MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————
Happy New Year to all Cambridge United supporters. We were delighted to set off on the right foot in 2021 with a hard fought, gritty win up at Grimsby Town last Saturday. Sometimes you simply have to find a way to win games, and we saw last week that it can be done on a day where many of the conditions made it a tough task. The conditions were far from ideal, we faced somewhat of an unknown Grimsby side under a new manager, on a playing surface that was tricky to say the least. But overall the players showed good character and a level of fight to get themselves over the line. In all likelihood we’ll need to repeat that in the weeks ahead. We all know this time of year can be tough, not just in terms of football but in life generally. And so for us now it’s about asking ourselves, how good can we be when conditions aren’t ideal? What can we achieve? We need our leaders to step up, and those www.cambridge-united.co.uk

that haven’t been leaders before to find a voice and play a part too, as we look to string results together in whatever way we can. It will be a busy schedule over the next month, and we know how close the league table is. Three weeks down the line we could be in the top three or down to 12th, neither of which would mean we’ll be promotion favourites or out of the play-off race. However, the focus remains on all of us collectively focusing on points game to game, willing to show that level of fight, intensity and energy required. We were pleased to open our business for the January transfer window with the arrival of Jubril earlier this week from Tottenham. His defensive qualities and athleticism are good qualities to bring into the team, and he adds cover across positions defensively which will stand us in good stead for the remainder of the season, however long that may last. Jubril’s hungry to get himself into the starting team too and that makes for strong competition with the options we already have and improves us. We’re hopeful that we can come to an arrangement for Hiram to extend his stay with us and hope he can make an equally positive impact when fit and available, knowing that Liam O’Neil is also progressing well in that area of the pitch too. And we are also working away at adding some pace and width with an addition in this window that will also improve an area we feel can supplement what we already have in our squad. Today’s game against a Harrogate side who have a strong away record in their first full league season, will be another where we have to match their aggression and energy. We will be fresh after a week without a midweek fixture and I want to see us display that in our desire to force our way of playing into the game. And knowing this team I have full faith they’ll give their everything to do just that. Thanks for your continued support wherever you are in the world, and as ever please keep safe and well during these difficult days.■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to Harrogate for your first visit to the Abbey. Harrogate is a place I know reasonably well having worked for a while in Skipton, just down the A59 on the other side of the brilliantly named Blubberhouses Moor. It is a wonderful part of the country though winters can be tough as illustrated by their last two games being called off due to a frozen pitch. The U’s along with all other EFL clubs, tested all players this week for Covid 19. I am pleased to report that our tests were all negative. We have worked very hard at doing all we can to keep Covid away and we will continue to do so. There are strict protocols which have been put in place by the EFL and we have been careful to observe them. Earlier this week I, along with several others from clubs across the country, repeated our call for the PFA to cover the cost of regular testing. On Wednesday we got the news that the PFA would fund twice weekly tests. It took a while to get there but this is very helpful. Identifying players and staff who have Covid, at an early stage, will help us to limit the spread of infection and, in turn, will minimise the chances of games being called off. Some have called for a “circuit break” in the season but our view is that this would not help. It would store up many games to be played later on, rather than far fewer if we deal with this on a case by case basis. The hope is that the combination of adherence to protocols and regular testing will get us through this tough season. This week also saw the introduction of our third National Lockdown. This is different to Lockdown One. Then we didn’t know how that would unfold. We were not allowed to play football and we didn’t know when we would be able to start. The club immediately lost gate income. We, along with most other football clubs, faced a very difficult financial as well as a health crisis. In the period since March the measures we put in place mean that we are confident will see our way through to a time www.cambridge-united.co.uk

