MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————
Merry Christmas to all U’s fans wherever you are in the world reading this. This is a Christmas unlike any other for many of us and whilst things are far from normal at this moment in time, we send all of you our love and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year and just hope that 2021 can bring us some joy. On the field we continue today against Leyton Orient, a team who hold a similar record to ours this season. We know from previous meetings that they have some real quality in their side and play with creativity demanding us to be on top of our game. Our recent batch of results have included two solid victories and strong performances here at The Abbey but we cannot hide from the stats of a drop in form and points. The overall points return in our most recent block of games hasn’t kept up with the early season pace we set. We know we are in control of our own performance and therefore need to knuckle down on the detail, take responsibility individually and collectively for ourselves and make sure we push for points to keep us in and around the top half of the table and in touch with the top seven. www.cambridge-united.co.uk

We have a good squad and whilst we will try to add one or two faces to keep things fresh and be ready for an intense period of games from January, the togetherness and performances of this group of players have been good. We have to find consistency in our performances again as that gives us the best chance of returning points in games. This will be built from our attitude, motivation, and competitive spirit first, and then our quality second. The challenge is great for this team over the next month with so many games. But we need to start today. Nobody is quite sure what the coming months have in store but what is certain is that whoever handles the ups and downs best will come out of these times in the best position. We held this as a mantra in the early stages of the season and need to get back to it in the months ahead which will undoubtedly be full of surprise. 2021 is something to look forward to, we have a club right now that is handling a tough year so well and your support although often distant has been felt greatly. We wouldn’t be in this position without you. Throughout an incredibly challenging year, we should all be immensely proud of how our club has behaved but also the impact we have had on the City. Let’s remain United behind our vision to build a team we can all be proud of, one players love being part of, and that positively impacts the lives of the thousands of people we engage with. Today we will be taking the knee with Leyton Orient in a show of solidarity against all forms of discrimination and racism. I know you will support the players’ wishes and some key club values by supporting this small gesture. Beyond taking the knee, we will continue to develop our knowledge and understanding in all areas of diversity, inclusion and discrimination, and together, as a united club will work with The FA, EFL, Kick it Out and with our Community Trust to work to eliminate all forms of discrimination.■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to Leyton Orient who were our hosts for our last game before lockdown in March. Sadly, we cannot offer the same fan friendly environment you provided then. I have never been inside an actual washing machine. This year has though, felt like being in a virtual one: Stop, start, tumble, spin and then when you think it’s finished it starts again. No one could have imagined what living through a pandemic would be like. It has been a year like no other, well not for a few hundred years. Don’t worry, this is not a diary of the events since Spring but, as 2020 draws to a close, I wanted to share a few reflections on what, for all of us, has been a tough time. It has also been a time when lots of good things have happened. As a football club we continue to work our way through the obstacles that Covid has thrown up and I think we can all take some joy from the fact that we will emerge in 2021 with a strong and united club. In March the rapidity of infections led to a lockdown which many thought would last for just a few months before normality returned. The club went into hibernation with all but eight staff being on furlough. The gates were locked – but the kitchens were open. The Community Trust mobilised the “Here for U’s” campaign. Meals were delivered and isolated people received phone calls. It was a bit of a lottery who got the winning tickets – a call from Mark Bonner or a player. Runners up got a Board member! In virtual meetings big decisions were taken one after the other: Ending the season early - for the first time since WW2; a squad and salary cap were agreed - talked about for years and now they happen, and they will help the game be more sustainable; restart the season; plan for fans to return in a “Covid safe” way; a trial game v Fulham U21 then plans are halted; then, fans can come back; I learn about seating bubbles and Porta Loo fan ratios! in us – a mentally healthy club, comments on the Premier League rescue deal and the return of fans and, of course, our flying start to the season. We learn to love iFollow and at least one of our Board discovers what an HDMI cable is for. Now we are back to what feels like another lockdown. At this game we should have had 2,000 in the Abbey. It is not to be, but what our year tells us is that this will pass. Vaccines will succeed in cleaning the virus out of our lives to the point when we can have our lives back – a beer in the bar and a moan with our match day mates, without a mask. Until then, huddle in your bubble, plug in your cable and watch the match in your Covid secure home. We are on the spin cycle. The machine will stop in 2021. Enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Leyton Orient ———— To say League Two is competitive is a bit like saying 2020 has been an odd year – it’s an obvious statement, but in keeping with the last twelve months or so, let’s look at the data. There are two points separating the top three, three points separating fourth to seventh and below that there are eight teams that are five points or fewer from the play-off positions. Orient, despite having a topsy-turvy season so far, are one of those sides in the chasing pack. The campaign started in promising fashion – four straight wins in all competitions was reason for optimism, which was quickly tempered by a run of two points from a possible fifteen. And that’s been the pattern for Ross Embleton’s side since – a good run,
followed by a rocky patch as consistency remains elusive. They are in touch, though - O’s supporters will be hoping a good Christmas period will see them underline their credentials as playoff contenders.
