Fan noticeboard WELCOME It’s been a quiet couple of weeks here at the Abbey following a two-week hiatus as a result of the international break. The spirits around the ground have certainly remained high throughout the break thanks to victory in the U’s last League One outing and then a comprehensive win for Mark Bonner’s youthful U’s side in the Papa John’s Trophy against Oxford. It was another memorable occasion, made all the greater by your fantastic support. The players have performed exceptionally well thus far; long may that continue! I hope you enjoy today’s programme. It comes from the effort of many people, which is why the contributors section on this page has been included, as it is only right and fair that everybody who plays their part is acknowledged. United in Endeavour.

We are back at The Abbey this afternoon for another tough challenge against Lincoln City, who come off the back of having a very strong and impressive season in the last campaign. They have seen several changes within the squad throughout the summer but are again a strong outfit who will cause problems for every team in the division, with the aim to be as successful again this season. Our last three games here have been played in front of an excellent Abbey atmosphere and the excitement the team has generated is joined by the enthusiasm everyone has shown to be back playing in front of a live crowd. We hope this can continue to be the case and that we can create a loud, positive and supportive environment for the team to continue to flourish in.

The two-week hiatus caused by the international break is new territory for us and of course, a game would’ve been well timed with the momentum we had built up. However, the break has been good for several players who needed a few additional days recovery from knocks sustained in the busy month that opened the new season. We have been able to refresh, recharge and recondition ourselves ahead of the game, and hope that is reflected in an energetic performance this afternoon! What we have learned in the early stages so far is that we must be playing at a high level to be competitive, and our aim is to consistently deliver this whilst simultaneously improving and learning from the level and the opposition we face. Today begins another busy six-week period with some enticing fixtures to whet the appetite. I’m excited to see how we can approach these games and attack those challenges. Last week some of the players and I were attended the Community Trust Strategic Plan Launch for the next three years at Madingley Hall. The plan has been developed off the back of the impact report recently published. Both documents can be found online and give a detailed outline on the impact the Trust have across Cambridgeshire. This work has never been greater than throughout the past 18 months but offers us a springboard into what can happen soon with support. Congratulations to all those who have played a part in this work and continue with such determination to bring the strategy to life. We all know that a Football Club can be so much more than 3pm on Saturdays, and we take this responsibility seriously. I think our progress on and off the pitch has been evident in a relatively short period of time. Fundamentally, we have two core aims, firstly to impact a city, and secondly to entertain one. Hopefully today brings that entertainment for you! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Welcome to The Imps and all of their many travelling fans. Last year saw Lincoln just miss out on promotion to the Championship and despite their slow start to the season, they will most definitely provide tough opposition today. You have to go back to December 1995 for the last time the U’s beat Lincoln but all runs have to end sometime… We missed out on playing last week due to the Doncaster game being postponed because of international call ups, but winning the last two league games, plus a strong performance against Oxford in the EFL Trophy, show what this team is capable of. The Trophy game was a great opportunity to give some of our academy players first team exposure and they did well. It is one of the aims of the club to develop young talent and to see Liam Bennett, Ben Worman, Mamadau Jobe and Kai Yearn perform so well is a great indicator for the future. A special mention is due for Kai who became the youngest ever goal scorer for the U’s, and to do it on his debut was brilliant. Last week also saw the launch of the Community Trust plan for the next three years. The Trust has come a long way in the

last 10 years. If you are not aware of what the Trust has achieved, and plans for the future, do have a look at the Strategic Plan. Here are just some of the highlights: The Trust generates income in excess of £400,000 per year and uses this to run over 25 programmes in over 20 venues. There are 17.5 staff and 20+ volunteers delivering across four key areas – Community Engagement, Wellbeing, Inclusion and Education & Skills. The programmes do have real impact on many lives – old and young. It reaches those with all sorts of disabilities. When people say “we are more than just a football club” the work of the Trust shows that is very true. The other major event of the week was the formal launch of Fair Game. We are founder members of this group of clubs who are campaigning for changes to the way that football is governed with the aim of making the game more sustainable. I am pleased to say that Lincoln are also members. We are gaining a lot of support for the ideas being put forward, including from many politicians including Cambridge MP, Daniel Zeichner. Do have a look at the website. So much for activity off the pitch – we will have a large crowd today. Get behind the U’s. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Latest News On Monday, Cambridge United Community Trust Launched their ‘At The Heart of Our Community’ strategic plan for working in the community over the next few years. Being passionate about being at the heart of a stronger, healthier and more equal community, they hope that the new plan, can do precisely that. Over the past year and a half, the Community Trust has supported our community through the coronavirus pandemic by putting in place a programme of emotional, physical & practical support called Here For U’s. You can read more about the impact the Community Trust has had in ‘United For Cambridge: Our Impact Report.’ This new strategy was produced after extensive consultation with funders, partners, stakeholders and CUCT staff. It details how they will tackle the social, health and educational challenges and create tangible, measurable change in each of their four focus areas: Community Engagement, Wellbeing, Inclusion and Education & Skills. The CUCT want to continue to make a difference to local communities through the power of sport and the brand of Cambridge United Football Club for the life span of this three-year strategy. The document, which was designed by Level Up Print, also highlights the values which bind together all those at Cambridge United and the Community Trust. Sam Gomarsall, Community Trust Manager, said: “There is a real buzz amongst the team for getting started on this new game plan and delivering real change in our community. As