when life returns to something like normal. Our key message to fans is, first and foremost, a wish that you stay safe and well, and secondly one of thanks for your continued support. This has been overwhelming and will continue to be vital throughout 2021. The coming weeks will be difficult for many, therefore should anyone feel the need to talk, please know that we are here for you. Our fantastic Community Trust did a tremendous job in supporting our local community through Lockdown One with the Here For U’s campaign. Once again they are there to help those who require support physically, practically or emotionally in the coming days, weeks or months. The Community Careline number for those wishing to access support from 9-5pm on weekdays remains the same: 01223 632129 We all look forward to the day when we can open the doors of the Abbey to all of you. In the meantime, we will continue to look after your club. Enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— HARROGATE TOWN ———— Forget fancy tea rooms and famous residents (Gareth Southgate), it’s the exploits of the football team that has helped to put Harrogate on the map in recent years. Success has steadily been brewing for the Sulphurites, who only became a professional outfit ahead of the 2017/18 season – and the move paid off in grand fashion as they won promotion to the National League for the first time in their history. A play-off campaign followed in 2018/19 which eventually ended in heartbreak at the hands of AFC Fylde before they went one better 12 months later. The Yorkshire Club were flying high in second place in the National League last term before
the campaign was curtailed, the break in play didn’t affect their momentum, though as playoff glory was achieved at the expense of Notts County. After a fairy tale end to last season, Harrogate have adapted pretty well to the rigours of League football at the first time of asking. They announced their arrival in League Two in style with a 4-0 win at Southend and have navigated themselves to the relative comfort of 17th place in the division.
THE FORM
Unpredictable would be a fair summary of Harrogate this season. Yes, they’ve lost five of their last seven in all competitions, but dig a CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V HARROGATE TOWN
9 little deeper into the stats and it’s clear they’re not an outfit to be taken lightly. They have won two of their last three games, with both successes coming away from home against Exeter and Oldham respectively. In fact, their away form is strong generally – 19 of their 25 points this season have come on the road and no team in the division has won more league matches on their travels. Bradford, Grimsby, Mansfield and Southend have also felt the force of the Harrogate away day juggernaut – the problem for Town, is that the juggernaut turns into a Robin Reliant at home – they’ve taken just 6 points from a possible 27 on their own patch (worth noting that they did have to play their first two home league games at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium due to pitch renovations), and have claimed just one league win at the EnviroVent Stadium – that came against Barrow back in October.

THE MANAGER – SIMON WEAVER
Simon Weaver has enjoyed plenty of success in his 11 year tenure in the hotseat with Harrogate. The rise through the footballing pyramid in recent seasons as well as a run to the second round of the FA Cup, has all come under the stewardship of the 43-year-old. Weaver’s playing career saw him feature as a centre half for Clubs such as Doncaster, Lincoln, Kidderminster and Scarborough before taking the role as player-manager with the Sulphurites. The fortunes of the Club, with Weaver in charge of the playing side and father, Irving at the helm as Chairman, have been transformed, culminating in achieving EFL status for the first time in their 106 year history. ■