THE FORM
December hasn’t bought a great deal of cheer for Orient. They went into the festive month having won three on the bounce, but it’s now four defeats in five matches in all competitions following the home reverse to Crawley last weekend. Overall, The London Club have lost eight of their last twelve in league and cup, the CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V LEYTON ORIENT
9 one win in recent weeks – in keeping with the unpredictable nature of their season so far – came at home against league leaders Newport. Orient’s form on the road hasn’t been bad this season, with wins at Oldham, Tranmere, Stevenage and Port Vale helping them to a haul of 13 points from their ten away matches in the league – the solitary draw came at Barrow. They have, though, lost their last two away from the Breyer Group Stadium returning from trips to both Scunthorpe and Morecambe empty handed.
THE MANAGER – ROSS EMBLETON
Ross Embleton is fast approaching his one year anniversary as Orient’s permanent

manager, having impressed in an interim role following the departure of Carl Fletcher. The 39 year old had two stints in temporary charge having initially stepped up from assistant following the tragic passing of Justin Edinburgh. Embleton began his coaching career at the O’s centre of excellence before joining Tottenham’s academy. He has also had spells with AFC Bournemouth and Norwich as well as a stint as a first team coach at Swindon. His competitive record since being named permanent manager at Orient is: Played 37, won 16, drawn 7, lost 14. ■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— A home Boxing Day fixture is the one I look forward to most in the calendar after the first match of the season. Today, we welcome Leyton Orient, however sadly we cannot welcome their supporters in the same way as previous years. Today, both sets of players will be taking the knee. Not everyone will agree with the decision, however, please can I ask for everyone to respect their decision to do so. Please either support the action by clapping or show respect while it is taking place. One fan wrote after the Colchester match: “To those who booed tonight not only have you upset and disrespected the players that you cheer on but you have disrespected me and my family! Not only do they deserve the right to be shown respect they deserve the right to equality! I will not stand by and let my son grow up in a world where people justify this small minded behaviour! I will challenge and report where necessary! I’m embarrassed tonight! Enough is enough!” The gesture of taking the knee dates back to the early civil rights movements as a way of showing support of political inequalities suffered by oppressed communities. Those that take the knee want to highlight that all lives should be valued and not be treated inhumanely or inferior to others just because of their race. Back in June the EFL agreed to show support to the players wishing to take this action. The FSA commented: “We believe that football must offer a welcoming environment where every member of our communities can feel comfortable and valued, and we have welcomed and supported all initiatives in this direction, including players ‘taking the knee’ as their own demonstration of solidarity with those suffering racism and discrimination.” Regardless of the stated intentions of some of those booing the players at Millwall and elsewhere, the impact of that booing has undermined the anti-racist stance and www.cambridge-united.co.uk
created a much less welcoming atmosphere in the ground – it has had a racist impact. The past year has been a difficult one, but one group of supporters that have gone the extra mile and ensured the club has been able to get through the period has been the volunteers. They have, outside the periods of lockdowns, been coming to the Abbey Stadium and helping the full time staff. A big thank you, and hopefully I haven’t missed anyone out: Les Weston, Wendy Twinn, Brian Thorby, Nigel Browne, Alan Burge, Neil Weston, Margaret and Frank Pearson, Emma Smith, Peter Ankin, Giac Celentano, Dan Weston, Paul Harrison ‘The Ticket Office and Club Shop have been hugely supported again this year. Special thanks to; Spencer Tramm, Dom Baldock, Sherrie Barrett, Ryan Middleton, Suzi Cullum, Wendy Glancy and Annabelle Glancy. MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Festive greetings, all. One of my favourite days of the year and looking forward already to my favourite meal of the year later, cold meat, pickles and good old bubble and squeak! Once I’ve finished that wonderful fare I do tend to find myself in the dining room on my own which is strange. Anyway, the O’s on Boxing Day always brings to mind the same day in 1997 which is the featured fixture and programme for today. As well as all the post-Christmas day delights, a home win, a Wanny scorcher and some great banter in the Habbin in the days when we stood over the seated away fans. All 360 of them on a good day. A crowd of 4,808. And I could have sworn the O’s wore their ‘Croatia’ shirts that day but the historians tell me not (and see programme).