Cambridge and the surrounding areas navigate a route out of the pandemic, we have a real opportunity to build a healthier and more equal place with strong community cohesion at the core. We are committed to playing our part in making this happen. The past 18 months or so have not been an easy journey, however I have never been prouder of the caring & collaborative team of staff we have at the Trust. Over the next few years, I am excited to see how they can continue to transform lives across our local community.” They hope that, as people read this strategy, they are inspired by the vision they have set out. The CUCT rely on the generous support and collaboration of individuals and organisations with similar aims. They would love people to come with us on this journey whether that’s by supporting us financially (you can do so here), volunteering their time and involving their organisation in partnering with us. Please email communitytrust@ cambridge-united.co.uk if you would like to work with them further. The copy of the strategic plan can be found here. ■

Jensen Weir delivers on international duty

Under the new stewardship of Andy Edwards, U’s loanee Jensen Weir made it a memorable afternoon for England U20’s as they ran out comfortable 6-1 winners against Romania U20’s in a friendly. Substituted on in the 63rd minute, the midfielder only took twelve minutes to make his mark on the game, restoring the Young Lions’ threegoal lead in the game. Jensen could potentially feature in Andy Edwards plans next month as they take on Italy and the Czech Republic. ■

Today’s visitors LINCOLN CITY Mark Bonner’s men today welcome Michael Appleton’s Lincoln City to the Abbey, in what will be the sixth game of United’s League One campaign. The U’s will be looking to build upon last Tuesday’s impressive 4-1 win over Oxford United in the group stage of the Football League Cup at The Abbey. We now play host to Lincoln City, who currently sit 20th in the league table after five games. The Imps travel to the Abbey this afternoon, hoping that their top scorer, Anthony Scully, will add to his tally of three league goals this season. The winger has netted three of Lincoln’s four league goals this season, with the other coming from Tayo Edun, who has since joined

Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Fun fact, Tayo Edun has one of the longest names in English football - Adetayo Oluwatosin Olusegun Adio Aduramigba Iretiolowa Edun! Despite getting to the League One play-off finals last season, The Imps have not had the best start this season, with their last three games all ending in defeats, placing them just above the relegation zone. Whilst not continuing with their same form from last season, The Imps have tasted success in their opening two Papa John’s Trophy group stage games, beating Man Utd U21s and, most recently, Bradford City, leaving them top of the Group F. The Imps have become somewhat of a

bogey side in recent years, with The U’s not tasting victory against them since December 1995. Overall, United have been victorious on eight of the 36 clashes between the two sides, with Lincoln coming out on top on 13 occasions, with the rest resulting in draws. This will be the first meeting of the two sides in the third tier in 36 years, with most recent games taking place in the fourth division. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Lincoln City to the Abbey Stadium. Some United supporters may remember a previous visit when the clubs faced off in 1970 for the U’s first Football League match in front of 6,843 spectators. That encounter finished all square with Colin Meldrum heading home the equaliser. You can read the Light Blue report for the 15th August 1970 via the https://tinyurl.com/2feeex33 on the 100YearsOfCoconuts web site. 100YearsOfCoconuts follows the history of club. If you have visited their website. I would recommend you pay it a visit www.100yearsofcoconuts.co.uk as there is so much rich history surrounding Abbey United and Cambridge United. During the summer there has been a spectacular art exhibition around the city of Cambridge which has proved to be extremely popular with viewers. The exhibition, named ‘Cows’, features 44 large cow models and 46 mini figures based around locations in the city. One of the most visited Cows was positioned outside Parkside Swimming Pool and for Cambridge United supporters it has become a must-see exhibit. Today, it joins us at the Abbey Stadium, so if you missed it previously you can see the cow outside the Abbey Arms before and after today’s match – a perfect opportunity to have your photo taken with it! On the 23rd September, the large cows will take centre stage at an auction to raise money for the charity Break. The auction will take place at 7pm at the Graduate Hotel and will be hosted by celebrity auctioneer and TV personality Charles Hanson. Charles is famous for his appearances on BBC’s Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and Flog it. To register your interest here: Charity Auction - Cows about Cambridge 2021 : Cows about Cambridge 2021 You could become the proud owner of the Cambridge United cow by bidding on the night. It could become a feature in your office, front room or garden. It is I am told extremely well behaved and is also house trained. Wherever you want to keep it, the cow will be a unique

