrimonious departure of Ian Holloway. Results weren’t forthcoming though as under his stewardship, Town won just once in 14 games, including eight defeats, to start his tenure back at the Club. Ultimately, this proved to be Grimsby’s undoing as a substantial gap at the bottom of the table started to grow, with fellow strugglers such as Stevenage, Scunthorpe and Barrow pulling away from trouble. However, with many new players now in the building following a busy January Transfer Window and Paul Hurst’s methods beginning CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V GRIMSBY TOWN FC

9 to sink in, Grimsby started becoming difficult to beat and gave their fans hope as they moved towards the final months of the season. Indeed, the Mariners have only lost twice from their last 14 league games, drawing seven and winning five, but it was too little, too late as their fate was sealed with two games to spare. There is hope for Grimsby supporters that brighter times are ahead though, with the new ownership consortium of Jason Stockwood and Andrew Pettit announced on Wednesday of this week – a story that has been rumbling on all season long and news that the Club’s supporters have been eagerly anticipating for many years.■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— Today, we reach the final match of the season and there is still so much to play for. We wish Mark and everyone involved every success in getting us over the final hurdle. What this group has achieved so far this season cannot be underestimated. They are an example of what can be achieved when everyone is pulling and working together. United in Endeavour. Hopefully, this will be a catalyst for the future. I would like to thank all the club’s supporters for their patience, understanding and support since March 2020. It has not been easy watching the side while taking part in lockdowns and isolation. The financial support also provided by everyone throughout the pandemic enabled us to plan early and allow Mark to get the pieces in place on the pitch for the seasons start. It also enabled Ian Darler to get a pitch ready in time for August. Everyone has played their part both on and off the pitch. Last week everyone in football came together in support of the social media boycott. The hope is that by everyone joining together the Social Media companies can be forced to do more to prevent and stop online abuse. The constant abuse on social media received by footballers and people in the game, as well as others across the world, which goes without any real-world consequences for perpetrators, can’t go on. We are not naïve enough to think that the boycott alone will eradicate online discriminatory abuse, which is why everyone involved will continue to take proactive steps calling for change and progress.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

If you have experienced or witnessed discrimination on social media, you can report it to Kick It Out through their online reporting form or via their reporting app available on both iOS and Android. You should also make your local police force www.cambridge-united.co.uk

aware by filing a report here. You can also report posts to the respective social media channels by using the following links: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | TikTok | Snapchat | YouTube By reporting online abuse, you can help stop the behaviour and protect other people from seeing the abusive content. Online abuse does not have to be experienced directly by someone in order for that person to report. Everyone has a responsibility to report online hate they see. Since the Stevenage programme article was written, the European Super League has been stopped in its tracks. It may have only been put on the back burner until the clubs find another way of achieving their aims. It is now a pivotal time for everyone involved with the game and wants fairness in football to take back control. The need to seize this opportunity has to be taken. The opportunity that enables fairer competition and financial security for all football clubs not just a few. It also needs to guarantee supporters a real voice at all levels. One that can be heard and listened to throughout the game. The Fan Engagement Index results were released this week see https://fanengagement.net/ fan-engagement-index/ it proves that sometimes size doesn’t matter but what you do. Cambridge United may not be perfect but there is a real effort and desire to get it right. It doesn’t seem long ago that we were relegated from the Football League. I hope that Grimsby do well in the future and return to the EFL soon. They have some really good supporters who are passionate about their club’s future in the same way as we were at the time Finally, take care over the summer and look after yourselves. Hopefully, we can meet again in a few months at the beginning of the next season. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon, folks. How’s your blood pressure? I was on medication long before the Stevenage game so you can imagine I’ve been keeping well away from the Doc’s these past few days! The third bite of the cherry, eh? As somebody said the other day, just don’t concede. Well I assume that wasn’t the philosophy before the Harrogate game… It’s always difficult approaching a game with a clean sheet in mind, I always think. But if we could pick our opponents this week, it would be Grimsby at home, wouldn’t it? We will be all right.