A CROWD OF 4,808. AND I COULD HAVE SWORN THE O’S WORE THEIR ‘CROATIA’ SHIRTS THAT DAY BUT THE HISTORIANS TELL ME NOT That would have been the following season, 12 September 1998 to be precise (another 1-0 home win in what became the promotion season). We had already beaten the O’s at Brisbane Road 2-0 on 5/9/97 so a decent double against our ‘M11’ rivals. The 1997/8 season ended very flatly for the U’s in sixteenth position although with hindsight, as Roy Mac’s first full season in charge, one could argue it was a proper launch pad for better fortunes round the corner. And thank heavens for Martin Butler. The programme reminds us of some names from the past, secretary Steve Greenall - on the TV the other week working for a firm near St Neots, Carla Frediani, a very amiable individual, wonder what happened to her? www.cambridge-united.co.uk
And those that have passed away, eg Wally Rookes and Dave Brown, bless them. And does anybody remember the third string ‘keeper, Jed Sumner? Not a lot on the www but he did come from Coventry City. Finally, an honourable mention for the birthday wishes on page 12 and a right load of reprobates listed there. Well one, anyway. Just for a little bit of perspective, it was sixteen years ago today that a massive tsunami hit India, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Malaysia killing over 200,000 people. Bye for now.

19 CUFC CONTINUING TO EXHAUST EVERY AVENUE WITH REDUCING RISK OF COVID-19 At Cambridge United we feel it’s key to ensure the Football Club are as diligent as ever when it comes to reducing the risk of spreading Coronavirus. Like all businesses during this pandemic, the Football Club is no different in putting in place increasingly important measures to make the Abbey Stadium and the Club’s Clare College training ground facility a covid-19 friendly environment, for players, staff and supporters alike.
AT THE ABBEY STADIUM
As well as the government recommended guidance including the use of hand gel and track and trace QR codes for all visitors to the Abbey Stadium, the Club have also taken extra measures in recent months. Cambridge United have been delighted to work alongside Shepreth based scientific and apparatus solutions company, Grant Instruments, who have provided the Football Club with the latest air disinfecting technology. The AP360 Air Purifiers have been located subtly in each of the home and away dressing rooms at the Abbey Stadium, working to
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
recycle the air and kill 99.95% of known viruses including Covid-19, which means the U’s are among a very small number of Clubs able to use both their regular changing facilities whilst remaining in accordance within safety and social distancing guidance. CLICK HERE to find out more about the technology by Grant Instruments.
FANS
Cambridge United would like to once again thank supporters for the manner in which they have adhered to the guidance published for those attending the Abbey Stadium on a match day. The role played by supporters in following the precautions issued by the Club, which can be read by clicking here, has unquestionably played the biggest role in the successful and safe return of fans to the Abbey. The Club’s groundstaff have also requested Cambridge United thank supporters for the way they have used the additional bins on a matchday, helping to not only make the postmatch clear up an easier and more efficient process, but also in protecting staff. We politely ask supporters to continue following that guidance to ensure we remain United in doing everything possible to fight coronavirus. ■

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO It’s the season of giving, so what better way to top off Boxing Day than with a crucial three points? That’s exactly the incentive for our members this afternoon, who all have everything to play for in a division that continues to surprise us all. As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of Sky Bet League Two. Newport County were top of the tree for Christmas, but by the skin of their teeth after falling to a 2-4 defeat against Oldham Athletic, who consigned the Exiles to their first defeat of the season at Rodney Parade. The hosts took the lead twice through Scott Twine and Scot Bennett, but were pegged back by Davis Keillor-Dunn and Conor McAleny. Padraig Amond had the chance to win it for Mike Flynn’s side from the spot, but he failed to convert as Latics capitalised by registering late goals at the death from substitutes Alfie McCalmont and Zak Dearnley. Harry Kewell’s side have certainly enjoyed their travels this season, conjuring 19 points from nine. But sloppy home form means they sit in 14th. In a battle between two promotion rivals, Forest Green Rovers moved to second after proving victorious 1-0 at home to Carlisle United. Jamille Matt stabbed home with 15 minutes left on the clock to stretch Rovers’ unbeaten run to seven and close the gap to a solitary point behind leaders Newport. Despite the defeat, Chris Beech’s side occupy the final automatic promotion spot after four consecutive wins beforehand. Barrow recorded their third victory of the season with a surprise 3-0 win over Cheltenham Town at Holker Street. The Bluebirds, who had relieved David Dunn from his duties the previous week, ended their five-game winless streak thanks to strikes Scott Quigley, Luke James and Harrison Biggins. It sees them 22nd, but just three points from the drop. Back-to-back league defeats for the first time in nearly two years moves the Robins to 4th.