PLAYER INTERVIEW ———— JUBRIL OKEDINA ———— Meet Cambridge United’s new loan signing, Jubril Okedina, as the Spurs youth product exclusively speaks to the match programme to discuss why Cambridge United felt the right place to take the next step in his career.
in pre-season. It’s been a journey of ups and downs since I started playing for Tottenham, but now I’m at an age where I feel ready to play first team football and I’m really happy Cambridge is the team to give me that chance.
Welcome to Cambridge United, how exciting a move is this for you? I’m very excited about what’s to come and I was very excited to join Cambridge United. I’m ready to kick on and show everyone what I’m made of. I feel like this move will help to really kick-start my career. I’ve spoken to the manager (Mark Bonner, Head Coach) and really enjoyed my first day training with the team.
You’ve briefly touched upon your playing style. I know you’re capable of playing at both right back and centre back, what would you say is your preferred position of the two and describe your defensive style for us. I’m an athletic defender, I’d say I’m quick, strong, like to be aggressive. I like to be quite vocal, and they’re skills I feel I’ve improved especially this season. I started playing right back last season, all of my career before that though I was playing at centre back. I enjoy playing both positions, I’d maybe edge towards saying I prefer centre back but I do still enjoy playing at right back.
For Cambridge United supporters who maybe aren’t too aware of your story, tell us a bit more about you as a player and an overview of your career to date? I joined Tottenham from the age of eight and have been there since then. I’ve been involved with the U23s this season, scored a couple of goals. I’m a defender that really enjoys the defensive side of the game, but this season I’ve managed to chip in with a few goals as well. I’ve featured on the bench for the first team
Like you say you’ve spent a great deal of time in the youth set up at Tottenham, and you’ve mentioned about your involvement with the first team there on occasions too. How much of a platform do you feel that’s provided you for your career ahead? CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V HARROGATE TOWN
11 I’ve trained with players Harry Kane, Son, and it’s testing. I always look to bring what I’ve learnt by training with them, and bring it into my game to show what being a player at Tottenham has taught me. Cambridge United have some very experienced and good players too and I always want to learn, and I’m keen to show what I’ve learned during my time here at Cambridge. What was it about Cambridge United that felt like the right Club for you to come to? It was more about the opportunity to learn. For people like me who don’t have a lot of first team football experience, it’s good to move to teams like Cambridge, who are in a good position in the League and in a challenge for promotion. Cambridge was the best team for me. Playing for promotion and in League two feels a more serious prospect, where you’re battling every game for points. The points feel more important. I’m ready to kick on and battle for the three points every game. How much do you know Jack Roles and have you had the chance to speak to him about his time at the Club last season? Yeah Jack said it was a good Club, a good environment, the group of players were friendly and welcoming. I spoke to Jack and he
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
said to me he thought it would be a good loan at a good Club. He obviously had a good spell here, played a lot of minutes. You’ve had the chance to meet this season’s group of players this week, how have you found those first few training sessions and how have the lads been at welcoming you in? The lads were very welcoming. I’d done my research on the defenders especially so I knew who they were and what they were about. The sessions have been good, and very enjoyable. Mark (Bonner) is a good coach, and I’ve spoken to him a few times and he’s good guy. He obviously has a plan and he’s told me how the team play and how I fit into that. And just finally, it’ll obviously be important for you to gain those minutes and build your experience at a strong competitive level, what are your overall aims during your time here at Cambridge United? Between now and the end of the season, I genuinely just want to learn as much as I can. Work hard to get myself a place in the starting eleven and hopefully do what I can for the team as they battle for that promotion. But it really will be just about learning as much I can to show what I’m made of. ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon, all. Bit of a mixed break, wasn’t it? A good way to end the festive season at Blundell Park. I actually started the break on Christmas Eve in bed with Gastroenteritis so, after waxing lyrical about bubble and squeak in the last programme, you can imagine that was a fair way down my list of priorities! I pretty much surfaced in time for the Stevenage game which let’s be honest set me back another 24 hours. Anyway, enough of my “man flu” (my new name in the house here over Christmas), welcome to the Sulphurites from Harrogate. I genuinely don’t know the history of the nickname but am speculating that it comes from their bright yellow shirts? In which case I’m surprised we haven’t adopted that sobriquet in the past (needle stuck, I know). If you didn’t know better you might guess they’d have a nickname with a posh tea rooms connection? For example, the cake trays or the crustless cucumber sarnies or even the tea leafs. Wait a minute, we’ll stick with the Sulphurites. Let’s not forget that Harrogate were competing in the Northern Counties League as recently as 2004 and gained two promotions in as many seasons 2019 and 2020. And not to be confused with Harrogate Railway Athletic FC who remain ensconced in said Northern Counties League. Name of their ground? Station View, of course. Our little nostalgia trip today takes us back to 1970/71 again and our baptism in League football. 9 January 1971 saw us hosting the Shots from the Recreation Ground. Our second meeting of the season after a 2-2 draw at the Rec back in September. The return saw another stalemate at 1-1 in front of 4,823 at the Abbey, King Bill Cassidy netting for the U’s. The match programme followed the INTO THE LEAGUE livery constant all that inaugural season, with the famous (infamous?) UIE badge under the club’s name. Sorry to see that the Black & Amber Shop wasn’t quite ready but all things www.cambridge-united.co.uk
black and amber et al could be purchased at the CUSC and the pools office, wherever that was. Good to see adverts from Jim Reynolds the Rock King (eat ya heart/sugar mouse out, Nick Hornby) and the ABC BAR BQ on Mill Road, never the same by the way since my mate from school’s family sold up and moved on over ten years ago. Finally, just to remind you all that on this day in 2007 Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, let a little new ‘phone out of the bag at a convention in San Francisco. A smart move it seems. Enjoy the game and stay safe. Bye for now.

COMMUNITY TRUST —— Lockdown 3.0 Community Trust Update —— It has been an incredibly difficult start to 2021 of course with the announcements from the Prime Minister at the start of the week. The coming weeks will be difficult for so many within the United family. Should anyone feel the need to talk, please know that we are here for you. Between Monday and Friday, 9am-5pm, a mental health first aid trained member of staff will be available on the Community Careline number: 01223 632129. This number is available for anyone that requires emotional, practical or physical support. The vast majority of our activities, sessions and programmes will be taken online – however the government has made an exception for disability sport and thus our sessions will be able to continue with extra precautions being taken to ensure the safety of staff and participants. You can sign up for any of our updated sessions HERE. There are a few different initiatives which we will be running for this lockdown to continue to support U’s fans. Why not join our Virtual Exercise Club: Move with U’s to take part in challenges, keeping fit at the same time? Another way we are supporting children in Cambridge is Call For The Ball. To boost physical & mental wellbeing, initially for children in CB1-CB5 postcodes, we’re giving new

footballs to those that do not own one. With over 200 requests in the first two days – we’re sure to be busy and you can scan the QR code to request one or donate to help us purchase further balls HERE. Finally, our Seniors’ activities continue. Scan the Forever United QR code to find out more about how we’re keeping seniors connected and healthy and how you or someone you know can access it.
CHRISTMAS UPDATE
The Christmas period was definitely the time for giving for Cambridge United Community Trust. As an early Christmas present, we donated 120 sets of kits (in total worth £5,400) to 12 schools in our local community to thank them for their support throughout the difficult year. We also wanted to ensure that our local seniors were keeping healthy, engaged and connected. As well as ringing round all of the football club’s senior season ticket holders, we dropped off Christmas presents including Cambridge United calendars, scarves, activity packs & so much more to those who have been taking part in our Forever United activities. We also took our mascot Marvin the Moose to The Gretton School for a special visit to our Every Player Counts disability football session participants. Check it out HERE…