one-off item of football memorabilia. The charity Break operate throughout the East Anglia region with particular concentration in the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Break give vulnerable children and young people the time, support, and love they need to achieve their full potential. Through innovation, lifelong relationships, and keeping young people at the heart of what we do, they transform futures and change lives. If you would like to donate or make a regular payment to them, see more by following the link here. Next weekend (Saturday 18th September) the Amber Army will be visiting Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Away fans can catch the coach which will depart from The Hive Leisure Centre in Ely at 7.45am and the Abbey Stadium at 8.30am. Tickets for the coach can be made by using the QR code below, online here or at the CFU outlet on matchdays. The price of a seat in the coach is £30, for everyone. Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Afternoon all and welcome to our old friends from Sincil Bank! A fixture I must say I always hold close to my heart. Who can forget those absolute 5-0 humiliations at the Abbey in 1974 and 1977? And that’s to say nothing of our Football League baptism on 15th of August 1970 which has been well documented here many times in the last twelve months or so. For our trip down the Lane this week we’re in 1982, the old Division Two and a home fixture against the Addicks from SE7. This was our fifth season punching well above our weight in the second tier and you wonder if the novelty was really wearing off with U’s fans. It had been a win-less start to the season, with only 3,314 turning up to the home game prior against Barnsley to see us gain our first point of the campaign. Looking back to the old programme there are some fascinating features, not least a report on the Miss Cambridge United competition of 1982! Would that even be allowed these days, or would there have to be a corresponding Mr Cambridge United beauty parade too? Answers on a postcard to the club secretary! The Charlton line-up was interesting too. Paul Elliott, remember him? He went on to play for Villa and Chelsea as well as abroad in Italy before having to retire in 1994 after a bad knee injury. Steve White - the West Country goal machine, and Derek Hales? We certainly remember his strike partner, Mike Flanagan, who was with QPR in 1982 but returned the following year to add to his eight seasons with the club in the 1970s. Flanagan joined the U’s prior the start of the 1986/87 season and only made seven league appearances, however many readers here will remember his impact even though ongoing knee problems forced him to retire before Christmas. Despite picking up our first point in the previous home game, we found ourselves 2-0 down at half time and it seemed as if the mediocre start to the season was set to continue. Goals however from Floyd Streete and a brace from George Reilly meant The

U’s were in front within twelve minutes of the restart and that’s the way it remained, in front of just 3,162. I’d like to say that this heralded a good run of results – but it wasn’t to be, with United not winning again for another seven and a half weeks! The fact that we ended that season in 12th, two places higher than the previous campaign, says it all for the second half of the season. The following 1983/84 season unfortunately saw the death knell ring as far as the second tier was concerned, and we wouldn’t be back again until 1991. At this point we always look back in time outside of CUFC to reminisce in some way. All I would say today is the World Trade Centre… Enjoy the old programme and today’s game! ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen “Brave men rejoice in adversity, just as brave soldiers’ triumph in war.” Seneca We could learn a lot from Lincoln City, seeing as it took the Imps just a single season to return to the Football League following relegation to the fifth tier in 1987, the same feat that took us nine long years to accomplish. Lincoln also seem to have found a use for Jez George long after seemingly losing his credibility at the Abbey. The Imps have of course been the nearly men as well, boasting an unwanted record in the play-offs, in which they’ve lost out in their last seven play-off attempts. Many of us may have been a little surprised at The Imps’ sluggish start to the season, which of course may be due to a Covid outbreak, as well as a potential hangover from last season, when their form declined quite suddenly and steeply – seeing Lincoln lose out on promotion at Wembley in the play-off final. They’re a strong team and will no doubt find their feet once more - I just hope that their renaissance doesn’t begin against us. Lincoln has an enviable history of great managers, most notably Graham Taylor who obtained immortality as a turnip on the front page of the philosophers’ favourite newspaper, the Soaraway Sun. I knew what he meant when he said, “Do I not like that?”. Much more popular than hapless Graham was Keith Alexander, a true gentleman who cared passionately about the game and the rights and concerns of the fans who make clubs what they are. He died years before his time and was mourned by all those who love the game. These days Lincoln’s highly vocal fans are orchestrated in much the way the Ultras on the continent are, conducted by fans with megaphones. They don’t seem to watch much of the game, but they do add a lot to the atmosphere, unlike the Swindon fans who bated stewards at Stevenage. Such people don’t seem to know what sport means. Football is a game of passion of course and Lincoln’s fans belie the sleepy reputation of the