MANY TEARS WERE SHED AT THE ABBEY IN MEMORY OF A BRAVE, TALENTED GOALKEEPER AND A MODEST, UNASSUMING BUT QUIETLY HEROIC MAN For our final trip of nostalgia this season we have two fixtures in mind on this date in May, both testimonials - of sorts. In 2010 a benefit match between CUFC and Steve Fallon’s team of ‘legends’ was organised in recognition of Fallon’s overall contribution to football in the region. A crowd of 900 attended. Trevor Roberts was my first U’s hero. Signed from Southend in 1970 following Bill Leivers’ controversial decision to dispense with the services of Rodney Slack, Roberts quickly established himself as the Number 1 with some brave performances behind a defence coming to terms with their first season in the Football League. He fell ill before the end of 1970 and had to have an operation to remove parts of his lung. Five months later he was remarkably back in the side and was first choice at the beginning of the 1971/72 season. His problems returned in early 1972 and lung cancer was diagnosed which quickly spread to his brain and the specialists soon advised him he had to quit pro football. On 8 May the Club organised www.cambridge-united.co.uk

a testimonial at the Abbey involving a combined U’s and Southend side and a visiting West Ham side led by Ron Greenwood. The home side won 3-2 in front of 6,309. Andrew Bennett’s excellent ‘Champagne and Corona’ summed up subsequent events rather well: “Roberts’ brave battle for life ended less than a month later, on 2 June in a Cambridge nursing home at the age of 30. He left behind his wife and a six-year-old son. Many tears were shed at the Abbey in memory of a brave, talented goalkeeper and a modest, unassuming but quietly heroic man.” Bye for now and see you in August. ■

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Strap yourselves in for the final matchday of the 2020/21 campaign. Relegation may be confirmed, but what remains so unpredictable is the promotion race. With the top three all suffering defeat, there’s still a title at stake and play-off positions to be grabbed. What we can guarantee is that final day drama is about to ensue. For one final time, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of Sky Bet League Two. Front runners Cheltenham Town will become the champions of the division this afternoon if they can secure three points, one week after squandering that chance after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Newport County at Rodney Parade. A sublime 25-yard strike from Joss Labadie four minutes into the encounter proved the difference as the Exiles climbed to 5th, extended their unbeaten run to four games and all but secured their passage into this season’s play-off pack. The Cambridge United faithful will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky this weekend, with the sole task of avoiding defeat after their second attempt at securing promotion was cruelly wrecked in a breathtaking 5-4 loss to Harrogate Town on Friday night. The hosts raced into an emphatic three-goal lead with just 20 minutes on the clock - a Brendan Kiernan brace and a Mark Beck tap in leaving United shell shocked. Mark Bonner’s side valiantly clawed two goals back in the space of three minutes through Wes Hoolahan and Luke Hannant, before Kiernan claimed the match ball on the 32nd minute to wrap up a preposterous first half. A Paul Mullin brace to take his tally to a recordequalling 31 goals in a single campaign looked to have handed the U’s their ticket to League One, before Kevin Lokko popped up with six minutes remaining to secure the result for the Sulphurites. Simon Weaver’s side, who went on to win the 2020 FA Trophy on Monday, sit in a creditable 16th. A place and point behind United are Bolton Wanderers, who require maximum points to secure a quick return to the third tier after suffering a 1-2 loss at the death against Exeter City. The Trotters

looked to be on their way after 15 minutes when Gethin Jones drew first blood, but an inspired second half saw the Grecians nick it when Randell Williams and a last-gasp Pierce Sweeney strike put them up to 8th and a point from the top 7 with a superior goal difference. Another cagey game for Ian Evatt’s men, all of their last 13 games have either been edged out by one goal or seen a share of the spoils. Expect more of the same in a topsyturvy afternoon. Morecambe remain in contention for a first promotion to League One after seeing off Walsall 0-2 at the Banks’s Stadium. Cole Stockton’s 12th league goal of the season and a Yann Songo’o header helped to seal a play-off position at the minimum for the Shrimps, an applaudable achievement for a side who have experienced many years languishing near the basement of the division. A win today, alongside a favour from Crawley Town, is what’s required for Derek Adams’ side. Ten-man Forest Green Rovers reignited their playoff push with a battling 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers. Josh Davison and Aaron Collins gave the hosts a secure lead after Ebou Adams’ third dismissal of 2021 upped the tension. A thumping Kieron Morris strike deep into stoppage time was just a consolation for Rovers, who remain a place and two points above Jimmy Ball’s men. Both sides still have work to do in the tussle for the fourth promotion spot. A first defeat in five for Salford City could prove costly as they were well-beaten 1-0 by Colchester United. Josh Bohui capitalised on a first-half sending off for Di’Shon Bernard by scoring his firstever league goal to secure his side’s status in the division. The Ammies, who finished with nine men after Ash Hunter saw red in stoppage time, know a third year in the fourth tier is extremely likely. A late George Tanner strike handed Carlisle United a thrilling 2-3 win against Leyton Orient, their first success in seven. Both sides have enjoyed a steady campaign, sitting 10th and 11th respectively, CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V GRIMSBY TOWN FC