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Happy New Year to you all! May you be blessed with prosperity, peace and hopefully come 5pm, three points. As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations from an extremely contrasting weekend of Sky Bet League Two football. Off-field dilemmas and a heavy flurry of snow around the country enforced the postponements of six out of a scheduled twelve fixtures. They were the following: Barrow vs Exeter City, Bradford City vs Morecambe, Colchester United vs Tranmere Rovers, Harrogate Town vs Cheltenham Town, Newport County vs Southend United and Forest Green Rovers vs Oldham Athletic. The latter was abandoned on the hour mark with the score at 1-1 due to poor weather conditions. As you’d expect, it’s ultimately transformed the league table and boosted the significance of the games in hand. It may be a new year, but it’s the same unpredictable division. That paved the way for Carlisle United, who climbed to the top of the table with 39 points to their name after an assuring 0-2 win over Walsall. Their early superiority was rewarded just before the half hour mark when Omari Patrick rounded off a fine move by lashing into the top corner. The points were sealed after 78 minutes when a neat Joe Riley cross found Joshua Kayode, who converted from 12 yards. The Cumbrians, now with just one loss in seven, were languishing in 21st this time last year, so it’s testament to Chris Beech that the side are now considered title contenders. Where the Saddlers are concerned, they’ve lost three on the bounce and sit in 11thafter a satisfactory first half of the campaign. Cambridge United returned to winning
ways on the road with a battling 1-2 victory over Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. Adam May ensured it was a perfect start for the U’s when he fired home on the 4th minute. The advantage was doubled in the run up to half-time when a long ball from Harry Darling found an onrushing Paul Mullin, who expertly rifled home his 20th of the season. The Mariners looked rejuvenated after the break and went close twice through Kyle Bennett, but it was Elliott Hewitt who provided the hosts with a late consolation. Astute defending at the death from United ensured it was a frustrating return to the helm for Paul Hurst, whose side now occupy a place in the relegation zone due to a hefty goal difference. Mark Bonner’s side rise to 5th and will be adamant to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time since October this afternoon. At a snow-laden Macron stadium, Crawley Town moved into a play-off position and stretched their unbeaten run to eight league games with a resolute 0-1 success over Bolton Wanderers. Captain George Francomb rounded off a superb passing move on 61 to wrap up the win for the in-form Red Devils in their first ever league meeting with Ian Evatt’s side, who ended the game with ten men after Reiss Greenidge was dismissed at the death. With just one win in six, the Trotters lie in 15th and just three points from 20th. Leyton Orient grabbed their sixth win in seven games at Brisbane Road as they overcame Salford City 1-0 in a tense encounter. The O’s capitalised on an early Brandon Thomas-Asante sitter by converting one of their own attempts on 31. An excellent turn and venomous shot from talisman Danny Johnson CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V HARROGATE TOWN
25 was a deserving decider for the London outfit, who climb to 9th. The Ammies had the opportunity to immediately bounce back on Tuesday night, as they travelled to Mansfield Town with the sole aim of breaking into the coveted top seven. Mansfield Town kickstarted the new year with a barnstorming 4-0 rout over Port Vale – their first at Field Mill all season. Ollie Clarke set them on their way in the first minute, before Jordan Bowery latched home his first to secure a healthy lead at the break. Leon Legge received a second yellow card for the Valiants minutes into the second half, with Bowery capitalising on the extra man advantage by securing his first career hat-trick as the Stags wrapped up the routine success and travelled to 19th. The below-par start for Vale, who
have won just one in twelve and sit a lowly 17th, resulted in the dismissal of John Askey on Monday. Stevenage hauled themselves out of the relegation zone and made it back-to-back wins with a 3-1 comeback victory over Scunthorpe United. The Iron took an early lead through Devarn Green, but were pegged back by an excellent response as two quickfire Charlie Carter strikes sent Alex Revell’s side ahead. The hosts continued to hold their opponents at bay, before sealing the points at the death when substitute Aramide Oteh finished off a solo run with an emphatic attempt into the top corner. Now with just the solitary loss in seven games, Boro are three points away from Scunthorpe in 20th with a game in hand over their rivals. ■

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