Arguably the story of the season thus far, Morecambe find themselves in fifth despite being on -5 goal difference after edging out Colchester United 1-2. After a Cole Stockton own goal cancelled out John O’Sullivan’s crisp volley early on, Yann Songo’o nodded in on the hour mark to wrap up the three points. Now three games without a win, the U’s fall to 10th. The scheduled encounter between Exeter City and Stevenage was postponed after Alex Revell’s side were hit with a positive coronavirus test. It means that the Grecians go into this afternoon in 6th, knowing a win in the arranged fixture would see them up to 4th. Where Stevenage are concerned, they sit three points adrift in 23rd but with two invaluable games in hand. Salford City entered the play-off picture with a narrow 0-1 victory over Harrogate Town at the EnviroVent Stadium. A neat finish from striker James Wilson on 17 was enough to separate the sides and condemn the Sulphurites to a fourth straight home defeat as they slip to 17th. Walsall climbed to 8th after a topsy-turvy 4-3 win over Port Vale. Strikes before the break from Tom Pope and Tom Conlon made it an assuring lead for the Valiants, but they were pegged back 10 minutes into the second half when Jake Scrimshaw and Dan Scarr converted. Devante Rodney tucked home a low cross to cancel out the equaliser, before the aforementioned Saddlers pair completed their braces with two quickfire finishes to make it four wins on the spin for the Saddlers, who are just a point from 5th. A below-par Vale are situated in 16th and will be desperate to reignite that winning feeling. Bradford City secured their first win in eight matches as they triumphed 1-0 over Cambridge United at Valley Parade. A well-executed strike from Harry Pritchard moments before the break proved decisive as the Bantams sit healthier CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V LEYTON ORIENT
25 in 21st. They travelled to Grimsby Town on Tuesday night, a crucial match for both sides at the foot of the division. For the U’s, they drop to 9th after a fourth defeat in five. Crawley Town secured a 1-2 away win over Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road. Former U Josh Coulson headed into his own net on 15 to give the Red Devils the lead, before fellow former U Tom Dallison also converted into his own goal to level proceedings. A clinical finish by in-form Max Watters, his 16th of the campaign, late on, wrapped up a rare away win. It now sees them 11th, boasting the same points and goal difference as their opponents in 12th. Tranmere Rovers consigned Bolton Wanderers to a miserable 0-3 victory on a rampant afternoon at the Macron Stadium. Veteran Peter Clarke set the ball rolling, before Kieron Morris and James Vaughan netted during the second
half to move Rovers to 13th. Three losses in four means Ian Evatt’s Trotters are 15th. Grimsby Town secured the bragging rights of Lincolnshire as they dispatched Scunthorpe United 1-0 at Blundell Park. Teenage defender Mattie Pollock grabbed the only goal of the game as the Mariners secured a first win in six and sit in 18th, a place and point behind the Iron. Southend United may have been bottom for Christmas, but optimism was in the air after a 1-1 draw over relegation rivals Mansfield Town. James Olayinka opened the scoring on 27, before Jordan Bowery’s strike late on ensured a share of the spoils. The Stags, who remain winless at home, are 20th and have lost just one in five. The Shrimpers still stay in 24th, but are now four unbeaten and starting to look rejuvenated. ■

WE MUST LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER AS BROTHERS OR PERISH TOGETHER AS FOOLS MARTIN LUTHER KING JNR.
Some of our fans may have been inspired by the reporting of the Millwall incident to boo our own players for making the kneeling gesture at the Abbey before the game against Colchester. Or they may have believed that they were booing a BLM movement now associated with Marxist extremists who hate the police. I think that we need to recognise that taking the knee, in the eyes of those doing it, is a gesture against bigotry, hatred and racism of every kind. We understand the origins of it but we must respect its intentions now. When we observe Remembrance Day here, it is always observed immaculately and in silence, even by those who are fiercely anti-war. Surely that is the dignified way to respond? The shameful disfiguring of the Cambridge War Memorial last night is an uncomfortable reminder that our society is still fractured www.cambridge-united.co.uk
and unlikely to repair itself whilst hatred and oppression are allowed to thrive unchallenged. Those who fought in the two World Wars would weep to see that the freedom and tolerance they fought for is still a long way away. I hope that, contrary to rumour, the police will make every effort to catch the criminals responsible. Theirs was a deliberate act, committed under cover of darkness and designed to cause outrage. Some say that politics should be kept out of sport. What I would say is look what Marcus Rashford has made the politicians do by using his sporting fame for good. Finally, I play walking Football with a Tranmere Rovers fan. He claims that Cambridge United have already been given their Christmas present...Golden Boots Paul Mullin. And how right he is. For the New Year I would like to see a couple of signings. I’m no coach but I think the kind of high octane football we play at our best takes it out of the players. We look a bit leggy at the moment, maybe because injuries have made the squad too small. A return of a fully fit Hiram Boateng would help too. In fact it would see us promoted. ■

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