25 and will have high aspirations of improving on that ranking next season. Another encounter packed with drama was hosted at the Lamex Stadium, where Stevenage were forced to a 3-3 tie against Crawley Town. The midtable sides have proved hard to beat under Alex Revell and John Yems, with squads well equipped to become dark horses next time out. Port Vale’s nine-game unbeaten run was brought to an end as a Matt Green goal proved enough to earn relegated Grimsby Town a 1-0 win. Despite the setback, the Valiants remain optimistic for the 2021/22 season under Darrell Clarke’s tenure. The Mariners, on the other hand, have lost just three in their last fourteen and will be hopeful that taking one step backwards will allow them to take two steps forward. In a battle between two sides who had lost their previous five in a row, it was perhaps obvious that

the shares were spoilt in a stalemate between Bradford City and Scunthorpe United. The point was enough to preserve League Two status for the Iron, who had hit poor form at a worrying time. A George Lapslie brace inspired Mansfield Town to a cruising 4-1 victory over Oldham Athletic, with the Stags leapfrogging them in the process. There’s now been 150 goals in the Latics’ 45 games this season, with Keith Curle’s side scoring and conceding the most out of any other side. To conclude, Southend United’s 101-year stay in the Football League came to an end despite a 1-2 win against Barrow. Goals from John White and Terrell Egbri secured the comeback after Scott Quigley had put the Bluebirds in front. “It’s not time for tears,” stated boss Phil Brown after the match, adamant that if his side have a competitive budget, he’s more than committed to the National League challenge. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— THERE IS ONLY ONE THING THAT MAKES A DREAM IMPOSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE: THE FEAR OF FAILURE PAUL COELHO

It hardly seems possible that this should be the last game of the season, if indeed it is. Three results are still possible for us. We will either be Champions, merely promoted or in the playoffs. Before a ball was kicked in anger this season we would all have been very happy to accept any of these outcomes. Yet, following defeats in our last two games, a depressing howl of outrage has been heard all over social media as if some kind of uncaring betrayal has taken place. Fans are always passionate and we all long for those successes which make a lifetime of devotion worthwhile and which enrich our memories. However, in football, as in life, you get what you get. Had we won the last two games, as most people expected, we would already be Champions. Bolton and Cheltenham have also wobbled and we all know just how unpredictable end of season games can be. “Unpredictable” hardly does justice to the extraordinary game at Harrogate which, upon calmer reflection, we should have won. We had so many missed chances, their fourth goal was offside and Paul Mullin should have had another penalty right at the end. I am trying to be objective but the weather, the pitch and, yes, the referee seemed to conspire against us. At first it seemed like a horrific repeat of the cup game at Guisley, but this was a different kind of debacle. There are no bad apples in the current squad. We made mistakes and were severely punished. They rode their luck to some extent. To be successful you need to be talented, consistent and lucky. At the www.cambridge-united.co.uk

end of the season the table doesn’t lie. If we are promoted it will be because we deserve it. Finally, a word for our opponents, who will be feeling desperately disappointed and would love to be in our position. They too will be considering all the ‘what ifs’ and ‘if only’s’, and they will come to us like a wounded tiger, as we went to Rushden all those years ago. Grimsby are a proud club with great fans. It has been their turn for a bad season and I hope that they bounce back very soon. The response of fans to the ‘Greed comes first’ policy of the Big Six shows that the loyalty they feel to their clubs, as opposed to their owners, is beyond price. I hope that all Cambridge fans are celebrating by Saturday evening but, if we believe in fair competition, we have to accept that anguish is sometimes part of the deal. COYU’s ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track

Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