county where they live. My favourite game at Lincoln was when our passionate captain Paul Wanless led us to a creditable draw, very much against the odds. For the last ten minutes of that game our fans sang, “2-2, we’ve only got nine men.”. I forget the names of the two Cambridge players who were sent off. I have always been fond of the club since those far off days when I ran in the Eastern Counties Cross Country Championship in 1970. We changed in the home dressing room at Sincil Bank, before running up the hill of the same name. The stadium was a very different place back then, but we were very well looked after. I remember that the event stewards told us that we would only have to run up the Bank once, they lied. I have forgiven them now and must admit that the view of the cathedral as we ran along the ridge was a wonder to behold. Lincoln is a beautiful city. No doubt we are in for a tough game today. I hope that we will be listening to Coconuts when it’s all over though. COYU’s! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

The U’s made it two wins on the bounce in League One as they saw off a previously unbeaten Bolton side at the Abbey… Shilow Tracey was on the end of a George Williams cross to earn United all three points as they saw off Ian Evatt’s Bolton Wanderers, and despite the Trotters enjoying much of the play in the second half, The U’s back four stood firm to keep their second clean sheet in as many games. Hoolahan and O’Neil spurned chances late on to cement the victory but come the final whistle, the single goal was enough.

Academy Liam Bloye

It has been a pleasing week for the U’s Academy over the last week, which saw a positive performance from our U18’s, winning away at Southend United FC 5-1 - before overseeing six academy products feature within the first team matchday squad for United’s Papa John’s Trophy fixture against Oxford United on Tuesday evening. It was a proud moment seeing Mamadou Jobe and Liam Bennett make their first competitive starts for the first team, whilst Kai Yearn impressed as a second half substitute, also making his debut. I’m sure

26

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V LINCOLN CITY

Kai will make the headlines following his debut goal and rightly so, after becoming the U’s youngest ever goal scorer at 16 years and 102 days old. However, I think what was perhaps most pleasing for the Academy staff was to see the impact all the players had the game and contributing towards a convincing 4-1 victory for the U’s. Ben Worman’s three assists have perhaps gone unnoticed, but we were really pleased for all the boys. Following the game, the loans for Mamadou Jobe to St Neots Town FC and Liam Bennett to Hemel Hempstead have

been finalised as it’s now important the boys get consistent game time in competitive senior football to further their development. Our ‘Loan Strategy’ becomes increasingly important to the development of our academy players. With the first team stepping up a level, we must ensure that our boys are ready to contribute towards a winning team when called upon. Hopefully for those supporters who were at the Abbey last Tuesday evening, they will be excited to get a taste of what we have coming through our Academy, and we will continue to work extremely hard in order to provide Mark and the team with young players who are hungry to improve, work as hard as they possibly can and give the supporters what they want on a Saturday afternoon! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Community Trust Seniors Events back at the Abbey

Last Thursday we were delighted to host the first Seniors Lunch back at the Abbey. PreCovid, Cambridge United Community Trust Seniors’ Lunch was a popular social event hosted by Cambridge United Community Trust for elderly residents in the local community. In recent years, it went from strength to strength, and regularly would see 80 attendees! We were delighted to trial the lunch with 40 seniors this month and it was great to see some form of normality resume as the seniors tucked into Chicken & Mushroom Pie with a Chocolate chip cake and custard for dessert. After lunch, the seniors got stuck into some bingo where their competitive nature truly came out. A few lucky winners had a choice from the prize pool with some amazing items up for grabs (decorative napkins and novelty toilet holders). The fun didn’t stop there with puzzles and plenty of yarn being collected in there bundles. Following Covid-19, it was great to finally be able to bring back our Forever United Walking

28

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V LINCOLN CITY

Football to the community, which we know our residents really enjoy. Not only did our regular faces return to the pitch in style, but they were able to relax over tea, coffee and biscuits back at the Abbey Arms afterwards. We are very excited for our remaining activities to return and look forward to seeing more of the community attending. There will also be new introductions to the programme shortly helping to create more opportunities and signpost participants to new activities. The Forever United programme has been introduced to combat loneliness & inactivity amongst seniors within Cambridge and nearby areas through a wide offer of wellbeing and community sessions which is increasingly needed throughout the pandemic and moving forward. Want to get involved or know someone who you think might love the activities on offer? Check out the Trust’s Social Media @CUCTrust on all platforms or their website.

Women Darren Marjoram

Following a two-week hiatus in the season because of the international break, everyone involved within the women’s team would like to wish Mark and the lads the best of luck in the U’s fixture against Lincoln this afternoon. We’ve had a good couple of weeks since our last feature in the programme against Bolton Wanderers a fortnight ago, coming off the back of a 6-0 away win against newly promoted Harlow Town and then most recently a 5-2 home win over Kent Football United last Sunday. Despite the result, the Harlow victory was far from straight forward, Kira Markwell pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the score at 0-0 before Emma Jenkins broke the deadlock just before half time. However, the second 45 was a different story as we dominated proceedings and scored a further five goals to finish as eventual 6-0 winners. That resilience to stay in the game when we forced to defend is a huge asset to any team, and it’s one we know will be vital to us throughout the season. It certainly showed in the full-time result. Most recently, Kent Football United posed a different threat the following week, however a fantastic opening 15 minutes saw us go two-

SPONSORED BY

goals ahead. However, a lack of concentration for a spell allowed Kent in to score two goals to leave the game balanced at half time. What this group is brilliant at is responding to challenges and learning from mistakes, and once again showed their character in the second half to add a further three goals without reply to win the game 5-2, Emma Jenkins completed her hat-trick and Ruth Fox scored a brace. These two wins leave us sitting fourth in the table with a game in hand on the teams above. The players have worked hard through the two weeks and now face another tough task in the League Cup, against Portishead at home this Sunday at 2pm. It’s another opportunity to impress the fans who come to watch, and another chance to represent the Club and wear the badge with pride. We look forward to seeing you there! Up The U’s! ■

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE

CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman Last weekend threw up the oddity of a football-free Saturday, as far as Cambridge United are concerned. This only falls once or twice during a season but leaves us scratching our heads as to what to do on the day when, ordinarily, the game absorbs our thoughts from morning onwards! For the U’s it has been an opportunity to hit the pause button, assess the start of the season and prepare for the next block of matches, starting with today’s visit of Lincoln. The opening throes of the campaign were busy, with four consecutive weeks of Saturday/Tuesday action, but Mark Bonner’s men showed how astute they are in learning the lessons of playing at a higher level and, with two wins, two draws and just one loss, early signs indicate they can more than hold their own in League One. The recent 4-1 EFL Trophy victory over Oxford was notable for the showcasing of United’s academy talent, with debutants Liam Bennett and Mamadou Jobe belying their years. Ben Worman also provided three assists, then Kai Yearn – another making his black and amber bow – memorably climbed off the bench to complete the scoring. With that goal, Kai became the youngest competitive scorer in United’s 109-year history aged 16 years, 102 days. Mark Bonner was keen to point out to me post-match that, despite being pleased for his young charges, the focus for them now should be further appearances and continuing their development. Nevertheless, having invested many years within the academy, he will be proud in seeing what the U’s conveyer belt is now producing. The break also allowed attentions to turn to England, who produced back-to-back wins over Hungary and Andorra, whilst the trip to Poland on Wednesday, (unknown at the time of writing) hopefully ended similarly. Sadly, events in Budapest overshadowed the

result. The booing when England took the knee was frankly appalling, proving there is still a long way to go in educating those who believe it acceptable to jeer, hurl abuse, throw objects in the direction of players and, despicably, racist gesturing towards Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham. UEFA had ordered Hungary to play three games behind closed doors following discriminatory behaviour by their fans but, the fact that 67,000 were allowed into the Puskas Arena because the game fell under the jurisdiction of FIFA, underlines a lack of joined up thinking and, worryingly, a disregard for the seriousness of these issues. My final word this week is for Mark Johnson who, barring ailments and mechanicals, will cover his 1,000th U’s game for BBC Radio Cambridgeshire next week at Portsmouth. I am lucky enough to have sat alongside Mark for around half of those matches and know first-hand how dedicated a professional he is. For me he is, unarguably, one of the best local football commentators in the country. Congratulations Johnno on a remarkable achievement. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
